JCCC PARTNERS WITH THE HUMMINGBIRD CENTRE
SANKAI JUKU
KAGEMI - BEYOND THE METAPHORS OF MIRRORS
On Tuesday October 17, 2006, the JCCC and
the Hummingbird Centre for the Performing
Arts will be presenting the legendary Butoh
group Sankai Juku. Japan’s highly theatrical
and most successful contemporary dance
company, Sankai Juku, winner of the 2002
Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production,
returns to Toronto for the first time in ten years.
They will be performing the Canadian première
of KAGEMI - Beyond the Metaphors of Mirrors.
Sankai Juku is led by its founder and visionary,
choreographer and designer Ushio Amagatsu.
His distinctive style combines painted white
dancers against breathtaking large-scale sets
with spectacular lighting. Amagatsu combines
the power and intensity of highly controlled
movement with shifting natural forms such as
sand and water, to create unforgettable images
from every pose and gesture.
Kagemi - Beyond the Metaphors of Mirrors,
is a work in seven tableaux for seven male
dancers. Kagemi explores the shadow world reflected by mirror images. Alternating between shade and light the dancers seem to float
through a forest of giant suspended lotus flowers.
The Butoh dance movement began in the 1960s by the Japanese avant-garde as an expression of the changing times. It was a new and
exciting theatrical language, drawing on the great traditions of Noh and Kabuki theatre dance. Founded in 1975, Sankai Juku took Butoh
and fused it with western modern dance and high-impact visual effects. Sankai Juku has enthralled audiences in more than 700 cities, in 40
countries and has inspired countless choreographers and dancers around the world.
“It’s impossible not to be moved by it. Beautifully designed, evocatively staged and in essence stunningly profound, Sankai Juku is a musthave, or must-be-repeated experience whenever they come to town.”- Eye weekly

JCCC MOVIE NIGHT “UCHOTEN HOTERU – SUITE DREAMS”
A FAST-PACED JAPANESE ALL-STAR COMEDY TRIBUTE TO “GRAND HOTEL”
This popular 2006 film from director Koki Mitani tells the story of a wacky cast of characters
in this complex homage to the 1932 MGM hit, Grand Hotel. A long-separated husband (Koji
Yakusho) and wife (Mieko Harada) reunite with a clash on New Years Eve. Meanwhile, the hotel
bellboy (Shingo Katori) has given up on his dream of becoming a singer and decided to return
home when he meets an old friend and current flight attendant (Kumiko Asou). Meanwhile, the
former mistress (Takako Matsu) of a Japanese Diet member (Koichi Sato) holes up as a maid in
the hotel to avoid the eyes of the public after the scandal breaks . . . meanwhile the Diet Member
who is trying to evade the pending news that he’s involved with the mob also sneaks into the
hotel where he meets a call girl (Ryoko Shinohara).
According to Mark Schilling of the Japan Times: “Mitani takes delight in snappy dialogue, brisk
exposition and clockwork plots with an air of adult sophistication. “The Uchoten Hotel” -- uchoten means “Ecstasy” -- is aptly titled. Not
all the guests leave on a high, but there are smiles all around -- theirs, mine and, if you decide to check in,
yours.”
We hope you check in and check out this fresh new comedy in the Kobayashi Hall this month!
Date: Thursday September 21, 2006
Time: 7:00pm
Admission: $5 for JCCC Members, $7 for Non-members

ALWAYS….AGAIN!
By Popular Demand, an Encore presentation of Always – San-chome no Yuhi
In July we showed the film, Always - Sunset on Third Street. The response was overwhelming with almost 300 in attendance and very
positive reviews. Many members who missed the show have asked if we would have another screening. The answer is “yes” – on
Wednesday September 20, 2006 (the day prior to our screening of Uchoten Hotel)
we will present an encore screening of the film.
“Always” is a sweet nostalgic portrait of the people of Tokyo in the 1950s celebrating the
everyday life of the people, their dreams, hopes, love and tears. It succeeds due to the
great balance of its powerful cast, a well-told story and the nostalgic cinematography.
Winner of 12 Japanese Academy Awards 2006, including the best picture, best
director, best actor, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress.
Date: Wednesday September 20, 2006
Time: 7:00pm
Admission: $5 for JCCC Members, $7 for Non-members

AN EVENING WITH RAYMOND MORIYAMA
On Thursday November 16,
2006 join us for an engaging
evening with world-renowned
Japanese-Canadian architect
Raymond Moriyama. Dr.
Moriyama will discuss the
creation and the symbolism
behind
the
magnificent
architecture of the new
Canadian War Museum
(Ottawa, ON) offering insight
into his creative process,
collaborations, inspirations
and philosophies.
The evening will also feature
the screening of “In Search
of a Soul – Building the
Canadian War Museum.”
Dr. Raymond Moriyama
In this film the Museum’s
journey is recounted through interviews with Dr. Moriyama, his
fellow architects and other key figures, design sketches and
archival images of war. Stunning landscapes, time-lapse and
aerial photography, a history of the Museum’s Ottawa site and a
walkthrough of the finished edifice offer further understanding of its
development as a facility for education, the preservation of artifacts
and reflection on past sacrifices. Moriyama’s theme of regeneration
unifies a design that was influenced by art from the Museum’s
collection, moving footage and photographs of Canadians in battle,
and the cyclical power of nature.
Raymond Moriyama will also take the time to answer audience
questions and to sign copies of his new book about the Museum,
as entitled “In Search of a Soul – Designing and Realizing the
Canadian War Museum”. The search started when he was 12
years old in Bayfarm internment camp during WWII.
See the October issue of the newsletter for more details.

KAMP KODOMO 2006
by Jaime Yamashita
With an enrollment of almost 50 children, this year’s summer Kamp
Kodomo was a great success! During the three weeks of operation,
children were involved in many different activities that kept them
active, energized and engrossed in the Japanese culture.
As an enhancement to the traditional activities of Kamp Kodomo,
the campers had a chance to experience new workshops that
included taiko drumming, anime/cartoon drawings, yoga, Japanese
cooking, harmonica and odori.
Along with a field trip to the Ontario Science Centre, the campers
visited the new Japan exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum during
the final week of the camp. This was the first time Kamp Kodomo
had ventured to the ROM and it was a very successful and
rewarding field trip!
The success of Kamp Kodomo Summer 2006 could not have
been possible without the dedication, enthusiasm and patience
of the many volunteers who helped at the camp. Without their
help, Kamp Kodomo could not have been as much fun and run as
smoothly as it did! A special thank you to the volunteers who helped
make the campers experience memorable--Severin, Rhiannon,
Rieko, Guillaume, Maki, Yukimi, Sahana, Lianna, Jasmine, Kahei,
Bianca and Erica. As well, many thanks to the dedicated class
demonstrators who took time off work and their busy schedules
to come and teach the campers. It was great to see their energy
and support for Kamp Kodomo and the JCCC. Special thanks to:
Christine Takasaki, JCCC’s Judo, Karate, Kendo, Aikido clubs,
Yakudo, Betty Lou Arai, Kai Abe, Chef Shoji, Sam Chou, Galina
Hristoskova, Asato, Carly Noda, Association for Japanese Culture,
Sid Ikeda and Frank Moritsugu.
Stay tuned for Kamp Kodomo 2007!

of the Japanese drum (taiko) since its formation in 1998. The Ensemble has toured widely throughout Canada,
the US and Italy performing in theatres, concert halls, and major music festivals.
While rooted in the folk drumming traditions of Japan, the Ensemble’s principal aim is to rejuvenate this ancient art form by producing
innovative and exciting music that seeks to create a new voice for the taiko. Under the direction of Kiyoshi Nagata, the Ensemble has become
renowned for its exacting, straightforward yet physically demanding performances as well as for its diverse repertoire. Their playing is the

Day committee chair Betty Moritsugu says, “The entertainment
program will include wonderful and rarely seen performances
aimed at the entire family—children as well as their parents and
grandparents. And the performers will include those from at least
four generations”. The planning committee members feel this year’s
event will be one of our best efforts so far. Among the exceptional
entertainers will be a concert pianist from Japan who will entertain
us with Japanese and Canadian pieces. And the song-and-dance
numbers will be delightfully different from the usually seen ones.
There will also a new bilingual play by Yusuke Tanaka that is sure
to keep the children entranced. In the special children’s room
youngsters will learn to make their own Japanese bean-bags as
well as play traditional games with them. Other features include
a new nostalgic photo display, delicious food, and the usual oneday raffle. So there will be something for everyone. Admission is

Heading into the final week of
play, two teams are fighting
it out to see who can avoid
having to play the regular
season champions in the first
round of the playoffs. Paul
Takasaki’s Wietzes Toyota
team leads the league with 7
wins and only 2 losses. With
close to 50 participants, the
20th Anniversary Season has been a big success. Players have
enjoyed 2 after game BBQ’s and still have a season ending BBQ
and League Banquet to look forward to. Current standings (with
team captains) are listed below and a photo from one of the BBQ’s
is seen here.

“LUNCHTIME VIDEO SCREENINGS” AT THE JAPAN INFORMATION CENTRE
by the Consulate General of Japan
Once a month, the Japan Information Centre (JIC) screens short video features on modern Japanese culture, society and other subjects
in the JIC Event Room. Each English-language, lunch-hour screening (12:10 to 12:45) features a regular showing of episodes from the
series Japan Video Topics, as well as other culturally relevant videos in the JIC collection. These screenings are a wonderful opportunity to
discover many things about Japan that you never knew before! Feel free to drop in with your lunch and enjoy the sights and sounds of Japan
on the Event Room’s large movie screen and theatrical sound system. Admission is free, and you’re bound to learn a lot about Japan in the
process!
SCREENINGS FOR FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 8, 2006
Rekishi Kaido Part Five [The fifth in a special series of featurettes showcasing the historical Kansai region of Japan. This Week: Kaya, Amano-Hashidate (Bridge of the Heavens), Eihei-ji Temple, Mt. Hiei, Himeji Castle.]
Mount Fuji – A Timeless Beauty (Japan’s highest peak and most popular national symbol is far more than a “must-see” tourist spot; its
presence and imagery resonate in the everyday lives of the Japanese, particularly those who live in its shadow, and it inspires and moves
the hearts of all who behold it.
Japan Video Topics
· Making the World Safer from Earthquakes (Since the 1995 Kobe earthquake, Japan’s emergency response system has been redesigned
and stricter construction rules are resulting in the development of sturdier, earthquake-proof buildings.
· Saikuzushi – Edible Art (These unique sushi artworks are made to resemble animals, flowers, images of nature, or just about anything
imaginable, and have been adding a seasonal accent to sushi dishes for over 200 years!)
· Move Like a Samurai (Kobujutsu Master Yoshinori Kono demonstrates how the unique movements of samurai martial arts can enhance
performance in modern sports and help people use their bodies more efficiently in daily life.
· Cars that Care for You (Imagine a car that helps you see in the dark, assists you in making emergency stops safely, and even drives itself
– it’s not science fiction, it’s the latest in experimental Japanese automobiles!)
N.B. There will be an encore screening on Wednesday September 20, 2006 at 1:00pm.
JIC COLLECTION SIGNATURE SERIES
In addition to our regular Lunchtime Video Screening program, we are happy to announce a new screening series beginning in September
2006, the JIC Collection Signature Series. These special lunchtime presentations will take place on the last Friday of each month in the
JIC Event Room and will exclusively feature unique videos and video series from the JIC collection that focus deeply on a particular aspect of
Japan. This new monthly presentation will begin with the timeless 1993 documentary series, Nihon no Kokoro: The Heart Within.
Nihon no Kokoro is a gorgeously filmed, exquisitely narrated video series which explores the deeper values and motivations which
distinguish the Japanese people, with the aim of helping viewers to understand the unique perspective of the Japanese and what matters
most to them on an individual, group and ultimately, national level. For those wishing to have a deeper understanding of the Japanese and
their culture, this is simply a must-see program.
Friday September 29, 2006 at 12:10pm
Nihon no Kokoro: Oceans – The Lifeblood of Japan (Much of daily life in Japan revolves around
the oceans, as they are a primary source of food, employment, and natural beauty. They are
also a central theme in nearly all Japanese art, literature, song and worship, as the oceans are
regarded by the Japanese to be divine and thus require constant remembrance, reverence and
respect.)

Honouring An Outstanding Japanese Canadian
On June 26th the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) honoured the life and works of Mrs. Helen Kawaguchi. Family, friends and members of the community gathered for the unveiling of a plaque, created in recognition
of Mrs. Kawaguchi’s commitment to the Centre and the enhancement that the Kawaguchi family has made to the
life of our community.
Mrs. Helen Kawaguchi was a generous member, volunteer, and supporter of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Mrs. Kawaguchi passed away in 1973, and her family has continued her legacy by participating in the future
development of the JCCC in her honour. Mrs. Kawaguchi’s husband, John Kawaguchi, donated the Landscaping to
the first JCCC building in her memory in 1974.
“Unfortunately Helen was never able to see the JCCC become what it has become today, but it was through the vision, dedication and support of members like Helen Kawaguchi that the JCCC is what it is today.”
- James Heron, Executive Director, Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre
The tribute to Mrs. Kawaguchi was enshrined for all to see in the Garden Court Yard outside of the Kobayashi Hall
of the JCCC. Mr. Sid Ikeda, Special Ambassador to the JCCC, unveiled the plaque with the help of the Kawaguchi
family and delivered a speech that highlighted the family relationship with the JCCC, and the influence that Mrs.
Kawaguchi has had on her family’s life and the lives of those at the Centre.
The celebration of Mrs. Helen Kawaguchi and her family was an inspiring evening. Witnessing the generations of
the Kawaguchi family coming together from various distances to pay their tributes along with friends was a monumental occasion.
Thank you to the family and friends of Helen Kawaguchi for making the unveiling such a special night and thank
you for all the support that you have shown the JCCC over the years.
