Issei Day Committee JCCC PARTNERS WITH THE HUMMINGBIRD CENTRE SANKAI JUKU KAGEMI - BEYOND THE METAPHORS OF MIRRORS On Tuesday October 17, 2006, the JCCC and the Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts will be presenting the legendary Butoh group Sankai Juku. Japan’s highly theatrical and most successful contemporary dance company, Sankai Juku, winner of the 2002 Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, returns to Toronto for the first time in ten years. They will be performing the Canadian première of KAGEMI - Beyond the Metaphors of Mirrors. Sankai Juku is led by its founder and visionary, choreographer and designer Ushio Amagatsu. His distinctive style combines painted white dancers against breathtaking large-scale sets with spectacular lighting. Amagatsu combines the power and intensity of highly controlled movement with shifting natural forms such as sand and water, to create unforgettable images from every pose and gesture. Kagemi - Beyond the Metaphors of Mirrors, is a work in seven tableaux for seven male dancers. Kagemi explores the shadow world reflected by mirror images. Alternating between shade and light the dancers seem to float through a forest of giant suspended lotus flowers. The Butoh dance movement began in the 1960s by the Japanese avant-garde as an expression of the changing times. It was a new and exciting theatrical language, drawing on the great traditions of Noh and Kabuki theatre dance. Founded in 1975, Sankai Juku took Butoh and fused it with western modern dance and high-impact visual effects. Sankai Juku has enthralled audiences in more than 700 cities, in 40 countries and has inspired countless choreographers and dancers around the world. “It’s impossible not to be moved by it. Beautifully designed, evocatively staged and in essence stunningly profound, Sankai Juku is a musthave, or must-be-repeated experience whenever they come to town.”- Eye weekly Date & Time: Location: Tickets: Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 8:00pm The Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts, 1 Front St. East, Toronto, Ontario Specially priced tickets are available at the JCCC for JCCC members. A long-separated husband (Koji Yakusho) and wife (Mieko Harada) reunite with a clash on New Years Eve. Meanwhile, the hotel bellboy (Shingo Katori) has given up on his dream of becoming a singer and decided to return home when he meets an old friend and current flight attendant (Kumiko Asou). Meanwhile, the former mistress (Takako Matsu) of a Japanese Diet member (Koichi Sato) holes up as a maid in the hotel to avoid the eyes of the public after the scandal breaks . . . meanwhile the Diet Member who is trying to evade the pending news that he’s involved with the mob also sneaks into the hotel where he meets a call girl (Ryoko Shinohara). According to Mark Schilling of the Japan Times: “Mitani takes delight in snappy dialogue, brisk exposition and clockwork plots with an air of adult sophistication. “The Uchoten Hotel” -- uchoten means “Ecstasy” -- is aptly titled. Not all the guests leave on a high, but there are smiles all around -- theirs, mine and, if you decide to check in, yours.” We hope you check in and check out this fresh new comedy in the Kobayashi Hall this month! Date: Thursday September 21, 2006 Time: 7:00pm Admission: $5 for JCCC Members, $7 for Non-members In Japanese with English subtitles. ALWAYS….AGAIN! By Popular Demand, an Encore presentation of Always – San-chome no Yuhi In July we showed the film, Always - Sunset on Third Street. The response was overwhelming with almost 300 in attendance and very positive reviews. Many members who missed the show have asked if we would have another screening. The answer is “yes” – on Wednesday September 20, 2006 (the day prior to our screening of Uchoten Hotel) we will present an encore screening of the film. “Always” is a sweet nostalgic portrait of the people of Tokyo in the 1950s celebrating the everyday life of the people, their dreams, hopes, love and tears. It succeeds due to the great balance of its powerful cast, a well-told story and the nostalgic cinematography. Winner of 12 Japanese Academy Awards 2006, including the best picture, best director, best actor, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress. Date: Wednesday September 20, 2006 Time: 7:00pm Admission: $5 for JCCC Members, $7 for Non-members In Japanese with English subtitles. Dr. Moriyama will discuss the creation and the symbolism behind the magnificent architecture of the new Canadian War Museum (Ottawa, ON) offering insight into his creative process, collaborations, inspirations and philosophies. The evening will also feature the screening of “In Search of a Soul – Building the Canadian War Museum.” Dr. Raymond Moriyama In this film the Museum’s journey is recounted through interviews with Dr. Moriyama, his fellow architects and other key figures, design sketches and archival images of war. Stunning landscapes, time-lapse and aerial photography, a history of the Museum’s Ottawa site and a walkthrough of the finished edifice offer further understanding of its development as a facility for education, the preservation of artifacts and reflection on past sacrifices. Moriyama’s theme of regeneration unifies a design that was influenced by art from the Museum’s collection, moving footage and photographs of Canadians in battle, and the cyclical power of nature. Raymond Moriyama will also take the time to answer audience questions and to sign copies of his new book about the Museum, as entitled “In Search of a Soul – Designing and Realizing the Canadian War Museum”. The search started when he was 12 years old in Bayfarm internment camp during WWII. See the October issue of the newsletter for more details. Family, friends and members of the community gathered for the unveiling of a plaque, created in recognition of Mrs. Kawaguchi’s commitment to the Centre and the enhancement that the Kawaguchi family has made to the life of our community. Mrs. Helen Kawaguchi was a generous member, volunteer, and supporter of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Mrs. Kawaguchi passed away in 1973, and her family has continued her legacy by participating in the future development of the JCCC in her honour. Mrs. Kawaguchi’s husband, John Kawaguchi, donated the Landscaping to the first JCCC building in her memory in 1974. “Unfortunately Helen was never able to see the JCCC become what it has become today, but it was through the vision, dedication and support of members like Helen Kawaguchi that the JCCC is what it is today.” - James Heron, Executive Director, Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre The tribute to Mrs. Kawaguchi was enshrined for all to see in the Garden Court Yard outside of the Kobayashi Hall of the JCCC. Mr. Sid Ikeda, Special Ambassador to the JCCC, unveiled the plaque with the help of the Kawaguchi family and delivered a speech that highlighted the family relationship with the JCCC, and the influence that Mrs. Kawaguchi has had on her family’s life and the lives of those at the Centre. The celebration of Mrs. Helen Kawaguchi and her family was an inspiring evening. Witnessing the generations of the Kawaguchi family coming together from various distances to pay their tributes along with friends was a monumental occasion. Thank you to the family and friends of Helen Kawaguchi for making the unveiling such a special night and thank you for all the support that you have shown the JCCC over the years.
