The spiritual meaning
of christmas
Today's world makes a great effort to impose
on us its own forms and patterns, while the
Church is in pain, is suffering, to morph Christ
in us. We were asked therefore to celebrate
Christmas a few days ago, in an atmosphere of
Eucharistic devotion, and were invited to look
deeper into the mystery of the Incarnation of
our Lord.
On the night of the Nativity of Christ, the angels appeared and spoke to the world. The
Gospel says that one heavenly angel spoke to
the shepherds and said «I bring you good tidings of great joy», and then appeared an army
of angels chanting «Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace ...». The angels chanted
God’s glory not for themselves, but for us, for
the people to join our voices with the angelic
praise. When this glory filled the heaven and
became the ladder by which the angels were
going up and down, only a few shepherds and
the Holy Virgin heard this hymn. The rest of
the people were sleeping, weighed down by
the day’s fatigue.
But what's important in this doxology of God ?
Stephen the Protomartyr, just before his martyrdom, saw the heaven opening and exhibiting God’s glory, whom he called God of glory.
This glory of God is His characteristic idiom
that was pre-eternal. As the Apostle Paul says
in his epistles, the Father is the Father of glory,
and the Son is the radiance of this glory which
He has before the ages. God, in His indescribable mercy wanted to convey this glory to His
creatures. Herein is found the blissfulness and
beatitude of life. This glory is returned to God
by all the creatures who receive it. The Cherubim, says the book of Revelation, receive this
glory with such zeal, so they have no rest day
and night, not because they are not allowed,
but because their desire for it is un-satiable and
are made whole as an eye, so the light of divine glory can totally penetrate them. As long
as man was in Paradise, as St. Paul says, he
was an icon of God’s glory. However he listened to the evil one’s suggestion and tried to
appropriate that glory, so that he was deprived
of it and died a spiritual death. The God of
glory, knowing that without it there is no complete happiness, began to fashion various ways
to send it again to the renegade, as we read to
the «Hebrews». Thus in His mercy and goodness, He found this omniscient way of humbling Himself and imparting His glory to us.
For without it there is neither bliss nor salvation. To us the Orthodox, salvation and glorification are the same. Salvation is to share in the
glory of God, the nature of God, as St. Peter
says (2 Pet. 1:4). When we become regenerated by the Spirit of God in Christ, we obtain
great value and honor as the Apostle Paul says,
we become members of Christ's glorious body.
So we see that God did for us the greatest
miracle, He gave us His Son. This is the
meaning of the feast of Christmas, that God
offered us His only begotten Son, so that he
who believes in the Son will not see death and
will live forever. Because he is the Son given
to us humans, «for there is born to you a
Savior» (Luk. 2:11). If God has done this to us
before, won’t He also grant the gift of heavenly life to all those who seek first the kingdom of Heaven?

to god in the highest!

ΤΟ ΝΟΗΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΕΟΡΤΗΣ ΤΩΝ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥΓΕΝΝΩΝ
αγαπητοί εν Χριστώ αδελφοί,
Ο σημερινός κόσμος κάνει μεγάλη προσπάθεια να επιβάλλει μέσα μας τις δικές του μορφές και τα πρότυπα,
ενώ η Εκκλησία οδίνει, πάσχει δηλαδή, να μορφώσει μέσα μας τον Χριστό. Ετσι όρισε να γιορτάσουμε πριν
από λίγες μέρες τα Χριστούγεννα μέσα σε ατμόσφαιρα ευχαριστιακή και κατανυκτική, και μας κάλεσε να
εμβαθύνουμε στο μυστήριο της Ενανθρωπήσεως του Κυρίου μας.
Την ημέρα της Γεννήσεως του Χριστού εμφανίσθηκαν οι αγγελοι και μίλησαν στον κόσμο. Λέει το Ιερό
Ευαγγέλιο ότι ενας Aγγελος παρουσιάσθηκε στους ποιμένες και τους είπε «ευαγγελίζομαι υμίν χαράν
μεγάλην», και κατόπιν εμφανίσθηκε στρατιά Aγγέλων που έψαλλαν «δόξα εν υψίστοις θεώ και επί γης
ειρήνη...». Οι Aγγελοι έψαλλαν την δόξα όχι γιά τον εαυτό τους αλλά γιά μας τους ανθρώπους, γιά να
ενώσουμε και εμείς τη φωνή μας με την αγγελική δοξολογία. Οταν αυτή η δόξα γέμισε τον ουρανό και έγινε
κλίμακα γιά να ανεβοκατεβαίνουν οι Aγγελοι, μόνο μερικοί ποιμένες και η Υπεραγία Θεοτόκος άκουγαν
αυτόν τον ύμνο. Οι υπόλοιποι άνθρωποι εκοιμούντο, βεβαρημένοι από την κούραση της ημέρας.
Αλλά τι σπουδαίο υπάρχει σ’αυτή τη δοξολογία του Θεού; Ο Πρωτομάρτυς Στέφανος λίγο πριν το μαρτύριο
του είδε ν’ανοίγει ο ουρανός και να φαίνεται η δόξα του Θεού, τον οποίο αποκάλεσε Θεόν δόξης. Αυτή η
δόξα του Θεού είναι χαρακτηριστικό ιδίωμα Του, που έχει προαιώνια. Οπως λέει ο Απ. Παύλος στην προς
Εβραίους (1:3), ο Πατήρ είναι Πατήρ δόξης, και ο Υιός είναι το απαύγασμα της δόξης του Πατρός, και έχει
την δόξα αυτή προ της καταβολής του κόσμου. Από απερίγραπτη φιλανθρωπία ο Θεός λοιπόν, ήθελε να
μεταδώσει και στα κτίσματα του αυτή τη δόξα. Σ’αυτήν βρίσκεται η ευδαιμονία και η μακαριότητα της
ζωής. Αυτήν τη δόξα όλα τα κτίσματα που την δέχονται κατόπιν την επιστρέφουν στον Θεό. Τα Χερουβείμ
τα οποία όπως λέει το βιβλίο της Αποκαλύψεως, με τέτοιο ζήλο δεν χορταίνουν από αυτή τη δόξα, ώστε δεν
έχουν ανάπαυση ημέρα και νύχτα, όχι γιατί δεν τους επιτρέπεται, αλλά γιατί η επιθυμία τους γι’αυτήν
γίνεται ακόρεστος, γίνονται ολόκληρα σαν ένας οφθαλμός για να τον διαπερνάει το φως της θείας δόξης. Ο
άνθρωπος ήταν στον Παράδεισο, όπως λέει ο Παύλος, εικών της δόξης του Θεού. Ο άνθρωπος εκεί
ανταποκρίθηκε την προτροπή του πονηρού και θέλησε να σφετερισθεί αυτή τη δόξα, με αποτέλεσμα να την
στερηθεί και να πεθάνει πνευματικό θάνατο όταν σταμάτησε να συμμετέχει σ’ αυτήν. Ο Θεός της δόξης
γνωρίζοντας ότι χωρίς αυτην δεν υπάρχει ευδαιμονία, άρχισε να κατεργάζεται ποικίλους τρόπους γιά να την
στείλει ξανά στον άνθρωπο, όπως λέει η προς Εβραίους επιστολή. Ετσι μέσα στην φιλανθρωπία και
αγαθότητα Του διάλεξε αυτόν τον πάνσοφο τρόπο να ταπεινωθεί γιά να μας μεταδωσει την δόξα Του. Διότι
χωρίς αυτήν δεν υπάρχει ούτε ευδαιμονία, ούτε σωτηρία. Σε μας τους Ορθοδόξους η σωτηρία λέγεται και
δοξασμός. Σωτηρία είναι η μετοχή στη δόξα του Θεού, στη φύση του Θεού, όπως λέει και ο Απ. Πέτρος.
Ετσι κι’εμείς όταν αναγεννόμαστε από το Πνεύμα του Θεού αποκτούμε μεγάλη αξία και τιμή, γινόμαστε
μέλη του δοξασμένου σώματος του Χριστού.
Βλέπουμε λοιπόν ότι ο Θεός έκανε γιά μας το μεγαλύτερο θαύμα, μας χάρισε τον μονογενη Του Υιό. Αυτό
είναι το νόημα της εορτής των Χριστουγέννων, ότι ο Θεός μας χάρισε τον μονογενή Του Υιό, ώστε αυτός
που πιστεύει στον Υιό να μην δει θάνατο ποτέ αλλά να ζήσει αιώνια, διότι αυτός ο Υιός έχει δοθεί σε μας
τους ανθρώπους, «ετέχθη ημίν υιός και ετέχθη σωτήρ». Αφού λοιπόν έκανε αυτό, πως δεν θα κάνει σ’αυτούς
που αναζητούν πρώτα την βασιλεία του Θεού και αυτό το δώρο, να μας χαρίσει δηλαδή όλο τον πλούτο της
ουράνιας ζωής;
δοξάσατε λοιπόν αδελφοί τον εν υψιστοισ θεον εις τον αιώνα!

My dearest parishioners,
I hope you have all enjoyed the holy
day of Christmas with your families
and friends and I wish you a very
healthy, prosperous, and successful
year for you and your families. We
have just completed a very active, productive, and historic year for our
church and community. We had many
successful events and tremendously
productive festival, but the masterpiece was the arrival and unveiling of
the Axion Estin icon. We were blessed
to bring the icon into our church to
lead, help, heal, and guide us and our
community for generations to come. It
was a great spiritual event, the vespers
service was magnificent and the whole
ceremony was highly emotional and
uplifting. The reception was well organized and all faithful, parishioners
and guests enjoyed. It was a reception
very worthy of the icon we unveiled
that evening.
I would like to express my sincere
appreciation and heartfelt thanks to
Father Konstantinos and Presbytera
Anna, the masterminds of this vision.
Thank you all who contributed financially and gave your talent and hard
work for the completion of this goal.
Special thanks to Bill Galatis and
James and Ifigenia Boulogiane, whose
initial donations secured the arrival of
the Axion Estin icon to our church. I
would like to congratulate and thank
Evelyn Galatis, the chairperson of the
100th anniversary committee and
every one of its members, for an
amazing job. Thank you to our chef,
Tashi and our cooks Phill, Paul,
Joanne, Peter, and Ted for an outstanding performance with the food
served. Thank you to the Philoptochos
ladies for making over a 1000 tasty
vegan pastries. Thank you to the altar

we have the lowest dues of the surrounding churches. Our operating expenses are constantly increasing every
year, and some of them significantly.
As we enter the New Year, our church
is facing more challenges in both the
parish development area and the capital development area. The newly created strategic planning ministry will
try to make decisions and improvements in both areas. Some of the goals
for 2014 will be to continue building
excitement for our 100 year anniversary, and undertake the following projects: Establish a soup kitchen in our
church, replace our Stone Age heating
system with a 21st century one, renovate our upper hall and kitchen and
hopefully fix the windows. All these
require good planning, plenty of financial resources, commitment, and a lot
of hard work. I am encouraging all of
you to join at least one ministry, the
one you feel is closer to your interests
and talent.
I would like to thank the outgoing parish council members, Niko Sfikas and
Nick Sfikas, for their contributions in
the last two years. I would also like to
welcome our new parish council
members, Danny Kourafalos and
Stelios Sfikas. We had no elections
since we had eight candidates for eight
open positions.
Happy New Year to all of you, I
highly appreciate the sacrifices you
make, taking valuable time from your
family and jobs to help make decisions and run the activities of our

στόχους μας για το 2014 θα
είναι να προκαλέσουμε την
αναθέρμανση του
ενθουσιασμού για τον
εορτασμό των 100 χρόνων μας,
και να αναλάβουμε τα
ακόλουθα έργα: Δημιουργία
ενός συσσίτιου απόρων στην
εκκλησία μας, αντικατάσταση
του συστήματος θέρμανσης
της Λίθινης Εποχής με ένα του
21ου αιώνα, ανακαίνιση της
άνω αίθουσας και της κουζίνα
μας και, ελπίζουμε να
φτιάξουμε τα παράθυρα. Όλα
αυτά απαιτούν καλό
σχεδιασμό, αφθονία
οικονομικών πόρων, δέσμευση
όλων και πολλή σκληρή
δουλειά. Σας ενθαρρύνω όλους
να συμμετάσχεστε σε μια
τουλάχιστον διακονία, αυτή
που αισθάνεστε ότι είναι πιο
κοντά στα ενδιαφέροντα σας
και το ταλέντο σας.
Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω τα
απερχόμενα μέλη του
ενοριακού συμβουλίου, Niko
Σφήκα και Nick Σφήκα, για τη
συμβολή τους κατά τα
τελευταία δύο χρόνια. Θα

αντιμετωπίζει περισσότερες
προκλήσεις, τόσο στη
ανάπτυξη της ενορίας οσο και
στην ανάπτυξη των κεφαλαίων
συντήρησης. Η νεοσύστατη
διακονία στρατηγικού

Χριστούγεννα. Ας χαρούμε τη γέννηση
του Κυρίου και Σωτήρος ημών Ιησού
Χριστού. Ευχόμαστε σε όλους εκείνους
των οποίων η ονομαστική εορτή ήταν στις
25 Δεκεμβρίου, Χρόνια Πολλά.
Η Επιτροπή του ΠTO θα ήθελε να
συγχαρεί τον Πατέρα Κωνσταντίνο, το
Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο και την επιτροπή
εορτασμού της 100ης επετείου για την
οργάνωση και την διεξαγωγή ενός
φαντασμαγορικού Σαββατοκύριακου για
τον Σεβασμιώτατο, όλους τους
επισκέπτας ιερείς, ψάλτες, επισήμους, και
πάνω από 700 συμμετέχοντες κατά τα
αποκαλυπτήρια και την ευλόγηση της
εικόνας του Άξιον Εστιν τον περασμένο
Νοέμβριο. Επαινούμε επίσης το όραμα,
τις προσπάθειες και τις δωρεές από τον
Ιερέα και όλους τους ενορίτες που
πρόσφεραν γενναιόδωρα για να φέρουμε
το μόνο αντίγραφο της εικόνας του Άξιον
Εστίν στις ΗΠΑ.

του Ελληνικού και του Κατηχητικού

Η GOYA εξακολουθεί να αποτελεί μία δραστήρια
ομάδα. Στον εσπερινό, κατά τα αποκαλυπτήρια της
εικόνας του Άξιον Εστίν, οι έφηβοι μας ήταν
υπεύθυνοι για την κοπή και τοποθέτηση σε
σακουλάκια 25 και πλέον καρβελιών άρτου. Οι
GOYAns μοιράστηκαν τους ρόλους και εργάστηκαν
από κοινού για να γίνει αυτό το τεράστιο έργο

As we wrap up 2013, the 100 Anniversary Committee has much to be thankful
for. The completion of our Mission Statement, our new 100th website, officers assuming their duties, a logo voted on, a
successful Plant Sale, and hosting of the
festivities for the Axion Estin Celebration
Weekend.
The 100th Anniversary Committee wishes
to thank Father Manetas, President Vangeli Kechris, the Parish Council, and all
the Committees of the Church who donated to and supported the Axion Estin
Celebrations. We truly appreciate all the
help we received, which made the event a
success. I also commend the 100th Committee for their foresight, hard work, and
professionalism as they worked through
the months to execute the appointed plans.

κάθε βήμα της υποδοχής της Εικόνας της
Παναγίας του Άξιον Εστίν . Ελπίζουμε να Evelyn Γαλάτης , πρόεδρος
έχετε εξασφαλίσει το αντίγραφό σας για
να το απολαύσετε βλέποντας και
μοιράζοντας τις νέες αναμνήσεις της ζωή
της ιστορικής Εκκλησίας μας με την
POTATO PIE WITH VEGETABLES
Πατατόπιτα με Λαχανικά
(18-20 pieces 18-20 κομμάτια)
Ingredients - Υλικά
1 Box of Phyllo Dough - 1 πακέτο φύλλο
5 or 6 medium-sized boiled potatoes - 5-6 μέτριες βρασμένες πατάτες
2 medium grated zucchinis - 2 μέτρια τριμμένα κολοκυθάκια
2-3 green finely chopped peppers - 2-3 πιπεριές ψιλοκομμένες
6-8 fresh finely chopped scallions - 6-8 φρέσκα κρεμμυδάκια ψιλοκομμένα
1 large seedless tomato finely chopped - 1 μεγάλη ντομάτα ψιλοκομμένη χωρίς τα σπόρια
1 cup finely chopped dill - 1 φλιτζάνι άνηθο ψιλοκομμένο
1 cup finely chopped fennel - 1 φλιτζάνι μάραθο ψιλοκομμένο
1/8 cup of oil - 1/8 φλιτζάνι λάδι
Salt, pepper & oregano - Αλάτι, πιπέρι και ρίγανη
Instructions – Οδηγίες
 Add oil to the pot, add the finely chopped scallions with the peppers and stir until tender. Then add
the grated zucchini and stir until lightly golden brown.
 Finely dice the boiled potatoes and add to the pot and stir until all vegetables are mixed together.
 Add the tomato, dill and fennel. Lastly, add the salt, pepper and oregano to your taste.
 Grease pan and line it with 1/2 the box of phyllo dough. Brush lightly each phyllo with olive oil and
then add evenly in pan the mixture. Top off the rest of the phyllo in the same manner as the bottom half.
 Cut it into 18-20 pieces and bake for 40 minutes at 180 degrees. ENJOY!!
 Βάζουμε στην κατσαρόλα λάδι, ρίχνουμε τα ψιλοκομμένα φρέσκα κρεμμυδάκια μαζί με τις πιπεριές
και ανακατεύουμε μέχρι να μαραθούν. Κατόπιν ρίχνουμε τα τριμμένα κολοκύθια (στον χοντρό τρίφτη)
κι ανακατεύουμε να τσιγαριστούν κι αυτά λιγάκι.
 Τρίβουμε τις πατάτες στον χοντρό τρίφτη και τις ρίχνουμε κι αυτές στην κατσαρόλα. Ανακατεύουμε
καλά να περάσει το λάδι σε όλο μας το μείγμα.
 Στη συνέχεια ρίχνουμε και την ντομάτα, τον άνηθο και τον μάραθο (αν έχουμε, δίνει ωραίο άρωμα).
Τέλος προσθέτουμε αλάτι, πιπέρι και μπόλικη ρίγανη.
 Λαδώνουμε το ταψί, απλώνουμε τα μισά φύλλα βάζοντας ανάμεσά τους λίγο λάδι, ρίχνουμε την
γέμιση και από πάνω βάζουμε τα υπόλοιπα φύλλα με τον ίδιο τρόπο.
 Χαράζουμε και ψήνουμε για 40 περίπου λεπτά στους 180 βαθμούς.

Our fall JOY/HOPE meeting at- Γεωργία Βερβέρης
tendance was unfortunately low.
Please start the new year off by
bringing your children to the get-togethers,
which occur on the last Friday of the month
unless otherwise noted. The JOY/HOPE ministry aims to build strong religious understanding
and friendships amongst our children that will
hopefully last through adulthood. Each meeting
offers a religious lesson, a learning game, an arts
and crafts project related to the lesson, and dinner and dessert. We promise an evening of fun
and friendship! Dads, Moms, Papou, Yiayia,
Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, and Godparents, please
bring your children to our ONCE a month JOY/
HOPE meetings.

Hello everyone,
We had our Christmas Luncheon and it was a successful event. I would like to thank all the people, who are to numerous to mention, who help in many way to make this a successful event. I
would, also, like to thank the generous people who gave monetary donations and donations in kind
and who presented the lovely gifts. The Philoptochos Ladies and I are very grateful to everyone
who attended our Christmas Luncheon and are happy that a good time was had by all.
Please, remember that we have our Vasilopeta on January 12, 2014 and Spaghetti Luncheon on February 23, 2014.
Everyone is welcome to come to both events.
Don’t forget that we cook for the Homeless Shelter once a month. If anyone is interested in cooking or making any

Αγαπητοί αδελφοί χαίρετε,
Παραθέσαμε το Χριστουγεννιάτικο Γεύμα μας και ήταν μια επιτυχημένη εκδήλωση. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω όλους
τους ανθρώπους, οι οποίοι είναι πάρα πολλoί για να αναφερθούν, οι οποίοι βοήθησαν με πολλούς τρόπους για να γίνει
αυτή η επιτυχημένη εκδήλωση. Θα ήθελα επίσης, να ευχαριστήσω τους γενναιόδωρους ανθρώπους που έδωσαν
χρηματικές δωρεές και δωρεές σε είδος και οι οποίοι πρόσφεραν τα όμορφα δώρα. Οι Κυρίες της Φιλόπτωχου και εγώ

has done. Our children have been to
SCATV to sing traditional carols,
both in English and Greek! That was a very memorable
experience for all.
On January 26th, we will celebrate the day of the three
Hierarchs. We will give awards to two students that will
write the best essays.

Ελπίζω όλοι να χαρήκατε τις χριστουγεννιάτικες
εκδηλώσες του σχολείου μας.
Τα παιδιά μας, τραγούδησαν επιτυχώς τα κάλαντα και στο
τηλεοπτικό κανάλι του Somerville.
Στις 26 Ιανουαρίου, θα έχουμε τη γιορτή των Τριών
Ιεραρχών, όπου θα βραβευτούν οι 2 καλύτερες εκθέσεις
μαθητών.
Στις 30 Ιανουαρίου, οι γονείς θα λάβουν τη βαθμολογία
των παιδιών (για το πρώτο μισό του σχολικού έτους).
Η πρόοδος των μαθητών, είναι καταπληκτική. ‘Ερχονται
με διάθεση να μάθουν. Απολαμβάνουν το μάθημα. Οι
δασκάλες και εγώ κάνουμε ότι μπορούμε να πλουτίσουμε
με ευχάριστο τρόπο τις γνώσεις των παιδιών.
Φυσικά, στο πλευρό μας, ΠΑΝΤΑ, ο π. Κωνσταντίνος, ο

are all that is needed. We make the coffee and

faith making him an instrument of Divine Grace.
He knows that he can compose and sing melodies, which came into the world as an echo of the
heavenly hymns sung by angels. That is why the
artist in the service of the Orthodox Church is not
permitted to treat his subjects freely but is limited
by liturgical directions. The vast treasury of Byzantine melodies was developed from a limited

In our Church today, it is time to return to our
roots, to waste no more time imitating those
around us. If we read their latest books, look at
their worship, and consider their spirituality, we
will find that they are in fact already imitating us,
to varying degrees. Those who study religion in
America find that what people desire are not ultimately more programs, more glitz and glamour,
or more artistic quality. What people desire, what
people need, is the truth of Christ’s love and salvation, the truth that the Orthodox Church has
preserved for two millenniums? Therefore it is
vitally important that we learn again the importance of transmitting the truth and essence of our
Faith to our children, to those outside our Faith
who visit, and, ultimately, to ourselves. For the
truth that is contained in the words of the Liturgy
is the Gospel of Christ, the Faith that upholds the
universe, the answer to the deepest and most desperate questions of human existence. If we do not
allow that message to be proclaimed in the
Church, if we continue to obscure it with the
beautiful music of the past, then we must not be
surprised if not only our children, but even our
adults, find themselves uninspired by their Faith.
But if, on the contrary, we embrace once again
the traditional worship of our Church and heed
the Gospel contained in the words of our worship, if we indeed internalize them and participate in them, and if, on the broader level of Faith
and practice, we devote ourselves to the truth and
reality of our Faith, to genuine prayer, faithful
almsgiving, and frequent attendance and participation in the worship of our Church, then we will
not only find ourselves rejuvenated, but will find
our children enthusiastic for the Faith and devoted to the future of the Church.

Soul Food
A new years resolution,
Maturing in Christ
To be mature in Christ means in its negative aspect to
put away childish things: self-centeredness, insistence
on having one's own way, anger, blaming others,
envy, jealousy. To be a mature Christian in its positive aspect means to become more and more like
Christ.
Merely growing up is not enough. We are to grow up
into something that is perfectly mature, and that for
us Christians, is Christ. "Be ye perfect as I am perfect," said Jesus. Lecomte du Nouy, the French physicist, once wrote, "The perfect man is not a myth: he
has lived in Christ." To be mature is to grow by the
power of the Holy Spirit more and more like unto that
perfect man: Jesus. "That you may grow up in all
things into Him who is the head, even
Christ" (Ephesians 4:15). To be mature in Christ is
part of what it means to be spiritual. It is a life-long
task that is accomplished by the Holy Spirit through
daily repentance.
The person who is mature in Christ is not the person
who goes through life expecting to receive love, like
a child, but the person who gives love. The person
who is mature in Christ is the person who understands, who forgives, who accepts responsibility for
his failures, who disciplines himself, who is humble,
realizing that without God he is nothing.
St. Paul singles out love as the most important ingredient of maturity and spirituality when he writes to
the Colossians: "Above all put on love, which binds
everything together in perfect harmony." It is when
we allow the Trinity to come and live
in us that we can
achieve this kind of
Godly maturity in
our lives.
This is what it
means to be spiritual: to keep growing in Christ.
VIGIL FOR SAINT
FILOTHEI— PATRON
SAINT OF ATHENS
On Tuesday, February 18,
2014, starting at 8:00 pm, a
Vigil for St. Filothei will be
celebrated. The Vigil will end
a little after midnight. Light
dinner to follow.
Saint Filotheï was born in
Athens to illustrious parents,
the only child of Angelos
Benizelos and his wife Syriga.
She was called Filotheï when
she became a nun, but before
then her name was Revoula.
Her mother had been barren
and had begged God to give
her a child. One night, she
saw a powerful light emerging
from the icon of the Mother of
God and entering her womb.
And that light was, indeed, the
soul of her saintly daughter,
who was born nine months
later.
Even as a young child, she
demonstrated by her behaviour and feelings what she
would later become, adorned
with every kind of virtue. Her
guide in her devotions was her
own mother, who made her a
most God-fearing person.
When she reached the age of
12, a certain local dignitary
asked for her in marriage but
the girl did not wish to marry.
On the other hand, her parents
were pressing her and her
gentle soul was such that she
couldn’t bear to make them
sad by ignoring their wishes,
and so, in the end, she agreed
to marry this wealthy person,
who was, however, anything
but rich in his soul. He was a
perverted and wicked man.
Revoula lived with him for
three years, putting up with
his sudden mood swings, until
he died and she became a
widow. Her parents wanted to
marry her off again, but she
was adamant that she wanted
to become a nun.
When her parents died, ten
years after she herself had
been widowed, she gladly
took up her ascetic struggle,
with fasting, prayers, vigils
and acts of charity. She gave
spiritual instruction to her
servants and made them vessels of the Spirit. She saw
Saint Andrew in her sleep
and, in accordance with his
will, built a monastery, the
church of which was dedicated to him. This is the
church which still stands to
this day, next to the location
of the episcopate on Saint
Filotheï Street. When the
monastery had been built,
Revoula was tonsured a nun
with the name of Filotheï. The
first nuns who lived with her
had been servants in her parents’ house. As time passed,
however, a great many other
young women flocked to the
monastery, some of them
from illustrious families, and
took the monastic habit.
They all lived their ascetic life
under the direction of their
abbess, who guided them
along their path as if she were
another Saint Synklitiki. She
had the gift of inspiring them
through her words and they
blossomed under her tutelage.
And her words and works
were confirmed, as it were, by
Christ, Who said “whoever
does them and teaches them
will be called great in the
kingdom of heaven” (Math. 5,
19)
If she heard of someone poor,
unhappy, sick, at death’s door,
she would hurry to their side
with greater goodwill than if
she were receiving help from
someone else. She built hospitals and old people’s homes
near the monastery, and took
care not only of the patients’
medical requirements and
bodily food but also of their
spiritual needs. As time
passed, the number of nuns
increased greatly, which
brought great hardships because the abbess couldn’t
meet the vast expenses, and
the nuns began to complain.
But the saint calmed them
with words of patience and
God sent His help in one way
or another, so that the difficulties were overcome.
Apart from the local girls
whom she gathered at her
monastery, she also provided
shelter for women who had
come to Athens from a variety
of places as slaves to the
Turks. She took a lot of risks
and torment for hiding them.
Four of these slaves had heard
of Saint Filotheï and, since
they were being maltreated by
their masters in an effort to
make them renounce their
faith, they slipped away and
sought refuge in the monastery. The saint took them in,
confirmed them in their faith
and waited for an opportunity
to send them back to their
proper homes. But the Turks
who had lost the slaves
learned that Filotheï had taken
them in and burst into her cell
in a raging fury. She was lying there, ill, but they dragged
her out and brought her before
the pasha. He ordered that
she be thrown into prison.
The saint wasn’t afraid, but
prepared to spill her blood for
her faith in Christ. The next
day, a large number of Turks
gathered and began shouting
that they should kill the saint.
The pasha ordered that she be
brought out of prison to ap-
pear before him. He told her
to choose: she could either
renounce her faith or lose her
head. The saint replied fearlessly, however, that she was
ready to be martyred for
Christ. The pasha would have
declared the verdict, but a
group of eminent Christians
arrived and, through their
pleading, succeeded in changing his mind and he gave orders instead for her release.
On her return to the monastery, the saint continued, as
before, to walk in the path of
Christ. And since her disciples were becoming ever more
numerous, she built another
monastery in Patisia, also in
the name of Saint Andrew.
She also built dependencies in
Tzia and on Aegina and
would send there any nuns
who had to be got out of Athens, for whatever reason. In
all their monastic houses, the
nuns worked at the loom or
did other handiwork like bees
busy in a hive. Poor or orphaned girls found protection
and work in these shelters.
On all the land she had inherited from her parents she built
monasteries and poor houses.
And she was, indeed, very
rich. One of her greatgrandfathers had married the
“daughter of the boss of Athens and was given the whole
of Kivisia and the
Akhladokampos before
Khaliantri as a dowry”. On
the land she had in Perisos,
she built another monastery
on the site they now call Kalogreza (Nun). All the poor
of the region had her as a caring mother. She tried with all
means at her disposal to bring
relief to the wretched: she fed
them, opened up wells for
them so that they had water,
healed them and found them
work. People called her “Lady
Teacher”.
On October 2, 1588, the Turks
stormed into the monastery
and wanted to once and for all

alone outside the monastery.
The nuns found her tied to a
pillar all beaten up. They
transferred her to a hiding
place in Kalogreza, where
she succumbed due to her
injuries and passed away on
February 19, 1589.
Η Αγία Φιλοθέη
γεννήθηκε το έτος 1522
μ.Χ. στην
τουρκοκρατούμενη τότε
Αθήνα. Οι ευσεβείς γονείς
της ονομάζονταν Άγγελος
και Συρίγα Μπενιζέλου. Η
μητέρα της ήταν στείρα και
απέκτησε την Αγία μετά
από θερμή και συνεχή
προσευχή.
Ο Κύριος που ικανοποιεί το
θέλημα εκείνων που Τον
σέβονται και Τον αγαπούν,
άκουσε την δέησή της. Και
πράγματι, μια ημέρα η
Συρίγα μπήκε κατά την
συνήθειά της στο ναό της
Θεοτόκου για να
προσευχηθεί και από τον
κόπο της έντονης και
επίμονης προσευχής την
πήρε για λίγο ο ύπνος. Τότε
ακριβώς είδε ένα θαυμαστό
όραμα. Ένα φως ισχυρό και
λαμπρό βγήκε από την
εικόνα της Θεομήτορος και
εισήλθε στην κοιλιά της.
Έτσι ξύπνησε αμέσως και
έκρινε ότι το όραμα αυτό
σήμαινε στην ικανοποίηση
του αιτήματός της. Έτσι κι
έγινε. Ύστερα από λίγο
καιρό η Συρίγα έμεινε
έγκυος και έφερε στον
κόσμο τη μονάκριβη
θυγατέρα της.
Μαζί με την Χριστιανική
ανατροφή, έδωσαν στην
μοναχοκόρη τους και κάθε
δυνατή, για την εποχή
εκείνη, μόρφωση. Έτσι η
Ρηγούλα (ή Ρεβούλα,
δηλαδή Παρασκευούλα),
αυτό ήταν το όνομά της

την οποία ζητούσε
οικονομική βοήθεια.
Η όλη όμως δράση της
Αγίας Φιλοθέης εξαγρίωσε
κάποτε τους Τούρκους.
Κάποια στιγμή την
συλλαμβάνουν και εκείνη
με πνευματική ανδρεία
ομολογεί: «Εγώ διψώ να
υπομείνω διάφορα είδη
βασανιστηρίων για το
όνομα του Χριστού, τον
οποίο λατρεύω και
προσκυνώ με όλη μου την
ψυχή και την καρδιά, ως
Θεό αληθινό και άνθρωπο
τέλειο και θα σας χρωστάω
μεγάλη ευγνωμοσύνη αν
μπορείτε μια ώρα
πρωτύτερα να με στείλετε
προς Αυτόν με το στεφάνι
του μαρτυρίου». Ύστερα
από την ηρωική αυτή
απάντηση προς τους
κατακτητές, όλοι πίστευαν
ότι η πανευτυχής και
φερώνυμη Φιλοθέη εντός
ολίγου θα ετελειούτο διά
του μαρτυρικού θανάτου.
Όμως, κατά θεία βούληση,
την τελευταία σχεδόν
στιγμή πρόφθασαν κάποιοι
Χριστιανοί και
καταπράυναν τον ηγεμόνα
με διάφορους τρόπους. Έτσι
πέτυχαν να ελευθερώσουν
την Αγία.

Αφεθείσα πλέον ελεύθερη, η Αγία Φιλοθέη, επέστρεψε
αναίμακτη στο μοναστήρι της, όπως επί Μεγάλου
Κωνσταντίνου ο μυροβλύτης Νικόλαος και πολλούς
αιώνες αργότερα ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Θεσσαλονίκης Άγιος
Γρηγόριος ο Παλαμάς. Φρόντιζε δε, όχι μόνο για τη
σωτηρία της δικής της ψυχής αλλά και των άλλων, αφού
τους μεν ενάρετους τους στερέωνε στην αρετή, τους δε
αμαρτωλούς τους βελτίωνε ηθικά και τους οδηγούσε στη
μετάνοια. Και αποκλειστικά για το σκοπό αυτό πέρασε
στη νήσο Τζια (Κέα), όπου προ πολλού είχε οικοδομήσει
μετόχι, για να αποστέλλει εκεί τις μοναχές εκείνες που
φοβούνταν για διαφόρους λόγους να διαμένουν στην
Αθήνα. Στην Τζια έμεινε αρκετό χρόνο και κατήχησε
θεαρέστως τις ασκούμενες αδελφές στην ακριβή τήρηση
των κανόνων της μοναστικής ζωής. Μόλις τελείωσε το
έργο της εκεί, επέστρεψε και πάλι στην Αθήνα.
Έτσι λοιπόν, η Αγία Φιλοθέη, αφού έφθασε στην
τελειότητα και στην πράξη και στην θεωρία, αξιώθηκε
από τον Θεό να επιτελεί θαύματα, από τα οποία, προς
απόδειξη του θαυματουργικού της χαρίσματος, θα
μνημονεύσουμε ένα μόνο, το ακόλουθο: Ζούσε στην
εποχή της ένας νέος, ποιμένας προβάτων, ο οποίος από
πολύ μικρός είχε συνηθίσει στις κλεψιές και στις
ραδιουργίες. Ο νέος αυτός, κατά παραχώρηση του Θεού,
κυριεύθηκε από τον Σατανά. Εξ αιτίας τούτου
περιφερόταν στα βουνά και στις σπηλιές γυμνός και
τετραχηλισμένος, θέαμα όντως ελεεινό. Πολλές φορές,
όταν συνερχόταν από την τρέλα, στην οποία τον είχε
οδηγήσει ο Σατανάς, σύχναζε στα γύρω μοναστήρια για
να βρει θεραπεία στην ασθένειά του. Δεν μπορούσε όμως
να πετύχει τίποτε. Κάποιοι, που τον ευσπλαγχνίστηκαν,
τον οδήγησαν στην Αγία Φιλοθέη η οποία, ύστερα από
πολύ και εκτενή προσευχή τον λύτρωσε από εκείνη τη
διαβολική μάστιγα. Έπειτα, αφού το νουθέτησε αρκετά,
τον εισήγαγε και στην τάξη των μοναχών. Και έτσι ο νέος
εκείνος, αφού εκάρη μοναχός, πέρασε το υπόλοιπο της
ζωής του με μετάνοια και άσκηση, θαυμαζόμενος απ'
όλους.
Μάταια οι Τούρκοι προσπαθούν να ανακόψουν την δράση
της. Ώσπου μια νύχτα, στις 2 Οκτωβρίου του έτους 1588
μ.Χ., πήγαν στο μονύδριο που είχαν οικοδομήσει στα
Πατήσια (έτυχε τότε να εορτάζεται η μνήμη του αγίου
ιερομάρτυρος Διονυσίου του Αρεοπαγίτου και η Αγία
μαζί με τις άλλες αδελφές βρίσκονταν στον ιερό ναό
επιτελώντας ολονύκτια αγρυπνία) και πέντε από αυτούς
ανέβηκαν στον εξωτερικό τοίχο και πήδησαν μέσα στην
αυλή. Στην συνέχεια εισέβαλαν στο ναό, όπου άρπαξαν
την Αγία και την μαστίγωσαν με μανία και βαναυσότητα
και την εγκαταλείπουν ημιθανή έξω από τη μονή της.
Έξω από το ναό, στα δεξιά της εισόδου του, σώζεται η
κολώνα, όπου η Φιλοθέη δέθηκε και μαστιγώθηκε. Οι
μοναχές της την μετέφεραν στην κρύπτη της στην
Καλογρέζα. Εκεί η Φιλοθέη υποκύπτει στα τραύματά της
στις 19 Φεβρουαρίου 1589 μ.Χ.
Είκοσι ημέρες μετά από την κοίμηση της Αγίας, ο τάφος
της ευωδίαζε. Ακόμη, όταν μετά από ένα έτος έγινε η
ανακομιδή, το τίμιο λείψανό της βρέθηκε σώο και
ακέραιο. Επιπλέον ήταν γεμάτο με ευωδιαστό μύρο,
τρανή και λαμπρή απόδειξη της θεάρεστης και ενάρετης
πολιτείας της, προς δόξα και αίνο του Θεού και καύχημα
της πίστεώς μας. Το ιερό λείψανό της βρίσκεται σήμερα
στον Μητροπολιτικό Ναό των Αθηνών. Στο μνήμα της
απάνω βρεθήκανε γραμμένα τούτα τα λόγια: «Φιλοθέης
υπό σήμα τόδ' αγνής κεύθει σώμα, ψυχήν δ' εν μακάρων
θήκετο Yψιμέδων».
H Φιλοθέη ανακηρύχθηκε αγία επί Oικουμενικού
Πατριάρχου Mατθαίου B΄ (1595 - 1600 μ.Χ.). Ο
Nεόφυτος ο μητροπολίτης Aθηνών, αφού εξήτασε και
ερεύνησε τα κατά τον βίον και το μαρτύριον της οσίας,
σύνταξε αναφορά στο Πατριαρχείο μαζί με τους
επισκόπους Kορίνθου και Θηβών και με τους προκρίτους
της Aθήνας για να τάξει την οσία Φιλοθέη στους χορούς
των αγίων. Σ' αυτό το συνοδικό έγγραφο είναι γραμμένα
και τούτα: «Eπειδή εδηλώθη ασφαλώς ότι το θειότατον
σώμα της οσιωτάτης Φιλοθέης ευωδίας πεπληρωμένον
εστί και μύρον διηνεκώς εκχείται, αλλά και τοις προσιούσι
τε ασθενέσι τε και θεραπείας δεομένοις την ίασιν δίδωσι...
τούτου χάριν έδοξε ημίν τε και πάση τη ιερά Συνόδω των
καθευρεθέντων ενταύθα αρχιερέων συγγραφήναι και
ταύτην εν τω χορώ των οσίων και αγίων γυναικών, ώστε
κατ' έτος τιμάσθαι και πανηγυρίζεσθαι».
