Verbs in the Past Tense When a verb has the ending _ed, it tells you that the ac:on happened in the past • Regular verbs add _ed to make the past tense • Pick + ed = picked • Laugh + ed = laughed • Happen + ed= happened • Shout + ed = shouted • Whisper + ed= whispered • Add two of your own Generally, if the infiniEve ( to clap, to stop) ends in a single vowel (a,e,i,o,u) + a single consonant, you double the consonant before adding –ed • Clap +p + ed = clapped • Stop +p + ed= stopped • Hop +p + ed= hopped • Rub +b + ed= rubbed • Add two of your own • If the verb ends in an e, you just add d • Smile + d = smiled • Hike + d = hiked • Tickle + d = Eckled Add two more of your own • If the verb ends in a consonant + y, change the y to i and add ed • Cry + I = cried • Copy + i = copied • Hurry + I = hurried • Add two more of your own • If the verb ends in a vowel + y, just add _ed • Play + ed =played • Stay + ed=stayed • Obey + ed=obeyed • Add two of your own • If the verb ends in ie, just add _d • Tie + d =Eed • Lie + d= lied • Can you think of another?
