During this Lenten season we have
walked the road
of reconciliation and restoration of the
broken relationship with our God. This road leads us now to Jerusalem for the powerful
events of Holy Week. Beginning with Passion/Palm Sunday the celebratory sounds of
hosanna during the palm procession become cries for Christ’s crucifixion on Calvary. On
Maundy Thursday evening our humble walk continues as we gather in the sanctuary
remembering the upper room where Jesus washed his disciple’s feet and shared the last
supper. On Good Friday afternoon from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. we will keep vigil at the
cross of Christ. This will be a service where people can come and go. (You may, but do not
have to stay the whole three hours.) There will be time for quite reflective devotion and
Scripture reading. Stop by the church to linger in prayer or pause for personal self
examination at the foot of the cross. Our Good Friday observance continues at 7:00 p.m. as
we gather at the foot of the cross to reflect upon the seven last words of Christ. The powerful
story of Passion Week has yet to reach its peak, for on Easter the power of sin, death and the
devil is defeated with the proclamation, “He is Risen!” A Community Sunrise Service will be
held in conjunction with McCormick United Methodist Church at Baker Creek State Park
Pavilion beginning at 6:30 a.m. It is recommended you bring a flashlight because the service
will begin before dawn. Plan on participating and bringing a friend for worship during Holy
Week and Easter at Lutheran Church By The Lake:

This year at Lutheran Church By The Lake the participation in the Wednesday evening
suppers and worship was exceptional. I would like to thank all those who provided the
wonderful soups that were enjoyed by everyone!! A special word of gratitude goes out to the
presenters who reflected on their faith journey with the theme, "When Faith Turns Gray and
Silver." Pastors Walt Wist, Jan Setzler, Dusty Rhodes, Jack Snellgrove, and Sara Juengst
inspired and challenged us with their personal peaks and valleys. We praise God and thank
Jim Klausman, Linda Harris, Donna Irmis, Marcia Tarbet, and the choir for the wonderful
rendition of Holden Evening Prayer that made our Lenten worship so meaningful. All of us
who participated were richly blessed.

Our traditional Easter Egg Hunt will
take place following our 10:15 worship
service on Easter Sunday, April 5.
We will first have punch and cookies in
the Fellowship Hall then we will have
our Under 5 children/grandchildren go
out into the garden to look for eggs.
The other two groups, ages 6-12 and 13
and over will begin their hunt after the
little ones in the garden.
Please let us know how many children/grandchildren will be taking part in our
Easter Egg Hunt and what group they will be in by signing the bright pink
sheet on the table in the Narthex.
Don’t forget to attend Pastor Jim’s
Tuesday Bible Study that begins at
10:00 a.m. each Tuesday.

Quilt Workshop is now meeting twice a
month so come for a session, or an hour to
see what we are about.
Come pick up
something to sew at home or just help out at
the workshops.
A challenge has been made to create 100
quilts between April 1st and August 1st for the
Appalachian mountain children. These quilts
will be delivered during the month of August.

HOLY WEEK
The forty days of preparation for Easter came to a close on Palm Sunday. Palm
Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week which focuses on the passion of our Lord
Jesus. The mood of this day is a mixture of triumph and tragedy. We observe
both Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem as well as his death on the
cross.
You will note the parament color change from purple to red (the color of the
crucifixion). Palms will be used as part of the chancel enhancement, as well as
a procession of worshippers into the sanctuary led by the Minister.
Maundy Thursday recalls Jesus' example of loving service and his institution of
the eucharist during the Last Supper in the upper room. Maundy comes from
the Latin word mandatum which means command. It refers to Jesus' words at
the Last Supper, "I give you a new commandment, that you love one another,
just as I have loved you." Holy Communion will be celebrated and at the
conclusion, the altar will be stripped in preparation for the austerity of Good
Friday.
The name Good Friday was probably "God's Friday". The altar remains bare of
linens except for a black parament. We will observe a Service of Silence again
this year with a drop in and drop out meditation from Noon till 3 p.m. and an
evening service at 7 p.m.
Easter is always the first Sunday that follows the full moon right after the
Spring Equinox. Easter preparations are made with white paraments. The
Pascal candle which was extinguished during Lent will be relit.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OUTREACH PROGRAM:
The Good Shepherd Catholic Church has begun an outreachprogram to develop
connections with some of the needy residents of McCormick. Working with
community churches, they were able to provide a very nice luncheon in February with
entertainment and even door prizes for 60 residents. The committee in charge of the
outreach program would like to have someone from Lutheran Church by the Lake
represent our church at the organizational meetings (just a few) to help plan future
activities. Would you step forward and help? Their meeting will be on April 9 at 1:00
pm at the Life Center at Good Shepherd. Please consider representing our church on
this committee. Contact Gloria Bramble (391-5996 [email protected]) to volunteer
or for more information.
World Malaria Day is April 25, offering us an opportunity
to do something significant for the ELCA Malaria
Campaign. Five years ago we started this campaign,
dreamed big with our Lutheran companion churches and
partners, and set out to raise $15 million by 2015 for
programs to fight malaria. The time to make this dream a
reality is now.
Together, we have already raised more than 90 percent of
our goal. We are looking to you and members of this church
to help the ELCA Malaria Campaign reach the $15 million
mark.
Thanks to the faithful support of people like you, the ELCA
Malaria Campaign is currently at work with Lutheran
companion churches and partners in 13 African countries.
We have had great success, but we’re not done yet. We need
your support to reach our goal and ensure all of the malaria
programs will be fully funded.

church and millions of people around the world in
taking action? Please consider observing this day by taking
a special offering for the ELCA Malaria Campaign Sunday,
April 26, 2015. Special World Malaria Day resources will
help you activate your congregation in learning about
malaria and the ELCA Malaria Campaign.

MCCORMICK HELPING HANDS UNITED FOOD PANTRY
2015 FOOD DRIVE
“BUDDY CAN YOU SPARE A CAN”
As many of you know beginning January 1, the Food Pantry began a new food
drive campaign. We are asking members of LCBTL to participate in this
program by bringing a canned or boxed food item each week and place it in the
cart which will be in the Narthex. If items are brought during the week they
can be placed in the plastic container beneath the coat rack labeled Helping
Hands.
Specific items will be requested each month. Some items are nonfood such as
toilet paper and toiletry items which are also needed by the community. Please
keep this list handy. Each month a notice will be placed as a reminder in the
newsletter as well as in the Sunday bulletin.

WELCA Garage Sale - Saturday, May 9th
Attention all you pack rats out there! It is time to do your spring cleaning!
LCBTL will have a LARGE booth at the SLV garage sale on May 9 . This is
WELCA’s big fundraiser and we need your support. We will be receiving items
at the church starting May 3rd, after second service. It would be a huge help if
you could bring your items to the church on Mon. May 4th . All items will be
sorted and priced in the Church Fellowship Hall and then transported to the
SLV Recreation Center for the sale on Saturday.

kitchen items, craft items, jewelry, patio

and guy stuff! You name it, we need it! We
will not be accepting clothes, computers
or large TVs as they are too difficult to

All the monies collected will allow WELCA to continue their very important
projects throughout the coming year. Anything that is useable and cannot be
sold will be donated to Habitat, Helping Hands and McCormick Children’s
Home Store.

Ladies Retreat in May. There will be a box to

May 13 - WELCA Retreat at Hickory Knob State Park
from 9:30 – 3:00 p.m. Our speaker for the Retreat will be
Julie Jabaley, Executive Director of the Craddock Center in
Cherry Log, Georgia. The Craddock Center serves a region of 12,000
children and families in Southern Appalachia, a very poor area. Please sign up to
attend this very important retreat and to hear this amazing speaker.
On June 12 & 13 the WELCA South Carolina Conference will be held in
Lexington, SC. If you are interested in attending, please sign up as soon as
possible so arrangements can be made for lodging. Hope you can attend.
Conferences are a lot of fun and very interesting. Meet women from all over South
Carolina.
