Live Theatre Production - Zero Hour: Tokyo Rose’s Last Tape
by Multiple Award Winning Artist Miwa Yanagi
Conceived, written and directed by multiple award winning Japanese artist

for radio broadcasts, to the painstaking portrayal of Tokyo Rose Annie Oguri.

FEBRUARY MOVIE
Yoji Yamada’s Classic THE YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF
In February we celebrate the career of the incredible Ken Takakura, who sadly passed away in 2014, with
a special screening of the 1977 classic THE YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF.
The film was the first winner of the Japanese Academy Prize for Best Picture and is a heartwarming
gem from the creator of the Tora-san series, Yoji Yamada. This story of three strangers on a road trip to
Hokkaido is by turns laugh-out-loud funny and heartbreaking. One of the central stories, about an exmurderer on parole trying to make his way home to meet his wife, is considered one of Takakura’s best
performances and is handled with poignancy and great sensitivity. Adapted from a short story by the
American novelist Peter Hamill, the film was both a huge hit in Japan and a critical success. Unashamedly
sentimental, this tragic-comedy represents Yamada at the peak of his creative ability.
It also features remarkable performances from every member of its cast: the stoic Ken Takakura,
the benevolent Chieko Baisho (Tora-san's young sister), the irresistibly funny Tetsuya Takeda and the
untamable Kaori Momoi. Don’t miss this rare chance to see this classic film on the big screen!

Spring Festival Haru Matsuri
We have had ice and snow and power outages so far this winter, but
there will be no better way to shake all that off than to head to the JCCC
on Saturday and Sunday March 7 and 8, 2015! This year’s theme is Samurai. Samurais were a part of
Japanese society for more than a 1000 years. While the feudal
system and samurai were officially abolished in the late 1800’s,
their impact helped to shape Japanese society - from the values of
bushido ("the Way of the Warrior") and martial arts to the shape of
Darth Vadar’s helmet in pop culture!
Haru Matsuri will also include Japanese arts and crafts
demonstrations such as Ikebana (flower arranging), Bunka Shishu
(embroidery), Origami (paperfolding) and Sumi-e (brush painting).
The JCCC offers classes in all of these areas and you can sign up for
our Spring programmes. The JCCC's martial artists will demonstrate
the techniques of "the Way of the Warrior" through Aikido, Karate,
Iaido, Naginata, Kyudo and Kendo. For entertainment, there will
be odori (traditional Japanese dancing) by JCCC traditional dance
groups, Koto and Shamisen by the York University Japanese Music
Ensemble and Taiko (Japanese drumming). Japanese cuisine will
also be available in the food court.
As always, the JCCC entrance will feature an elaborate display
of Hina Matsuri Dolls. Also, for a small fee visitors can have the
opportunity to dress in traditional costume then head on over to the
display to take their own photos.
Gather your family and friends and join us as we celebrate the
arrival of Spring!
Date: Saturday March 7 & Sunday March 8, 2015
Time: 12:00 - 5:00pm
Admission: Family $14 (2 adults/2 children), Adults $6,
Children (5-16 yrs) $4, Seniors (over 65) $4,

JCCC Honours Chiune Sugihara & the Jewish Community of
Toronto with Sakura Awards
The Sakura Gala on Saturday November 22, 2014 posthumously honoured Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara and the Jewish
Canadian Community of Toronto, as represented by Honorary Recipient, the late Henry Zagdanski, ‫ל״ז‬. This year marked the first time
the Sakura Award was given to dual recipients, evoking a wonderful synergy. This year’s honourees are caring people who, in the
truest sense of the Hebrew phrase "Tikkun olam", made extraordinary efforts to heal, repair and transform the world.
Chiune Sugihara’s actions in Europe and the Jewish community in Toronto, respectively, demonstrated extraordinary altruism,
humanity and greatness, bringing the Jewish and Japanese people closer together. Diplomat Chiune Sugihara saved thousands of
Jewish lives in Lithuania during WWII by issuing Japanese transit visas out of Europe. Henry Zagdanski, ‫ל״ז‬, co-owner of Nu Mode
Dress Company in Toronto employed many Japanese Canadians following their internment offering employment at a time when jobs
were scarce for Japanese Canadians.
Nobuki Sugihara travelled from Belgium with his wife to represent his late father, Chiune
Sugihara to accept the Sakura Award. Barry Zagdanski, Ian Zagdanski and Felicia Posluns
represented their father Henry Zagdanski, ‫ ל״ז‬to accept his Sakura Award.
The Sakura Gala was a spectacular and moving evening, with speeches by Premier Kathleen
Wynne, Consul-General of Israel to Toronto DJ Schneeweiss and Ambassador of Japan to Canada
Norihiro Okuda. The Sakura Gala also received tremendous corporate and community support,
achieving its fundraising goal for the sixth year in a row.

Sakura Gala 2015 Celebrates the Extraordinary Power of Literature
Japan’s Haruki Murakami and Canada’s Joy Kogawa to receive Sakura Awards

The JCCC is pleased to announce the Seventh Annual Sakura Gala to take place on Saturday May 30, 2015.
In 2015, the JCCC celebrate the extraordinary power of literature to break down barriers and enhance
understanding and tolerance between people, cultures and countries. We do this by honouring two remarkable
literary figures: Haruki Murakami and Joy Kogawa.
The release of a new work of Haruki Murakami’s fiction is an international literary event; he is widely
considered Japan’s greatest living writer and is a perennial favourite for the Nobel Prize for Literature. His
critically acclaimed and award-winning works of fiction and non-fiction are read all over the world and are a
favourite among Canadian readers. As the representative Japanese literary voice to Canadian audiences, Mr.
Murakami’s works introduce modern Japan and its values to Canadians. His influence and central place in the
world of literature are felt and respected. His global reach is symbolic of the impact of Japan and Nikkei on
society.
Joy Kogawa is the acclaimed Nikkei writer and poet whose novel Obasan is the seminal work of JapaneseCanadian literature and one that has educated countless Canadians on the history of the Japanese Canadians
and the critical lessons on human rights and racial equality therein. Her work extends beyond literature; she is
also a philanthropist, educator and cultural historian. Ms. Kogawa established The Historic Joy Kogawa House
Society in her childhood Vancouver home, operating as a writers-in-residence site with regular events and
workshops. Ms. Kogawa has previously received the Order of Canada and the Order of the Rising Sun.

See You in 2015, Santa!
By the Winter Family Festival Committee
The Holidays is the time of year when families come together to share warmth, cheer and good company. When we started the Winter Family
Festival, our goal was to bring families together with activities that everyone might enjoy in a festive, child-friendly atmosphere. This year’s
festival was held on Sunday December 14, 2014, and it was our most successful event to date with over 700 people in attendance.
The festival started an hour earlier this year and we had a great selection of food choices for lunch and lots of yummy snacks, including
some extra special treats from our catering partners, Gushi and COO Cooking Studio. The Craft Market was a new addition and we were glad
to see people taking the opportunity to do some last-minute Christmas shopping.
In the Kobayashi Hall we could hear the squeals of delight as children visited the different activity booths. The Christmas tree ornaments,
buttons, and gingerbread cookie booths were busy all day long, and we saw lots of kids proudly showing off their Ikebana arrangements and
beautiful nail designs. Santa took time from his busy schedule to greet the boys and girls and even brought toys for all the children that lined
up to take a picture with him.
The Winter Family Festival Committee would like to take this time to thank everyone that came out to the festival; we hope you enjoyed
yourselves! To our wonderful sponsors, thank you for your continued support and generosity. But most of all, we would like to give an extra
special thank you to our dedicated committee and all of our hardworking volunteers! Our volunteers are the heart and soul of the JCCC, and
without them we would not be here today.
Wishing you a safe and healthy 2015 and we hope to see you again this year! Mark the date - Sunday December 13, 2015!

New Year’s Eve Dinner & Dance
A Great Success
On the day before, a crew
of volunteers gathered to
inflate the balloons which
were then corralled into
a net to be raised to the
ceiling. Alongside some of
the experienced volunteers,
a few new volunteers worked
hard to achieve the right
“look” for the celebration.
By the late afternoon almost
everything was ready for the
next night.
As people arrived, they
entered the hall to sounds
of music by DJ Ralph Yuen. Photo courtesy of Sid Ikeda (top, middle),
With about 225 guests, the
and La Rhythm (bottom)
room was busy with activity
and greetings. But everyone quickly settled in order to enjoy the
Prime Rib buffet dinner catered by Calvert’s. Immediately following
dinner the attendees took to the dance floor. The lovely dancers
of La Rhythm performed two traditional Chinese folk dances and
there were also opportunities for spot and novelty dances for prizes
throughout the night.
At midnight, the hundreds of balloons cascaded down on the
revellers to greet the New Year. Champagne and sushi was served.
It was a fantastic celebration!
The whole event would not have been possible without the
support and sponsorship of Hong Kong Imports, The Jewel Case,
Kobo Jewellery Inc., Jo-Cy and Edward Lee, Midori Fujiwara, Perry
and Fenella Chai and committee members.
JCCC Shinnen Kai
The Right Way to Start Off a New Year!
Kobayashi Hall was again the place to be for the annual Shinnen
Kai New Year’s Day Banquet. Each year sees a wide variety of
attendees, and together, everyone helped to celebrate the start of
the New Year with fine dining and entertainment.
Chef Kunio Ishii of Toriichi Catering outdid himself again in
preparing the star of the show. The buffet was an incredible array
of traditional o-sechi ryori (new year’s dishes). Rounding out the
evening, we were treated to performances by the JCCC’s staff
members, Sandy Chan and Elizabeth Fujita-Kwan on the piano.
In addition to door prizes, there is a Share the Wealth draw
that saw a few lucky winners share in more than $400 of prize
money. What a wonderful way to start to the year off!
The JCCC is grateful for the support and participation of
Byron Chan, Koji Fujita, and
Jason Kwan, as well as the
other volunteers and staff
who worked together to make
this event happen. A very
special Thank You to Mr. Kunio
Ishii, his family and staff for
celebrating this holiday with us
each year.

Nikkei History, Art, and Culture
on Display!
Look to the Past,
Step Into the Future
A fresh new year is well underway, and Heritage has been busy
with updates and fresh plans for 2015 and beyond.
The Archives of the JCCC have applied for and been awarded
display space in the Ontario Legislative Assembly, from late
March until July, 2015. Through the Community Exhibits Program,
cultural institutions from across the province are able to share their
stories with a wider audience - the Legislative Assembly welcomes
thousands of visitors every year and provides space for museums,
community associations, archives, and art galleries from across
the province to expand their reach. Should you find yourself with
the opportunity to visit the Ontario Legislative Assembly from late
March to July, we encourage you to take a look at what the Archives
has been able to put together!
As well, the Arts Committee has been busy establishing a
well-rounded, exciting program of exhibits and displays that will
be offered in the JCCC Gallery for 2015. First up this year is an
exhibition of works by Nikkei artists Emma Nishimura, Hitoko
Okada, Laura Shintani, and Naomi Yasui. The display is an
excellent cross-section of different mediums, subjects, and ideas,
and we invite the community to come out to the official opening
on Sunday February 15, 2015 from 2pm in the JCCC Gallery.
An artist talk will follow on Sunday March 15, 2015 at 2pm in the
Gallery as well. The exhibit is on now until March 29th, so be sure
to check it out before it’s gone!
Lastly, plans have begun for the JCCC’s 2015 Sakura Gala
to take place in May. This year, as the focus is of a literary nature,
Heritage will be inviting both members and the community at large
to participate in a book review contest and challenge! See article
below for details.
For any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact
Elizabeth Fujita, Manager of Heritage and the Sedai Project at
[email protected], or 416-441-2345 ext 303.
One month has already passed since the beginning of 2015, and
with a look to renewing and refreshing resolutions and goals,
Sedai has been busy planning for the year ahead. As always,
we welcome the addition of voices and perspectives to our video
archives – whether you were born in Canada, born in Japan, or
somewhere in between, we hope to capture the most inclusive
picture of the history of our community. We hope Sedai’s resolve to
look to, record, and remember the past as we step into the future,
be a resolve that we can all share!
First, we’re pleased to announce the release of further video
content on Sedai.ca! We now welcome the voices of Marion, Roy,
Sam, Setsuko, Tak, Mark, and Thomas as we continue discussing
the ever-evolving community of Canadian Nikkei during the postwar
years. With Sam, Setsuko, and Tak, we also further the discussion
and promote the inclusion of voices of those who were born in
Japan, felt the effects of WWII living across the ocean, and would
later immigrate to Canada – furthering our community’s diversity of
identity and experience. We thank all speakers for bravely stepping
forward and continuing to bring continuity to the story of Japanese
immigration to Canada.
As well, Sedai is assisting with a review of educational
programming with the Moriyama Nikkei Heritage Centre, in an
effort to bring the JCCC’s programming further in line with the most
current educational curriculum. Various speakers and topics from
among our video archives will be spotlighted, as our educational
programming continues to focus in on curriculum objectives and
a multimedia approach. As these videos become available for
educational programming, look for them to appear online at Sedai.
ca for everyone to enjoy!
As always, if you have questions, or would like information
regarding recording your family legacy, please contact Elizabeth
Fujita, at [email protected] or 416-441-2345 ext. 303.

for Obasan (1981) and its 1986 adaptation for children Naomi’s Road, as well as several volumes of poetry and a number of other novels.

Safety of Children
Happy New Year! In 2015, the JCCC is striving to do even more to further improve the quality of experiences for our members
and volunteers at the JCCC.
Always foremost on our minds is the safety of children. We are a public place, just like any community centre, library or
shopping mall. It is open to the public, and anyone - members and non-members alike - access our facilities. In order to minimize
the risk of anyone getting hurt, or finding themselves in harm’s way, it is paramount that children are always supervised. Parents
must not leave children unattended at any time. This applies to all families who visit during regular hours, as well as those who
attend or volunteer at JCCC events. During events, visitors or volunteers must not allow their children to wander unsupervised.
For young members who attend our cultural and martial arts classes, they must be dropped off only when instructors are ready
to accept them and picked up punctually after each class.
It takes a combined effort to make sure that the JCCC continues to be a family friendly and welcoming place for all, and we
would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.

Kano: Tales of the Summer
Kelly Fleck
Contributor
It's the equivalent to the IIHF
World Junior Championships,
but even that pales in comparison. In Japan, Kōshien is
the grandest sporting event in
the summer. Students spend
years practicing for even a slim
chance at reaching the top.
Kano is the true story about
one multiracial team from Tai-
University student Carolyn Nakagawa is delving into the legacy
of Harry Aoki, a Japanese-Canadian artist and musician, by
sharing his history through interviews and videos on her blog.
With a research grant from
the University of British Columbia and resources from the Harry Aoki Legacy Project, Nakagawa is creating a tool for people
who want to know more about
Aoki’s life and learn from his
ideas and his work.
She is one of many students
now studying the unique perspectives of Asian Canadians
in the new Asian Canadian and
Asian Migration minors program at the University of British
Columbia.
The program pushes students
to look beyond writing papers
and being confined to the four
walls of a classroom, and to engage with the very communities
that they are studying.

courses, which I was doing before, they’re interesting but it’s

A multiracial team reaches for the top
at the Summer Kōshien, but being the
underdogs is never easy
Mio Matsushita

Hanshin Kōshien Stadium is a
sacred place for Japanese baseball players.
It's where dreams are made
and broken. It's where baseball
stars are born and fizzle. It's
where all high school baseball
teams aspire to win, but dread
to lose. It's a place where young
players, if they're lucky, can become part of the Kōshien story.
Every spring and every summer, baseball teams from around
Japan take part in the Japanese
High School Baseball Championship inside the 55,000 person stadium near Nishinomiya
City. The Summer Kōshien is
especially prominent as 49 high
schools send representatives for
the two-week tournament.
Hollywood veteran Chris Tashima looks
back on his long film making career
Academy Award Winning film maker on the leap of faith he took with a film
and the Oscar he received, but tells of the industry's racism that kept him going
Luke Galati
Contributor
In a sharp black tuxedo and
matching bowtie, Chris Tashima takes the stage at the 1998
Academy Awards.
His small gold earring spar-
kles. His jet-black hair glistens.
And the Oscar that he just won
for Best Live Action Short Film
shines. The thirteen-inch statue
is plated in gold and weighs just
over eight pounds. He grips it
tightly in his left hand.
For Tashima, the award serves
as recognition for the leap of
faith that he took on Visas and
Virtue. He directed the 26 minute film, produced it, co-wrote
the screenplay, and acted as the
lead performer.
The film tells the true story of
Chiune Sugihara, who saved the
lives of over 6,000 Jewish people escaping Nazi persecution
during the holocaust. Sugihara
emerged a hero by writing passports against the will of the Japanese government, which he was
working for as the consul general in Lithuania.
Sixteen years later, Tashima is
now 54. Time has given his hair
a touch of grey. He looks back on
his acting and directing career,
but says that it's still far from
over. He describes Hollywood
as a battle zone, and Tashima’s
