A report on the NONA Convention 2012
On September 29th and 30th, the quad annual Nichiren Order of North
America (NONA) convention had been held in Nevada, Las Vegas; coinciding
the Fifth Anniversary of the Nichiren Buddhist Kannon Temple of Nevada, and the
opening ceremony of the temple’s new building.
My wife and I had participated at this occasion, representing the Toronto
Nichiren Buddhist Temple. Other attendees included Bishop Kennichi Saito,
Director of Nichiren Shu Missionary Department; Bishop Eiyu Ishii, Chairman of
Nichiren Shu Overseas Provision Committee; and over 70 bishops, shonin, and
sangha members participating from Los Angeles, Seatle, Boston, Houston,
Nevada, Toronto, and Italy.
The NONA Convention had begun with a registration; an opening service;
presentation booths by participating NONA temples, reflecting the temple
activities throughout the year; a financial report by a NONA board member; an
explanation regarding the 100th Anniversary of the Los Angeles temple in 2014,
and other essential discussions.
In the evening, there was a banquet where we were entertained by a
Japanese drum performance by the Kaminari Taiko of Las Vegas. Following this,
there was a welcome greeting by Bishop Shokai Kanai, and a congratulatory
message from Mrs. Kathleen Blakely, Honorary Consul General of Japan in Las
Vegas.
Bishop Kennitsu Saito gave a speech about the Rissho Ankoku Ron, translated
in English as the “Treatise On Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Peace of
the Land”, written by Nichiren Shonin. Bishop Saito stated, “Peoples’ agitated
hearts influence the society to become distrupted. It is then the Lotus Sutra’s duty
to correct these peoples’ hearts. The temple and the sanghas shall strengthen
the bond of their souls, and spread the odaimoku.” The banquet ended with a
presentation on “The Early History of Nichiren-Shu in North America” by Dr.
Naofumi Annaka, a professor of Buddhist studies from Rissho University, Japan.
The Fifth Anniversary of the Nichiren Buddhist Kannon Temple of Nevada and
the opening ceremony of their new building had been held on Sunday afternoon.
The ceremony began with sange, scattering of flowers, and a tea ceremony to
offer tea on the altar. Their new building had been purchased with the support of
many of its members as well as the NONA temples. The building is currently under
construction and is to be ready by the end of the year.
It was a wonderful opportunity to attend the NONA convention, as I was able
to meet and interact with other sangha members and members of the Nichirenshu Headquarter; deepen my faith as well as the understanding of temple
management; and allow all the members to know about our temple.

９月２９日、３０日にネバダ州ラスベガスで開かれた第２７回日蓮仏教団
(NONA)教団大会及びネバダに日蓮仏教会観音寺創立第５周年記念移転開堂式に
トロント日蓮仏教会を代表して出席しました。
日本の宗務院から伝道教局長の斎藤憲一僧正、海外布教対策委員会委員長石井
英雄僧正他数名の高僧、北米開教区開教師の１２上人、ロスアンジェルス、シアトル、
ボストン、ヒューストン、ネバダ、イタリア、トロントの各寺院、サンガの日蓮宗信者代表、
信者ら約７０数名が参加しました。
２９日・朝８時１５分にレジストレーションを済ませた後、開会の法要、その後昼食をは
さんで各開教区の活動状況の紹介、NONA の会計報告、２０１４年にロスアンジェルスで
開催される北米開教１００年記念式典及び記念誌発行についての広告掲載の説明など、
さまざまの問題についての討議が夕刻まで続きました。
午後６時半からの晩餐会ではラスベガス雷太鼓グループのパーフォーマンス、金井
勝海上人の歓迎の挨拶、キャサリーン・ブレークリー・ラスベガス日本名誉領事の挨拶、
齋藤伝道局長の挨拶では「日蓮聖人御降誕 800 年に向けて宗門運動の『いのちに合掌』
といったら日蓮宗だ、ということを訴えたい。「立正安国論」で日蓮聖人が訴えたように、
人の心の乱れが社会の乱れにつながり社会の乱れが国土の乱れにつながる、人の心と
国土は一体不二の関係である。人の心を正しくしていくのが法華教のつとめであり、お題
目である。寺と信者が魂の結びつきを強め、お互いに助け合ってお題目の信仰を広めた
い」と教団の一致団結を訴えた。その後、立正大学仏教学部の安中尚史教授が「初期の
日蓮宗の北米での歴史」と題して興味のある講演を行った。
３０日午前中はネバダ日蓮仏教会観音寺創立第５周年記念本堂移転開堂式がありま
した。記念法要は散華に始まり献茶のお手前、日蓮宗和讃の奉唱、読経，ご本尊の開眼
が厳粛に執り行われた。最後に金井上人から大勢の皆様のサポートにより建物を購入し、
新開堂の改装工事が年内に完了する予定、との報告がありました。
私自身、この大会に出席して日蓮宗北米寺院、サンガのメンバーや宗務院関係者の
方々との交流を通じて、信仰が深まった事、参加者にトロント日蓮仏教会の存在を知って
もらった事、教会運営について学んだことなど意義多い２日間でした。
