(賢い人ならそんなことはしないだろう) A little water would have saved the dog. = If there had been a little water, it would have saved the dog. To hear him speak English, you would take him for an American. =If you heard him speak English, you would take him for an American. (もし彼が英語を話すのを聞けば、彼をアメリカ人とまちがえるだろう) The same man, living in the wartime, would be a hero. =If the same man were living in the wartime, he would be a hero. With a little more patience, you would succeed. = If you had a little more patience, you would succeed. A little more effort, you would succeed. = If you made a little more effort, you would succeed. Anyone who did that should be laughed at. = If anyonedid [should do] that, he should be laughed at. I followed his advice; otherwise I would have failed. = If I had not followed his advice, I would have failed. 仮定法に関連した重要表現 [A] 願望表現:I wish S V・・・./How I wish S V・・・!/If only S V・・・! ①I wish S V・・・. I wish I were [was] rich. (金持ちならばなあ) I wish he could have joined us then. I am sorry I am not rich./I am sorry he could not join us then. ② If only ~ !「~でさえあればよいのに」 If only this water were[was] wine ! He looks as if he were ill. (彼は病気であるかのような顔をしている) He looks as if he had been ill. (彼は病気であったかのような顔をしている) [C]「・・・がなければ」 but for N = without N = if it were not for N/if it had not been for N = were it not for N/had it not been for N 「N がなければ/N がなかったら」 ※if it were not for N は仮定法過去、if it had not been for N は仮定法過去完了。were it not for N、had it not been for N but for N、without N But for your help, he would fail. = Without your help, he would fail. = If it were not for your help, he would fail. = Were it not for your help, he would fail. (あなたの助けがなければ、彼は失敗するでしょう) But for your help, he would have failed. = Without your help, he would have failed. = If it had not been for your help, he would have failed. = Had it not been for your help, he would have failed. (あなたの助けがなかったら、彼は失敗したでしょうに) - 137 - [D]It is time ~(仮定法過去「もう~すべき時だ」) It’s time you went to bed.(もう寝る時間ですよ) It’s time you knew the facts of life. It is high time S V・・・. It’s about time S V・・・. - 138 -
