Professional Women’s Association
PWA is the only group of its kind which
provides women in Rome with their very
own forum for exchanging more than ideas
- shaping their businesses, sharing contacts
while forging friendships and offering
ways to support each other’s careers and
ambitions - in short, improving themselves,
their work and their life experience.

Celebrating two decades of PWA in Rome
Dear Members and Friends,
Welcome to PWA’s Summer Party at Circolo Canotttieri
Lazio. It is with great pride that we close the season in this
prestigious Roman Club with many guests who we thank
for their participation in making this past year another
successful one for the Professional Women’s Association
of Rome.
Among them, you will recognize some of our speakers,
sponsors and partners to whom we are grateful for their
support and trust. We believe in long term professional
win/win relationships and are happy to be part of a larger network that involves local, national and international
companies, associations, organizations and universities.
These include John Cabot University, the Women International Network Conference (WIN), DIGA Golf, Rotary,
Manageritalia Roma, Rome Alumni Bocconi, and Fondazione Marisa Bellisario. In addition, PWA supports Telefono Rosa and Komen Race for the Cure.
In autumn 2014, together with the Rome Business School,
we plan to hold a seminar on Leadership and Work Life
Balance. Stay tuned for more information.
Tonight, you are meeting the new board; it consists of 8
professional women willing to volunteer time and work to
make PWA the most successful international and professional networking organization in Rome. In the board, a
mix of Belgian, Italian, Australian, Irish, Brazilian and Russian bloods will be leading your Association to new exciting events.
The Board will be supported by five assistants who work
behind the scenes and manage, among other things, all
channels of communication: the monthly cc mails you
receive in your mailbox (Valerie Baxter), the news that
are posted on our website (Marny Mancini), the monthly
newsletter (Hanna Suni) and the press releases (Alessandra Sorge). In addition, Caterina Flick has offered to be
PWA’s new Legal Advisor, replacing Antonella Tanico
who has given her support to PWA since its creation in
2007. A warm thank you to both for your time, commitment and professional advice.
Our Summer Party is also a time for celebration. Tonight
many PWA women will be recognized and nominated for
special talents, qualities and achievements; congratulations to all of you. By Vox Populi, one woman has been
elected Woman of the Year 2013/14. I wish to thank her
for her commitment and dedication to PWA and invite
her to enjoy the evidence that who she is, what she does
and how she does it, is widely appreciated among our
community.
My heartiest thanks go to all board members and assistants who worked hard and efficiently throughout the
year, in the spotlight or behind the scenes, to make the
PWA events real successes. I particularly appreciated the
team spirit and cohesion that prevailed during the working sessions and event preparation.
I invite you to come to the next ConneXion to be held
on July 2nd, in a location to be informed soon; you can
count on our Social Directors to surprise us one last time
before September! It will be our last appointment to network before the summer break and an opportunity to
share your ideas and feedback on the past year. We will
also be happy to collect early bird subscriptions.
I will be there and look forward to seeing you in July or
September for a new PWA season. I wish you all a great
summer,
Warmly yours,
Carol Bourg, President

Woman of the year
W
MOMENTS OF GLORY
hen during South African J&J executive Linda Botha’s presidency
I first developed the project for
PWA Woman of the Year, my aim
was to infuse the group spirit in
PWA, the will to network, strengthen the bond
between individual fellow members and raise
the expectations of professional women in Rome
who approached our Association of finding a
place of which to be an integral part. My slogan
as social director during those years was in fact
“Be a part of it!”.. It still is…
Finding a common denominator to achieve
my goal among a multicultural assortment of
women wasn’t easy and the whole year was
spent encouraging women of different nationalities, cultures, ages and professions to participate in the majority of our activities with all
sorts of initiatives, stretching the involvement of
the board to unprecedented limits. It was then
that my Tuscia - based previous private initiatives
IWD-International Women’s Day cultural events
and Footloose trekking excursions also became
integral parts of the PWA programme, in order to
broaden our horizons and involve other associations in Rome. These were our first attempts at
cross-association networking and wider visibility!
Among the eight finalists of that first edition in
2009/10 were Antonia Bellucci (membership director), Sara dell’Ariccia (Italian), Swee Heang
Khoo (Malaysian), Julie Simonsen of EYP-English
Yellow Pages and Lisa Tucci (Americans), our
Newsletter editor. Sile O’Broin (Irish) gained her
first nominations for Loyalty and Marketing &
Communication skills. Paula Treu (Canadian),
an untiring networker, also developing the “Welcome Neighbour” group for newly arrived expat
women in Rome received nominations for Credit
rating, Social/Culture chic, Ambition & Special
Achievement.
On par, with three nominations as Competitive/Willing to learn, for Commercial skills and
Effective Communication was Belgian Carol
Bourg, our very first Winter Queen reaching the
halfway mark to the award. At that time PR/
sponsorship director, I remember how as a very
valuable ally when BM she sincerely believed in
our mission, continually striving to obtain as much
value as she possibly could for PWA, only to become Woman of the Year
4
By Valerie Baxter, Special projects
in 2009/10. Her diligence was further rewarded
with her subsequent election to President of
PWA, one of the best we’ve ever had. PWA’s first
Woman of the Year was indeed on her way to
greater challenges!
Woman of the Year
2010-11
Françoise Chotard
Woman of the Year 2009-2010
Carol Bourg
Finalists in 2010/11 were Rosemary Aspinall
(British), our longest standing member, witness
to all the incredible changes in PWA over its
20 year history, Carol Boren Silenzi (American)
Board secretary, Swee Heang Khoo and Margrit
Mau (German), both assiduous Footloose participants since the word go. Lisa Tucci, finalist for
the second time received her first nomination for
Ambition & Special Achievement plus another
for Effective Communication skills. Sile O’Broin
repeated her Loyalty nomination plus Marketing
& Communication skills, this time receiving an
additional nomination for Commercial skills.
Expat new entry to both Rome and PWA, was
Françoise Chotard (French), an ex Luxembourg
private bank employee who, with her fetching
smile and faint French accent received nominations for Credit rating, Social/Culture chic, Competitive & willing to learn. Taking everything in
her adopted Norwegian stride with a mais oui,
biensure, she persevered networking in several
languages right through the season in PWA to
become not only Winter Queen, but was also
acclaimed Woman of the Year 2010/11.
Our third year of the award 2011/12 brings
back as finalists Françoise Chotard, coincidental duo Swee Heang Khoo and Margrit Mau plus
a new entry, Maria Grazia Caiafa, (from Puglia, as she prefers to say). Another new entry,
Marta Schneider (Brazil) gains her first nomination for Credit rating. This time having been with
PWA through thick and thin, Rosemary Aspinall
receives 2 nominations for Ambition & Special
achievement and Social/Culture chic, along
with Laura Rizzi (Milanese - another punctualisation): Ambition & Special achievement and
Loyalty. Sile O’Broin does it again for third time
in a row, again with 3 nominations: Marketing
& Communication skills, Loyalty and Commercial skills. PWA Membership director, Françoise
Chotard maintains supremacy as Winter Queen
2011/12.
Guess who then is Woman of the Year?
There was this outspoken, hyperactive American woman in media communications, controversial blogger and author of an unusual book
filled with satire about expat living in Rome, who
that year had decided to rock PWA through her
inspiring networking efforts to raise the quality
of interaction during our meetings. (She’d also
received an ovation as speaker in “Da Venere
a Minerva” seminars). So, with this exceedingly
successful comeback she was voted with a
landslide majority: a moment of glory for ……
Lisa Tucci – Woman of the Year 2011/12!
Woman of the Year
2011-12
Lisa Tucci
The competition 2012/13 sees me no longer
as both Social and Special projects director. Inspired by Lisa Tucci, I wanted to dedicate myself solely to PWA’s Special projects following
“Da Venere a Minerva” seminars in November
2011 (empowerment of Italian women in public
administration) at Comune di Roma where, together with Sen. Monica Cirinnà, then MP and
president of the Commissione delle Elette, I had
the desire to elevate women’s perception of
life balance/harmony in the workplace. Monica
Cirinnà has been now affectionately acclaimed
as “madrina” of PWA, helping us to gain public
recognition in Rome as the association to which
to belong, able to make a difference in professional women’s lives. We could now export our
modus operandi to involve the best associations
in Rome in our initiatives. The way is paved for
future partnerships and joint ventures with associations like Manager Italia, Bocconi Alumni Association and Rotary International, academic
institutions like John Cabot University.
Finalists 2012/13 total 11 women welcoming
new entries Sandra De Sabata Sosa (El Salvador), Michela Lazzé, Franca Menonna, and Teresa Valerio. PR/Sponsorship director and CEO
of her own company The African Queen Travels,
Marta Schneider achieves another appropriate
title as Winter Queen 2012/13, plus 3 nominations
for Credit Rating, Social/Culture Chic and Effective Communication. Other nominations were
5
distributed yet again to Rosemary Aspinall for
Loyalty, to Michelle Bassanesi and Sile O’Broin
for Ambition & Special Achievement, Maria
Grazia Caiafa for being Competitive & Willing
to Learn, to new entry Gerlie Saura (Philippines)
for Marketing & Communication skills, plus Laura
Rizzi for Commercial skills.
However, no-one could contend with the
intrepid determination of the Woman in Black
(and white). Colourful Marta Schneider, comfortable in any colour is openly perceived by a
majority as: Woman of the Year 2012/13!
Woman of the Year
2012-13
Marta Schneider
The Award 2013/14 registers an increase in
candidates as more women pass the eligibility
gate to the finals – a record 15: Rosemary Aspinall, Swee Heang Khoo, Michelle Bassanesi
(Australian), Teresa Valerio, Franca Menonna,
new entries Tazim Hammond (Indian), Hanna
Suni (Finnish), Anna Kroymann (German) Maria
Francesca Belcaro, and Monica Livan (Italian).
Two more Italian ladies receive their first nominations: Patrizia Falcone for Ambition & Special
Achievement, and Michela Lazzé who takes
home two nominations: Credit rating & Effective
communication. Maria Grazia Caiafa receives
a well deserved nomination as Social/Culture
Chic. Marta Schneider keeps up the good work
and receives 2 more nominations for Marketing
& Communication and Commercial skills.
Sile O’Broin, country sales representative for a
Spanish company and lecturer for Rome Business
School, also a previous winner of JCU scholarship
and PWA-WIN Scholarship, who is now collecting
nominations like stamps receives yet again PWA
recognition for Loyalty, Competitive & willing to
learn, Ambition & Special Achievement, and on
this occasion our Woman in Red, Sile O’Broin is
crowned Winter Queen 2013/14. Her consistency and relentless pursuit of new challenges gains
her recent election to Programming director for
next season, a fulcrum board position thus confirming her as an ideal team member to continue the search for excellence in PWA.
It’s clear in PWA by now that in order to become Woman of the Year, nobody judges a
book by its colour (cover). Already in its fifth year,
it’s about the asserted big 5 (OCEAN) personality ingredients needed to make a person stand
out and is recognized to be full of potential:
someone who is Open to experience, Conscientious, Extrovert, Agreeable, plus a small dose of
Neuroticism, that little extra trait needed to be
ready to push oneself further. In 2013/14 a coveted award, it’s about the People We Are. It’s
about what we do, our passions and what we
can achieve to create value, for ourselves and
for PWA.
During our night of the Oscars, for the very
first time an Italian woman makes it to the top!
This year’s moment of glory is affectionately
portrayed as the image Wonderwoman: let’s
once more celebrate Woman of the Year, this
“tricolore” champion 2013/14 with champagne
and cake, admiration, heartfelt applause and
congratulations!
Eighth Interactive Conference
Wednesday, May 21, 2014
Intercultural diversity by Nathalie De Broux
Long time PWA member Nathalie De Broux gave a
very interesting and interactive speech about cultural
diversity and its significance in international companies and associations. Understanding business partners’ culture-based habits and beliefs can be crucial
to a negotiation’s or meeting’s success. For example
decision processes differ largely from culture to culture and participating in a multicultural meeting can
become frustrating if one does not understand and
respect the other participants’ cultural traits.
The conference participants got truly involved in the vivid discussion about
cultural diversity and found several cultural aspects - varying, sometimes even
contrasting concepts of time, privacy, distance and accuracy, only to name
a few - that can be complicated to overcome. One should go to international
meetings and occasions with an open mind and only after having studied the
counterparties’ cultural habits.

Tenth ConneXion ad Alta Quota
Wednesday, June 4, at Mecenate Hotel
The tenth, inspiring PWA ConneXion was organized at the beautiful roof top terrace of Hotel Mecenate. The special guest was Hon. Lella Golfo, who presented
her recently published autobiographic book, Ad Alta Quota. One of her biggest
achievements as former member of the Italian Parliament was to push through
the “pink quota law” that regulates the number of women in public and stock
quoted companies. She is also the Founder and President of the Marisa Bellisario Foundation. Mrs. Golfo talked about her childhood in a poor, rural area of
Southern Calabria and how seeing uneducated women that were exploited as
gelsemine and olive pickers on the fields lit her
passion to help women reach independence
in their lives.
Hon. Lella Golfo was awarded the TIAW World
of Difference 100 Award that is given worldwide to 100 men and women that have contributed positively to the economic emancipation of women in their own country.
The evening was lead by Francesca Chialà (in the far-right photo) who is a part
of the executive committee of the Teatro dell’Opera and a member of the
Marisa Bellisario Foundation. The foundation, among several other important
projects, promotes young female graduates and sends their matching CVs to
companies such as Enel and Lottomatica that are willing to hire the candidates.

A TRIBUTE TO BRAZIL’S FIRST WOMAN SURGEON DOCTOR
She would make the announcement
to the patient’s family: “We have to operate on the patient.” Then would come the
question: “When will we meet the doctor?”
When she said it was her, she still had to put
up with: “You’re kidding, right?” The scene
was common in the early career of one of
the brightest surgeons in the world, Brazilian
born, daughter of Lebanese immigrants, ANGELITA HABR-GAMA: the first woman to specialize in surgery at the Hospital of Medical
School, University of São Paulo. Actually, correction: she was the first woman to become
a surgeon in the country. Therefore, you can
certainly understand the astonishment of
the patients. Born on the island of Marajó,
Pará state, northeast Amazon, with a population today of ONLY 250.000... Imagine in
her days. An island as big as Switzerland,
isolated from the mainland, connected by
a limited ferry system to the city of Belem,
which is 4 hours away from Sao Paulo flying
by modern jet planes.

Angelita always caused major surprises.
She had everything to become a teacher,
like the girls in her family. But fate led her to
a medical school: she decided to apply for
a vacancy and history changed its course.
The call, however, came in earnest when
she stepped into a surgical centre. There,
she realised her skills with a scalpel - in her
own words - were “almost innate.” She specialized in general surgery between 1958
and 1959, then focused on operations of the
digestive tract. Does it end there? No way! In
1961, she decides to specialize in coloproctology. That is, to operate on intestines, rectum and anus .... It can’t have been easy,
but who said it ever stopped her? When she
pleaded a vacancy at St. Mark’s Hospital in
England, to act alongside big (male) names,
she heard: “This here is a hospital of men.”
To what she replied: “Well, doctor, wait and
see, I’m a different woman”. Head Professor
of the most important Medical School in Brazil, the Universidade de São Paulo, Angelita
teaches courses in the best medical colleges of the globe, has won hundreds of prizes
and recognitions and continues with her
penchant for pioneering . In 2002 she was
the first woman to join the American Surgical
Association. And in 2006, the first professional
woman surgeon to be part of the European
Surgical Association.
Thank you, Doctor. We are so proud of
you.

MR LUMAS:
FEDERICO MARIA
GALBIATI: CREATIVITÀ E INNOVAZIONE
Un prodotto ecologico e un design giovane e informale. Sono le
magliette Lumas,
E come
Federico afferma: “Cavalcare l’onda
verde”.
E cosa haI creato?
“A giovani dai 16 anni in poi. A persone che
quando decidono di acquistare qualcosa
hanno ben chiaro il rapporto tra qualità
e prezzo. A tutti quelli che hanno rispetto
per la natura. Il costo delle mie magliette è
sicuramente medio/alto in quanto il tessuto
è qualitativamente superiore al cotone
che troviamo sul mercato, ma durano nel
tempo.

VP Women & Technology - Professional Women International (Belgium), PWI Magazine 1st Q 2014
The next Revolution for Higher Education?
When we think of higher education, we normally think of spending 3 to 5 years of study, in a well-known institution at a considerable cost. What if you could follow the same courses from the comfort of your home, at
your own pace, and with a much lower cost or even for free? Welcome to the world of Massive Open Online
Courses.
Massive Open Online Courses
(MOOCs, pronounced “mooks”) are
online courses open to almost everybody who has access to the Internet, and they are also usually free,
or very accessible.
Top class universities such as the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Michigan or more nearby the Université
Catholique de Louvain (UCL) have
already adopted this trend and are
offering very interesting subjects.
Many others are following, as they
see this opportunity as the evolution
of the traditional distance education, and a new way to extend their
reach to a public that was not theirs
before as the cost doesn’t vary
much even for thousands of students more.
How does it work?
Go to edX, Coursera, or just google
‘MOOC’ and browse through the
list of courses until you find a subject you are interested in. To follow
a course you have to enroll by giving your name and email coordinates, and don’t forget to check the
schedule associated with it: there is
a beginning date, a given rhythm at
which you’ll be presented with the
lessons, and exam dates. The course
is usually given through videos or
podcasts (audio) that are released
every 1 or 2 weeks, and there are exercises and assignments to be done
and transferred to the website.
As the audience is extremely large
(there are courses of up to 100.000
students enrolled), the assistance
and evaluation is a crucial issue in
the MOOCs development. It’s impossible to have as many assistants
as would be required to correct
each assignment :- ), and though it
is easy to automatically correct multiple choice questions, it’s less obvious to provide help and feedback
on why the student is mistaken.
Also not everything can be evalu-
ated
through
multiple-choice
questions, some subjects demand
open questions. Imagine a Creativity course, how could you put the
choices in advance when you are
asking creativity from people? And
what about courses that aim at
teaching you writing techniques?
You would like them to provide a
sample of a text that respects certain constraints, not easy to automatically correct that. Not to count
the easiness of cheating if you manage to have the file with the results
for a questionnaire …
So they have come up with different techniques to cope with these
challenges, such as promoting peerevaluation, crowdsourcing corrections and more.
The platform where you enroll for a
course also provides interactive forums that help build a community for
the students and professors. It is nice
not to feel alone, to share your problems and get some answers or to
help others to solve theirs and gain
some reputation on the community.
The impact on traditional education
Classical education is usually given
through classes consisting of a professor speaking and conveying all
the theoretical information. The student has then to understand and
memorize this, do exercises and he/
she is ready for the exam.
Now that so much information is
reachable through Internet, there is
no reason to attend classes. Even if
we are not talking about closing universities and other institutions, you
could have ‘The Best’ professor on a
particular subject in a video. Professors would be more useful indicating
where to find the information, and
being there in the class to help interpret it, to discuss and go further on
the subject.

trend.
Best tool for Continuous Education!
What about the millions of other
people who are not planning to
enroll in higher education? MOOCs
allow anybody to learn about different subjects. But anybody means
people with different backgrounds,
who may not complete the full
course because of lack of previous
knowledge, but also with different
interests and studying for different
reasons, so they may need only a
topic of the course. MOOCs are being designed for that use, they are
usually structured in logical units,
chapters talk about a specific topic,
so you can take whatever part you
want to learn, and just ignore the
rest.
MOOCs statistics
How are MOOCs doing? It’s clear
that not all who enroll finish the
course, but statistics can be depressing: they show that about 50% of enrolled students quit in the first week
and 16% do so in the second week.
And only 5% obtain a certificate of
completion.
Are these numbers showing MOOCs
are not doing well? Not if we take
into account that some people take
just the chapters they are interested
in, and disregard the rest. And many
others who register for a course are
engaging substantially even though
not earning a certificate. Registering for a course does not imply the
11
student is committing to complete
it; he/she just studies what he needs
from it.
Justin Reich & Andrew Ho wrote an
article about why traditional evaluation measures like completion rates
are not good to evaluate the success of MOOCs:
“One of the first HarvardX courses,
JusticeX, was originally produced as
a PBS series by WGBH in Boston. Professor Michael Sandel has 12 video
lectures from that series that were
posted on YouTube in September of
2009. The first video has nearly 5 million views. The second has 1.2 million
views. By the fifth video, views have
declined to about 200,000 views for
each video. Rather than decry this
“5 percent completion rate” as a
crisis in public broadcasting, we find
it remarkable that Michael Sandel
can post a 45 minute video lecture
on moral reasoning and get 5 million
views. Anyone who watched one
video or all twelve is a little wiser for
their efforts.
Societal changes
· Democratizing education
Last year, Stephen Colbert from
Comedy Central’s Colbert Report interviewed Anant Agarwal, the president of edX, a MOOC platform that
hosts courses from HarvardX and
MITx. Stephen asked: ‘why those
universities would offer the courses
for free?’ Anant said they follow this
motto ‘Educating the world is a better world for everybody’
As the best known universities are
doing MOOCs, they are giving the
opportunity to anyone around the
globe who has Internet access to
attend excellent education. It’s democratizing education, and I’m sure
it will translate in a boom of start-ups
that will boost innovation and the
economy.

· Learn-as-you-need
Another radical change is the fact
that you can search for courses
on the topics that you need in a
particular moment, without having to commit to a full educational
course of studies. This trend is called
‘learn-as-you-need’. Higher education offers predefined degrees that
contained a fixed list of courses you
have to follow. With the abundance
of MOOCs, you have the freedom
to choose among different subjects
as you please, and you could customize the learning to your specific
need or will. This is particularly interesting duringcontinuous education,
as advances in technology create
new fields in your profession, but
also along the way you may need
competences in domains other than
your studies.
· Change of values: knowledge as a
valuable asset?
committing yourself to a curriculum
with a fixed calendar and known
goals, you are forced to review your
priorities, and focus on getting the
maximum benefits from your time at
university. With the overabundance
of MOOCs, this sense of focus, and
clear objectives is reduced to your
own inner motivations. There will always be another chance to take
that MOOC, especially if the cost
of missing the current one is zero.
So you risk entering into a perpetual cycle of postponing finishing the
courses that you have started.
In conclusion, MOOCs may change
higher education in the future, but
for now it’s a superb tool to update
yourself and learn all those subjects
you were interested in but haven’t
had the time to look into them.
We will do a presentation about
MOOCs at PWI, come and ask me
the best courses I took!
Professors and other people with
great knowledge are seen as an
important group in society. It takes
time to reach that level of education, and the effort was equaled by
respect from society. But as everything in our economy, now that almost any subject is reachable and
there is an abundance of knowledge, its value diminishes. Value is
moving from just having the knowledge to how you use it.

What are the actual shortfalls of
MOOCs?
edX: http://www.edX.org/
The most important shortfall is the
loss of being part of the student body
of an institution. Spending part of
your day in the classroom, gives you
much more than raw knowledge,
it gives you access to other people
who are on a similar path, and who
are eager to share knowledge, discuss, argue and challenge the current status of the sciences, opening
your mind even further to new ideas.
Being in a ‘campus’ also allows for
the creation of your future professional network.
Unfortunately this side of the experience of being a student cannot
be fully replaced with technology,
though a limited version is being
done through the forums that allow
user exchanges, creating even reputations for some contributors along
the way.
There is also the issue of focus. By

MOOCs for Marketing: CASE HISTORY Matt Grant Returns to Marketing Smarts
Knowing what makes for an effective content strategy
and implementing one are two different things : “It’s
relatively simple to say how a content strategy should
be developed and implemented, and it’s relatively
challenging to do that in a real, living organization,
where things are already happening. Aquent›s been
around for 27 years, so we have clients, we have business, we have operations happening. Coming into
the middle of it and trying to set a course when you›re
also just trying to do the things that need to happen
right now can be very challenging. I think it›s made
me appreciate much more the challenges faced
by anyone doing content out there at any organization.»
Having content go viral only works for marketing if the
content aligns with your business objectives: when
you’re doing content, you have to think...not just
about getting the buzz, but what can you...do with
the buzz? It’s kind of funny where you can get something that has pretty long legs...in one forum, but you
really do have to ask yourself, ‘Is this going to benefit
my business at all?’
The standard isn’t “really useful content”: it’s “content
that gets used.” : “For me, blogging, doing podcasts,
being involved with webinars, producing whitepapers and things like that...even video, too, I’m pretty
comfortable working with that stuff. But...I saw Tamsen Webster speaking at a conference...and she said
something really interesting. She said ‘the standard
isn’t really useful content: the standard is content that
gets used.’ I’ve really been thinking about that...because...when I joined Aquent, it was to focus on this
one initiative that we have called Aquent Gymnasium, which offers free online courses for designers and
developers.... We know from talking to our clients and
running focus groups what specific skills our prospects
are looking for and the specific kinds of skills that they
have a hard time filling.... We’ve always been involved
in this kind of training and teaching and tying it to
specific, marketable skills. Now...massive open online
courses (MOOCs)...are supposed to be a very disruptive technology that’s supposed to change higher
education.... We decided to use that technology for
our own content marketing purposes.... Interestingly
enough, we had about 18,000 people who registered
with Aquent Gymnasium. We’ve had a very good response, and I think the beauty of this is that it is true,
pure content marketing. The courses we produce...
are the kind of thing people charge for, but we’re
giving away for free, and the way we’ve designed
them [is]...very practical, so by the end of the course,
you should be able to do something you couldn’t do
before.... From a content consumer’s standpoint, we
have produced something people can use. To go
back to Tamsen’s standard, this is usable content.”

Liceo delle Scienze Umane di Bassano Romano –
Fondazione Tender to Nave Italia
By Giorgia Montesano, 17 years old, PWA’s youngest member
I was very lucky to be chosen as one of the six
students from my school to take part in a project
whose goal is to develop and enhance the team
work skills of disabled youngters. Here follows a
day in the life of …
Civitavecchia,
Molo
Sardegna,
Albatross is ready to spread its wings.
11:00hrs.
Forty-five members of an unforgettable crew, that
will remain in the memory of each participant in
this project which with Liceo delle Scienze Umane
di Bassano Romano is the only one in the Viterbo
province to have had the honour of opening the
portal of their horizons to social integration in a
journey in which the feeling of freedom and respect of the rules live together in perfect harmony
like a wave forced up by the wind.
The Tender to Nave Italia foundation welcomed
25 high school participants with salmaster honours by the crew of 21 professional sailors and a
senior educator who immediately appealed to
the strong points of every student: enthusiasm,
with a will to achieve and the desire to work as
part of a group. These ingredients form the basis
of an educational journey by Liceo delle Scienze
14
Umane whose headmaster Pasquale Picone has
been the captain for years.
Lat 42°05’30’’N. and Long.011°47’30’’E.: Anchored in a port for unfavorable navigation
conditions, the Albatross crew spent the first day
aboard gaining confidence with the ship and its
crew. After becoming acquainted with the expert
crew of 21 led by Capt. Andrea Barbalonga, the
high school team experienced its first lesson on
safety, instrumentation and ship logistics.
Then the group planned working rosters relative to
the activities at sea and learning programmes for
the following days.
Worthy of note is Steven Lavini’s assistance and
solidarity, particularly attentive to the needs of his
autistic cabin mate, Niccolò Piccioni. However,
during this first day all members of the crew distinguished themselves for punctuality and respect
for the regulations just like any sailor as soon as he
first steps on board.
00:30 hrs debriefing with the Nave Italia team. Tomorrow new waves of emotions!

Parlamento Europeo in forte ascesa
complessivamente attribuite a livello nazionale, oltre
nelle precedenti elezioni europee.
