Το χωριό είναι χτισμένο σε λόφο στους πρόποδες του οποίου εκτείνεται μια μεγάλη πεδιάδα. Βόρεια και δυτικά του χωριού δεσπόζει η θάλασσα, ενώ το χωριό περιβάλλεται ταυτόχρονα και από ένα παρθένο δάσος που αποτελεί σημαντικό βιότοπο για πολλά χερσαία είδη. Στη γη του Κορμακίτη, ευδοκιμούν ολόχρονα άγρια λουλούδια που ενισχύουν τη μοναδική ομορφιά του. Ένα από αυτά είναι η Κυπριακή Τουλίπα (Tulipa Cypria). Η θαλάσσια περιοχή αποτελεί σημαντικό βιότοπο για πολλά θαλάσσια είδη, συμπεριλαμβανομένης και της απειλούμενης με εξαφάνιση μεσογειακής φώκιας. Αποτελεί επίσης μια από τις επτά πιο σημαντικές περιοχές ωοτοκίας για τις θαλάσσιες χελώνες στο βόρειο μέρος του νησιού μας. Το Kormakitis Green Festival διοργανώθηκε από την Επιτροπή Νεολαίας του Ιδρύματος Ευημερίας Μαρωνιτών Κύπρου, με χρηματοδότηση της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής και του Ιδρύματος Ευημερίας Μαρωνιτών Κύπρου και την υποστήριξη του UNDP-PFF, στα πλαίσια του προγράμματος «Cultural activities in the northern part of Cyprus». Κύριος στόχος του Φεστιβάλ ήταν η προώθηση και προστασία του φυσικού πλούτου της περιοχής και η ευαισθητοποίηση των κατοίκων των αγροτικών κοινοτήτων, αλλά και των νέων, για την ανάγκη απόκτησης περιβαλλοντικής συνείδησης. Μετά από πολλές συζητήσεις με τους κατοίκους του Κορμακίτη και λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τις ανησυχίες τους, προσπαθήσαμε να διοργανώσουμε εκδηλώσεις που θα προκαλούσαν το ενδιαφέρον της νεολαίας. Δημιουργικές εκδηλώσεις που δεν είχαν γίνει ξανά στα μαρωνίτικα χωριά και θα μπορούσαν να κινήσουν την περιέργεια των νέων, να τους ωθήσουν να εκφραστούν μέσα από την τέχνη, να αποτελέσουν πηγή έμπνευσης και καινοτομίας, να διδάξουν. Αποφασίσαμε λοιπόν να καθορίσουμε τέσσερις θεματικές ενότητες: η χλωρίδα και η πανίδα της περιοχής, τα παραδοσιακά επαγγέλματα και Dr. Gabriel Kalakoutis East Kormakitis (Kormacit) παραγωγή, η πολιτιστική κληρονομιά, η προστασία του περιβάλλοντος. Ακολούθως, μαζί με τους συμμετέχοντες, καταλήξαμε στη διοργάνωση έξι εκδηλώσεων με σκοπό τη συμμετοχή και την ικανοποίηση των αναγκών όλων των ηλικιών: των παιδιών, των νέων, των ηλικιωμένων. Κι αυτή η πινελιά ήταν που έκανε το Kormakitis Green Festival ξεχωριστό. Η μεγαλύτερη ικανοποίηση μας ήταν η συνεργασία των νέων και των παιδιών με τους κατοίκους του Κορμακίτη και η επαφή τους με τη φύση και την παράδοση, είτε μέσα από την έκθεση φωτογραφίας και ζωγραφικής, είτε μέσα από τη διοργάνωση του πρώτου φεστιβάλ ταινιών μικρού μήκους στον Κορμακίτη, μέσα από το εργαστήρι ψηφιδωτού, το θέατρο δρόμου, τις διαλέξεις. Όλες οι εκδηλώσεις αγκαλιάστηκαν με ενθουσιασμό από τους κατοίκους των κοινοτήτων που συμμετείχαν στο Φεστιβάλ (Κορμακίτης, Καρπάσια, Ασώματος και Αγία Μαρίνα), από τα σωματεία και πολιτιστικά σύνολα, τους μαθητές και τους εκπαιδευτικούς του Δημοτικού Σχολείου Άγιος Μάρωνας, μέλη της μαρωνιτικής, της ελληνοκυπριακής και της τουρκοκυπριακής κοινότητας, πρεσβείες και διεθνείς οργανισμούς που μας τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους και συνέβαλαν στην επιτυχία του Φεστιβάλ. Θέλουμε να πιστεύουμε ότι, μέσα από το Φεστιβάλ, βάλαμε το δικό μας λιθαράκι στη συλλογική προσπάθεια που γίνεται για: • Tην προβολή του Κορμακίτη και των άλλων μαρωνίτικων χωριών. • Την ευαισθητοποίηση της κοινής γνώμης για το φυσικό πλούτο της περιοχής. • Την ευαισθητοποίηση της κοινής γνώμης σχετικά με την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος και την ανάγκη ανάπτυξης περιβαλλοντικής συνείδησης. • Την προώθηση του οικοτουρισμού και αγροτουρισμού με απώτερο σκοπό τη διατήρηση της φυσικής και πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς των χωριών μας. • Την παραχώρηση δυνατοτήτων σε νέους ανθρώπους για να εξερευνήσουν περιβαλλοντικά θέματα μέσα από την τέχνη και την τεχνολογία. • Την προώθηση πολυπολιτισμικών εκδηλώσεων και την ενθάρρυνση των νέων να εργαστούν από κοινού για ένα επίκαιρο και σημαντικό θέμα όπως το περιβάλλον. • Την προβολή του πρόσφατα ανακαινισμένου από το UNDP-PFF Κοινοτικού /Πολιτιστικού Κέντρου Κορμακίτη. • Τη διατήρηση των μαρωνίτικων εθίμων και παραδόσεων. • Τη δημιουργία παρόμοιων μελλοντικών εκδηλώσεων. KOINOTIKO BHMA - τεύχος 89 Kormakitis Green Festival Art for the environment Antonia Katsioloudes Rocks of childhood By Marianna Frangeskou Maronite Welfare Foundation Youth Committee Kormakitis is the biggest of the four Maronite villages and is situated in the Northwest corner of Cyprus, by the peninsula bearing its name (Cape Kormakitis). The village is built on top of a hill, at the base of which lies a long stretch of valley. The sea sweeps in from the west and the north, and the village is surrounded by a relatively untouched forest which forms important habitat for many terrestrial species. All sorts of wild flowers grow on the land of Kormakitis all year round adding to the village’s unique beauty. One of these flowers, found only in Kormakitis and in the Akama peninsula, is the Cyprus Tulip (Tulipa cypria). The marine areas surrounding the tip of the peninsula are important habitats for many marine species, including the endangered monk seal. They are also one of the seven most important nesting areas for sea turtles in the northern part of Cyprus. The Kormakitis Green Festival aimed to promote the natural beauty of the area and engage the residents of the communities participating, especially young people, in cultural activities which discover and preserve the natural environment. The Festival was organised by the Maronite Welfare Foundation Youth Committee, funded by the European Commission and the Maronite Welfare Foundation and supported by UNDP-PFF, under the programme “Cultural activities in the northern part of Cyprus”. The Kormakitis Green Festival was composed by 6 activities that had the power to challenge, to inspire, to teach and to entertain. For every activity, four thematic areas were specified and the participants were asked to work within these thematic areas. After taking into consideration young peoples’ needs and suggestions and after several meetings of brainstorming, we decided to specify the following thematic areas: flora and fauna of the region, traditional production, protection of the environment and cultural heritage. Our wish was to or- ganize creative and innovative activities that combine nature and tradition, modernity and art. What made the Green Festival unique was the participation of people of all ages to all our activities. It was of outmost importance for our Committee to organise useful activities that would satisfy the needs not only of young people but also of the residents of the rural communities participating. For this reason we organised different activities such as lectures, photo and painting exhibitions, a mosaic workshop, a green film festival and a theatre play. All activities were embraced by the residents of the rural communities participating (Kormakitis, Karpasha, Ayia Marina, Asomatos), the local NGOs, the teachers and pupils of the St. Maron primary school, members of the Maronite, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot community, embassies and international NGOs that honoured us with their presence and did their part to ensure the success of the Festival. We believe that the Kormakitis Green Festival: • Contributed to the promotion of the image of Kormakitis village and the surrounding villages. • Raised public awareness about the area’s rich natural beauty. • Raised public awareness about the environmental protection and the importance of developing a green culture. • Gave the opportunity to young people to explore environmental issues through media and art. • Contributed towards the promotion of ecotourism and agrotourism which the Community Council of Kormakitis wants to promote. • Contributed to the promotion of the renovated cultural centre in Kormakitis. • Promoted mutual understanding and encouraged young people to work together on the environmental problem. Της Γιάννας Σκούλλου Επιτροπή Νεολαίας του Ιδρύματος Ευημερίας Μαρωνιτών Κύπρου Συντονιστές της εκδήλωσης: Mιχάλης Γ. Xατζηρούσος και Eιρήνη Kατσιολούδη Η τελετή έναρξης του Kormakitis Green Festival πραγματοποιήθηκε το Σάββατο 8 Ιουνίου στον Κορμακίτη με παρουσιάσεις από διακεκριμένους καθηγητές και επιστήμονες σχετικά με το φυσικό πλούτο της περιοχής Κορμακίτη και τις ευκαιρίες ανάπτυξης του. Παρόντες στην έναρξη του φεστιβάλ ήταν ο Εκπρόσωπος των Μαρωνιτών κ. Αντώνης Χ΄Ρούσος, πρόεδροι σωματείων και οργανωμένων συνόλων, κάτοικοι του Κορμακίτη και των γειτονικών χωριών. Η εκδήλωση ξεκίνησε με μια συνοπτική παρουσίαση των στόχων και των εκδηλώσεων που προγραμματίζονταν στα πλαίσια του Kormakitis Green Festival με σκοπό την ενημέρωση των παρευρισκομένων και τη συμμετοχή του στη διοργάνωση του Φεστιβάλ. Η παρουσίαση έγινε από την κα. Ειρήνη Κατσιολούδη, μέλος της Επιτροπής Νεολαίας του Ιδρύματος Ευημερίας Μαρωνιτών Κύπρου. Ακολούθησε η εξαιρετική παρουσίαση της Dr. Ozge Ozden Fullen, επίκουρης καθηγήτρια στο Near East University για τη σημασία της χλωρίδας και πανίδας που αναπτύσσεται στην περιοχή του Κορμακίτη. Η Dr. Fullen παρουσίασε τα είδη βλάστησης της περιοχής που προστατεύονται από την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση λόγω της μοναδικότητας τους και τόνισε την ανάγκη ευαι1 σθητοποίησης των κατοίκων για την προστασία του φυσικού πλούτου της περιοχής. Σημαντική ήταν επίσης η παρουσίαση φωτογραφιών της φώκιας μοναχους μοναχους, η οποία θεάθηκε στην περιοχή λίγες μέρες πριν από την παρουσίαση, μετά από αρκετά χρόνια που δεν είχε θεαθεί στην Κύπρο. Ακολούθησε η άκρως ενδιαφέρουσα παρουσίαση του Dr. Carlos Jimenez, ερευνητή και συνεργάτη στο Κυπριακό Ινστιτούτο Ερευνών, o οποίος ανέλυσε τα διάφορα είδη φυτών που μπορεί να ανακαλύψει κανείς στους θαλάσσιους βιότοπους του Κορμακίτη. Ο Dr. Jimenez, ο οποίος είναι επαγγελματίας δύτης, παρουσίασε φωτογραφικό υλικό με μοναδικές φωτογραφίες από τα άδυτα της θάλασσας του Κορμακίτη ενώ έδειξε επίσης δορυφορικές φωτογραφίες οι οποίες τονίζουν τη σημασία της περιοχής στην ανάπτυξη σπανίων ειδών βλάστησης. Η εκδήλωση έκλεισε με την παρουσίαση της κας. Άρτεμης Γιορδαμλή, υπεύθυνη του Laona Project, ενός Ιδρύματος για την προώθηση του κυπριακού οικοτουρισμού και τη διατήρηση της παραδοσιακής αρχιτεκτονικής και των παραδοσιακών επαγγελμάτων. Η κα. Γιορδαμλή παρουσίασε την ανάπτυξη που παρατηρήθηκε στην περιοχή Ακάμα στην επαρχία Πάφου, μέσα από μια συντονισμένη προσπάθεια με απώτερο σκοπό τη διατήρηση του φυσικού και πολιτιστικού πλούτου της περιοχής. KOINOTIKO BHMA - τεύχος 89 Οpening Ceremony: 8th June 2013 Raising awareness of local people for the protection of the natural resources and promoting the eco and agro tourism in the region. Hadjiroussos and Irene Katsioloudes The opening ceremony of Kormakitis Green Festival took place on Saturday, 8th of June at Kormakitis and it involved presentations by distinguished professors on the richness of natural resources of Kormakitis and the opportunities for development. Present at the opening of the festival was the Representative of the Maronite Community Mr. Antonis Haji Roussos, presidents of associations and organized groups, residents of Kormakitis and the surrounding villages. The event started with a brief presentation of the objectives and the planned activities within Kormakitis Green Festival. The intention of the presentation was to inform the attendees about the activities and request their participation. The presentation was made by Mrs. Irene Katsioloudes, member of the Maronite Welfare Foundation Youth Committee. The above mentioned presentation was followed by the excellent presentation of Dr. Ozge Ozden Fullen, Assistant Professor at the Near East University, about the importance of the flora and fauna that grows in Kormakitis. Dr. Fullen presented the endangered plant species of the area (such as Ophrys kotschyi, Kıbrıs Ofrisi, Tulipa cypria, Medos Lalesi) that are protected by the European Union because of their uniqueness. She furthermore emphasized the need and the importance of raising awareness among the residents in order to protect the natural wealth of the region. Significant was also the slideshow of the Mediterranean Monk Seal also known as Monachus Monachus which was seen in the area a few days before the presentation, several years after its last appearance in Cyprus. Dr. Fullen’s presentation was followed by the very interesting presentation of Dr. Carlos Jimenez, researcher and associate at the Cyprus Research Institute. The presentation analyzed different types of plants that can be found in the marine habitats of Kormakitis. Dr. Jimenez, who is a professional diver, presented photographic material with unique captions from the depths of the sea of Kormakitis. He also presented satellite photos which highlight the significance of the development of rare species of vegetation in the region. The event concluded with the presentation of Mrs. Artemis Yiordamli, head of the Laona Project, a foundation that promotes Cyprus ecotourism and the preservation of traditional architecture and traditional professions. Through her presentation, Mrs. Yiordamli presented the growth observed in the villages of Paphos located in the area of Akamas. This was achieved through a coordinated effort in order to preserve the natural and cultural wealth of the region. Της Έλενας Χάννα Επιτροπή Νεολαίας του Ιδρύματος Ευημερίας Μαρωνιτών Κύπρου Συντονιστές της εκδήλωσης: Γιάννης Λιασίδης και Έλενα Xάννα Το γνωστό γνωμικό «Μια εικόνα αξίζει χίλιες λέξεις» αντικατοπτρίζει στο έπακρο την αίσθηση που άφησε η έκθεση φωτογραφίας που πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 7 Ιουλίου 2013 στο πρόσφατα αναπαλαιωμένο από το UNDP – PFF Κοινοτικό/Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο Κορμακίτη. Δεκαεννέα άτομα με πάθος για τη φωτογραφία, μεταξύ των οποίων νέοι από τη Μαρωνίτικη, Ελληνοκυπριακή και Τουρκοκυπριακή κοινότητα, παρουσίασαν όμορφες εικόνες που αποθανάτισε ο φωτογραφικός τους φακός αποκαλύπτοντας την ευαισθησία της ψυχής τους μέσα από αθέατες πλευρές της φύ- σης και της παράδοσης του Κορμακίτη. Η έκθεση αγκαλιάστηκε με ενθουσιασμό από τους κατοίκους του χωριού αλλά και της γύρω περιοχής. Τιμητική ήταν και η παρουσία της κας. Alessandra Viezzer από την Ευρωπαική Επιτροπή, των πρεσβευτών της Φιλλανδίας, Σουηδίας, Ιταλίας, Γερμανίας, Σλοβακίας, Λιβάνου, Αγγλίας, Ισπανίας και Δανίας, αντιπροσωπείας του κινήματος Οικολόγων Περιβαλλοντιστών και του Εκπροσώπου των Μαρωνιτών στη Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων κ. Αντώνη Χ΄ Ρούσου. Coordination: Yiannis Liasides and Elena Hanna The exhibition was embraced with enthusiasm by the inhabitants of Kormakitis and the surrounding villages. The event was honored by the presence of Mrs. Alessandra Viezzer from the European Commission, the ambassadors of Finland, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Slovakia, Lebanon, England, Spain and Denmark, a delegation of the Cyprus Green Party and the Maronite Representative in the Cyprus Parliament, Mr. Antonis Haji Roussos. The famous saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” reflects the feelings awakened by the photo exhibition which was held on the 7th of July 2013 at the Kormakitis Community / Cultural Center. The center was recently restored by UNDP – PFF. Έτσι και η έκθεση ζωγραφικής που πραγματοποιήθηκε την Κυριακή 11 Αυγούστου 2013 στο Κοινοτικό/Πολιτιστικό κέντρο Κορμακίτη, που ταξίδεψε τους παρευρισκομένους στα άδυτα της ψυχής των δέκα ζωγράφων, από τα μαρωνίτικα χωριά και όχι μόνο, που με ένα φανταστικό συνδυασμό χρωμάτων κατάφεραν να μας συγκινήσουν. Θέματα από την καθημερινή ζωή, την παράδοση, τη φύση και τη θρησκεία ζωντάνεψαν με περισσή εκφραστική δύναμη πάνω στον καμβά, την πορσελάνη, το χαρτί. Κατά τη διάρκεια της έκθεσης οι παρευρισκόμενοι είχαν την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθήσουν την καλλιτέχνη Martina Santorova, από τη Σλοβακία, να ζωγραφίζει ένα πίνακα με χελώνες, ταξιδεύοντας έτσι στην πανέμορφη παραλία του Κορμακίτη, το Λυθράτη. Εργαστήρι Ψηφιδωτού Της Ιωσηφίνας Σκορδή Επιτροπή Νεολαίας Ιδρύματος Ευημερίας Μαρωνιτών Με στόχο την άμεση δημιουργική επαφή των κατοίκων του Κορμακίτη με κάποιους από τους τομείς του περιβάλλοντος διοργανώθηκε στις 11 Αυγούστου 2013 εργαστήρι ψηφιδωτού στο Κοινοτικό Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο του Κορμακίτη. Το θέμα το οποίο επιλέγηκε για το ψηφιδωτό ήταν η κόκκινη τουλίπα του Κορμακίτη, ένα από τα προστατευόμενα είδη της περιοχής που είναι άρρηκτα συνδεδεμένο με το χωριό και τη γύρω περιοχή. Με την επιλογή αυτού του συγκεκριμένου θέματος οι συμμετέχοντες ευαισθητοποιήθηκαν ακόμα περισσότερο ως προς την προστασία και τη διαφύλαξη του φυτού αυτού και γενικότερα της βλάστησης της περιοχής. Στο εργαστήρι συμμετείχαν είκοσι άτομα. Με την καθοδήγηση της κας. Ιωάννας Κατσιολούδη και της κας. Φούλας Φραγκίσκου, που συμμετείχαν εθελοντικά στην εκδήλωση, ετοιμάστηκαν μικροί πίνακες που κοσμούν τα σπίτια των κατοίκων του Κορμακίτη! The Painting Exhibition held on Sunday 11th August 2013 at the Kormakitis Community/Cultural Centre was a journey to the Maronite villages, history and tradition through colorful paintings prepared by ten painters. Themes from everyday life, tradition and nature came to life with great expressive power on canvas, porcelain and paper. During the exhibition the attendees had the opportunity to watch the artist Martina Santorova from Slovakia create a painting with turtles, taking us through a journey to the beautiful beach of Lythratis in Kormakitis. Mosaic Workshop By Josephina Skordi Maronite Welfare Foundation Youth Committee The mosaic workshop was held on 11th August 2012 at the Kormakitis Community/Cultural Centre and aimed at raising environmental awareness through artistic creations. The topic chosen was the red tulip of Kormakitis, one of the various endangered species of the region, which is inextricably linked with the village and the surrounding area. By choosing this particular topic, the participants became even more aware of the need for the protection and preservation of this plant and the vegetation of the area in general. Twenty people attended the workshop and with the guidance of Mrs. Joanna Katsioloudes and Mrs. Foula Frangiskou, who voluntarily participated in the event, they prepared decorative plaques that today adorn the homes of the residents of Kormakitis! 5 Iosif Skordis: “Όταν αγαπάς τη φύση, αγαπάς ότι υπάρχει μέσα στη φύση» “When you love nature, you love whatever is part of it” 4 6 9 10 KOINOTIKO BHMA - τεύχος 89 Τελετή Λήξης: 10 Νοεμβρίου 2013 Γιατί είμαστε νέοι που ενδιαφερόμαστε, επιδιώκουμε την επιβίωση, αγαπούμε τη γη μας και κάνουμε όνειρα για το μέλλον. Στην τελετή λήξης του φεστιβάλ έδωσαν το παρόν τους ο Μακαριότατος Αρχιεπίσκοπος Μαρωνιτών Ιωσήφ Σουέιφ, η κα. Αλεσσάντρα Βιέτζερ από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή, η κα. Τιτσιάνα Τζεννάρο εκ μέρους του UNDP – PFF, η κα Kristen Pisani από την Αμερικάνικη Πρεσβεία, ο κ. Μάριος Μαυρίδης βουλευτής του ΔΗ.ΣΥ., ο Εκπρόσωπος των Μαρωνιτών στη Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων κ. Αντώνης Χ’ Ρούσος και η κα. Μαρτίνα Τζακκάρο από το UNDPPFF. Η εκδήλωση ξεκίνησε με την προβολή ενός βίντεο – οδοιπορικό στο Green Festival ενώ κατά τη διάρκεια της τελετής δόθηκαν πιστοποιητικά συμμετοχής και δώρα σε όλους τους συμμετέχοντες. Το δικό της στίγμα έδωσε η κλινική διαιτολόγος/ διατροφολόγος κα. Άννα Παχίτα, η οποία παρουσίασε τα οφέλη της Μεσο- γειακής Διατροφής και τις ευεργετικές ιδιότητες των προϊόντων που παράγει ο τόπος μας και ειδικότερα των προϊόντων που παράγει η γη του Κορμακίτη. Πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο στην τελετή όμως είχαν τα παιδιά του Δημοτικού σχολείου Άγιος Μάρωνας. Όταν ζητήσαμε από τα παιδιά να λάβουν μέρος στην εκδήλωση αυτή, δεν περιμέναμε ότι θα αγκάλιαζαν την πρωτοβουλία μας με τόσο μεγάλο ενθουσιασμό. Μέσα από το πρόγραμμα τους μας ταξίδεψαν στη φύση και την παράδοση του Κορμακίτη και μάλιστα με τον πιο επιτυχή και καινοτόμο τρόπο. Αρχικά παρουσίασαν δυο τραγούδια, σε μουσική Δημήτρη Κωνσταντίνου και στίχους Κουμέττου Κατσιολούδη, τα οποία είχαν γραφτεί ειδικά για την τελετή λήξης του Φεστιβάλ. Η παρουσία των παιδιών όμως δεν περιορίστηκε μόνο στην μουσική. Σε συνεργασία με τους δασκάλους, τους γονείς και τους παππούδες τους εργάστηκαν και ετοίμασαν το θέατρο δρόμου με το οποίο σηματοδοτήθηκε και η λήξη της τελετής. Η διαδρομή του θεάτρου ξεκινούσε από την κεντρική πλατεία του χωριού και κατέληγε στο Κοινοτικό/ Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο Κορμακίτη, όπου παρέμενε ανοικτή και η έκθεση φωτογραφίας με φωτογραφίες οι οποίες είχαν παρουσιαστεί για πρώτη φορά σε έκθεση τον Ιούλιο. Κατά τη διαδρομή τα παιδιά 3 5 6 αναβίωσαν τα Μαρωνίτικα ήθη και έθιμα με τον καλύτερο τρόπο. By Marios Hadjirousos Maronite Welfare Foundation Youth Committee Coordination: Irene Katsioloudes The momentum gained by the Green Festival during the past few months was evident at the closing ceremony that took place on Sunday 10th November at St George Traditional Coffee Shop next to St George Cathedral in Kormakitis. Present at the festival were H.E. the Maronite Archbishop of Cyprus Youssef Soueif, Mrs Alessandra Viezzer from the European Commission, Mrs Tiziana Zennaro on behalf of the UNDP-PFF, Mrs Kristen Pisani from the American Embassy, Mr Marios Mavrides, Democratic Rally of Cyprus MP, the Maronite Representative in the House of Parliament Mr Antonis Haji Rousos, Ms. Martina Zaccaro from UNDP-PFF and many people. The ceremony started with a short video travelogue of all the events of the Green Festival and during the ceremony participation certificates and gifts were offered to all the participants. The clinical dietician/nutritionist Mrs Anna Pachita left her own mark on the festival with her presentation about the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet and the bene- ficial properties and nutritional value of our local products and especially those produced by the land of Kormakitis. The protagonists of the ceremony though were the children of St Maron Elementary School. When we asked the pupils of our Elementary School to participate in our event, we didn’t expect that they would embrace this initiative with such enthusiasm! Through their programme we travelled to the nature and tradition of Kormakitis in the most successful and innovative way. At first, the pupils presented two songs, whose music and lyrics were composed by Dimitres Konstantinou and Koumettos Katsioloudes respectively, and which were specially written for the closing ceremony of the festival. The presence of the children though was not solely restricted to music. In collaboration with their teachers, parents and grandparents they worked and prepared a street theatre which marked the end of the ceremony. The route of the theatre started from the central square of the village and ended at the Kormakiti Community / Cultural Centre, where the attendees had the opportunity to enjoy the photo exhibition which hosted photos that were presented for the first time in July. On their way to the Community/ Cultural Centre the children revived the Maronite traditions and customs in the best way. Hadjiroussos Το πρώτο Green Film Festival έλαβε χώρα με μεγάλη επιτυχία το βράδυ της 10ης Αυγούστου 2013 στην πλατεία του Αγίου Γεωργίου στον Κορμακίτη, η οποία αναβαθμίστηκε πρόσφατα με συχρηματοδότηση της Ευρωπαικής Ενωσης, της κυπριακής κυβέρνησης και του Ιδρύματος Ευημερίας Μαρωνιτών. Την Επιτροπή μας τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους ο κ. Christopher Ingelbrecht από την Ευρωπαική Επιτροπή, ο βουλευτής του κινήματος Οικολόγων-Περιβαλλοντιστών κ. Present at the Festival was Mr Christopher Ingelbrecht on behalf of the European Commission, the MP of the Green Party Mr George Perdikis with other representatives from his party, the Maronite Representative in the Cyprus Parliament Mr Antonis Haji Roussos, residents and friends of Kormakitis.
