Momiji Matters SERVING THE SENIOR COMMUNITY S PEC I A L E DIT IO N – S PR ING 2 016 What do you do when there are no government funding increases, more regulations, more reporting, and additional assessments, while at the same time a growing need to increase services? Well, you take a breath, roll up your sleeves, and work harder. M omiji has not received an increase to its base funding since 2006 in spite of: applying to the Ministry of Health’s Central East LHIN numerous times; our annual caseload has increased to providing services to 2,200 seniors and of these seniors the majority have come to require more complex care. This has left Momiji in a difficult spot. Do we start referring our seniors to higher care facilities or raise more funds to fill the funding gap? To us the answer is clear because Momiji is not just a place for seniors to live. It is their home. It is their community filled with friends and even family members. So despite the lack of government funding increases, Momiji will continue to find a way to meet the demands of our seniors’ growing needs so they can live their remaining years in their homes. In fact during these ten years of funding restraint, we have even enhanced many of our services to provide in-depth pro- grams for our most frail and vulnerable seniors. And we didn’t do this alone – we are so very grateful for the support provided through: • annual grants from the Momiji Foundation; • generous and strong support from the Japanese Canadian community and other donors; • an army of loyal and extremely hardworking volunteers; • dedicated and conscientious staff; and • involvement from tenant family members. But Momiji is now at a tipping point. This year, like most other charities, Momiji received less in general donations. Investment income from our reserved fund was in a negative position, our housing subsidy was reduced, and our building utilities (hydro, gas, water, etc.) were increased. And combine that with Government mandated wage increases for personal support workers, and last but not least inflation. So what has Momiji done about this? • Salaries have been frozen for years (except for personal support workers) • Staff training has been eliminated (except for mandatory training to provide services); • Probono services have been acquired for staff training, human resources and governance; • Operating costs such as supplies, printing and communications have been reduced to bare minimums; • Fundraising efforts have been increased to secure more cash and inkind donations; • Solicitation of sponsorships for Momiji programs and services (e.g. Lug-a-Mug celebrations); • Creation of social enterprises to produce an ongoing revenue stream; • and more. So how can you help? Continue to do all the wonderful and generous things you are already doing for Momiji, while considering becoming involved in some other ways to give. This special edition newsletter will provide you with many examples and ideas. To acquire more information on these and other ways to give contact our Economic Development department at 416.261.6683 x 259 or [email protected]. You can also visit our newly designed website that is filled with information to help you become involved at www.momiji.on.ca. On behalf of everyone at Momiji, I thank you for your ongoing support and shared vision to allow our seniors to age in place with as much respect, dignity and independence each individual circumstance allows. Birgitte Robertson, Executive Director MOMIJI HEALTH CARE SOCIETY IS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT CHARITABLE ORGANIZATION WHOSE OBJECTIVE IS TO ASSIST SENIORS, PRIMARILY OF JAPANESE CANADIAN DESCENT, AGE WITH RESPECT, DIGNITY AND INDEPENDENCE. Ways Of Giving O ur donors have been pivotal in helping Momiji honour its philosophy to allow seniors to age with respect, dignity and independence. Their many generous donations have kept our seniors physically, mentally and emotionally healthy – adding life to their days and days to their lives. Momiji has been so fortunate over the years to receive ongoing support through general donations and tribute gifts (in honour or in memory donations). These gifts have been and continue to be Momiji’s fundraising life line and will always be gratefully received. However, we want to let you know about a number of other ways that an individual or group can help make a difference to our seniors. Here are just a few…. Third party event: The Scottie Amemori Memorial Golf Tournament Scottie (Eizo) Amemori loved to golf, bowl, play cards and games, but most of all, he loved being a family man. Born in Vancouver in 1924, he was the fifth of six children. He and his wife, Isoko (Sugie), raised two daughters and were instrumental in raising his four grandchildren. After he retired, he had more time to spend golfing and bowling and playing cards with his grandsons. Competitive by nature, he was pleased when family members organized an annual family golf tournament. Although he always enjoyed his time on the course, it was the post-golfing event, when all of the family was together that he enjoyed the most. The family tournament was held for a number of years but as life got busier, the annual tournament subsided. In 2003, Scottie’s hope was to re-establish the family tournament but unfortunately, he passed away before he was able to accomplish this. In honour of this wonderful, caring family man, his grandson took over the reigns and founded – The Scottie Amemori Memorial Golf Tournament. “The new tournament was set up to bring families and friends together” said Chris Reid, the tournament organizer. Monthly donations In addition to getting the families together, this new tournament was also set up as a fundraiser and money is donated in Scottie’s name each year to a worthy charity. Many charities have benefitted and most recently Momiji with a $2,500 donation to help complete its Preserve the Legacy Campaign. If you are a golfer, you too can start your own family tournament and make a donation to Momiji and help our seniors. If you don’t golf, there are many ways that you can start your own third party fundraiser; age is no barrier since even young children can get involved by holding a bake sale or setting up a lemonade stand with the proceeds going to Momiji. Please contact us or visit our website www.momiji.on.ca/participate/ events/host your own event for more information. Creating a Legacy: Mr. Shoji Ito Shortly after Shoji Ito passed away in June of last year, he was able to fulfill his desire of honouring Momiji for the excellent care that he and his wife (who passed away in 2008) received. He did this by leaving a gift to Momiji in his Will. This primarily Japanese speaking couple were thrilled when they moved into Momiji since they could communicate and receive services in their preferred language of choice and they could socialize with other Japanese speaking seniors. Living at Momiji gave them peace of mind and made life happy. Their happiness was so noticeable and so appreciated by their family that when Mr. Ito passed away, the family asked that Koden be sent to Momiji in his memory. To create your own legacy, please contact Sheri-Lynn at 416.261.6683, ext. 259 or by email at [email protected]. “Mom has lived at Momiji for a long time now but it continues to amaze me how well Momiji staff take care of her by keeping her healthy and involved. I know that she is being well cared for and that gives me peace of mind. Becoming a monthly donor is my way of giving back!” - Tenant’s daughter. Making a monthly donation is easy and affordable. With this flexible option, you can easily increase or stop your donations at any time just by calling our office. Monthly donations save Momiji money as well since we will only send you a tax receipt once a year for your total gifts. These gifts also allow us to set more predictable budgets which enable us to better plan programming throughout the year. Join the growing number of donors who have become monthly supporters by filling out the monthly donor coupon today! Major gift donors: Mrs. Furuya and Mrs. Maruya Our tenants see first hand what a difference Momiji’s programs and services make in their life and in the lives of other seniors. We are extremely fortunate and are pleased to announce that two tenants have made substantial donations to Momiji. Harumi Furuya and her husband George made a significant donation to Momiji as a thank you for the exceptional care and kindness that they have received. The couple has appreciated the help that they received from Momiji staff, especially when dealing with nonJapanese speaking people. Mrs. Furuya says that she was able to make this dona- tion because her husband, a second generation Japanese Canadian, was a successful businessman. Masae Maruya and her family members (son-in-law Yu Kwong Li and daughter Susan Maruya) presented Momiji with a $50,000 donation. The donation is from Masae and her husband Satoshi. paperwork back to your company. We will then receive a cheque from your company. Some companies even match gifts from spouses and retirees! If your company doesn’t match gifts, why not encourage the management at your company to participate? Or if you own your own company, we would love to speak with you about creating sponsorship and donation opportunities that suit both yours and Momiji’s needs. Gifts-in-Kind Photo: Keaton Maruya-Li Mrs. Maruya understands the importance of giving back to the community. Before coming to Canada, she worked as a caregiver at a special needs school so she knows first hand the importance of social services and the costs associated with them. This belief was only further enhanced when she came to Canada. She believes that giving back to the community is very important so she decided to make this gift to Momiji. As a market leader in enterprise application software, SAP helps companies of all sizes and industries run better. SAP Canada serves over 2,300 customers and employs over 2,000 across Canada. Momiji is extremely grateful to SAP Canada for its recent donation of 7 Lenovo ThinkPads and 17 iPads bringing technology to our Support Services department and helping us run better. Wedding Gift Mitsui Foundation donation Matching & Corporate Gifts There are hundreds of companies in Canada that will match donations made by their employees to organizations like Momiji -- companies like The Royal Bank of Scotland plc, Canada Branch. One of their employees, Cindy Fukakusa has taken advantage of this opportunity which has benefitted Momiji and is a simple and effective way to increase the impact of her gift. “My Uncle lives at Momiji and by participating in this program, I can further help Momiji continue on with their excellent work. All you need to do is look into your corporate policies or contact your human resources, personnel or community relations office for more information,” says Cindy. If your company requires that you fill out a form, you can send the completed form in with your donation to Momiji. We will confirm that the gift has been received and will return the necessary daughters of Kiyo and Sylvia Ise the choice was easy – they decided to sponsor the cost of EPC’s Lug-a-Mug celebration on the months of their parents’ birthdays. Lug-a-Mug is one of Momiji’s most popular events and provides our tenants with an afternoon of entertainment, refreshment and social interaction. This is just one of many EPC programs that help reduce isolation while promoting good health, well-being, safety and independence. There are still 10 Lug-a-Mug months available for sponsorship that can provide you and your family members a great way to celebrate and honour your seniors’ birthdays. Like most brides and grooms to be, Dereck Oikawa and Christine Ling had a lot of planning to do for their wedding. Yet they planned on giving a gift to Momiji in lieu of Bombonieres. “We have chosen this charity because they are very close to our hearts and that of both families. Over the past 10+ years, Momiji has provided the utmost care in assisting elderly family members to live independently in their own apartments and has given them access to remain involved within the community.” Congratulations to the happy couple and thank you! Get together as a family and help sponsor an event, like Lug-a-Mug What do you buy your parents when they don’t need or want anything? For Momiji is very grateful for the Mitsui Foundation’s [Mitsui & Co. (Canada) Ltd.] continued support. Since 2010, Mitsui has contributed a total of $30,000 to Momiji. Without generous donors like Mitsui we would not be able to provide quality services and programs to Japanese Canadian Seniors. Mitsui’s mission and values are in line with Momiji’s and we are proud to be associated with them. Upcoming Events Fun, Food and Finds at Momiji’s Community Bazaar This year’s edition of our Community Bazaar will be held on Saturday, April 2nd from 12:00 to 3:30 pm at Momiji’s Frank H. Hori Community Centre (3555 Kingston Road, Scarborough). This much-loved tradition dates back more than twenty years and is our largest annual fundraising event. As always, the Momiji Bazaar will offer something for the entire family to enjoy: valuable bargains, delicious Japanese cuisine (including manju, Karinto, and freshlymade sushi and chow mein) to eat in or take out, a bake table with a vast assortment of treats, a large Silent Auction, and a Collectibles Corner where you are sure to find a treasure or two. Momiji relies on the community for donations of new or gently used, previously loved items and delicious home baking and manju. All donations are gratefully accepted, but please, no used clothing or furniture. Volunteers are also crucial to our success and are needed to help us leading up to the day of the Bazaar, with the sorting of donations, participating in one, or more, of our famous bees: karinto, sushi, tsukemono and vegetable preparation and pie-making, and of course, set-up. We also need volunteers to help clean up after the event. Proceeds from the Bazaar support Momiji’s programs and services for seniors, allowing us to pur- chase items and provide services that we would not be able to afford otherwise. Hundreds of seniors benefit each year from the funds this event generates. For more information on donating items contact [email protected] or 416.261.6683 x259. To learn more about volunteering contact Jovel@momiji. on.ca or 416.261.6683 x234. Calling all Bowlers! Momiji is hosting its annual fundraising Bowlathon on Saturday, May 14. Five Pin bowlers will be bowling at Parkway Bowl (Victoria Park and Ellesmere Road) while 10 Pin bowlers will be bowl- ing at Club 300 (Old Kennedy Road and Steeles). Bowling will be from 2:00 to 5:00 pm, followed by a Bento Box Dinner and Awards Ceremony at Momiji’s Frank H. Hori Community Centre. Proceeds from this fundraising event allow Momiji to purchase items that would not be affordable otherwise. For instance, last year’s proceeds allowed us to reupholster chairs in our Elderly Persons Centre and 9th Floor lounge to a high grade healthcare fabric, which improved comfort and cleanliness. Raising funds from the Bowlathon becomes more crucial each year as our seniors grow older, more frail and require more care. Since bowling fees and the cost of the meal are priced to be affordable, the donations and sponsorships that bowlers solicit from family, friends and commu- nity members are crucial in this fundraising effort. This year, to make soliciting donations as easy as possible, you can now collect donations online. Teams or individual bowlers are most welcome. To get involved in our Bowlathon, please contact Scott Ohashi at 416.261.6683 x221. Our Registration deadline is Monday, April 25th. Caregiving Support Need Help with your Income Tax Return? Momiji Community Lunches At Momiji, we know that food is a fundamental part of culture and that good nutrition and good health go hand in hand. That is why we offer many opportunities for seniors to enjoy a meal in a social setting. Lunches include April 21: West Toronto Christian Community Church, 1177 Central Pkwy W., Mississauga April 25: Canadian Japanese Cultural Centre of Hamilton, 45 Hempstead Dr., Hamilton April 27: Toronto Buddhist Church, 1011 Sheppard Ave W., North York May 5: J-Town Japanese Shopping Centre, 3160 Steeles Ave E., Markham May 19: West Toronto Christian Community Church, 1177 Central Pkwy W., Mississauga May 25: Japan Foundation, 2 Bloor Street E., 3rd Floor, Toronto Education Program essential to creating a life of meaning and quality. In fact, in the Education & Fitness Program’s entire history there has never been an overall increase to course fees. What you may not know is that the cost of your courses has been kept low through a generous subsidy provided by Momiji. However with ever rising utilities costs, and increasing pressure on Momiji to provide more life saving and urgent care for its aging senior population, Momiji will no longer be able to subsidize the Education & Fitness program in the future. There is good news though – to help reduce the impact of this unavoidable price increase, Momiji has made membership optional for the Education & Fitness students. Course Fees will be increased this Spring session. Please refer to the Spring brochure or the class instructor for the new fees. Another great way to minimize price increases is to increase course enrolment, so please consider inviting a family member, friend, neighbour or work colleague to join you in your favourite Momiji courses. Facebook Momiji has a NEW Website Did you know that Momiji Health Care Society has its own Facebook page? Momiji’s Facebook page is where you will find timely information on what is happening here at Momiji and in the community. It is also a great place to see photos of some of our events so why not visit our page and “Like” us? You may even see a familiar face, or two! Thanks to a generous grant from the Ontario Senior Secretariat (Government of Ontario), Momiji has been able to create a new senior-friendly website. This new website will allow us to better highlight our educational seminars, share more information with seniors and act as a resource for senior health related issues, especially in Japanese. Our new website will also help expand our volunteer network to active seniors by publicizing meaningful volunteer opportunities targeted to the 60+ demographic. You’ll even be able to sign up for our newsletter! Please take a look at www.momiji.on.ca. Sincere condolences are extended to the families of the following residents who passed away between July 1, 2015 to February 19, 2016: SAVE TIME AND MONEY Email address please! Momiji is now able to send tax receipts by email so when you are making a donation, please provide us with your email address. This will allow us to send you your tax receipt in an even more timely fashion. Email also lets us save the cost of stationary and postage, which is ever increasing and allows us to direct this money to where it is most needed – our seniors. Rest assured that your email will only be used by Momiji since we never rent, sell or trade any of our donor information.
