HARU MATSURI 2010
With the weird weather that we have been having this winter, who knows how they will be feeling
about the season by the beginning of March. The one thing that the JCCC can guarantee is that
spring will arrive at our doors on March 6 and 7, 2010! The JCCC will be opening their doors to
everyone as they celebrate a weekend filled with activities, entertainment and exhibits at Haru
Matsuri 2010!!
This year’s theme is Fans. Fans are seen throughout cultures around the world, but the
invention of the folding fan is credited to the Japanese. Fans have been used for centuries for
many different purposes from decorative uses, ceremonial uses, artistic uses, military uses and
even for the purely practical uses for cooling oneself on a hot day. Whatever the reason, fans
are an integral part of the Japanese culture. We hope that they will be a wonderful inspiration for
this year’s festival.
Haru Matsuri will also include Japanese arts and crafts demonstrations such as Ikebana
(flower arranging), Bunka Shishu (embroidery), Origami (paperfolding) and Sumi-e (brush
painting). The JCCC offers classes in all of these areas and you can sign up for our Spring programmes. The JCCC's martial artists will
demonstrate the techniques of "The Way of the Warrior" through Aikido, Judo, Karate, Iaido, Naginata, and Kendo.
For entertainment, there will be odori (traditional Japanese dancing) by JCCC traditional dance groups Ayame-Kai and Sakura-Kai,
Koto by the Toronto Chikushikai and Taiko (Japanese drumming). Japanese cuisine will also be available in the food court.
As always the JCCC and Kobayashi Hall will be colourfully and elaborately decorated to welcome the spring and the long-awaited close
of the winter season. Festival guests entering the Centre will be greeted by an elaborate display of Hina Matsuri Dolls.
Gather your family and friends and come to the JCCC, and join us as we celebrate the arrival of Spring!

February Movie Night
Turtles Are Surprisingly Fast Swimmers
A very funny, slightly strange comedy about spys, bored housewives and
turtles!
February's film is a light, screwball comedy from director Miki Satoshi (ADRIFT IN
TOKYO) . "Turtles" is the tale of an ordinary housewife frustrated with her mundane life.
Suzume Katakura is an ordinary housewife. Her husband has been sent overseas on
business, and although he phones her regularly, he is more concerned with the heath
and welfare of his pet turtle. The days pass monotonously; it is though no one pays her
any attention, not even her husband. The ordinariness of her life is interrupted one day
when she spots a flyer in a stairway advertising for spies. Intrigued, Suzume phones the
number. Three days later she is instructed to go to a run down apartment. She is greeted
by a man and woman - he is unemployed, she is a shopping mall announcer. They
claim to be working for a foreign state, and just like Suzume they are ordinary people
with ordinary lives. The couple persuade Suzume to become a secret agent too. They
virtually force 5 million yen onto Suzume, and so begins her life as a spy!
The film stars Ueno Juri (SWING GIRLS) and Yu Aoi. In Japanese with English
subtitles.

The JCCC Heritage Committee once again presents their popular
March Break event, Nikkei Kids Day. This year, it will be held on
Monday March 15, 2010. Like the previous years it will be packed
with exciting activities for children, and is a great way to spend the
first day of March Break. It is also a good opportunity to involve
grandparents, parents, and children in activities that will encourage
children to become interested in their family’s Japanese ancestry.
At Nikkei Kids Day, children can:
- Learn about Japanese prefectures at the Kenjinkai display tables
- Have their name written in Japanese calligraphy
- Draw and colour anime/manga-style characters
- Create and play with paper crafts
- View Dr. Henry Shimizu’s paintings and learn about life in New Denver during the internment years
- Take a Japanese cooking class
- View an anime feature movie
- Have a memorial photo taken
- And much, much more!
There are two free sessions to choose
from: morning (9:00am to 11:00am)
or afternoon (1:00pm to 3:00pm).
There is no charge to participate in
this event, but a parent, grandparent,
or adult guardian must accompany
each participant for the entire session.

Yamamoto Kyogen Company Canadian
Debut! North American Tour March 2010
Kyogen,
the
Japanese
classical
comic
theater,
like Noh, originated from
Sarugaku which developed in
the early 14th century, when
acting troupes in a variety
of centuries-old theatrical
traditions were touring and
performing at temples, shrines
and festivals, often with the
patronage of the nobility.
Kyogen is comic theater and
its stories are derived from
mundane subjects and depict
daily life through dialogue
and mime. The comedy and

humanity.
Designated "Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage
of Humanity" by UNESCO, Noh and Kyogen are world-renowned
forms of traditional Japanese theater with a more than 600-year-old
history.
On March 29, 2010 the Yamamoto Kyogen Company will be
performing at the JCCC Kobayashi Hall, the last stop of their North
American tour. Yamamoto Kyogen Company is the only Tokyobased Okura School of Kyogen, which is one of two schools
practicing in Japan today, and is celebrating the 100th anniversary
of its own Noh theatre. The audience will be able to enjoy an
authentic experience of Kyogen with the JCCC traditional Noh
stage built in the Kobayashi Hall for this occasion.
In this tour Yamamoto Kyogen Company features two plays,
Shido Hogaku (Stop in Your Tracks), which is typical of feudalisticera Kyogen comedies, and Tsukimi Zato (Moon-viewing Blind Man),
which is a play unique to the Okura School of Kyogen.
The following are summaries of these two stories.
Shido Hogaku (Stop in Your Tracks): A samurai master sends
his servant on a shameful errand to his uncle’s house to procure a
box of tea, a sword and a horse – items that any decent samurai
should already possess. Faced with the disgrace of this errand, the
servant grudgingly sets off. Upon arriving, the servant learns from
the uncle that the horse has a peculiar tick; whenever someone
sneezes, the horse rears and throws its rider.
The master grows impatient for the return of his servant and
sets out in search of him. They meet on the road and the master
orders the servant to walk and mounts the horse himself. The
servant sneezes, sending the horse into a fright and toppling the
master from the horse. The master, shaken, orders the servant to
mount the unruly horse himself, and then proceeds to carry the tea
box and sword as they continue home.
The servant suggests that it would be humiliating for the
master to be seen walking behind a horse while his servant rides,
and proposes that they should pretend as if he were the master and
that the master were the servant. The master reluctantly agrees,
and the servant proceeds to treat the master as the master has
treated him – yelling and screaming insults at him.
Tsukimi Zato (Moon-viewing Blind Man): It is “Moon-viewing
Night,” and a blind man heads out to enjoy a moonlit stroll. Although
he can’t see the moon, he enjoys listening to the sounds of the night.
A passerby approaches and strikes up a conversation with the blind
man, eventually offering him a drink from his flask. Warmed by the
alcohol, they begin to sing and dance for each other. After some
time they go their separate ways, seemingly fast friends.
The passerby, now alone, decides to play a trick on the blind
man. He returns, and, pretending he is someone else, bumps into
the blind man. They argue, and the passerby throws the blind man
to the ground and runs off. The saddened blind man picks himself
up and continues on his way home, musing about how nice the first
man was and how cruel the second was.
Date: Monday March 29, 2010
Time: 7:00pm
Admission: JCCC members $25, non-members $30,
students $25

a game for four players that originated in China. It involves skill,
strategy, and calculation, as well as a certain degree of luck.

the end of March. We hope that everyone will enjoy an opportunity
to meet new friends and relax through this workshop.
Details will be announced in the March issue.

Kohaku 2009 – An Unforgettable Festival of Song and Symphony of Light
December 12 marked an unforgettable evening of songs intertwined with dances and skits as the Kokaku committee created a festival of
music and a fantastic lighting symphony. If you haven’t experienced the Kokaku show before make sure to come next year when the Akagumi
(Red Team - women) will defend this year’s victory!

New Year’s Eve Dinner and Dance is a night of Elegance and Tradition!
December 31 in the Kobayashi Hall, was the place to be to ring in the New Year Eve with dinner and dancing.
150 revelers filled the room, dressed in beautiful gowns, cocktail dresses, suits and tuxedos. Once again the
Kobayashi hall was beautifully transformed by our wonderful volunteer decorators.
The evening started with a delicious buffet by Calvert’s Catering that featured prime rib roast. Once
dinner ended, popular disc jockey Ralph Yuan had the crowd on their feet. The elegant dancers floated
around the room amid the sparkling reflections off the mirrored ball. Midnight brought the arrival of 2010
to the sounds Auld Lang Syne and the sights of multi-coloured balloons cascading down from the ceiling.
We would like to extend many thanks to our fantastic organizing committee for a successful and exciting

evening.
The planning for New Year’s Eve 2010 starts in September and we anticipate the addition of a few new committee members. Be sure to
mark your calendars and plan to join us for the festivities next year.
Sold-out Crowd for JCCC’s Annual Shinnen Kai
Kobayashi Hall was again the place to be for the annual Shin-nen Kai New Year’s Banquet. With more than 350 attendees, the start of a new
year and a new decade was celebrated with an incredible evening of fine dining and entertainment. Chef Kunio Ishii of Toriichi Catering outdid
himself again in preparing the star of the show. The buffet was an incredible array of traditional o-sechi ryori (new year’s dishes) including
nishime, zoni, sashimi, sushi and so much more. Rounding out the evening, the new JCCC Hula performing groups and Tak Yoshida took
to the stage for a short show.
The JCCC is grateful for the support and participation of the JCCC Hula dancers, Tak Yoshida, Koko Kikuchi, Kunio Ishii and family, as
well as all the volunteers and staff who worked together to make this event happen.
This fantastic family event continues to grow each year and was sold out by the December 18th deadline. If you want to make sure that you’re
guaranteed a seat at next year’s celebration, you will have to be sure to buy your tickets early.

The Business Meeting for Japanese
Foods & Beverages
by The Organization to Promote Japanese Restaurants Abroad
The Organization to Promote Japanese Restaurants Abroad (JRO)
is holding a two-day Japanese food event “The Business Meeting
for Japanese Foods & Beverages” for people in the trade on
February 17 and 18, 2010 at the JCCC.
The purpose of the meeting is to disseminate the wide use
of “made-in-Japan” ingredients to local foodservice markets, and
ultimately to increase the richness and diversity of food cultures in
Canada.
There are already over 200 Japanese styled restaurants in
Toronto’s wide array of dining, which is increasingly important since
more and more restaurants are interested in employing Japanese
ingredients in their cooking.
Being there will be leading Japanese food and beverage
companies at the event, JRO expects a great deal of opportunity
for local restaurant managers and buyers to acquire ideas for
development of new products and supply networks.
Furthermore, during the period of the event, JRO will be
holding some seminars and workshops to showcase some ways to
use Japanese ingredients in cooking.

JCCC Judo Sensei represents Canada
at the 1st World Judo Kata Championship in Malta
On October 18, 2009,
Judo sensei Gerry
Okimura from the
JCCC dojo and Tom
Hino from the Peterborough Hatashita dojo,
represented Canada
at the inaugural World
Kata Championship in
Malta. They placed 5th

Shin Jitsu (self-defense
forms) division. Going into the finals the Canadians were running
2nd to the Japanese but they ultimately placed 5th with the Japanese winning the championship.
Judoka Gerry Okimura and Tom Hino practiced intensely for
over a year to perfect their timing and the subtleties of the demanding kata which demonstrates various defenses against increasingly aggressive grabs, kicks, chokes, punches, strikes with a jo
(long stick) and attacks with a tanto (knife) and a gun.
As partners they are well matched in size and skill and their
demonstration of this kata is infused with “zanshin” ~ action wthout
hesitation and being completely in the moment. This achievement
is even more remarkable considering that Gerry and Tom are in
their 50’s and 60’s respectively.
Subsequent to their competition , Tom Hino was awarded his
Godan (5th degree black belt) by “batsukan” which means an exemption from examination by virtue of proven judo prowess on the
tatami. This is a rare honour. Both Okimura and Hino sensei are
national level Judo Canada referees and well respected in the judo
community.
Gerry Okimura has been a sensei at the JCCC for over 20
years and continues to lead the Women’s judo club every Sunday
afternoon. A few years ago this judo class was featured in an article in Macleans magazine. The women judoka form a small but
dedicated group, full of judo spirit and they are thrilled to be taught
by their accomplished sensei.
Well done Gerry and Tom! You have represented not only
Canada but also your community with pride.
