不定詞の副詞的用法で、ここでは目的を表す。

in which に続く部分が名詞 letters を後ろから修飾している。

■ 日本語訳
聖バレンタインは 3 世紀のローマに住んでいた。彼は優しい心を持っていたので、貧乏な人や病気の人
を気の毒に思った。彼はいろいろな方法でそうした人を助けるために一生懸命働いた。彼はまた子どもが
大好きだった。彼は子どもたちに愛の言葉が書かれた手紙を添えたプレゼントをあげた。
ある日、聖バレンタインは捕らえられて、監獄に入れられた。ついに彼は 269 年 2 月 14 日に殺された。
聖バレンタインデーは彼の悲劇的な死を思い出させる。彼は「愛の聖人」と呼ばれ、鳥でさえも彼の肩の
上で愛の歌を交わしたと人々は言った。
今日では恋人たちが互いにカードを贈る。カードは普通、絵が印刷されている。日本ではこの日に、女
の子が恋する男の子にチョコレートをあげるのが習慣となっている。そのチョコレートはたいていハート
の形をしている。ところが、単にジョークで人にチョコレートをあげる人たちもいる。もちろんこの場合、
あげた人は相手を愛しているわけではない。
