Greetings from the President
Dear Members of the Dante Alighieri Society,
I am happy to bring this edition of Dante Oggi to you and to
congratulate my committee for a very successful start to the year.
In February both the primary and secondary schools were informed
of our Poster, Literary and Poetry Recitation Competitions and
students have responded with their participation in record numbers
once again. Congratulations to all the winning students and to all the
schools who participated in the competitions.
Following the presentation of awards to the university students at
the Garden Party that was held at the Assisi Centre in Rosanna, our
main focus of attention has been the format and presentation for
the National Dante Alighieri Society Conference which we are proud
to host here in Melbourne for the presidents and representatives of
the Dante Societies of Australia and New Zealand. This Conference
will be held on the 10th, 11th and 12th October and is appropriately
titled Quo Vadis – The future of the Italian Language in Australia. It
promises to offer the opportunity to make the whole community
more aware of the need to address the importance of maintaining
and enriching the Italian language and culture in the school
curriculum and nationally.
Presently there are many excellent programs in place, nevertheless
it is important to consider new strategies that will encourage the
implementation of new initiatives as well as objectives to overcome
barriers where these exist. To this end, invitations have been extended
to a wide spectrum of guest speakers from University academics,
principals of primary and secondary schools, teachers, students
and politicians. We hope to attract a wide audience, who in turn will
have an opportunity to provide feedback on their experiences.
More activities have been planned by our committee of management
and therefore, I urge you to support the future events. Information
will be sent to you via mail or the internet.
My sincere gratitude goes to Tania Barbati and Ester Marcuccio who
once again this year have excelled in their organisation of the Poster
and Poetry Competitions. The culmination of their work will be in
evidence at the Presentation of Awards ceremony to be held at the
University of Melbourne on the 12th September.
I look forward to seeing you at the Dante Society birthday lunch on
the 24th August; and to join the committee for the films that have
been organised for you throughout the next month’s Film in Città.
We will be arranging group bookings for our membership to view
one or more films that will be screening during the Lavazza Film
Festival. It will be a pleasure to see you there also.

Dear Members of the Dante Alighieri Society,
I take this opportunity to thank Mr Nicolas Panayotis for his thorough
preparation of the Lectura Dantis and my sincere gratitude to all
the readers and participants. It was very encouraging to see many
of our members attend a visit to the National Gallery of Victoria
exhibitions that we organised. Both exhibitions were presented very
professionally by the staff of the NGV. Thank you to Marco Lacivita
who has organised the screening of 5 films over the coming months.
I hope to see many of you present as they are suitable viewing for
university students and members of the Society Please bring along
your friends also. A list of the films is on page 6.
This edition of Dante Oggi brings you reports of our past activities
and I sincerely thank Claudia McLean, Lavinia Setini, Tom Hazell and
Francesca Valdinoci & Elisa Lolicata (NOMIT) for their contributions.

Società Dante Alighieri 2014
Il Garden Party annuale ha dato il via al fitto calendario di
manifestazioni e incontri della Società Dante Alighieri nel 2014.
Questa festa in giardino, avvenuta sabato 15 marzo presso il Centro
Assisi per Anziani di Rosanna, è un appuntamento annuale per soci,
amici e simpatizzanti della Dante che si ritrovano dopo le vacanze
estive e inoltre è anche quando i migliori studenti di italiano delle
principali università del Victoria vengono premiati.
Gli studenti sono stati selezionati dalle seguenti università:
Melbourne, Monash Deakin, Swinburne e La Trobe e hanno ricevuto
i premi donati dagli sponsor: Dr. Soccorso Santoro, Prof. Colin e
Josephine McCormick, Elsie Valmorbida, Eusebio e Giovanna
Marcocci, l’ Italian Medical Society.
Sono stati anche premiati con le borse di studio 2014, il giovane
direttore d’orchestra Patrick Burns e lo studente universitario di
lettere ed economia e commercio Mark Maliakal. Entrambi si sono
recati in Italia per frequentare corsi per l’approfondimento della
lingua italiana che arriccherà la loro vita professionale.
La Società Dante Alighieri, ha tenuto con successo il concorso di
poesia, letteratura e poster per le scuole, ha presentato la Lectura
Dantis e continua tuttora le classi di conversazione per gli studenti
del VCE. A partire dalla fine di agosto, la “Dante” presenterà una
rassegna di 6 film italiani ambientati in 6 diverse città italiane. Il
gruppo di “Dante Giovani” sta mettendo a punto attività che
possano incrementare il numero di nuovi giovani soci della Società
e che diano impeto con la loro voglia di fare alla nostra importante
organizzazione.
Le lezioni sulla Divina Commedia sono ancora una volta offerte
dalla Societa` Dante Alighieri nella propria sede a Carlton ed anche
tramite Skype.
È con grande piacere che la Dante quest’anno ha instaurato un
rapporto di amicizia e collaborazione con Nomit (Italian Network
of Melbourne) formato da un energetico gruppo di giovani italiani
recentemente giunti nella nostra città e che qui si sono stabiliti. Con
l’appoggio del Console, Dott. Marco Maria Cerbo, già operano uno
sportello presso il consolato italiano per assistere in modo pratico i
giovani italiani che arrivano in gran numero dal Bel Paese.
Nomit inoltre utilizza uno spazio presso l’ufficio della Dante ogni
giovedì dalle 3 alle 5 del pomeriggio per venire incontro ai quei
giovani nuovi arrivati che portano con loro un bagaglio culturale che
può portare allo sviluppo di progetti a base culturale. C. McLean

The Italian Language Applauded
With Pride and Joy at the Annual
Garden Party
The opening of the Dante Alighieri Society in Melbourne on the
15th March once again celebrated the university students’ high
achievements for their study of Italian in 2013. A very proud group
of parents and friends were invited to attend the ceremony and all
present witnessed the students receive their award for excellence.
These awards are given to encourage the young students continue
their pursuit of excellence and to continue the study of Italian in order
to enrich their future and their career. Present at the ceremony that
was held in a comfortable room at the Assisi Centre for the Aged
in Rosanna, were professors from the Universities in Victoria, the
Italian Medical Society, as well as representatives from the Santoro
and McCormick families. The Dante Alighieri Society is very grateful
for the generosity and collaboration that continues to strengthen
with the Santoro and McCormick families. Their continued support
demonstrates a strong belief in the maintenance of Italian at the

Scholarships to Italy
At the same Garden Party ceremony the president Dr Dominic
Barbaro welcomed Mrs Elsie Valmorbida and Mr Maurizio Marcocci
of Casa e Bottega Café & Restaurant who donated two scholarships
in 2013 for the purpose of studying Italian in Italy. Congratulations to
Mr Patrick Burns – music conductor and Mr Mark Maliakal student
of Swinburne University of Technology.
Vorrei ringraziare il donatore della borsa di studio la famiglia Marcocci
se non fosse stato per il loro appoggio e la sua generosità non avrei
potuto avere modo di fare uno scambio in Italia nei mesi prossimi. Mi
piacerebbe ringraziare anche la Societa’ “Dante Alighieri” d’avermi
assegnato la borsa di studio.
Faro’ uno scambio interculturale questo novembre a Camerino
presso la scuola “Dante Alighieri” che durera’ per quasi un trimestre.
Alla scuola “Dante Alighieri” studiero’ la cultura italiana e l`italiano
e sono sicuro che sara’ un’ esperienza piacevole e indimenticabile.
Lo scambio mi darà una marcia in piu’ sopratutto quando mi saro’
laureato in Lettere e Commercio.
Mark Maliakal
Sono stato molto onorato vincere la borsa di studio 2014 dalla
Società Dante Alighieri di Melbourne. L’ Italiano è molto importante
per il mio lavoro come un direttore d’orchestra ed opera.
Nel mese di gennaio, ho studiato un corso intensivo di lingua presso
l’Instituto Italiano di Firenze. Questo è stato un ottimo corso di lingua.
La mattina abbiamo avuto lezioni per quattro ore poi nel pomeriggio
abbiamo fatto escursioni in diverse località di Firenze. Ho anche
girato un pò le città di Roma, Siena, Milano e Bologna e il momento
culminante per me è stato visitare il Teatro la Scala di Milano.
Da quando sono tornato a Melbourne, ho lavorato per una
compagnia chiamata XL Arts. Questa compagnia gestisce un corso
per insegnare ai giovani cantanti come imparare un ruolo d’opera.
L’opera insegnata in questo corso è Le Nozze di Figaro di Mozart.
Grazie alla borsa di studio della Società sono in grado di aiutare
giovani cantanti con la loro pronuncia italiana.
Nel 2015, tornerò in Italia per studiare ancora la bella lingua e
per prepararmi per alcune presentazioni d’opera che condurrò a
Melbourne.
Molte grazie alla Signora Valmorbida per il suo generoso sostegno di
questa borsa di studio. Grazie anche alla Società Dante Alighieri che
ha avuto l’ iniziativa per sostenere la mia carriera.

Lectura Dantis
La Lectura Dantis è un’iniziativa culturale che ogni anno si svolge con
l’intenzione di celebrare la cultura italiana, e con essa il padre della
lingua e della letteratura omonima: il celebre e incomparabile Dante
Alighieri.
Nella varie sedi mondiali della Dante Alighieri Society l’evento è
sempre inestimaiblmente accolto e profondamente sentito, e cosi, lo
scorso 18 Maggio la Dante Alighieri Society di Melbourne ha invitato
tutti gli più appassionati all’Istituto Coasit di Melbourne, per una
domenica all’insegna dell’arte, della cultura e della passione per la
nostra amata cultura italiana.
Gli incipiti di 3 canti della Divina Commedia sono stati scelti per
celebrare questo il dio della letteratura e filosofia italiana: il caleberrimo
Dante Alighieri.
Cinque esperti di letteratura e cultura italiana (Nick Panayotis, Paolo,
Baracchi, Linda di Virgilio, Antonio DePorpertis e Lavinia Setini)
sono stati scelti per impersonare e recitare i suddetti canti. L’incontro
pomeridiano si è aperto con un caldo benvenuto e i più sentiti omaggi
da parte del presidente della Dante Alighieri Society di Melbourne, il
Dott. Dominic Barbaro. A questa si è succeduta un’eloquentissima e
profonda interpretazione della storia della letteratura dantesca di uno
dei più riconosciuti attori italiani del momento a Melbourne: il celebre
Mimmo Mangione. Successivamente la lettura si è protratta per
oltre una coinvolgente e interessante mezz’ora, in cui i vari passaggi
della Divina Commedia, introdotti da intervalli musicali ad opera
dei bravissimi musicisti Joshua Chang e Hillary Mansour venivano
egregiamente interpretati.
La risposta del pubblico è stata come ogni anno fortissima e senz’altro
riconoscente! Un rinfresco ha accompagnato le successive riflessioni
dei partecipanti, che hanno cosi condiviso le loro idee sulla serata e
le loro personali disgressioni su questa nostra amata cultura italiana.
Certo, è stata indiscutibilmente una bella serata. Certo, l’iniziativa si
ripeterà il prossimo anno ancora più brillantemente. Certo la Dante
Alighieri Society ringrazia orgogliosa, e vi invita tutti numerosi alla
prossima edizione, non dimenticando di visitare il suo sito web per i
futuri numerosi eventi, che indubbiamente come questo sarebbe un
profondo peccato perdere... L. Setini

Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition 2014
…E si è conclusa con grande clamore lo scorso venerdi 18 luglio
la finale della Dante Poetry Competition presso l’Old Arts Building
dell’università di Melbourne.
La competizione, brillantemente organizzata dalla Dante Alighieri
Society, ha avuto luogo, come ogni anno, nella rinomata università,
prevedendo l’incontro/scontro dei più brillanti studenti di italiano, che
da tutto il Victoria, e dall’anno 9 all’anno 12, sono impavidamente
scesi in campo (spesso anche a costo di numerosi chilometri) per
dispiegare il loro talento nella performance di poesie o discorsi
autoredatti esclusivamente in italiano!
L’emozione è stata tanta, l’affluenza illimitata! Anche quest’anno,
infatti, la manifestazione ha contato più di tremila studenti, che si
sono esibiti durante l’ultima settimana di giugno presso l’Economics
Building detto Lo Spot dell’università di Melbourne, davanti ad una
giuria di qualificati insegnanti con la stessa passione ed il medesimo
ardore per la lingua e la cultura del Bel Paese.
Gli oltre 200 finalisti sono stati poi riconvocati venerdi 18 luglio per
la tranche finale, che ha deciso le prime tre posizioni per ogni livello
scolastico: primo, secondo e terzo classificato per l’anno 9, primo,
secondo e terzo classificato per l’anno 10 e via dicendo fino all’anno
12!
I finalisti avranno l’onore di esibirsi un’ultima volta in occasione della
serata di gala, che come tutti gli anni avrà luogo il giorno 12 settembre
presso l’aula Magna chiamata Carillo Gantner del Asia Myer Centre
in Swanston Street Melbourne, e prevederà, grazie alla Dante Alighieri
Society e all’università di Melbourne, un bellissimo ed indimenticabile
spettacolo artistico all’insegna della lingua italiana, della letteratura,
della musica e del divertimento!
…La Dante Alighieri Society è orgogliosa di ringraziare tutti quanti
abbiano preso parte a questo memorabile e sempre unico evento,
e invita tutti quanti i lettori a partecipare animosamente alla serata
di premiazione, per stringersi forte insieme, celebrando ancora una
volta questa nostra lingua italiana e la nostra cultura che da sempre ci

Carlo Anthony Bracchi
Carlo Anthony Bracchi who died recently at the age of 89 years
was a member, in fact the senior member, of an old Italian family
long established in Melbourne. Italian migration to Australia and
to Melbourne, in particular, tended to come in waves and the
Bracchi family belongs to the first wave which arrived in the
19th Century. In Melbourne, they joined a small closely knit
community who included artists, artisans, musicians and
former gold prospectors who had been successful or not on
the gold diggings of post-1852.
The Bracchi family emanated from Cremona, in Northern Italy,
famous as being the birthplace of Stradivarius, the renowned
violin maker. Depending on when they left Italy and bearing
in mind that they pre-dated Italian unity, in its complete form,
they were either citizens of the Kingdom of Sardinia (including
Piemonte) or of Austria as part of the Kingdom of Lombardia /
Venetia. It would be a worthwhile exercise to do some research
on the background of the Bracchi family who quite likely are
amongst the first Italians to come to Australia.
Carlo’s father would seemingly have bene involved in the food
industry, in Melbourne. This was the destination of many newly
arrived people who clustered around the eastern end of Little
Lonsdale Street, Carlton, and South Melbourne. Perhaps they
had introductions to previously arrived migrants from their
home towns but of this we are not certain. These early arrivals
settled in well in their new land, apparently without the desire to
return to Italy at a later date. They intermarried with Italians, for
the most part and were well-accepted in Melbourne.
Amongst other families, in Melbourne, were the Gagliardis who
arrived certainly before the First World War. The members of
this family were distinguished musicians from Campania who
had performed in the San Carlo Opera House of Napoli. It
was into this family, at a later date, that Carlo Bracchi married
Filomena Gagliardi, known affectionately as Mimi. Mimi’s father
was an accomplished flautist, much in demand by Dame Nellie
Melba when the great diva’s voice began to falter.
Other Italian groups included those from the Aeolian Islands who
settled in the northern areas of the city. These arrivals seem to
have kept to themselves and to have not assimilated with other
Italians. One thing common to all groups was a love of Italia and
of their Italian backgrounds, even though the Italian language
fairly rapidly disappeared as a means of communication.
Otherwise, Italian culture and customs were maintained and
families lived in an atmosphere of “italianità”. I remember
that a visit to the Bracchi family home in North Carlton was
always a pleasure with exquisite Italian food, beautiful music,
great conversation but I cannot recall ever having heard Italian
spoken amongst the family and their friends.
Carlo Bracchi was quite passionate about Italian culture and
was a member of the Melbourne Dante for many years. As
a member of Council, as the governing committee was then
called, Carlo was a great events and functions organiser,
who brought his engineering training to the fore in presenting
beautiful occasions which were always successful. When he
felt that the time had come, the Dante accepted his resignation,
with regret. We missed Mimi who died some nine years before
Carlo. She, too, was passionate about things Italian and loved
to be present at Dante functions. We miss both of them and
the “italianità”, which they presented in their own unique way
to Melbourne, and for the valuable link with the past which they
represented. Our sympathies are extended to Stan, Raymond,

(Michele Riondino). Over the next ten years, Silvestro and
Camilla develop a strong bond…

Brother” leads him down a rabbit hole of skewed perceptions
and paranoia…

Genova is a beautifully nuanced drama about love, loss and
forgiveness, set against the captivating beauty of the city
Genova. Following a tragic accident, widowed Joe (Colin

his two young daughters to Genova, accepting a position at
the local university..

Victoria per “Un giorno su Dante”
Domenica 20 luglio i soci della Società hanno goduto di una giornata
dedicata a Dante e agli acquarelli dipinti dal poeta e artista William Blake fra
il 1824 e il 1827. Dei 102 acquarelli che Blake dipinse per illustrare i Canti
della Divina Commedia, 36 appartengono alla National Gallery del Victoria e
sono ora esposti in un’eccezionale mostra che finirà il 31 agosto.
Grazie alla gentile disponibilità di Caterina Sciacca, addetta ai programmi di
NGV, i soci della Dante hanno ascoltato due interessantissime presentazioni
su Dante, presso il teatro Clemenger della pinacoteca.
Il primo a parlare è stato il professore Stephen Kolsky dell’Università di
Melbourne che ha iniziato dando la ragione per la quale l’opera di Dante è
chiamata “Commedia”. Ha poi continuato spiegando la situazione politica
e sociale di Firenze durante la vita del poeta. Secondo la mentalità odierna,
ci si potrebbe stupire della punizione inflitta ad alcuni personaggi per crimini
che non sembrano così gravi, ma grazie al professore Kolsky abbiamo
capito come Dante la pensasse diversamente, perché uomo del suo tempo.
Il Dott. William Johnston del Yarra Theological Union ha poi preso la parola
e attraverso varie illustrazioni di altri artisti famosi, ha paragonato le abilità
di questi ultimi rispetto all’estro di William Blake. Molti sono stati i modi
di interpretare visualmente la Divina Commedia e grazie al Dott. Johnston
i presenti hanno constatato come questa opera immortale ha ispirato
innumerevoli artisti del passato e quelli più vicini ai nostri tempi.
Caterina Sciacca ha ringraziato la Società Dante Alighieri di essere presente
a questa giornata speciale e poi ha invitato i partecipanti ad entrare nella sala
della mostra per la visita guidata dalla curatrice Cathy Leahy. Gli acquarelli
sono disposti in penombra per proteggere la loro fragilità, perché la troppo
luce potrebbe sbiadirli. Ma nonostante questo le immagini di Blake sono
brillanti, lucenti, il rosso e il blu dei Santi e degli Angeli, Dante e Beatrice
scintillano grazie all’immaginazione del poeta e artista.
La maggior parte degli acquarelli sono dedicati all’Inferno e per questo i
colori sono forti e danno l’impressione delle fiamme, dei cieli tempestosi e
del suolo da cui salgono fumi solforosi. Quando si passa alle illustrazioni
del Purgatorio e del Paradiso tutto diventa più chiaro e trasparente.
Blake morì nel 1827, prima di portare a termine tutti gli acquarelli per la
Divina Commedia ed ecco perché alcune opere sono schizzi disegnati a
carboncino o a matita.
I soci della Società Dante Alighieri hanno avuto poi occasione di soffermarsi
con Caterina Sciacca per ringraziarla della sua collaborazione che continuerà
in futuro con l’organizzazione di altri appuntamenti culturali alla National

On Sunday 20th July, members of Dante Alighieri Society had the
opportunity to be part of a special event organised by NGV and the Program
Coordinator Ms. Caterina Sciacca for the exhibition of William Blake’s art,
in particular the group of his “The Divine Comedy” watercolours. The
gallery owns 36 of the 102 watercolours Blake painted to illustrate Dante
Alighieri’s famous poem.
The afternoon started with two lectures; the first one by Associate
Professor, Dr. Stephen Kolsky from the University of Melbourne and
the second by Dr. William Johnston, MCD University of Divinity. After
explaining why Dante’s work has the title of “Comedy” Prof. Kolsky gave
an overview of the political situation during the poet’s life and the reasons
why he placed some of the characters of the Comedy in various sections
of Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. According to modern values, some sins
and punishments would seem harsh, but Prof. Kolsky explained that we
must judge them as Dante would have in his time. Following Dr. Kolsky, Dr.
William Johnston showed slides of other artists’ illustrations of “The Divine
Comedy” making comparisons among the different styles and techniques.
After thanking “Dante Alighieri Society” for supporting and helping to
promote this event, Ms Caterina Sciacca led us into the exhibition where
the curator Ms Cathy Leahy, guided us through the collection and explained
how the NGV came to purchase the watercolours. William Blake was a
poet, equally famous for his written work as for his art. He died in 1827
before he could complete the illustrations for “The Divine Comedy” and
for this reason some are in pencil and black chalk and unfinished. Most
are dedicated to hell where colours are strong and others are watery,
bringing to mind sulphurous fumes of the damned world. As we move from
Purgatory into Paradise the palette changes and colours become lighter,
almost translucent.
A most informative and enjoyable day.
On the following Sunday, 27th July, on a bright sunny morning , members
of “Dante” had the privilege to view the exhibition “Italian Masterpieces
from Spain’s Royal Court, Museo del Prado” with a private guided tour and
lecture organised exclusively for us once again by Ms Caterina Sciacca.
With the aide of slides, Ms Sciacca outlined the many aspects of the
exhibition and explored the history of Italian art and the patronage by the
Spanish crown. 105 works are on display, it is the first time that they leave
Spain and they cover the period of Italian art from the early XVI to XVIII
century. They reflect the taste of the Spanish Royal Court whose Kings and
courtiers collected fine Italian art.
After the presentation by Ms Sciacca we felt quite informed on what to
look out for while admiring the paintings and what to expect to see in
the exhibition. Moving into the rooms where the paintings hang, we were
able to wander around at leisure and ask questions to Caterina. Numerous
sketches and paintings by Raphael, Correggio, Titian, Tintoretto, the
Carracci brothers and Tiepolo (father and son) and other artists were on
display showing to all beauty, lavishness and glory. The Dante Alighieri
Society is most grateful for the kind generosity of Ms Sciacca who took
time to make us feel very welcome. Thank you also to the National Gallery
of Victoria. Both exhibitions can still be visited until the end of August.
