VDL Workplace Health and Safety Newsletter January 2013 Welcome Welcome to the VDL Workplace Health and Safety Newsletter This Editions Topic – Fencing Safety Both new and repair fencing is a critical element of daily farming operations. Specialised tools, skills and training are required to carry out these tasks safely and efficiently. There are many hazards associated with fencing. It is important that you are aware of the hazards so that you can avoid injury. In each edition we will outline a topic of importance to our Farming Business This newsletter is being written by members of the Work Health and Safety Group however contributions are always welcome Please circulate this newsletter to Personal Safety and Preparation • Wear appropriate PPE including, long trousers, long sleeve shirt, thick gloves, and eye protection to protect from wire and wood post injuries • Ear muffs are required if working with loud equipment or machinery • Hat and sunscreen for sun protection • Some fencing materials can be heavy, always use correct lifting techniques • Always carry a first aid kit • Ensure all tools are well maintained and appropriate for the proposed task everyone on farm Site Safety • Avoid cuts and scratches from high tension and old rusty wire. High tension wire is very “springy” when cut and can cause nasty injuries. When cutting wire ensure both sides are controlled to prevent the ends “whipping” • Do not overstrain wire, especially high tension wire; be aware of the recommended straining tensions. A wire tension meter or strain gauge can be used • Barbed wire is particularly dangerous if overstrained. Wire breakages can result in serious injury • Extreme caution should be taken with motorized machinery such as post hole borers, chainsaws, and tractor mounted Post Drivers. Only properly trained operators are to use this machinery and appropriate PPE must be worn • Keep the site tidy to avoid trip hazards • Be aware of snakes in areas of long grass • Children and livestock need to be kept away from the work site When Finished • Wire off cuts and staples should be carefully picked up as they are a risk to people, livestock and machinery. Dispose of waste materials appropriately • Take time to ensure all tools and PPE are picked up. When home, wash all mud and dirt from tools, oil and sharpen where required. PPE should be checked over for damage and stored correctly.
