It’s hard to believe that this incredible adventure has already been going for nine years, in which we have been honoured to present films brimming with unbridled creativity, innovation and imagination. ÉCU 2014 promises the same. I’d like to congratulate the 85 filmmakers in competition here at ÉCU 2014 and I wish them the best of luck. As a filmmaker myself, I understand the hard work and sacrifices it takes to get your vision onto the screen and we look forward to screening these great films to our audiences. Already this year we have been blown away by the cinematic spectacle GRAVITY and hurt to the core by the depravity brilliantly portrayed in 12 YEARS A SLAVE - and now at ÉCU 2014 we offer you a slate of incredible Indie films that will provoke you, taunt you, shock you and oh yes, they will entertain you. And you know what the best thing is? You’ll also get up close and personal with the many filmmakers that are attending. If you like their films, tell them. If you don’t, discuss that with them because this is one of the strengths of ÉCU - WE ARE FILMMAKERS FESTIVAL AND WE ARE PROUD OF IT. In addition to seeing nearly 100 of the world’s best indie films here at ÉCU, we also offer up a range of workshops, directors Q&A sessions, and of course killer after parties with musicians coming to us via our music partner Access Film Music. These parties are the glue that stick us together after a full-on day of screening though there have been moments when some of us have become mightily un-glued :). ÉCU-on-the-Road, where we take many of our Official Selection films on a world-wide tour, has expanded. We now have events in as far afield places as Australia and Brazil. The feedback we get from the filmmakers who are invited onto the tour has been very positive. They enter ÉCU and then have the opportunity to travel their films around the world, so I guess there is a lot to like about that, and the audiences revel in the fact these great films come to them. We officially launched the European Independent Film Channel (www.euroifc.com) less then 12 months ago and it has turned into a fabulous on-line viewing platform for people who love indie cinema. The channel offers filmmakers the chance to reach a global audience and to keep their films in front of people a lot longer. I strongly recommend that you go and have a look, if you want to see intelligent, creative and inspiring films. Oh, and did I mention it is legal and free? Without a dedicated, enthusiastic, and creative staff the festival wouldn’t be able to achieve its goals every year. I’d like to wholeheartedly thank, ÉCU’s Festival Manager Kadi Lokk (who is on her 4th festival and continues to work harder than all of us) as well as all of the ÉCU 2014 staff who work day and night so that we can offer our filmmakers and audiences a great festival experience. Car c’est l’un des points forts d’ÉCU : NOUS SOMMES LE FESTIVAL DES REALISATEURS ET NOUS EN SOMMES FIERS. En plus de présenter près de 100 des meilleurs films indépendants mondiaux, le festival ÉCU propose également une série d’ateliers, de sessions questions-réponses avec les réalisateurs, et bien-sûr, des soirées mémorables animées par les talents musicaux dénichés par notre partenaire Access Film Music. ÉCU-on-the-Road, grâce auquel nous emmenons en tournée mondiale beaucoup des films de la Sélection officielle, s’est élargi. Nous participons maintenant à des événements dans des lieux aussi lointains que l’Australie et le Brésil. Les retours que nous recevons des réalisateurs invités sur la tournée sont très positifs: Participer à ÉCU leur donne la possibilité de faire voyager leurs films à travers le monde.
