Moss is an investigative reporter for The New York Times. In his bestselling book Salt, Sugar, Fat, Moss writes about how processed-food companies are taking over the American diet, and how those companies hope that consumers won’t understand what they are up to. Moss’s book describes the huge social and health costs of this trend. He tells how processed-food manufacturers add high amounts of three specific ingredients to their foods: salt, sugar, and fat. Such processed foods have been known for decades to have little nutritional value, to cause people to gain weight and develop serious health problems, and perhaps most alarming, many scientists also believe that people can be addicted to this type of food. Why is this a problem? Once we eat enough foods that contain lots of salt and sugar, our taste changes. Regular food does not taste good to us anymore. Some scientists say that people will eventually become addicted to this type of food, and they will probably not understand how or why. While it is possible for a food manufacturer to produce healthier processed foods, it would be more expensive and not taste as good. Also the company would lose customers—and most important, profits. One expert expressed his concern: “We’ve become upset by the tobacco companies advertising to children, but sit idly by while food companies do the same thing.” 1 Michael Moss is a/an 1 writer for The New York Times. 2 book author. 3 investigative reporter. 4 all of these —4— 2 If we eat these foods too often, our ____________________ will change and we will no longer like regular food. 1 tongues 2 tastes 3 bodies 4 health 3 If companies did not create processed foods, they would lose 1 weight. 2 money. 3 nutrition. —5— 4 understanding. Ⅲ 次の英文を読み、それぞれの問いに対する答えとして最も適当なものを 1 ~ 4 の 中から一つ選び、その番号を記入しなさい。 In many of the developing countries in Africa and Asia, the population is increasing fast. The reason for this is simple: Women in these countries have a high birth rate—from 3.0 to 7.0 children per woman. The majority of these women are poor, without the food or resources to care for their families. Why do they have so many children? Why don’t they limit the size of their families? The answer may be that they often have no choice. There are several reasons for this. One reason is economic. In a traditional agricultural economy, large families are helpful. Having more children means having more workers in the fields and someone to take care of the parents in old age. In an industrial economy, the situation is different. Many children do not help a family; instead, they are an expense. Thus, industrialization has generally brought down the birth rate. This was the case in Italy, which was industrialized quite recently and rapidly. In the early part of the twentieth century, Italy was a poor, largely agricultural country with a high birth rate. After World War II, Italy’s economy was rapidly modernized and industrialized. By the end of the century, the birth rate had dropped to 1.3 children per woman, the world’s lowest. However, the economy is not the only important factor that influences birth rate. Saudi Arabia, for example, does not have an agriculture-based economy, and it has one of the highest incomes per person in the world. Nevertheless, it also has a very high birthrate(7.0). Mexico and Indonesia, on the other hand, are poor countries, with largely agricultural economies, but they have recently reduced their population growth. Clearly, other factors are involved. The most important of these is the situation of women. A high birth rate almost always goes together with lack of education and low status for women. This would explain the high birth rate of Saudi Arabia. There, the traditional culture gives women little education or independence and —6— few possibilities outside the home. On the other hand, the improved conditions for women in Mexico, Thailand, and Indonesia explain the decline in birth rates in these countries. Their governments have taken measures to provide more education and opportunities for women. Another key factor in the birth rate is birth control. Women may want to limit their families but have no way to do so. In countries where governments have made birth control easily available and inexpensive, birth rates have gone down. This is the case in Singapore, Sri Lanka, and India, as well as in Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico, and Brazil. In these countries, women have also been provided with health care and help in planning their families. These trends show that an effective program to reduce population growth does not have to depend on better economic conditions. It can be effective if it aims to help women and meet their needs. Only then, in fact, does it have any real chance of success. 1 What is the main idea of the passage? 1 woman in developing countries 2 economic influences on birth rate 3 birth rates in developing countries 4 factors that influence birth rate 2 Why is the birth rate low in Italy? Because 1 large families are convenient. 2 children are regarded as workers. 3 it is now modernized and industrialized. 4 before World War II, it was an agricultural society. —7— 3 Why is Saudi Arabia mentioned in the passage? Because it shows that 1 the most important factor influencing birth rate is the economy. 2 factors other than the economy influence birth rate. 3 women who have a high income usually have few children. 4 the birth rate depends on the income per person. 4 Why is Mexico’s birth rate lower today? Because 1 women are more educated. 2 it is a poor country. 3 its economy has been improved. 4 the government gives women few opportunities. 5 What can be understood from the passage? 1 In Sri Lanka, the government does little to bring the birth rate down. 2 The family planning campaign cannot be effective without meeting women’s needs. 3 The economic condition of a country is the least important factor in population growth. 4 Industrialization and agriculture should go hand in hand. will, medicine, feel, make, this, you 2 それらの 2 国間には何らかの誤解があったようだ。 two, have, those, misunderstanding, between, there, some, to, seems, countries Ⅴ 以下の文章の続きを自由に英語で書きなさい。 I received some good advice the other day. ※ 今年度の入試では、IVおよびVのような形式の問題や英作文問題はありません。 全問、I∼IIIのような記号解答方式の問題です。 —9—
