All members of EJCA are invited to attend the 2015 EJCA
Annual General Meeting. This year, it is a dinner party!
Please come out and meet the members, enjoy
exhibitions and presentations by EJCA clubs and
committees. This will be a wonderful opportunity to know
more about EJCA and about Japanese culture.
会員の皆様を 2015 年度 EJCA 年次総会にご招待します。夕食会と
各クラブやコミティの活動を紹介する展示や演技を行います。日頃お
目にかかるとこの少ない会員に会って夕食を共にし、楽しく親睦を深

Non-food Sales Items: New or lightly-used items to sell at the general sales tables are welcome. Japanese items are
especially popular. Please bring donations to ECJA and fill out a donation form available on the side of the
“Take Away Bookshelf”, outside the office. Contact Cathy Tennant ([email protected] or 780-436-6291) for
questions or pick-up.
Silent Auction Items: Please note on the form, if you wish a donation to be considered for the Silent Auction. These
items can be brought to EJCA or picked up, as noted above. The planning committee will make a final decision
about the items to be auctioned.
Bake Sale Items: Donations of bake sale items can be brought to EJCA on the day of the bazaar (October 24)
before 11:00 a.m. Please remember to put your name on the Bake Sale Donation list which will be available
on that day so we can acknowledge your participation in the bazaar.
Table rentals:
We will have a few tables again this year for personal sales. The table will be rented on a first come first served basis

EJCA の日本語の名前が決まりました!
エドモントン日本文化協会
いままで EJCA の日本語名は英語そのままのカタカナを使うか又は慣習として「エドモン
トン日系人会」を使っていました。現在 EJCA 会員の半数以上が日系人でないカナダ人
や日本人であり、会の主な活動が“日系人”間の親睦というよりは会員の間で日本文化を
共有したり、カナダ社会に向けて日本文化を紹介していることを考慮し、役員会では、「日
本文化」を入れて、「エドモントン日本文化協会」と決めました。10 月 18 日の年次総会で
も報告します。英語名は Bylaws で決められており、変更はありません。

Heritage Festival 2015

The 40 Anniversary of the Edmonton Heritage Festival
went very smoothly. With our accumulated experience and
136 registered volunteers, the Japanese Pavilion
showcased food, cultural displays, and demonstrations. Of
course, the always popular Photo Booth was in full swing,
with dedicated staff to help the public dress in yukata and
receive a photograph. Saturday morning was a bit showery,
so morning attendance was low, but the rest of the
weekend saw good crowds enjoying the festival.
The community spirit was evident, with Japanese citizens,
Canadians of Japanese descent, and other Canadians
with an interest in Japanese culture all working together
through the three days, and evenings. And don’t foget the
volunteers who made crafts and prepared the sales items
in the weeks before the Festival.
The Pavilion’s operations went smoothly, with no
accidents or injuries. Sales were good. EJCA gave away
40 pairs of decorated hashi each day as a gift in
recognition of our 40 years of attendance at the festival.
The Japanese Pavilion also received a Festival Founder
plaque in recognition that EJCA was one of the original
11 cultural groups that participated in the first Heritage
Festival.
２０１５年ヘリテージ祭り

今年もＥＪＣＡはエドモントンのヘリテージ祭りに参加しました。今年
はヘリテージ祭りと最初から参加しているＥＪＣＡにとって４０周年の
記念すべきフェスティバルでした。そして４０年の経験を活用し１３６
人のボランティアが食べ物、文化関係の展示即売、いろいろなグル
ープの実演を実に手際よくこなしました。浴衣を着て写真を写すコー
ナーも例年のように人で一杯でした。土曜の朝、少しにわか雨があ
った他は天気にも恵まれました。
日本パビリオンは日本から来た日本人、日系人、日本文化に興味を
持つカナダ人が一体となって運営しています。当日パビリオンで働
いたボランティアの他にも工芸などを前もって作くって用意したボラ
ンティアがたくさんいます。日本パビリオンは事故もけがもなくスムー
スに運営できました。食べ物も工芸品も良く売れました。ことしは４０
周年を記念して、毎日４０組のきれいな模様の箸を来館者に無料で
あげました。ＥＪＣＡは４０年前の第一回フェスティバルの１１の創立
メンバーの一つとして記念の飾り板を貰いました。まだ最終の数字
は出ていませんが、今年の純益（売り上げから材料費を引いたもの、
ボランティアの時間は計算に入れない）が１５、０００ドルと今までの
最高になりそうです。大きな純益はもちろんうれしいですが、多くの
人がボランティアとして一緒に楽しく過ごせたことが、なんといっても
このフェスティバルの最高の収穫でしょう。

It appears that a record profit was made, over $15,000.
More important perhaps is the good will and co-operation
that makes this an enjoyable event.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Edmonton and area has enjoyed a sunny and pleasant,
mosquito-free summer (although the few that were
around managed to find me). Benefiting from this
favourable weather have been the many outdoor festivals
and events (the Edmonton Triathalon and Tour of Alberta
may disagree) we have come to enjoy. However, the
downside to the warm weather has been the serious lack
of rain for parts of Alberta and beyond with agricultural
disasters proclaimed, many thousands of hectares and
hundreds of homes and businesses lost to fire, and
unfortunately some loss of life.
The weather can be an issue for outdoor events and one
that is beyond our control. Each year the 3 day Heritage
Festival depends upon favourable weather to attract the
thousands of festival-goers to ultimately make it a
success for the 70 cultural groups on display. This year,
EJCA received the 40 Years Founder’s Award for being
one of the original 11 cultural groups who continue to
participate in this annual event. This is a huge
accomplishment and one that we, as a not-for-profit,
volunteer-driven organization, should celebrate! It
demonstrates our collective goal and desire to share our
Japanese culture, and it is a testimony of the dedication
and commitment of the thousands of volunteers it has
taken to make EJCA’s involvement such a success over
the past 40 years!

On August 15 , thirty EJCA members went to Calgary by
a bus and private cars to attend the one day Calgary
th
Japanese Community Association’s 5 Annual Omatsuri
Festival. The weather gods were angry the evening
before and traveling down to Calgary that morning it
continued to rain most of the way there. Upon arrival at
11am, it was overcast, with dark clouds threatening to
drop their moisture. For the start of the festival, most of
the outdoor events had to be postponed or re-located to
the indoor hall. The organizers did a great job
accommodating all of the performances, including an
ikebana floral demonstration, kimono dressing, a koto
performance, an anime presentation, a shamisen
performance and the arts and craft of the Japanese
sword. All food vendors had to be indoors as well so it
was very crowded.
There were also vendors selling traditional Japanese
souvenirs, craft items, a photo booth for dressing in
kimono, Japanese tea and a variety of packaged foods.
Fortunately, the rain held off, and after a couple of hours
the food vendors sold their delicious items outdoors, the
Japanese Sword Making Sensei gave blacksmithing
demonstrations, and the saki and beer tent was opened.
The outdoor stage was opened to a variety of martial arts
demonstrations, a variety of dance groups, some singers,
the kimono contest, the Lethbridge and Calgary taiko
drummers’ traditional performances, and the Omikoshi

今年のエドモントンの夏は天気が良く、その上なんいっても蚊がほと
んどいなくて快適でしたね。おかげでエドモントンの夏の行事はどれ
も盛会でした。この晴天続きの夏も良いことばかりではありませんで
した。雨量が極端にすくなく、アルバータと近隣の州の農業は大きな
被害を被りました。また山火事が多数発生して家や店舗を失った人
も大勢いました。
夏の催しは天気に大きく左右されます。８月１，２，３日のヘリテー
ジ・フェスティバルは天気に恵まれ、ホーリロック公園は７０のグルー
プのテントからテントへ移動するのが大変なほどの人出でした。今年
は EJCA がこのフェスティバルに１１の創立メンバーの一つとして参
加してから４０年になり、「４０周年記念創立者賞」をもらいました。わ
れわれ EJCA が非営利ボランティア団体であることを考えると、４０
年もの間、多くのボランティアを必要とするこのフェスティバルに参加
出来てきたことは、「エドモントンの人達に日本文化を伝えたい」とい
う我々の熱意がいかに大きかったかという証明です。
８月１５日に３０人ほどの EJCA の会員がバスと自分の車でカルガリ
ーに行き、カルガリー日本人コミュニティー協会主催の第五回「お祭
りフェスティバル」に参加しました。あいにく前日から天気が悪く、カ
ルガリーに行くハイウェイはどしゃ降りでした。お祭りがどうなるのか
心配しましたが、１１時にお祭りの開かれる公園に到着したときは雨
は止みましたが、どんよりした曇り空でまた今にも雨になりそうです。
祭りの主催者は急遽戸外に設置した食べ物の売店を屋内に移しま
した。そのため大きなコミュニティーホールは売店と人で一杯になり、
歩くのも大変な位に混み合いました。しかし、主催者の宣伝がよく行
き届いていたので、天気が悪いのにもかかわらず、たくさんの人が
祭りの訪れました。生け花、着物、琴、アニメなどいろいろな企画が
ありましたが、屋外で予定のものも屋内に移して実行しました。天気
が悪く、大きな公園で屋外に予定されていたものが実行できません
でしたが、主催者が悪天候の時の予定変更を良く準備していたこと
に感銘を受けました。
お祭りでは日本の工芸品の即売、着物を着ての写真撮影などの用
意してありました。午後１時過ぎには雨の心配もなくなり、公園が使
えるようになりました。日本の包丁を鍛冶屋が打つ実演が珍しいで
した。またビールと日本酒が飲めるテントもオープンしました。武術、
舞踊、太鼓などの公演も戸外で始まりました。われわれは午後４時
頃帰途につきましたが、この時間にもまだ新しい客が到着していまし
た。
世界中の日系コミュニティーで「お祭り」をするところが増えています。
世界で一番日系人の多い米国では各地にお祭りがあります。私と
妻はフェニックスで三日間開かれるお祭りに何度も行ったことがあり
ます。このお祭りで売られている工芸品、手芸品の質の高さに驚き
ました。この祭りでも太鼓の公演、日本食の売店、盆栽の展示など
がありましたが、もっとも私たちの注目を引いたのは何百人もの若
い人達が手作りのアニメのコスプレで参加していたことです。EJCA
が主催してエドモントンで「お祭り」を行うというアイディアは如何でし
ょうか？あなたの反応、意見、アイディアを私までお寄せください

カナダ日系人協会年次総会
カナダ日系人協会（NAJC）年次総会が９月２５日（夕方に登録だけ）、
２６日（１日中）、２７日（午前だけ）にビクトリアで開かれます。NAJC

When our group left at 4:00 pm, there were still people
lined up at the entrance.
Matsuri is celebrated around the world. Brazil, with the

2 largest Nikkei population in the world, hosts matsuri in
both Sao Paulo and Curitiba. The USA, which hosts the

3 largest Nikkei population in the world, has matsuri in
Los Angeles and Phoenix as well as several other cities.
Diane and I have attended the 3-day Phoenix Omatsuri
Festival several times and are amazed by the quality of
hand-made artisan crafts being sold (jewelry, pottery,
artwork, paper) ,the many food vendors offering a variety
of Japanese fare, the dozens of decades-old bonsai trees,
on display, the variety of performances on 3 separate
stages, including odori dancing and several taiko
drumming groups. The most noticeable presence,
however, were the hundreds of young teens/adults
dressed in their favourite, many hand-made, anime or
cosplay costumes. The most predictable thing has been
the favourable southern weather.

EJCA は NAJC の会員です。今年の年次総会には私と大木早苗が
参加します。各地の日系コミュニティー組織とプログラムやイベント
の情報交換が出来る良い機会なので参加を楽しみにしています。

NAJC 2015 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The National Association of Japanese Canadians (NAJC)
will be held the weekend of September 25-27, 2015 in
Victoria, BC.
The Mission of the NAJC is “to promote and develop a
strong Japanese Canadian identity and thereby to
strengthen local communities and the national
organization; and to strive for equal rights and liberties for
all persons-in particular, the rights of racial and ethnic
minorities.”
As a full member organization of NAJC, EJCA will be
represented at the 2015 NAJC AGM by board members
David Mitsui, President and Sanae Ohki, Vice President.
This is the annual opportunity for EJCA to share its
programs, events, priorities and challenges, and to learn
from others from across Canada.
EJCA New Event: TUESDAY GET TOGETHER
新企画：火曜日のつどい
All members are welcome to our new event “Tuesday
Konnichiwa”. It is a very informal drop-in time inviting
EJCA members and friends.Tea and snacks will be
served. According to your interests, you can chat in
English or Japanese with members, watch a DVD,
borrow books, play games,share crafts, etc. Any creative
way of meeting people and having fun is welcome!
毎週火曜日の午後、EJCA (新しい日本語名：エドモントン日本文化
協会)では、会員の誰でもが自由に参加できる「集い」の時間を作り
ました。今までも図書の整理をしたり、DVD を見たりする会員が集ま
っていましたが、これからは広く皆様に来ていただけるように茶菓の
用意もします。一緒に英語や日本語でお話をしたり、映画を見たり、
図書の本を借りたり、ゲームをしたり、手芸をしたり、ご一緒に楽しめ
ることは何でも出来ます。是非ご参加ください。

The EJCA has an exciting opportunity for you. Yes, you –
the person reading this sentence. We are looking to
expand our board to a full 13 directors from the EJCA
membership. For the small sacrifice of a Tuesday
evening once a month, you get the opportunity to help
guide the evolution of the EJCA going forward.

ＥＪＣＡでは新役員を募集しています。あなたの人生が変わります。
絶対に後悔することはありません。ＥＪＣＡの仕事を他の人に任せっ
きりにしないでください。今この「もしもし」を読んでいらっしゃるあな
たに役員会に入って欲しいのです。役員会役員の数を会則で決めら
れた上限の１３名まで増やしたいのです。毎月一回、火曜日の夜の
役員会に出席するだけです。これだけでＥＪＣＡの将来の発展にあな
たの考えを反映できるようになるのです。
As you have been recognizing the changes, we have
been adding more events and improving the quality of
traditional events. The Board wishes more members to
access Japanese culture and to socialize with members.
Also, we are promoting our culture to the people in
Edmonton. To do these activities, more board members
are required.
Benefits of joining the board include gaining the first hand
experience on the board structure and governance, and
access to development opportunities including workshops,
conferences and more.
Not only will board experience look good on your resume,
but anecdotal evidence suggests that joining the EJCA
board will make you look younger, thinner, and cause
birds to sing whenever you are nearby (note: results are
not typical). Side effects include being more informed
about the activities of the EJCA and more involved in the
community.
We are interested in people of most ages (18 is the
minimum age) and all backgrounds (provided you have
been a member in good standing for at least two years).
The board is particularly interested in getting more
representation from some of the younger families that
make up our membership.

きっと感じていらっしゃると思うのですが、ここ数年 EJCA では年間
の行事を増やしたり、既存の行事の質を向上しています。より多くの
会員が日本文化を知り、楽しみ、交流を図るように、そして日本文化
をエドモントンの人々に知ってもらう努力をしています。そのためによ
り多くの役員が必要です。
役員会役員になると、良いことがたくさんあります。役員会組織と活
動管理を理解するようになります。ワークショップや会議に役員とし
て出席して経験を積み、社会生活に役立つ組織人としての能力を高
めることができます。もちろんこれらの経験は履歴書にしっかりと書
き込んで就職活動に役立ててください。
役員になるといろいろと予期せぬことも起こります（これは私の経験
に基づいいます）。例えば、若く見えるようになります、体型がスマー
トになります、小鳥がさえずってくれるようになります。そして何よりも
私達のコミュニティーのことを広く、深く理解するようになります。
役員会では１８才以上（会則です）の男女でいろいろな経験を持った
人達を探しています（堅実で、今まで２年間しっかりと会費を払って、
ＥＪＣＡの活動に参加している人が会則による役員の条件です、英
語で a member in good standing と言います）。特に若い家庭
を代表する人が役員になって欲しいです。役員になることについて

On September 12 , EJCA hosted a brand new event, the
Makizushi Roll-Out Competition. Kita no Taiko challenged
Kita Kaze Budo Association to a three round makizushi
making contest, and all the guests in attendance were the
judges!
Both teams created their own menus and prepared each
roll themselves. They worked very hard to not only set up
the event and clean up afterwards, but to create tasty food,
fun atmosphere and give the guests a wonderful
experience.
In the end, the voting was very close! 65 votes for Kita no
Taiko, and 67 for Kita Kaze Budo Association.
Congratulations to our winner!
We hope to see you back next time to see who the new
challenger will be!

Tasty, Unique and Enjoyable Sushi Contest

I was a little hesitant to attend the Sushi roll contest. The
image of the Kita no Taiko and Budo clubs is a group of
muscle men and women. What happens to sushi when
they roll sushi with their power, that was my concern. I
entered the hall at 6:10 pm, seven round tables were
almost full. I heard that there would be 44 guests.
A divider separated the work areas of two teams so that
each team could not peak into the other team. Several
tables were set for each team. Kitakaze Budo team
members wore a black uniform with a matching bandana.
Kita no Taiko wore a blue happi-coat. Servers were in
beautiful Yukata and looked so elegant. That was quite a
change from my images of muscular Taiko and Budo
women. In front of the team tables, there were already
some plates with two pieces of sushi. They looked great!
Chefs were still rolling sushi…they had to make sushi for
44 guests! “GANBARE! I will enjoy nice sake while waiting
for sushi”. Finally, the “round 1” sushi arrived. The plate on

おいしくて、ユニークで、楽しい寿司コンテスト！食いしん坊
実のところ私は巻き寿司コンテストに参加するのをためらっていました。
太鼓クラブと武道クラブと言えばまず思うのが、力強さ。その力でお寿
司を巻いたら、、、というイメージが邪魔しました。ちょっと遅れて６時
１０分に会場に入ると、７つの丸いテーブルは殆ど満席。今日の参加
者は４４人だと聞きました。
会場は舞台の位置にスクリーンが立ててあり、両チームがお互いに見
えないように区切られています。このスクリーンの両側に対称形にテ
ーブルが並び、北風武道チームは黒のユニフォームにお揃いのバン
ダナ、北の太鼓チームはＥＪＣＡの青いはっぴ姿。サービス係の方は
浴衣姿で、これが太鼓と武道のメンバーかしらと疑うようなしとやかさ
です。両チームのテーブルの前にはすでに、細巻きのお寿司が２個ず
つお皿に並び始めています。とてもおいしそうに見えます。テーブルで
は、まだ一生懸命巻いている様子。何しろ、４４人分作らなければなら
ないのですから。がんばれ！私達は高級そうな日本酒を頂きながら待
ちましょう。
待ち疲れた頃、やっと、一皿目が配られました。右に置かれた皿が青
の北の太鼓のお寿司、左の皿が赤の北風武道のお寿司。興味深々、

my right side was the “blue” Taiko sushi, and the left side
plate was the “red” Budo sushi. Very nicely presented! I
was pretty hungry and finished them quickly. After I
finished eating, I was told that I had to vote one chip into
either the “blue” bottle or “red” bottle at the centre of our
table. I wished I had known the voting process in
advance! I guessed that the sushi on the blue plate had
Umeboshi paste inside and the sushi on the red plate
had tuna. The rice in one of them was a little too soft.
Something to do with the sushi rolling technique? My
impression for the first round was that both teams did
pretty well, exceeding my expectation.
The second round of sushi did not come for a while. I
finished my sake and talked enough with the people at
my table. I decided to watch how they were making sushi.
Wow, the blue Taiko team was rolling sushi rice with a
strip of steak with goat cheese, asparagus, and
something brown. The red Budo team was using a thinly
sliced piece of avocado, not Nori, for rolling sushi and
Unagi inside! Nowadays, Unagi is very expensive. The
way they sliced and laid avocado on a rolling sheet was
like a professional chef. At 7:30 pm, the second round
sushi finally arrived.
This time, I carefully looked at the presentation, shape,
and ate them slowly. They were all wonderful!
After another 45 minutes of waiting, the third round sushi
was delivered. The blue Taiko plate was decorated with
chocolate and I saw a piece of red strawberry inside. I
knew “strawberry daifuku” but this was the first time to
taste strawberry sushi. What was on the red Budo plate?
Wow, it was a beautiful piece of square sushi. Nori, pink
rice and yellow egg roll created a wonderful color
combination. I wondered if these were really made by
Budo club members. Now, I had to vote for one of the
teams. Both were so good, and I wished both teams to
win. So, I voted the third chip to the team with a less
number of chips in the bottle.
My concern was not necessary. Everyone thought both
teams were good. They were almost tied at 65 chips
against 67 chips.
I will strongly recommend you to join the event in the
future. However, I wonder if there are 100 guests, how
long do I would have to wait for each round of sushi?

でもお腹がすいていてあっという間に食べてしましました。食べてしま
ってから、どっちがよかったかを決めて青か赤のビンにチップを入れ
ないといけないといわれました。あー困った、食べる前に知っておけ
ばよかった! 確か青は梅肉、赤はツナだったな、巻き方はどうだった
かな、ご飯がちょっと軟らかかったのはどっちだったかな、えいっと清
き１票を投票。どちらもなかなかやるなというのが第１ラウンドの感
想です。
又お酒を飲みテーブルのお仲間と話しをしていましたが、次の寿司
がなかなか出てきません。では巻き方を見てこようとテーブルの近く
まで行き、必死に巻いている様子を見ることにしました。えーっ、青
チームはステーキにゴートチーズをぬってアスパラガスと一緒にな
にやら茶色っぽいものをパラパラとかけて巻いています。この取り合
わせはすごいな。ではお隣の赤チームはと見ると、こちらはアボカド
巻き、それに中にはウナギ! 今時ウナギは貴重品ですよ。又々すご
いな、それにアボカドの薄切りがきれいに並んでいるのは玄人肌。７
時３０分になってやっと第２ラウンドのお皿が配られました。今度はし
っかり投票できるように、形、プレゼンテーション、味をゆっくりと見て
食べました。
そして又待つこと４５分、お仲間との話にも飽きて、あっちのテーブル、
こっちのテーブルの知人を訪ねているうちに、第３ラウンド始まり。青
はお皿にチョコレートがぬってあり、苺の赤が見えるデザート風お寿
司。苺大福があるけど、苺寿司もありなんだなと、ひたすら感心。赤
は、まあびっくり、きれいな四角のお寿司。始めにピンクのご飯とキ
ュウリとで２重丸の海苔巻きを作ってそれを四つ切りにして、今度は
中心に卵焼きを入れて四角く巻いてあるのです。そのすばらしいこと。
これって本当にＥＪＣＡの会員が作ったのかしら、と疑うほど。さて、
今度も投票しないといけません。どうするか？今までの出来映えを
考えると絶対両チームを勝たせたい。では、どうしよう？テーブルの
上の赤と青のビンを見て、少ない方に入れることにしました。
皆さん、両方勝たせたかったのですね、得点が６５対６７とほぼ同点
だったのは本当にその通りにおもっていたのでしょう。今回の巻き寿
司大会に参加しなかった皆さん、来年は是非参加をお進めします。
（でも１００人も参加したら、どんなに長く待たなきゃならないのかな、
一晩で終わるのかな、という心配もあります。）
今年も残り少なくなりました、次の行事があります。

My parents were born and raised in Hammond (in the
Maple Ridge area), British Columbia. Along with over
2,000 other Japanese, they chose to come to the sugar
beet fields in southern Alberta so that the family could
stay together on Smith Farm (other Japanese families on
Smith Farm included the Matsune family) during the
evacuation of Japanese-Canadians from the B.C coast.
When my family was still on Smith Farm, I was born in
Lethbridge, Alberta in 1943 at Saint Michael’s Hospital. I
don’t remember anything about our stay on the farm,
only from photos.
After the war ended in 1945, the family moved to a farm
near Taber, but after 6 months decided farming was not
for them, so we moved to Coaldale, a town 10 miles east
of Lethbridge on Highway #3 in 1946. That was where I
grew up and lived until I left home to go to the University
of Alberta in Edmonton in 1963.
I grew up in Coaldale playing baseball, hockey, basketball,
golf and curling, and going to school in my spare time.
When I started Grade 1, I only spoke Japanese because I
was brought up by my maternal grandmother while my
mother went to work. My Grade 1 teacher was Sophie Ito
who married one of the Iwabuchi brothers and now lives in
Edmonton. And my Grade 2 teacher was Diane Nagata,
now Diane Nawata, Aki Nawata’s wife. After 12 years of
school in Coaldale, I graduated from high school in 1962,
more than 50 years ago. My brothers Ken and Allan and
sister Joy were all born in Coaldale and lived there until
they finished high school.
After taking my first year of university in Lethbridge, I
came to Edmonton in the fall of 1963. I had never been
to Edmonton before I came up in August of that year to
look for a place to live. Edmonton in those days had very
few high rise buildings and the tallest building on campus
was the newly built Education Building. The University of
Alberta had a student population of about six thousand,
compared to more than thirty-five thousand now.
I lived in Edmonton from the fall of 1963 to September
1971, and during that time the following took place:
- Attended the University of Alberta for 8 years and
received 2 degrees in1966 & 1971 in chemistry.
- Married Yumiko in 1969 after our first meeting in the
chemistry department in late 1964.- First trip to Japan in
July 1971: Hokkaido, Tokyo and Kyoto
In September 1971, we went to California for a little over
2 years on a postdoctoral fellowship from the National
Research Council of Canada. I was at Stanford
University which is about 30 miles south of San
Francisco on the peninsula. So for two years we never
saw any snow. We lived in the city of Mountain View
before computers and the internet became common

私の両親はブリティッシュ・コロンビア州のハモンド（現在のメープル
リッジのあたりです）で生まれ、育ちました。太平洋戦争中にブリティ
ッシュ・コロンビアでは日系人が海岸線地域から内陸に強制退去さ
せられた時に、両親は他の日系人２０００人余りと一緒に南アルバ
ータの甘藷農家で働くことにしました。両親が入った甘藷農家はスミ
ス農場です。ここにはマツネ一家もいました。
私はまだ両親がスミス農場にいた１９４３年にレスブリッジのセイン
ト・マイケル病院で生まれました。私はこの農場のことは全く覚えて
いません。ただ写真を持っているだけです。１９４５年終戦の年に私
たち一家はテーバー近くの農場に移りました。しかし六ヶ月後に、農
業は一家に向いていないと決断して、１９４６年にコールデールに移
りました。コールデールはレスブリッジから東に１０マイルの所にあり、
ハイウェイ３号線が通っています。１９６３年にアルバータ大学に入
るためにエドモントンに移るまで、わたしはこの町で育ちました。
コールデールでは、野球、アイスホッケー、バスケットボール、ゴル
フ、カーリング、などで毎日大変忙しく、この間、学校にも通っていま
した。私は小学一年で学校に行くまで、日本語しか話せませんでし
た。母は仕事で忙しく、私は主に母方の祖母に育てられていたから
です。小学一年の時に先生はソフィー・イトー（後にイワブチ兄弟の
一人と結婚しました。現在、エドモントンに住んでいます）でした。そ
して小学二年の先生はダイアン・ナガタ（現在ミセス・アキ・ナワタで
す）でした。私は１９６２年にコールデールで高校を卒業しました。思
えばもう５０年以上も前のことです。私の弟、ケンとアラン、妹ジョイ
も皆コールデールで生まれ、高校卒業まで住んでいました。
私は大学の最初の一年をレスブリッジ大学で過ごしてから、１９６３
年にエドモントンのアルバータ大学に入りました。それまでエドモント
ンに来たことはありませんでした。この年の８月に先ずは住むところ
を見つけるためにエドモントンに来ました。当時のエドモントンには
髙いビルは少なく、大学では建設が終わったばかりの教育学部のビ
ルが一番高かったのです。大学の学生数も六千人あまりで、現在の
三万五千人に比べると雲泥の差です。
私はエドモントンに１９６３年の秋から１９７１年の９月までいました。
この間に私がしたことは（１）アルバータ大学に８年間通い、化学の
学位を二つ取る、（２）１９６９年にユミコと結婚する（１９６４年に化学
学部で出会いました）、（３）１９７１年７月に初めて日本を訪問する
（北海道、東京、京都）です。
１９７１年に私はカナダ研究評議会からポスト・ドックの奨学金を貰
い、スタンフォード大学に２年間行きました。スタンフォード大学は

people’s daily fife. But the area around there was already
known as Silicon Valley because of all the high tech
companies in the area starting in 1956. Hewlett-Packard
was the big company there. I think Steve Jobs, the
founder of Apple was still a high school student there.
Now Mountain View is the headquarters for many IT
companies such as Google.

When we left Edmonton in 1971, there were no
Japanese restaurants in the city. I think Mikado opened
during the period we were away. Mountain View even
had a Japanese restaurant within walking distance from
our apartment, and San Jose, the city beside Mountain
View, had a Japan Town. There was a Japanese
supermarket about a 5 minute drive from our place.
There was a nice authentic Japanese garden in Saratoga,
another city adjoining Mountain View. In the whole Bay
area you didn’t have to go far to find a Japanese
restaurant or a Japan Town. You have to remember that
up the peninsula from San Jose to San Francisco a
distance of about 50 miles, is like one continuous city.
私たちがエドモントンからカリフォルニアに移った１９７１年には、エド
モントンには日本料理店が一軒もありませんでした。ミカドが店を開
いたのは、私がカリフォルニアにいる間です。マウンテン・ビュー市
では私たちのアパートから歩いて行けるところに日本料理店があり
ました。そして隣接するサン・ホセ市にはジャパンタウンまでありまし
た。日本食品を扱うスーパーもアパートから車で五分で行けました。
これもマウンテン・ビュー市に隣接するサラトガ市には本式の日本
庭園までありました。サンフランシスコからサンホセまで５０マイルは
連続した町で、ここには日本料理店、食料店、ジャパンタウン、日本
庭園と日本に関する施設がたくさんありました。
We enjoyed the great climate there, but if it got too hot,
we could always go to the City as the locals called San
Francisco where it was always cool all year round.
Golden Gate Park, Japan Town and Fishermen’s Wharf
were places we visited regularly. The modernization of
Japan Town was just beginning in the early 1970s.
Tourism from Japan was still 10-15 years away.
During our 2 year stay in California, we had many visits
from people we knew from Alberta and Japan: my
relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Shimizu, Yumiko’s parents,
friends returning to Japan, and a friend from Japan,
whom we met in Edmonton, came on his honeymoon
and stayed with us!
In late 1973 we moved to Vancouver and stayed for 3
and a half years. During this time I was at the Chemistry
Departments at UBC and Simon Fraser University. Our
daughter Dee was born in Vancouver in 1974. We really
enjoyed our stay in Vancouver with all the great events,
parks and restaurants. In the first year it seemed like it
rained continuously for 6 months. But after the first year
we hardly noticed if it was raining; we just went ahead
with our plans for the day whether it was raining or not.
Then we spent one year between 1977 and 78 in London,
Ontario before coming back to Edmonton in August 1978,
and have been here ever since. I was at the Chemistry
Department at the University of Alberta and retired in
2005. I have been involved with EJCA off and on, more
on than off since the early 1980’s, so it’s been over 30
years being involved with EJCA. I won’t go into any
details, but it has been a fun and rewarding experience.
Our daughter Dee now lives in Victoria with her husband
Carlos and 2 daughters. I have been to Japan about 15
Times and each vsit is like going to a Japanese imersion school.

サンフランシスコから南に３０マイルの所にあります。この２年間雪を
みることはありませんでした。私たちはマウンテン・ビュー市に住んで
いました。ここはいまでこそＩＴ企業の集うシリコン・バリーの中心です
が、当時はまだコンピュータ、インターネット時代の前でした。ヒューレ
ッドパッカードは既にここに本社を構えていましたが、アップルのスティ
ーブ・ジョブはまだ高校生でした。現在のマウンテン・ビュー市には数
多のＩＴ企業が集まっています。グーグルの本社もあります。
このような便利な施設の利用だけでなく、ここの気候も最適でした。
マウンテン・ビューが暑いと思ったときはサンフランシスコまで出か
けました（地元では単にシティを呼んでいました）。マウンテン・ビュ
ー市よりシティーの方が涼しいのです。サンフランシスコではゴール
デンゲート公園、ジャパンタウン、フィシャーマンズワーフなどがお気
に入りの場所でした。この当時のサンフランシスコはまだ日本から
の旅行者は少なかったです。日本の旅行者が大挙して訪れるように
なるのはこれから１５～２０年たってからです。
カリフォルニアに滞在した二年間に、私たちのところに大勢の人が
来ました。アルバータと日本の友人、シミズ夫妻、私の家族、ユミコ
の両親等々です。日本人でエドモントンで知り合いになった人など
は新婚旅行で私たちの所に泊まっていきました。
１９７３年にバンクーバーに引っ越し、そこで三年半暮らしました。私
はＵＢＣとサイモンフレーザー大学の科学学部で働きました。娘のデ
ィーはバンクーバー滞在中の１９７４年に生まれました。私たちはい
ろいろな行事があり公園やレストランの多いバンクーバーの生活を
満喫しました。最初の年は六ヶ月も降り続くようの思われる雨に辟
易しましたが、二年目からは雨は全く気にならず、晴れても降っても
天気のことを気にせずに生活するようになりました。
１９７７年から７８までオンタリオ州ロンドンで生活して、１９７８年夏に
エドモントンに引っ越して来ました。私がアルバータ大学の化学学部
で働くようになったからです。それ以来ずっとエドモントンで暮らして
います。私は２００５年にアルバータ大学の仕事から引退しました。
私はこの３０年間いろいろな形でＥＪＣＡと関係してきました。とても
楽しいそして実りの多い関係でした。ディーは夫のカルロスと二人の
娘と一緒にビクトリアにいます。わたしは全部で１５回日本に行きま
したが、毎回日本に帰ると、日本語イマージョンコースに入った学生
のような気分になります。

ばらばらに暮らしていた海辺の一家に突然家出をしていた父が戻っ

映画「小さいおうち」（２０１４年）
原作：中島京子、監督：山田洋次
出演：松たか子、黒木華、その他
第 64 回ベルリン国際映画祭のコンペティション部門に選出され、黒
木華が最優秀女優賞（銀熊賞）を受賞した。
元女中のタキが、自身の回想録を元に、かつて奉公していた「赤い
三角屋根の小さいおうち」に住んでいた平井家のことを顧みながら、
ある「密やかな恋愛」について回顧する物語。1930 年代から 1940
年代前半、つまり、昭和初期から次第に戦況が悪化していく中、東
京の中流家庭の生活が描かれる。
映画「居酒屋兆治」（１９８３年）
原作：山口瞳、監督：降旗康男
出演：高倉健、大原麗子、田中邦衛、ちあきなおみ
函館で居酒屋「兆治」を営む藤野英治。輝くような青春を送り、挫折
と再生を経て現在に至っている。かつての恋人で、今は資産家と一
緒になった「さよ」の転落を耳にするが、現在の妻との生活の中で何
もできない自分と、振り払えない思いに挟まれていく。
映画「時代屋の女房」（１９８５年）
原作：村松友視、監督：森崎東、出演：渡瀬恒彦、夏目雅子
東京・大井で骨董屋「時代屋」を営む安さんと呼ばれている 35 歳で独
身の男性と、そこへやってきた真弓という女性が繰り広げる恋物語。

空と君の間、あした、化粧、恩知らず、地上の星、その他
映画「柘榴坂の仇討ち」（２０１４年）
原作：浅田次郎、監督：若松節朗，出演：中井貴一、阿部寛、広松涼子
幕末の安政 7 年、主君・井伊直弼の御駕籠回り近習役として仕えて
いた彦根藩士の志村金吾は、桜田門外において目の前で井伊の殺
害を許してしまう。切腹も許されず、仇討ちを命じられた。
映画「紙の月」（２０１４年）

TV ドラマ「遠まわりの雨」（２０１０年）

で精いっぱい。一家を支えてきた男の誠実さと誇りと悲哀を、山田太
一ならではの会話と展開で描いた。

MATSU NO KAI (55 and up) CLUB

The Matsu no Kai members hope that everyone had a
very good summer and are now ready for the Fall season.
Club members went on their annual outing to Northlands
in July. Our group had the lunch buffet, bet on the races
and cheered on the horses. Everyone always has a good
time regardless of the outcomes. At the July meeting, we
packaged and priced items to be sold at the Heritage
Festival.
In August, several members went on the EJCA
sponsored bus to the Omatsuri Festival in Calgary. It was
fun to travel together and leave the driving to someone
else. We had a chance to sample the food, browse
through the vendors’ tables and watch the entertainment.
With our EJCA happi coats on, the Edmonton contingent
stood out in the crowd.
At the August meeting, Peter showed some of the many
photos he had taken at the Calgary Festival. After lunch,
everyone took part in a recycling game prepared by
Cathy. For the September meeting, we were to collect
items to be taken to the Reuse Centre.
Our September outing will be to the Mayfield Dinner
Theatre for the buffet lunch and to see the show “Dark
Star” which is about Roy Orbison. October is a busy
month with the EJCA’s AGM and the Fall Bazaar so we
will most likely make our annual trek to the casino in
November.
At our October meeting, we will have our Halloween party.
That should be a sight to see, members in their unique
costumes! There is no meeting in December but we will
be going out for a Christmas lunch at the beginning of the
month.
松の会
ピーター・ワン、ルイーズ・ワン
松の会は７月に毎年恒例のノースランズの競馬にいきました。ノー
スランズでビュッフェスタイルの昼食を楽しんでから、会員それぞれ
が馬券を買ったり、ただレースを見物したりしました。競馬は馬券が
当っても外れても、一生懸命に広い競馬場を走る馬を眺めるのが楽
しいものです。周りの観客と一緒になって、自分の馬を声援し、馬が
一団となってグランドスタンド前を通過して、さてどの馬が一着に入
ったかを電光板で確かめるときはドキドキします。ノースランズに行
ったことのない人は来年ぜひご一緒しましょう。７月の例会ではヘリ
テージ・フェスティバルで売る品物の仕分けと値段つけをしました。
８月に会員の数人はＥＪＣＡのチャーターしたバスでカルガリーまで
お祭りフェスティバルに行きました。バスで一緒に旅行をするのは楽
しいものです。カルガリーまでの２時間半はあっという間に過ぎてし
まいます。お祭りでは屋台で食べ物を買い、さまざまな実演を楽しみ
ました。ＥＪＣＡ会員はＥＪＡＣのハッピを着たので、押すな押すなの
群衆中で目立ちました。８月の例会ではキャシーが用意したリサイク
リングゲームを楽しみました。９月の例会では再活用センターに持っ
て行く品物を集めます。
９月にはメイフィールドディナー劇場に行って、ビュッフェスタイルの
昼食の後に「ダークスター」いう演劇を鑑賞します。１０月にはＥＪＣＡ
年次総会と秋のバザーがあるので忙しくなりそうです。今年のカジノ
行きは１１月まで待たなければなりません。１０月の例会ではハロウ
ィーンパーティーを予定しています。皆さんどんな衣装を着てくるか
楽しみです。１２月は例会はありませんが、１２月始めにクリスマス
の昼食会に出かけます。
松の会の月例会は第四水曜日です。毎回１１時から始り、軽い運動
をした後に弁当の昼食をとります。松の会への問い合わせは会長の

to Speak, a memoir of loss, secrets, and
discoveries. It is a love story about finding her

Under the Our Senior “Chizuko Kimura”, the note
mentioned that she "donated the proceeds to the
Winnifred Stewart Association for the mentally
handicapped.” The donation was made to” elves
SPECIAL NEEDS SOCIETY '. Also it mentioned
that “Chizuko was the secretary of the Matsu-no-kai
for several years." She has never been a secretary.

Adult Workshops: Do you love watching taiko performances? Well, now is your
chance to try it for yourself! Our Level 1-3 workshops are designed to teach you the
basics of the complex art form of taiko, and even to learn some songs. Taiko
workshops will challenge your body and mind, and are a great musical and social experience. No previous
musical experience or knowledge of Japanese required. The next Level I are Nov 18 or 25, 2015 6:30-9:30 pm.
Level II will be on Dec 2.

THE KIMIKO SHIMIZU ARTS AND CULTURAL
DEVELOPMENT GRANT

The Kimiko Shimizu Arts and Cultural Development Grant,
in the amount of $500 is awarded annually to support
activities or projects with a strong cultural/craft
component appropriate to the Japanese Canadian
community. For example, applicants might study with a
tea master, attend a taiko workshop, publish poetry,
practice sumi-e, attend a haiku conference, collect
historical artifacts, carry out a specific project (studying in
Japan, developing special media), attend a karate dojo,
conduct research, prepare a manuscript and so on.

The application for the grant must be made by an
individual.
The applicant must be a member in good standing of
the EJCA for the past two years. If the applicant is a
student or child, then the applicant’s parents must
be members in good standing for the past two years.
There is no age restriction for applicants.
There will be a three year waiting period before
recipients of the grant will be eligible to apply for the
award again.
Applicants must fill out the application form* which
must be received at the Edmonton Japanese
Community Association by the deadline date:
October 31, 2015.
