はしがき
洋楽は好きだが英語の勉強は嫌い、という話をよく耳にします。英語の歌の楽しさとは
裏腹に、英語学習には暗記がつきもので、膨大な量に及ぶ単語や文法事項の暗記には、大
学生のみならず筆者たちも苦しめられてきました。英米のポップスは英語の授業をする上
で格好のオーセンティックな教材になりうるものではありますが、教育的な意味を持たせ
ることが難しいせいか、英米のポップスを題材にしたテキストは数えるほどしか存在しま
せん。本書はこうした大学英語教育のニーズに応えることを念頭において作られた野心的
なテキストで、英米の音楽界に君臨したアーティストを題材に TOEIC ® テストに備えるこ
とを目標としています。
現在、日本は空前の TOEIC ブームです。毎年 TOEIC 対策本が出版され、就職や昇進の
際にも、そのスコアが選考の対象となります。大学でもこの風潮を見逃すことができなく
なり、資格試験のための指導をカリキュラム内に組み込まざるをえなくなってきています。
幸い TOEIC ® テストには特有な問題形式があり、この形式に慣れるだけで解答はかなり容
易になります。しかし、資格試験の勉強は、基本的に点数を取るための勉強で、ともする
と勉強が単調になり、学ぶ楽しみや実用性にすら欠けることがあります。また、TOEIC ® テストは他の英語資格試験とは異なり、その内容がビジネスに特化しているという特徴を
持っております。大学生が受験を検討する際に、ビジネス関連の語彙の克服が求められま
す。しかし、経済学や経営学を専攻している学生ならともかく、他の専門領域を専攻して
いる学生には、そのハードルは想像以上の高さがあります。
このような問題を解決するために、『ポップ・ミュージック・ワールド』は開発されまし
た。TOEIC ® テスト形式を保ち、つまり TOEIC ® テストの問題形式に慣れてスコアを上げ
ることを目指しつつ、英語圏の音楽で学習の動機づけをし、さらに英語圏の音楽シーンの
知識を身につけるという一石二鳥の教材開発を目指しました。このテキストを使用した皆
さんが、楽しみながら英語を学習してくださることを願っています。

This Is It
“This Is it,” Michael Jackson told his fans in London, as he announced his latest
comeback tour. “This is the final curtain call.” As we all know, sadly the curtain fell on
Jackson’s life sooner than expected. But we are still left with the legacy of this remarkable documentary film. Michael may have been sick, but the film shows a man full of
life and musical courage.
The film is made up of rehearsal footage from April through June 2009 for a concert tour that was planned to begin in the summer. The high definition footage and
stereo full-range soundtrack give us one of the most extraordinary and candid music
documentaries you will ever see.
The film reveals Michael as an industrious, soft-spoken man, courteous to cast and
crew at all times. He is endlessly patient and never shows any signs of anger as he
manages the show. Yet he is in control of the whole production, correcting timing,
perfecting cues, discussing intricate details of music, dance and lighting. At times he
is like a great filmmaker.
It would have been quite a show. Unfortunately, even though the show was
ready to go, it is a show that will never happen. There is a moving scene in the film in
which Michael joins hands in a circle with cast and crew to thank them for all their
hard work. It is sad to think that the show they worked so hard on will never happen
and that now Michael is lost to us forever. But we do have one more chance to see Michael on film. This Is It.
