Almost 300,000 people lost their homes in the earthquake.
ほぼ３０万人の人がその地震で家を失った。
Many pets also became homeless.
多くのペットもホームレスになった。
Many of these pets had injuries.
これらのペットの多くが傷ついた。
Dr. Hataya remembers it vividly.
旗谷先生は鮮明にそれを覚えている。
A woman weas walking her dog on a cold morning without any shoes.
ある女性は寒い朝に靴を履かずに犬の散歩をしていた。
A man was sharing a blanket with his dog.
ある男性は犬と毛布を分け合っていた。
Both the woman and the man were thinking, "With this pet I can live."
その女性と男性はどちらもこのペットとなら生きられるると思っていた。
At the time, Dr. Hataya thought, "I have to do something.
その時、旗谷先生は何かしなくてはいけないと思った。
Pets also need homes."
ペットも家が必要だ。

Dr. Hataya was a vet and worked hard in Kobe.
旗谷先生は獣医であり、神戸で懸命に働いた。
Ms. Matsuda helped him, and they started doing animal relief activities.
松田さんは彼を手伝っていた。そして、彼らは動物の救助活動を始めた。
They borrowed land from the city of Kobe, and made a shelter for
homeless pets with other volunteers.
彼らは神戸市から土地を借りて、他のボランティアたちと家のないペットのために避難所を作った。
Dr. Hataya had many calls from pet owners.
旗谷先生はぺットの買主から多くの電話を受けた。
They asked,"Could you keep our dog for us ?"
彼らは「自分たちの代わりに預かってくれませんか？」とたずねた。
There were about 1,500 dogs in all.
全部で約1500匹の犬がいました。
"These pets need their own homes,"Dr. Hataya thought.
「これらのペットは彼ら自身の家が必要だ」と旗谷先生は思った。
"We have to find new owners to help these dogs."
我々はこれらの犬を救うために新しい飼い主を見つけなければならない」
Can adult dogs become happy with new owners ?
大人の犬は新しい飼い主の下で幸せになれるだろうか？
This question remained.

Ten years later, in 2005, Dr. Hataya and Ms. Matsuda attended an
international conference on animal care.
１０年後の2005年、旗谷先生は松田さんと共に動物の世話に関する国際会議に出席した。
They looked back at their animal relief efforts.
彼らは自分たちの動物救助活動を振り返った。
They found through their activities that adult dogs could become
good members of new families.
彼らは活動を通して大人の犬でも新しい家族の良い一員になれることが分かった。
People in Kobe learned the imporance of animal and human relations
through the earthquake: people help animals, and animals also help people.
神戸の人々は地震を通して動物と人の関係の重要性を学んだ。
すなわち、人は動物を助け、動物もまた人を助ける。
To help animals is to help people.
動物を助けることは人を助けることである。
Dr.Hataya is still helping people and animals in Kobe with Ms.
Matsuda today.
