Faster uptake and higher photodynamic therapy effect of octagonal
carboxyl phthalocyanine than that of aluminium tetrasulfonated
phthalocyanine

Introduction
Photosensitizer (PS) of phthalocyanine (Pc) class which has unique properties are widely applicated in
photodynamic therapy (PDT). Especially water-soluble aluminium tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (AlTSPc),
but its uptake rate is relatively slow. We know that quantum dots (QDs) with carboxylic has good
biocompatibility and has fast uptake character. So in this work, we study whether Octagonal carboxyl
phthalocyanine (Pc-COOH) which is a new synthetic PS has more advantages than AlTSPc or not, such as
faster uptake and higher PDT effect features.

Uptake rate of Pc-COOH is faster than
AlTSPc’s (fluorescence relatively large
difference between the two Pcs at 3 h).
Phototoxic effect of AlTSPc is lower
than Pc-COOH’s for every different
exposure time, in particular, for 50 min
exposure time.
