Blythedale Childrens Hospital 2011 Annual Report

2011 ANNUAL REPORT
A beacon of hope and inspiration for
seriously ill children and their families
Our Mission
Blythedale Children’s Hospital
is dedicated to significantly
improving the health status and
quality of life of infants, children,
and adolescents who have complex
and disabling medical conditions/
illnesses. We accomplish this in four
ways:
Patient Care
Blythedale is a national leader
in the diagnosis and treatment of
children with disabling and complex
medical conditions.
Research
Blythedale is a research center dedicated
to discovering ways of improving the
care of children with special needs.
Teaching
Blythedale is training the next generation
of healthcare professionals in the
diagnosis and treatment of children with
complex medical needs.
Advocacy
Blythedale advocates tirelessly at the
federal and state levels to ensure that
the highly specialized needs of all
children are met. We serve children
without regard to religion, race or
ability to pay. Although we treat
children from any locality, we
consider the greater New York
metropolitan area, Hudson
Valley and Connecticut to be
our primary communities.
Dear Friends,
We are very proud to share the 2011 Annual Report of Blythedale Children’s Hospital. Last year was historic for
Blythedale, as we cut the ceremonial ribbon and officially opened the doors of our new $65.3 million, 56,000 square-foot
replacement inpatient building.
For more than 120 years, we at Blythedale Children’s Hospital have prided ourselves on delivering the highest levels of
quality healthcare and medical rehabilitation services to the region’s most medically fragile patients. With the opening of
our new building, we now have state-of-the-art facilities that match the extraordinary level of expertise and care that our
doctors, nurses and therapists have provided for so many years.
On December 6th, we moved our patients from the existing building into the new one in a precisely orchestrated
maneuver. Cheers and high-fives greeted our children as they were settled into their beautiful, sun-filled rooms. By the
end of the week, all 86 beds were filled.
To those who share our dream and have continued to support Blythedale – individuals, foundations, corporations, and
the community – we are deeply honored by your commitment to our Hospital. There has certainly never been a more
gratifying time to be part of the Blythedale family.
We also gratefully acknowledge those individuals whose foresight and gift-planning are providing for Blythedale’s future.
Your commitment provides the gift of health to future generations of children.
For those who have not had the opportunity to see the “new” Blythedale, we encourage you to do so. Because truly, to
make a difference in the life of a child makes all the difference in the world. We thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Owen Gutfreund

Patient Care
Research
Providing exemplary patient care is central to everything we do. With the opening of our new inpatient
building in 2011, we now have a state-of-the-art facility that matches the extraordinarily high level of
care we have provided for decades. With more than 120 years of experience, Blythedale is a nationally
recognized leader in developing innovative, multidisciplinary inpatient programs. As one of only
19 specialty children’s hospitals in the United States, Blythedale has the combined staff, expertise
and resources – including the largest pediatric therapy department in New York State – to provide
exceptional, comprehensive care for medically complex children and support for their families.
Research is a top priority at Blythedale. Through its Pediatric Research Program, Blythedale is conducting
selected studies that promise to have a significant impact on treatment modalities for children with
complex medical and physical challenges. Blythedale’s Scientific Advisory Board provides feedback on
our research studies. Recognizing collaborations as integral to its vision, Blythedale has teamed with
hospitals and universities to share findings.
Blythedale cares for children with a wide range of complex and often catastrophic medical and
rehabilitative conditions, including complex respiratory disease, traumatic brain injury, heart disease,
cancer, neuromuscular disorders, and other serious genetic conditions. Through its inpatient and day
hospital programs, Blythedale treats more than 300 children daily, making it one of the largest providers
of children’s health services in the State. Ensuring care of the whole child, Blythedale is the only hospital
in New York State with its own K-12 public school district on-site serving its patients.

• In November 2011, Blythedale celebrated the
opening of its new $65.3 million, 56,000 squarefoot replacement inpatient building. Patients
were moved into the new hospital, which
features 86 beds in private and semi-private
patient rooms, on December 6.
(EMR). The Hospital went “live” with the new
system for order entry and physician, nurse and
therapist documentation in January 2011, as the
latest stage in a three-year, $7 million initiative
to upgrade the IT infrastructure and clinical care
model at Blythedale.
• Blythedale recorded 368 unique patient
admissions in 2011, totaling 22,610 inpatient
days. Approximately half were admitted for
comprehensive acute inpatient rehabilitation
(including recovery from complicated surgery,
stroke, multiple trauma, and rheumatologic
and neurologic crisis), while nearly a third were
admitted for respiratory care or ventilator
weaning. The Hospital’s average length of stay
was 52 days. The Hospital received admissions
from 26 hospitals and leading academic centers
in 2011, including New York-Presbyterian
(Columbia and Cornell), Westchester Medical
Center, Montefiore Medical Center, Steven
and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center
of New York/North Shore LIJ Health System,
Mt. Sinai and NYU/Bellevue.
• Blythedale continued contracting with school
districts in the greater metropolitan region to
provide on-site Physical Therapy (27 schools in
11 districts), Occupational Therapy (25 schools
in 6 districts) and Speech Therapy (26 sites in 11
districts) for students. In addition, the Hospital
provided Audiology services in six schools. The
Hospital’s therapy outsourcing program serves
school districts in Westchester and Rockland
counties, and in 2011 provided approximately
20,276 therapy sessions.
• Last year, Blythedale successfully completed the
implementation of an Electronic Medical Record
• Blythedale has a rigorous program for continuous
quality assessment and improvement, and
a focus on best practices. In 2011, our bloodstream infection rate was close to zero, well
below the national rate. 81% of our patients were
discharged home.
In 2011, Blythedale’s researchers continued their comprehensive study of the efficacy of robotic therapy
in children. This endeavor – part of a study done in collaboration with MIT scientists – is the first
randomized controlled trial of upper-extremity robotic therapy in children with motor impairments from
cerebral palsy and other acquired brain injury. Participants have shown significant gains in muscle tone
and function following therapy with the elbow/shoulder and/or the wrist robots, and research staff are
preparing to begin lower-extremity studies.
2011 Highlights
• Major projects included ongoing research
studies on robotic-assisted therapy, and
continued collection and analysis of data
related to monitoring neurocognitive recovery
in TBI patients (QMOCS).
• The Speech Therapy Department embarked on
a feeding study, analyzing the effectiveness of
intensive-feeding therapy.
• Blythedale’s physical therapists are utilizing a
variety of technologies to assess outcomes and
benefits of various equipment for their patients.
Lite Gait provides partial body-weight support
so that patients who are not yet able to fully
bear weight can practice gait patterns. The
Balance Master is being used to study walking
velocity and check for safe walking speeds
(e.g., speed needed to get across a street
before the light changes) in patients. Gait Rite
is a mat that measures stride length and foot
fall, enabling therapists to help patients improve
efficiency and speed, and serves as an important
evaluation tool in selecting assistive devices.
• Through the generosity of a grant from the
Pedal-With-Pete Foundation, a research
collaborative dedicated to the study of roboticassisted therapy in pediatrics was established.
The collaborative network includes MIT; Riley
Hospital for Children; and Rancho Los Amigos
National Rehabilitation Center.
• Blythedale is also conducting a lower-extremity
study with Bambino Gesu in Rome, Italy;
a Ventilator Acquired Pneumonia study with
Franciscan Hospital in Boston; and a WeeFIM 9
pilot data collection with Uniform Data System
for Medical Rehabilitation.
• Research staff presented at several conferences,
including the 3rd Federal Interagency
Conference on TBI; the Annual Meeting of
the Child Neurology Society; the Annual
Meeting of the American Academy for
Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine;
and the 33rd Annual International Conference
of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and
Biology Society.

Teaching & Training
Advocacy
Education is an important component of the mission of Blythedale Children’s Hospital. Serving as a training
ground for the next generation of pediatric specialists, more than 100 colleges and universities throughout
the region rely on our Hospital to provide clinical training to scores of professional students in a wide
range of fields. Our staff serves as faculty at top colleges and universities, sharing their expertise in areas
including medicine, nursing, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy,
child life, social work and hospital administration.
Advocating on a federal, state and local level for programs that benefit children with special healthcare
needs is paramount to our mission. Blythedale is also committed to providing injury-prevention and
health-promotion services to minimize the incidence of accidents and disease among all children. We
continue to demonstrate our commitment to reducing the number of preventable injuries and deaths
among children, through our participation in numerous injury prevention-related activities. We provide
CPR training and car seat checks, and make presentations on bicycle and water safety at local health
fairs. Blythedale’s medical and clinical professionals serve as an important resource, speaking on a
wide range of children’s health topics to corporate groups, community organizations, and school and
parent groups.
Blythedale is also committed to educating parents to be competent caregivers, helping them every step of
the way as they grow into their new role as caregiver of a child with complex medical needs. In addition,
we are proud to serve as a vital resource to our community, offering programs tailored to every aspect of
child health.
2011 Highlights
• Thirty-five medical residents and fellows spent at
least a portion of their residencies at Blythedale
in 2011. These physicians were graduates from
the leading medical schools in the U.S. and
abroad, and completed rotations in Rehabilitation
Medicine, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and
Psychiatry. In addition to providing clinical training
experiences for 260 nurses in 2011, the Hospital
provided clinical internship opportunities to
students in a wide range of departments.
• Blythedale’s Pediatric Research Program provides
doctoral and master’s degree students with
opportunities to conduct their dissertations and
thesis projects in association with members of
Blythedale’s research staff. In 2011, this included a
doctoral candidate at the Ferkauf Graduate School
of Psychology, Yeshiva University, and a doctoral
candidate from New York Medical College.
4
• Blythedale’s physicians are required to show
evidence of continuing medical education on
a yearly basis. Formal teaching, in the form of
Grand Rounds, took place 16 times in 2011, and
was presented by expert physicians from our
major referring institutions, including New YorkPresbyterian Hospital, Maria Fareri Children’s
Hospital, Montefiore Medical Center, BronxLebanon Hospital Center, and NYU School of
Medicine (Rusk Institute and Langone Medical
Center). In addition, Blythedale physicians, nurse
practitioners and psychologists held twice-weekly
“lunch and learn” sessions for staff on topics
ranging from neonatal lung disease to burn
rehabilitation.
• Prior to the opening of the new inpatient building
in December 2011, staff went through extensive
training in the use of new, state-of-the-art
equipment and technology, including advanced
patient monitoring systems and automated
medication dispensing systems.
• In order to provide Hospital staff with the skills
needed to prevent or safely manage a crisis
situation, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training
for all staff was initiated. 50% of staff was trained
in 2011.
• In 2011, Blythedale continued its vital community
service as a certified Training Center for the
American Heart Association (AHA) in both
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and
Basic Life Support (BLS). In addition to bringing
these vital programs out into the community, the
Hospital offers a variety of courses on-site. In
2011, 4,023 people were trained in CPR, PALS
and first aid through Blythedale’s Training Center.
We have 120 instructors registered with our
Training Center.
• Thanks to a grant from The Dannon Company,
Inc., dietitians from Blythedale and Dannon
presented “Does What We Eat Really Matter?”
in May, and followed with “Healthy Eating on a
Budget” in October.
2011 Highlights
• In 2011, Blythedale worked actively with the
National Association of Children’s Hospitals
to advocate for the implementation of federal
healthcare reform so that it adequately
addresses the special health needs of
children. Hospital leadership is in regular
contact with Senators Schumer and Gillibrand,
Congresswomen Lowey and Hayworth
and Congressman Engel, who remain very
supportive and helpful on these and other issues
important to children, families and children’s
hospitals. Blythedale was also an active
participant in the NYS Coalition for Medically
Fragile Children as it advocated for New
York State Medicaid “redesign” policies that
recognize the unique needs of medically fragile
children and their families.
• Funded by a generous grant from Kohl’s
Department Stores, the Blythedale and Kohl’s
“Eat Well, Be Well” program teaches healthy
eating habits to children in kindergarten through
eighth grade by providing general nutrition
guidelines to students, parents and school
faculty. In 2011, the program reached more
than 16,000 students in 23 school districts,
bilingual materials were developed, and staff
was increased to meet the growing demand for
programming.
• Safe Kids Westchester/Blythedale Children’s
Hospital is the local coalition leader for the
Safe Kids USA campaign. In 2011, Blythedale
maintained two car-seat fitting stations (one
on-site and one at Fairview Fire Department),
and also trained and certified 26 Car Seat
Safety technicians.
• Blythedale presented an important Town
Hall meeting on “Student Athletes & Head
Injuries: Everything Parents, Coaches and
Kids Need to Know.” Dr. Chris Rackley and
Dr. Jay Selman, co-directors of Blythedale’s
Traumatic Brain Injury Program, were joined
by former NFL running back and Super Bowlchamp Dorsey Levens to discuss how to
recognize and manage a brain injury, as well
as new legislation surrounding brain injury
treatment.
• In October, Blythedale joined forces with Kohl’s
Cares for Kids, and the Westchester County
Department of Health, to celebrate National
Food Day – a nationwide initiative aimed at
inspiring adults and children to prepare and
serve healthy, sustainable, and affordable food.
Held at the County Center in White Plains,
nearly 1,000 people attended the event.

A teen emerges from a coma with his parents at his bedside…With the help of her occupational therapist, a seven-year old makes a
card for her grandmother, despite burns that limit her range of motion…An infant born prematurely begins ventilator weaning and
takes his first independent breath as his mother sighs in relief.
We are inspired by all of our patients, and every day become more devoted to providing them with every opportunity to dream,
aspire and achieve. Philanthropy is key to offering children the broad range of services to address their medical and rehabilitative
needs, and transform their dreams to reality.
While the first phase of our Capital Campaign concluded with the opening of our 56,000 square-foot replacement inpatient hospital
building last year, this project is far from over. Phase II, already underway, will advance our vision for a new Blythedale through
a renovation of the existing building to accommodate an expanded Day Hospital and Early Childhood Center, a new Center for
Assistive Technology and a new Center for Speech and Audiology.
In our current healthcare economic climate, the reality is that reimbursements alone cannot cover the full cost of care for a child with
extensive and complex medical needs. Blythedale treats patients regardless of financial ability and a staggering 70 percent of our
patients are Medicaid-dependent. The generosity of our friends and community fills in the critical gaps and allows Blythedale to
grow and develop an ever-broadening scope of services. In order to continue to bring our vision to reality, we need your support.
Join us as we help future generations of children to embark on their own journeys to claim their futures.
To find out more about giving opportunities at Blythedale, please visit our website at www.blythedale.org
or call Chief Development Officer Jane MacDonald at 914-831-2544.
