It is based in the centre of Norwich, UK. セインズベリー日本藝術研究所は、サー・ロバート及びリサ・セイン The mission of the Sainsbury Institute is to promote worldclass research and to be a leader in the study of Japanese arts and cultures from the past to the present. Working with our academic partners and funders, the Institute furthers its mission through: •creating collaborative and active global research networks; and •disseminating the results of our research; while •advancing outreach and educational activities. The Institute continues its close collaboration with institutional partners including the University of East Anglia (UEA), the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS), the British Museum, and other organisations in the UK, Japan and Europe. It maintains a rich programme of research, fellowships, public lectures and international workshops and is also committed to widely disseminating the fruits of its scholarships and research activities through its website www.sainsburyinstitute.org and its e-magazine. My predecessor, Professor Edward Acton, chaired the Management Board from 2009 to 2014, and we thank him for leading the governance of the Institute during those five years. I would also like to thank the other members of the Management Board and the staff of the Institute for all their work, and for the warm welcome that they have given me. For some time I have admired the work of the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures and that of its sister benefactions at UEA – the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. I look forward to helping facilitate the activities that they are able to engage in both together and with other parts of UEA, as well as to continuing to support the fruitful partnerships that the Institute has established with the British Museum, the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and many other museums and academic organisations in Japan, America, the UK and the rest of Europe. It is fifteen years since the late Sir Robert and Lady Lisa Sainsbury set up the endowment fund that enabled the Sainsbury Institute to be founded. The Institute is now a world leader in its field as the events listed in this report clearly demonstrate. Staff and Fellows are engaged in major research projects; the Institute has created many collaborative research networks; it hosts important lecture series; it is engaged in many other outreach and educational activities; and it has built an impressive research library. This, I believe, is a record of success of which Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury would be proud. It is now official that the Sainsbury Institute will move to the University of East Anglia (UEA) campus in 2019, thus strengthening the synergy with our sister benefactions already located there, namely the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. This is indeed what the late Sir Robert and Lady Lisa Sainsbury envisaged when they helped to establish our Institute, and we are happy that this is the legacy bequeathed to Lord Sainsbury of Turville. The move will bolster our academic profile, and will also enable us to work even more closely with the various UEA faculties where Japanese studies has been flourishing since the Centre for Japanese Studies was created in 2011. During the year covered by this annual report, our activities in research, outreach and education have continued to grow from strength to strength. Our network of research partners in the UK, Europe and Japan has expanded: in testament to this, our offices at 64 The Close constantly see new fellows and visiting scholars from around the world who come here to pursue their research and share their work. One of the initiatives of which we are most proud is a new public lecture series, the Ishibashi Foundation Lecture series, which is designed to deliver to audiences in Japan information on how their arts and culture have been received, transformed and continue to be influential in Europe. We have just recently celebrated the one hundred and fiftieth talk in our flagship outreach activity, the Third Thursday Lecture series. We are delighted to see that the Japanese economy is finally picking up, under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. Much needed reforms to meet the many challenges that Japan faces, which include the problems entailed in having an ageing population and a lop-sided dependency on nuclear energy, are being implemented. On the cultural front, the Japanese government recently announced their plans to create a ‘Japan House’ in various major cities of the world, with London designated as one of the first cities to so benefit. The Sainsbury Institute hopes that the new Japan House will serve as a hub that can continue to project the diverse elements of Japan’s rich culture and heritage and thus further strengthen UK-Japanese cultural relations. Uncertainty in world affairs has increased over the past year and no region seems to be immune from upheaval and turbulence. Regardless, it is important that each of us do what we can to make life better and more enjoyable! At the Institute, we intend to keep going forward with our mission to champion Japanese arts and cultures as a common good that we can share with others, always with this purpose uppermost in our minds. Wherever possible her work and research projects are joint ventures with Japanese nationals and European researchers. Professor Rousmaniere is currently working on developing a project on manga and its antecedents, and on shorter-term projects on Japanese contemporary craft, in particular urushi (lacquer), with complementary workshops. She is devoting considerable efforts to fundraising for these projects. Professor Rousmaniere is meanwhile also working on a manuscript of her next book (working title: ‘400 Years of Japanese Porcelain,’) and consulting with Professors Ohashi Koji and Arakawa Masa'aki, both Sotheby Senior Scholars, on a proposal for a related exhibition at the British Museum and other institutions abroad. She continues to work with Despina Zernioti, Director of the Corfu Museum of Asian Art, to support research and display of Japanese works at the Corfu Museum. In December 2013, Professor Rousmaniere and Professor Paul Greenhalgh, the Director of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia, each gave a talk at the first Ishibashi Foundation lecture series in Tokyo. Professor Rousmaniere employed her extensive knowledge of Japanese art and her experience as curator at the British Museum to explain how Japanese objects are perceived and displayed outside Japan, using the British Museum as a case study. 2014 marked the sixtieth anniversary of the Japan Traditional Kogei – Art Crafts – Exhibition, an event that is held annually in Japan and first instituted in 1954. As part of the celebrations a major exhibition took place at the Tokyo National Museum in early 2015, featuring works by all 104 artists and craftsmen who have been given the Japanese government designation of Living National Treasure. In addition to significant research outcomes, his research projects also have great impact in terms of outreach and dissemination. The heritage sector in Japan has proven remarkably adaptable and resilient over the last few years. The archaeological economy, driven for several decades by the need for excavation prior to new development of urban areas, has had to adjust to decreasing budgets and calls for greater engagement with community audiences. This is giving rise to what is becoming known as ‘public archaeology’ – which also happens to be the focus of research for our Academic Associate Dr Matsuda Akira, who is enthusing new generations with an interest in Japanese archaeology and cultural heritage through his courses in the School of Art History and World Art Studies at the University of East Anglia (as of September 2014, this School became the Department of Art History and World Art Studies within the School of Art, Media and American Studies). At the same time, Japanese archaeology and heritage organisations are reaching out to new international audiences. The Sainsbury Institute is well situated to help facilitate this, utilising our extensive networks both within and outside Japan. One major new initiative was the launch by the Japanese Archaeological Association of the Japanese Journal of Archaeology (www.jjarchaeology.jp), an English-language, online, peer-reviewed, open-access journal, co-edited by Simon Kaner with our long-standing research partner Professor Mizoguchi Koji of Kyushu University. We continue to foster our links with Japanese universities in the sector, and in January 2014 we signed an agreement of cooperation with Nara University, a private university with students specialising in the historical disciplines, archaeology, conservation and cultural heritage studies. Two new projects are contributing to enhancing the framework for understanding Japanese archaeology in a broader regional and interdisciplinary context, both drawing on what is known as historical ecology. Historical Ecology in Northeast Asia is a collaboration with the University of Toronto, in particular Professor Gary Crawford, who is renowned for his studies of plant use in ancient Japan, Korea and China. Led by Dr Oliver Craig of the University of York, this project is pioneering new methods in bio-archaeology to analyse ancient food crusts, work that has already led to publications in Nature and elsewhere. また英国においては、英国芸術・人文研究評議会からの財政的支 援を得て、世界最古とされるいくつかの陶器を使って調理された食 べ物を調査するという大規模な新規プロジェクトに参画しています。 このプロジェクトは、ヨーク大学のオリバー・クレイグ博士の下で、 古代調理器に残された食べ物のお焦げを分析するという、生物考古 学の分野における新しい方法を開発しており、その成果は既にネイ チャー誌などに発表されています。 Radiocarbon dating workshop, in collaboration with Chuo University The Centre for Archaeology and Heritage continues with its programme of research workshops in Norwich and London, and promoting Japanese archaeology and cultural heritage at international conferences and meetings, including this year the Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo and the European Association of Archaeologists conference in Pilzen, Czech Republic. In April 2014 the Institute hosted an international meeting on the important question of the new chronologies for early Japan being put forward as the result of extensive radiocarbon dating. This workshop, co-organised with Professor Gina Lee Barnes of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, was part of an ongoing collaboration with SOAS, and also marked the start of a new partnership with Chuo University in Tokyo. On the local scene, 64 The Close was opened for public tours as part of Heritage Open Days, and Dr Kaner contributed to the biannual Norwich Dragon festival with a talk on Dragons in Japanese Art and Archaeology. The reassessment of the William Gowland Collection of archaeological materials from the kofun period (third–eighth centuries AD) continues at the British Museum. Interim results were presented at a symposium co-organised with the Japanese Section, Department of Asia at the British Museum and the Art Research Centre of Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, on Museums in the Digital Age. Ryan is now an Academic Associate of the Sainsbury Institute and he is currently collaborating with Breakdown Press in London on publishing seminal historical manga in English translation. As a freelance art historian and critic Ryan is a frequent contributor to The Comics Journal, Artforum International, and Art in America. His previous research concerned Edo-period foreign relations and was published in journal articles and book chapters, as well as in a monograph, Defining Engagement: Japan and Global Contexts, 1640–1868 (Harvard University Asia Center, 2009). He has also published on the socio-economic integration of the Pacific Ocean in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Robert is currently writing a transnational history of Japan’s export of green tea to the United States from circa 1850 to 1950, a project for which he has received Smithsonian, Japan Foundation, and National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships. Its collections include general introductory works and key reference materials in English and Japanese. Its study collections support research by staff and students in Japanese applied arts and ceramics, archaeology, material culture and trade, cultural heritage and architecture, as well as East Asian cultural history, archaeology and art history. These collections rank among the best in Europe in their fields, and they complement other existing Japanese collections in the UK. The Library catalogue is fully accessible online through the Institute’s website, as is the database of high-resolution images of the Cortazzi Collection of early Japanese maps and ukiyo-e, created in conjunction with the Art Research Center at Ritsumeikan University. Our Librarian, Hirano Akira, is actively engaged in networking with libraries related to Japanese studies throughout the UK and Europe and is also Honorary Librarian of the Japanese Section, Department of Asia at the British Museum. It is an independent charity affiliated to the University of East Anglia (UEA). The funding of the Institute is governed by a Trust Deed that provides for the appointment of Trustees and a Management Board. The Trustees have the responsibility for investing the original Trust Fund and applying the income to support the costs of running of the Institute in accordance with the provisions of the Trust Deed. The Management Board acts as the governing body of the Institute, agreeing the nature of its activities and approving its budget and staffing. The Institute raises funds from other sources to support workshops, publications, lectures, fellowships and other projects. It also receives non-financial donations, especially library materials and other support in kind. The Institute is expected to manage its activities within the grants and other income available to it and, during its first decade, was encouraged to deploy the funds available each year and not to build a financial reserve. Although the Institute’s income from its endowment and from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation will continue to be used primarily for funding current activity, the decision by the Foundation to spend out its capital in the medium term and eventually to bring its annual grant funding to an end, requires the Institute to develop plans to replace that core funding.
