Niji-‐Iro Japanese Immersion Elementary School にじいろ小学校（日本語イマージョンスクール） Summer is officially over but I hope the nice weather stays for a bit longer. Fall is my favorite time of year. They have been learning a lot of new information. Every Monday we have an all school meeting. We begin our day with announcements, singing, and radio taiso. This policy is a district wide policy and all schools have moved to this. Thank you to everyone for being so observant in the parking lot. I know some have brought up concerns about the students waiting outside. When the weather is inclement students will line up inside. We are also working on additional options for enhanced safety for students. Everyone should have received a menu. Currently, we will just be serving the hot lunch meals. This is where you can load money onto your child’s account to pay for lunches. It works like a credit card. We send food services a list of who ate lunch that day and the money is deducted from your account. If you send your child with cash to pay for lunch please note that no change will be given. The money will be applied to their online account and can be used for future lunch purchases. If your child owes money you will receive a note stating the amount and you can send it in with your child or put money into his/her account online through the parent connect. (Directions on how to use parent connect are on the back of the menu.) Clothing with messages that are obscene, profane or advocate the use of controlled substances may not be worn. We do ask for your support and adherence to the following when assisting your child(ren) in preparing for school. 児童の服装が教育環境にふさわしくなかったり、健康や安全を害すると学校長が判断した場合、 児童は着替えをしなければなりません。学習の場にふさわしくない、わいせつな言葉、汚い言葉 、薬物の使用を連想させるような言葉が書かれている洋服は禁止します。お子さんが朝の準備を している時に、適切なアドバイスをしていただけますよう、お願いします。 Shorts AND skirts should be of an appropriate length. Skirts that are very short and are not appropriate for school activities including P.E., recess and ring on the floor for class discussions are not to be worn. Again, we understand that guidelines such as “fingertip”, “pinky length” are difficult because not everyone has arm and leg length which are in direct proportion to the other. Tanks must be approximately three fingertips in width. For our young gentleman, the tanks with the low, wide armholes are also not appropriate. We have had many injuries during recess. On PE days students should wear rubber soled shoes to be able to play safely in the gym and outside. ビーチサンダルは学校に履いてきてはいけません。休み時間にけがをすることが多くあります。 PE（体育）の授業のある日は運動靴を着用してください。 Homework宿題 Homework is designed to provide needed practice of the application of a skill or concept that has already been taught at school. It is important that the student understands the concept or skill before being required to practice it outside the classroom setting. Work not completed in the course of the day is to be taken home, completed, and returned the next day. 宿題は学校で学習済みの内容や技術を復習するためのもので、児童が学校で学習したことをきち んと理解していることがとても大切です。授業中の課題が終わらなかった場合、自宅に持ち帰っ て終わらせ、次の日に提出します。 If your child is absent for one day, homework will be made-‐up when he/she returns. It is the child’s responsibility to ask about any missed work. If you are requesting homework due to an illness for two or more days, please make your request to the teacher via e-‐mail or phone. Homework that can be sent will be available at the end of the day. It is difficult for teachers to predict where they will be in the subject material when students return. When you return from your trip, your child(ren) should get their missing work from their teacher. They will be given ample time to complete it and the teacher will be able to assist the student if needed. All students should participate in a manner appropriate to their needs and abilities. Parents/guardians may request an exclusion from recess for up to three consecutive days for a given illness or injury. Extension beyond this time requires a physician’s request, including a reference to cause and possible duration. Students must make contact with the adult on duty for any problem, even if a problem occurs on the playground after the bell rings. After my first year of teaching, life took me in a different direction. My husband and I moved to California where I taught in both the traditional elementary schools and at California Virtual Academies, an online school. The California Virtual Academies provided amazing opportunities for me to grow as a leader and innovative thinker. I was the Accreditation Coordinator for our school of 9,000 students (K-‐12) and 400 staff. As Master Teacher of Curriculum and Instruction for grades K-‐12, I also developed a Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment program for online teaching in collaboration with the University of California, San Diego. ミシガン•ミルフォードで教員職を始め、一年後、カリフォルニアに引っ越し、小学校とオンラ インスクール（California Virtual Academies）で教えました。生徒９０００人／教職員４００人規 模の学校でコーディネーター（Accreditation Coordinator）をする傍ら、カリフォルニア大学サン ディエゴ校と共同で、教員養成／教科評価プログラムの開発に携わりました。 After moving back to Michigan, I became the Special Programs Administrator for Ohio Virtual Academy. The Ohio Virtual Academy has 14,000 students and over 500 teachers and support personnel. My responsibilities include the program oversight, training, staff evaluation, and compliancy (K-‐12) of the following: Title One, Truancy, RTI, 504, High School Guidance Counseling, Special Education Transition for High School Students, and monitoring and support of all K-‐12 at risk students. ミシガンに戻り、Ohio Virtual Academyにて特別プログラムの管理役（職務：the program oversight, training, staff evaluation,compliancy (K-‐12)など）を勤めました。 I just completed my contract as the Instructional Lead (Principal over instruction), K-‐2 Teacher, and Middle School Science Teacher for a very small charter school in Livonia and am currently a University Professor. Teaching both in the classroom and online for Madonna University and the University of California, San Diego has allowed me to stay current on research giving me many opportunities to watch teachers grow in their teaching abilities and impact the lives of students. リボニアでの幼稚園〜２年生、中学校の理科教員職などを終え、現在、継続してオンラインコー ス（マドンナ大学／カリフォルニア大学サンディエゴ校）で教鞭を続ける中で、教員育成に関す る研究も行っています。 Yuriko Ishida-‐ Japanese as a Second Language Instructor I teach JSL(Japanese as a Second Language) to the students who do not get significant exposure to Japanese outside of school. I was born and raised in Shimene, Japan for 18 years until I moved to Tokyo to go to college. I graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University majoring in Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language with a teaching certificate. Later I moved to Michigan for my graduate program at Eastern Michigan University where I earned a graduate certificate in Japanese Language Teaching. I have worked in Japanese-‐English dual immersion school for the past two years and taught 1st grade to 3rd grade. This year I will be teaching 1st to 4th grade. I am looking forward to working with you and your student. 石田友里子 JSL教員 私は学校外で日本語に触れる時間の少ない児童に対し、JSLを教えています。出身は島根県です 。東京学芸大学で日本語教育を専攻し、教員免許を取得しました。大学を卒業後渡米し、２０１ ２年にイースタンミシガン大学でGraduate Certificate in Japanese Language Teachingを取得しまし た。２０１２年５月より日英イマ―ジョン学校で働き始め、JSL教員として１年生から３年生の JSL児童の日本語習得をサポートしてきました。2014-‐15年度は１年生から４年生を教えています 。よろしくお願いします。 My name is Sarah Zakem, and I am the 4th grade teacher. I graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in East Asian Languages and Cultures. I lived in Japan for five years as part of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. I worked as an Assistant Language Teacher, teaching English in junior high and elementary schools. After I returned to the U.S.A., I earned a Master of Arts in elementary education along with teacher certification from the University of Michigan. I then worked closely with teachers and students as an English Learner Paraprofessional in Plymouth-‐ Canton Community Schools. I am very excited to be part of the Niji-‐Iro Elementary School community, and look forward to working with you and your child this year! 私は四年生の担任のセラ ゼカムです。ミシガン州立大学で東アジアの文学の学士を取りました 。卒業してから、ジェットプログラム（JET Programme）に参加し、五年間日本に住んでいまし た。ALT（外国語指導助手）として、中学校と小学校で英語を教えていました。帰国してから、 ミシガン大学で初等教育の修士を取りました。昨年はプリマス カントンの小学校でEnglish Learner Paraprofessional （支援員）として、先生達や生徒達と良い関係を築きながら仕事に取り 組んでいました。今年、にじいろ小学校の一員になれて本当にわくわくしています。そして、皆 さんや皆さんの子供さんと一緒に働けるのを楽しみにしています。これからよろしくお願いしま す。 Toshihiko Morita -‐I lived 59 years in Shiga Prefecture. -‐I graduated from Ritsumeikan University. After graduation, I obtained a license for elementary school education through independent study at a university. -‐ I worked in public elementary schools in Shiga Prefecture. -‐My hobby is swimming. -‐Bilingual education, living abroad, etc. is all a new experience for me, so there are many things to learn. Every day is busy, but I am glad to be learning things I didn’t know, and doing things that I couldn’t do before. My mother is Japanese and my father is Korean. I grew up in a bilingual household where my two brothers and I would speak English with each other and my parents, while my mother would talk to us in Japanese. Thus, I understand some Japanese but I am not comfortable speaking it. Prior to teaching Kindergarten at Hinoki International School the last few years, I graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Psychology. I am currently working towards a master’s degree in School Counseling. Then, my family moved to Bolivia. While living there, I attended Japanese School on Saturdays to maintain my first language. During seventh grade, I moved to Troy, MI. In addition to attending Japanese School in Bolivia, my parents also encouraged my siblings and me to speak Japanese only at home and speak Spanish/English outside the home. I have graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Child Development. I completed my student teaching in a first grade classroom in Hazel Park, MI and in a preschool classroom of three-‐year-‐olds in Haslett, MI. This would be my 2nd year teaching at this school. I started my first year of teaching in 2003 as a fifth grade teacher. After that I taught second grade for 3 years. I have substitute taught in grades K-‐8 for several years in Livonia, Plymouth Canton, Northville and Wayne Westland. My education includes a bachelor’s degree in Education from Eastern Michigan University and a master’s degree in Teaching and Learning with a concentration in Early Childhood from Madonna University. I love learning and helping others to grow and learn as well. I have two daughters, Macy and Ava who are also in the Livonia Public Schools. I am the 2nd grade English homeroom teacher for class 2-‐1. I graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Elementary Education and teaching major in Integrative Social Studies. I taught for four years in an International School in China, first and second grade split and fifth grade. I also taught at Hinoki International School for two years teaching 2nd grade. I graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. During the 2009-‐2010 school year I went to Gwangju, South Korea to teach English as a foreign language to 5th and 6th grade students at two elementary schools. Later, I returned to Michigan to attend Wayne State University where I obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching degree with an Elementary Education major and an English as a Second Language (ESL) minor. Since graduating in December 2013 I have worked as a tutor for Huntington Learning Center in Rochester Hills and as an ESL substitute teaching assistant in a charter school in Hamtramck. I came to Michigan after graduating collage in Japan to obtain a master’s degree in communication from Michigan State University. I hold my BA in music with teaching certificate, later moved to the states to pursue my degree in music education. After I completed my first master’s degree in KY, I continued to acquire my second master’s focusing on music education research and its professional development in Michigan. I have a passion for music; performing, listening, making, and teaching! On September 4th will be having a PTA meeting. At this meeting the President of the Livonia PSTA will provide everyone with information about PTAs.
