TAC Life dergimizin beşinci sayısına hoş geldiniz!
Geçen sayılarda olduğu gibi, okulla ilgili haberlerin
derlendiği bu seçki, TAC’de 2013-2014 eğitim öğretim
yılının ilk döneminde, yani Eylül 2013 - Ocak 2014
arasında gerçekleşen etkinlikleri, öğrencilerimizin,
öğretmenlerimizin ve okul camiamızın başarı öykülerini
aktaran bir kayıt niteliğindedir. Umuyoruz ki okuyacağınız
sayfalarda sadece güzel anıları yeniden yaşamakla
kalmayacak, 'TAC hayatına' daha derinlemesine tanık olma
fırsatını da bulacaksınız.
Dergimizin konu aldığı TAC’de hayat evrilmeye ve 'benzersiz
mükemmeliyeti yansıtan, herkesin değer verdiği okul
olma' vizyonuna ulaşma yolunda ilerlemeye devam ediyor.
Yeni öğrenci yatakhanelerinin açılmasını bekleyen TAC,
1888’de başlayan uzun tarihinde son derece önemli bir
adım daha atıyor. Tarihi Stickler binasının çatı katında
kalan öğrenciler, bu değerli ve saygı duyulan mekâna elveda
diyerek yolun hemen karşısındaki, Sağlık ve Eğitim Vakfı’nın
üç yeni bina projesinin ikincisi olarak tamamlanan yeni
yatakhane tesislerine geçmeye hazırlanıyorlar. Yani, bir
kapı kapanırken diğeri açılıyor ve öğrencilerin hayatlarına
yeni bir boyut kazandırıyor. Aynı şekilde, dergimiz de
içerdiği makaleler ve fotoğraflar aracılığıyla TAC’nin
kampüs ve öğrenci hayatına yeni kapılar açıyor, içgörüler
sunuyor. TAC Life dergisinin bu sayısına katkıda bulunan
birçok grup ve kişiye içten teşekkürlerimizi sunuyoruz. Bu
sayımızın her yeni sayfasında, 'TAC’de Hayat'ın kalitesini
yükseltmek amaçlı ortak çalışmalarımızın heyecanını
duyumsayacak, kurulan bağların başka bir örneğini bulacak,
her fotoğraf karesinde ayrı bir insan çeşitliliği ve etkinlikle
tanışacaksınız.

DEAR READER,
Welcome to this fifth issue of TAC Life! As with the past issues,
this collection of articles serves as a record, chronicling
multiple TAC events, activities, and accomplishments of
our students, faculty, and school community which have
taken place during the first semester of the 2013-2014
school year, from September 2013 through January 2014.
We hope you enjoy looking through these pages which will
not only bring back good memories and but also provide the
reader with a more in-depth appreciation of “life at TAC.”
Life at TAC continues to evolve and move ahead in its quest
to reach the vision of becoming a school of unparalleled
excellence, valued by all. With the pending opening of the
new student dormitories, TAC takes a dramatic further
step forward in its long history which began in 1888.
Those students currently residing on the top floor of the
historical Stickler building, are now faced with bidding
this cherished and revered location a fond farewell
and together with the other boarding students, moving
into the new dormitory facilities just across the street,
completed as the second of the SEV Foundation’s three
new building projects. As one door closes, another opens,
adding a new dimension to the lives of students. So also with
these articles and pictures to be found in this issue, new
insights are opened into TAC’s campus and student life.
Sincere thanks are expressed to the many groups and
individuals who have contributed articles to this issue of
“TAC Life.” This publication offers a historical snapshot of
the diversity of people, activities, and events which together
promote a common bond of enthusiasm and cooperation as
we work together to enrich the quality of 'Life at TAC.'

arsus Amerikan Koleji’nde 20132014 eğitim öğretim yılı, 9 Eylül
2013 Pazartesi günü Saygı Duruşu ve
İstiklal Marşı ile açıldı. Okulun yeni öğretim
yılı açılış törenine okulumuzun öğrencileri,
öğretmenleri ve idarecilerinin yanı sıra
velilerimiz, okulumuzun eski mezunları,
Mezunlar Derneği Başkanı Dr. Ali Cerrahoğlu,
Sağlık ve Eğitim Vakfı Liseler Eğitim
Koordinatörü Mr. Whitman Shepard da
katıldı. Açılış konuşmalarını Tarsus Okulları
Direktörü Charles Hanna, Okul Müdürü Tekin
Baransel ve Sağlık ve Eğitim Vakfı Liseler
Eğitim Koordinatörü Whitman Shepard yaptı.
12. sınıf öğrencilerinden Ayça Dost’un
İngilizce ve Şafak Çelik’in Türkçe yaptığı
açılış konuşmasında şunlar söylendi: “TAC,
öğrencilerini akademik yönde geliştiren bir
okul olmakla beraber, bünyesindeki kişilere
dostluğu, paylaşmayı, birlik olmayı ve en
önemlisi, toplum içinde bir birey olmayı
öğreten bir ailedir. Bu nedenledir ki bu
okuldan mezun olduğunuzda, çantanızdaki
kitaplardan öğrendiklerinizle beraber, sizi
hayata karşı donanımlı ve güçlü yapacak
olan çok değerli kazanımlar elde etmiş
olacaksınız.” TAC Öğrenci Birliği Başkanı
Burak Bedük ise, Öğrenci Birliği olarak
yeni dönemde yapılacak projelerden
bahsedip Hazırlık Sınıfı öğrencilerine,
“Hoş geldiniz!” dedi. Daha sonra Tarsus
Amerikan Koleji Müdürü Tekin Baransel,
okulumuzun akademik kadrosuna bu yıl
katılan yeni öğretmenlerin tanıtımını
yaptı. Okul Çelengi’nin Atatürk Köşesi’ne
taşınması ve bırakılmasından sonra tören
sona erdi. Tarsus Amerikan Koleji ailesi
olarak, tüm öğrenci ve velilerimize başarılı,
sağlıklı bir eğitim öğretim yılı diliyoruz.
The new academic year’s opening
ceremony at TAC started with a flag
tribute and the National Anthem. The
participants of the ceremony were
the students in Prep-12, teachers and
administrators, parents, TAC graduates,
Chair of TAC Alumni Association and
Mr. Whitman Shepard, Education
Coordinator for SEV American High
Schools who joined as the guest speaker.
The opening remarks were given by
Headmaster Charles Hanna, Principal
Tekin Baransel, and Mr. Whitman Shepard.
TAC’s grade 12 students Ayça Dost
and Şafak Çelik in their bilingual
message to all students, stressed that
“TAC is a school which does not only
improve student academically,
but also teaches each new member
about friendship, sharing and unity
and how to be an individual within a
society. It is for this reason that by the
time you graduate, you will have gained
very important assets beyond what you
have learned in your textbooks, which
will prepare you for life at large”.
TAC Student Council President Burak
Bedük, after welcoming new prep students,
talked about the projects they will
undertake this year as the Student Council.
The ceremony, during which the new
teachers were introduced by Tekin
Baransel, concluded with the placing of
the school wreath on the Atatürk corner.
As the TAC family, we wish everyone a
successful and a rewarding academic year.

u yıl da 10 Kasım günü saat
dokuzu beş geçe, tüm Türkiye’de
olduğu gibi okulumuzda da
hayat durdu. onun yokluğunu andığımız
ve hüzünlendiğimiz bu günde, Onun
varlığına bir kez daha inandık. Kalbimiz
her zamankinden fazla onunlaydı… Tarsus
Amerikan Koleji öğrencileri, Atamızın
fikirleri ile halen aramızda olduğunu ve
Atatürk isminin bizlere neler ifade ettiğini
bir kez daha kararlılıkla dile getirdi.

10 Kasım 2013 Pazar günü saat 09.00’da
başlayan ve sunuculuğunu 11. sınıf IB
öğrencilerimiz Beste Uçan ve Yusuf
Gölbaşı’nın yaptığı anma törenimiz,
09.05’te Atamız için Saygı Duruşu ve
İstiklal Marşı ile devam etti. Sunucumuz
Beste Uçan’ın Atamız ile ilgili yaptığı
konuşma sonrasında öğrencilerimiz Tuğba
Öz ve Yarkın Yılmaz, sırası ile ‘10 Kasım
Türküsü’ ve ‘Mustafa Kemal’in Gök Yazıları’
isimli şiirleri seslendirdiler. Okulumuz
Edebiyat Bölümü öğretmenlerinden
Önder Şit ve üç öğrencimizin sahneye
koyduğu “S(On) Kasım” isimli kısa tiyatro
gösterisinden sonra program, TAC 1945
yılı mezunu, değerli büyüğümüz, Turhan
Uygur Beyefendi’nin Atatürk anılarıyla
ilgili yapmış olduğu konuşma ile devam
etti. Konuşma sonrasında okulumuz Fen
Bilimleri Bölümü’nün hazırladığı sinevizyon
gösterisi ile programımız sona erdi.
Program sonrasında, öğrencilerimiz
ve konuklarımız, araştırmacı gazeteci
Haldun Okdemir’in Atatürk Fotoğrafları
arşivinden seçilen fotoğraflardan oluşan ve
8 Kasım 2013 tarihinden itibaren Student
Lounge’ta gösterime sunulmaya başlanan
sergiyi gezerek okuldan ayrıldılar. Bu anma
programının hazırlanmasında emeği geçen
tüm öğretmenlerimize ve öğrencilerimize
teşekkür ediyor, büyük önder Mustafa
Kemal Atatürk’ü saygıyla anıyoruz.
On Sunday 10 November, Tarsus
American College students, faculty,
and staff joined together for the
commemoration ceremony in honor of
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Even as people
gathered that morning, thoughts about
his ideas, contributions, and what the
name “Ataturk” means for the entire
nation were in the hearts and minds
of all present. Then in the auditorium,
at 9:05, as in all over the country,
sirens sounded and life stopped for a
period of silence and remembrance. We
strongly felt Ataturk’s presence even
on a day when we mourn his absence.
The commemoration ceremony was
moderated by grade 11 students Beste
Uçan and Yusuf Gölbaşı and began with a
period of silence followed by the national
anthem. Following the remarks by Beste
on the significance of remembering
Atatürk, Tuğba Öz and Yarkın Yılmaz
recited the poems titled “10 Kasım
Türküsü” and “Mustafa Kemal’in Gök
Yazıları”. This was followed by a short
drama performance titled “S(On) Kasım”
organized by Turkish literature teacher
Önder Şit and three students. The
remarks by Mr. Turhan Uygur, a 1945
TAC graduate who shared his thoughts
and some memoirs about Atatürk, was
the highlight of the day and brought
Atatürk to life. The ceremony ended with
video footage about Atatürk prepared
by the TAC Science Department.
Following the ceremony, participants
had the opportunity to visit a special
exhibition of photographs about the
life of Ataturk selected from the
collection compiled by the journalistresearcher Haldun Okdemir. The
exhibition was held in TAC’s student
lounge and had been formally opened
already on Friday, 8 November.
TAC thanks all teachers and students
who contributed to the assembly
on this meaningful day, as we paid
our deepest respects to the Founder
of the Republic of Turkey.

önüllerin Cumhuriyet aşkı ile
buluştuğu bu günde, Atamızın
bize yaşattığı coşku ve heyecanı
tüm okul bir yürek olup içimizde en güzel
hislerimizde var ettik. Cumhuriyet’in 90.
yılında törenimize katılan TAC ailesinin,
oluşturulan mizansen ve duyarlılık ile
ruhlarına işleyen ‘o gün’, tekrar tekrar
yaşandı. Çukurova Üniversitesi Devlet
Konservatuvarı Oda Orkestrası’nın eşlik
ettiği ve okulumuz müzik öğretmeni Aslı
Son’un yönettiği okul koromuz, birbirinden
güzel marşlar ile izleyicileri etkiledi. Saygı
Duruşu ve İstiklal Marşı’nın ardından Okul
Müdürümüz Tekin Baransel’in konuşması
programa ayrı bir anlam ve renk kattı.
“Şimdi söz sırası Atatürk’ün Cumhuriyeti
emanet ettiği bizlerde,” diyerek andımızın
seslendirildiği, Türk gencine, Atatürk
gençliğine örnek teşkil eden okulumuz
öğrencisi Yarkın Yılmaz’ın, Atamıza
yazdığı duygu yüklü mektubun okunduğu,
Kuvayı Milliye şiir dramatizasyonunun
yapıldığı, çeşitli şiirlerin seslendirildiği ve
Atatürk’ün karakalem posterinin takdim
edildiği, Cumhuriyet'e yakışır, müthiş bir
kutlama yaşandı. Onuncu Yıl Marşı’nın
hep bir ağızdan ve coşkuyla söylenmesinin
ardından program sona erdi. Programın
hazırlanmasında ve sunumunda emeği
geçen Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı öğretmenlerine,
Görsel Sanatlar öğretmenimiz Tülay
Okan’a, Müzik öğretmenimiz Aslı
Son’a, Çukurova Üniversitesi Devlet
Konservatuvarı Müdürü Mustafa Bayık’a,
Müdür Yardımcısı Serdar Büyükedes’e
ve görev alan tüm öğrencilerimize
katkılarından dolayı teşekkür ederiz.
On Friday, 25 November, the TAC
community was united in remembering
once again with respect the Republic
proclaimed by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on
29 October 1923. In the 90th Anniversary
of the declaration of the Turkish
Republic, TAC community reenacted that
days of struggle and the proud stance
of the nation in 1920s. The audience
of TAC students and teachers was first
greeted by the TAC student chorus
accompanied by Çukurova University
State Conservatory Chamber Orchestra,
and conducted by Aslı Son, TAC’s music
teacher. Principal Tekin Bey’s remarks,
following the Moment of Silence and
the National Anthem, added meaning
and significance to the assembly. The
ceremony also featured the voicing
of the national oath, opened by the
announcement “now the floor is ours,
Turkish youth to whom the Republic is
entrusted”, reading of the letter written
to Ataturk by TAC student Yarkın
Yılmaz, who exemplified the Turkish
youth committed to Ataturk ideals,
the dramatization of a poem about the
Kuvayı Milliye (National Forces), reading
of various poems, and presentation of
Atatürk’s charcoal drawing. Overall,
the celebration represented the best
efforts of a modern, progressive Turkish
generation to keep the fire of modernism
alive. The assembly concluded by singing
in unison the Tenth Anniversary anthem.

Son, Mr. Mustafa Bayık, the Manager
and Mr. Serdar Büyükedes, Assistant
Manager of the Çukurova University’s
State Conservatory, as well as all TAC
students for their contributions.

125 yıldır Türkiye’ye liderler yetiştiren
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji (TAC) ve 1997
yılında eğitime başlayan Tarsus SEV
İlkokulu, Sağlık ve Eğitim Vakfı’nın (SEV)
Tarsus’ta başlattığı inşaat projesi ile var olan
kampüse ek olarak yapılan yeni yerleşkesiyle
büyüyor ve öğrencilerine sunduğu
ayrıcalıklı eğitim ortamının kalitesini
artırıyor. Yeni kampüs ile yatılılık kapasitesi
140’a çıkan Tarsus Amerikan Koleji,
Türkiye’nin her yerinden daha fazla sayıda
öğrenciyi kaliteli eğitimle buluşturacak.
Yeni kampüs, geniş yatakhaneler, modern
yerleşim birimleri ve çağdaş teknolojik
olanaklarla donatılarak, hem bugünün
hem de gelecekteki öğrencilerin tüm
ihtiyaçlarına cevap verecek kaliteli bir
eğitim ortamı sunuyor. Asırlık TAC
kampüsünün hemen karşısında yer alan yeni
yerleşim birimi, spor salonu, yemekhane,
600 kişilik konferans salonu ve kütüphane
olarak restore edilen tarihi Sadık Paşa
binası ile yeni öğretim yılına başlangıç yaptı.
Yerleşkedeki yeni binadan ikisi, Tarsus SEV
İlköğretim Okulu ve Tarsus Amerikan Koleji
erkek ve kız yatakhanesi olarak kullanılacak.
Törende açılış konuşmasını yapan Tarsus
Okulları Direktörü Charles C. Hanna,
“Okullarımıza yeni eklenen bu binalar
Tarsus SEV İlköğretim Okulu için ve
TAC’nin yatılı öğrencilerine verilen eğitimin
büyük ölçüde geliştirilmesini sağlayacak,
Tarsus Okulları tarihinin bu yeni sayfasında
öğrencilere yeni bir hayat sunacak, onlara
çok büyük fırsatlar yaratacaktır,” dedi.
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nin Tarsus’un
zengin tarihi ve kültürel dokusuyla 125
yıldır bütünleştiğini belirten SEV Yönetim
Kurulu Başkanı Ceyda Aydede, “Tarsus
Amerikan Koleji, bu güzel belde ile birlikte,
Türkiye’nin her yerinden öğrencileri
kucaklamaya ve onları geleceğe hazırlamaya
devam edecektir. Yeni kampüsümüz,
Tarsus American College, one of the longest established educational institutions in
Turkey, along with Tarsus SEV Elementary
School are expanding their facilities to meet
the educational demands of both the academic and extra-curricular programs. Located on
a plot of land adjacent to the current campuses, construction of the buildings started
in 2012 and will add an additional 11.000
square meters of technologically state-ofthe-art equipped buildings to the current
facilities. Two of the three new building
complexes were inaugurated with a Grand
Opening ceremony on Saturday 21 September which now adds a new Elementary School
for grades K-4 as well as a new Boarding
Facility for 140 TAC high school students. A
third complex which will house an auditorium, a gymnasium and a cafeteria, will be
ready to welcome students within the next
six months. The opening ceremony was attended by city protocol members, Health and
Education representatives, as well as many
guests from the school and local community.
The comments made by the guests who
provided remarks at the opening ceremony characterized different aspects
regarding the significance of this project
which was funded and guided by the
Health and Education Foundation.

“Good schools have good buildings, but
what essentially makes them good schools
is the quality of education provided”. Prof.
Dr. İlter Turan, Chair of the Trustees of
the Foundation, in his remarks also stated
that the “cooperation and support on the
part of all stakeholders is important, if
in the future, Tarsus Schools will remain
as a school which will build admiration
in the wider community each time the
diploma which bears its name is seen.

Turan, “İleride de, sadece diplomadaki
kurumun ismine bakıp, Tarsus’tan
mezun olunmasına hayranlık duyulması
için tüm paydaşlarımızın işbirliği ve
desteğinin devamı önemlidir,” dedi.
İki çocuğunun da bu okuldan mezun
olduğunu belirten Mersin Milletvekili Vahap
Seçer, Türkiye’de eğitimin en öncelikli
konu olduğunu ve gelecekte topluma yön
verecek çocukların iyi yetiştirilmesinin
her şeyden önemli olduğunu söyledi.

Tarsus Kaymakamı Hasan Göç ise, 125 yıllık
bir müessese olan Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’ni
bu 125 yıl içinde heyecan ve fedakarlığından
hiçbir şey kaybetmeden çalıştığını belirtti.
Eğitim kurumlarının kurumsallaşmasına
dikkat çeken Göç, “Buradaki kurumsallık
anlayışının, ülkemizde özellikle eğitim
alanındaki tüm kurumlarda artmasını
temenni ediyorum,” diye konuştu.

Mr. Vahap Seçer, a Member of the Parliament from Mersin, who mentioned that
both of his children are Tarsus graduates, emphasized “the vital importance
of education in Turkey, and the role it
plays in raising leaders of the future.”
Tarsus Governor Hasan Göç expressed
recognition for the Tarsus American College, a school which has been continuing
its enthusiasm and altruistic efforts for
125 years “as in the very first day”. Göç,
who touched on the theme of “corporateness” wished that “more schools in Turkey
adopted this corporate, standardized approach thus improving education quality”.
The Grand Opening Ceremony continued
with remarks by Ezgi Gül Adanır, TAC’s
boarding IB students and Su Özkul, Tarsus Elementary Grade 3 student, who shared their
sentiments on their newly opened dormitory
and schools, respectively. It was concluded
by the ribbon-cutting and the tour of both
buildings, and an inauguration reception.

AC’de Öğretmenler Günü kutlamaları, öğrencileri,
öğretmenleri, emekli öğretmenleri, velileri ve
TAC Mezunlar Derneği temsilcilerini bir dizi
eğlenceli etkinlikte bir araya getirdi. 22 Kasım
2013 Cuma sabahı, TAC Öğrenci Birliği’nin
öğretmenler için hazırladığı kahvaltı ve kısa konser ile süslendi.
Öğleden sonra TAC ve Tarsus SEV İlköğretim Okulu’nun Okul
Aile Birlikleri, TAC Mezunlar Derneği temsilcileri ve emekli
öğretmenlerin de katıldığı bir resepsiyonda öğretmenlerin bu
özel gününü kutladılar. Tarsus Okulları öğretmenlerinin akşam
Adana Şato Restoran’da düzenlenen geleneksel ‘Öğretmen Günü
Yemeği’nde özel bir menü ve hareketli müzikler eşliğinde eğlenceli
bir kapanış yaptıkları 2013 yılı Öğretmenler Günü kutlamaları,
TAC’nin camia ruhunu daha da pekiştirdi. Tarsus Amerikan Koleji
olarak tüm öğretmenlerin Öğretmenler Günü'nü kutluyoruz.
The celebration of Teachers’ Day at TAC brought students,
teachers, retired faculty, parents, and representatives of
TAC’s Alumni Association together for a variety of enjoyable
activities. The day started with a breakfast sponsored by the
TAC Student Council for teachers and students, complete
with a short concert. In the afternoon, representatives
of the TAC and SEV Elementary parent councils
welcomed all teachers of both schools for a reception
which was also joined by TAC alumni representative and
retired teachers. The evening’s traditional Teachers’
Day dinner was held at the Şato Restaurant in Adana
which provided a special menu accompanied by music
with lively rhythms. Teachers’ Day 2013 definitely
contributed to the sense of community which TAC
enjoys. TAC wishes all teachers a happy Teachers’ Day!

ünya Felsefe Günü, 19 Kasım
2013’te okulumuzda coşkuyla
kutlandı. Kutlama etkinliği çerçevesinde, okulun çeşitli yerlerine “Dünya
Felsefe Günü” ile ilgili projeler yapılarak ve ünlü felsefeciler ile ilgili posterler
asılarak renkli bir pano oluşturuldu.
Oditoryum'da hazırlanan programda ise,
‘felsefenin’ insan yaşamını, değerlerini, amaçlarını sorgulayan, varlığı, bütün
olarak ele alan, temelde insanın sorgulayabilme yeteneğine dayanan, insanlığı
yönlendiren, sonsuz bir konuşma alanı
olması yönleri üzerinde duruldu. Filozof-

göre özgürlük, herhangi bir kısıtlamaya, zorlamaya bağlı olmaksızın, düşünme ve ya davranma, herhangi bir şarta bağlı
olmama durumu, her türlü dış etkiden bağımsız
olarak insanın kendi iradesine, kendi düşüncesine dayanarak karar vermesi durumu, hürriyet.Bana göre ise özgürlüğün en kısa ve açıklayıcı tanımı, “Sana ne?” sorusudur. Steve Jobs’ın
da dediği gibi, “Başkalarının dogmalarının esiri
olmayın ve kalabalıkların gürültüsünün sizin iç sesinizi bastırmasına izin vermeyin. Bu
dünyada herkes, her kurum, her politikacı, her
din adamı, her komşu, her arkadaşınız, her öğretmen, istisnasız herkes bizi değiştirmek için
çaba gösteriyor. Artık onlara, “Sana ne!” demenin zamanı gelmedi mi? Özgürlük bize çizilen
sınırların içerisinde serbestçe koşmak değildir,

Peki, bu tanımlamalara bakarak gerçekten özgür olduğumuzu iddia edebilir miyiz? Yaşadığımız ülkenin, sahip olduğumuz aile kültürünün
ve mensubu olduğumuz dinin ahlak kuralları ve
bakış açıları düşünülürse, eylemlerimizi gerçekleştirirken özgür olduğumuzu söylemek pek
doğru olmaz. Çünkü bütün bu unsurlar özgürlüğümüzün etrafına çizilen sınırlardır ve sınırları çizilmiş bir şeye ne kadar özgürlük denilebilir? En basit örnek son zamanlarda gündeme
oturan kız-erkek ilişkileri meselesidir. Şahsen
ben, çocukluğumda bir erkek ve bir kızın arkadaş olamayacağı anlayışıyla yetiştirildim.
Büyüklerim erkeklerle fazla yakınlaşmamamı
öğütler dururdu hep. Sürekli şu sözleri duyardım: “Erkeklerin yanında düzgün otur, onlarla
yalnız kalma, hareketlerine dikkat et," vs. Daha
da büyüdükçe, işlerin boyutu biraz değişti, bir
gün arkadaşlarımla oturup, gülüp eğlenirken
aldığım tepki şu oldu: “Erkeklerin yanında kahkaha atma, caiz değildir.” Düşünebiliyor musunuz, yanımda erkek var diye gülmeyecekmişim.
Aile ve din baskısından sonra bir adım daha
çıktı karşımıza, hükümet baskısı. “Yahu kardeşim, sana ne, istediğim insanlarla istediğim gibi
yaşarım. İster meşru ister gayrimeşru, ahlak
bekçiliğimi yapmak size mi düştü?” Bu zihniyet kadınları seks objesi, erkekleri de yürüyen
seks makineleri haline getirmekten başka bir
şey değildir. Bir düşünün, belki de insanlığın
sahip olduğu en masum duygulardan biri olan
arkadaşlığın bile tartışıldığı, baskı altında olduğu bir ülkede, dünyada yaşıyorsunuz, ahlaki
eylemlerinizde özgür olduğunuzu iddia etmek
mümkün müdür? Aileniz muhafazakâr, dininiz
baskıcı, hükümetiniz diktatörken eylemlerinizi
hayata geçirmekte ne kadar özgür olabilirsiniz?
Özgürlük sınırlarınız dış etmenler tarafından
çizilirken ne kadar mutlu olabilirsiniz?
Bu dünyada faşist olabilirsiniz, ırkçı olabilirsiniz, seksist, dinci, milliyetçi, sübyancı, homofobik, sadist, sosyopat, psikopat, terörist olabilirsiniz ama özgür olmaya hakkınız yoktur. Çünkü
özgür olduğunuzda çevreniz sizi örnek alabilir
ve toplumsal bilinçlenmeden rahatsız olacak
insan sayısı azımsanacak bir miktar değildir.
Günümüz dünyasında, insanlar bize gülecek,
dalga geçecek, tersleyecek, kızacak diye yorum
yapmaya bile korkar hale geldik. Hareketlerimizi, “Ben ne yapmak istiyorum?” süzgecinden
değil de, “Başkaları ne düşünür?” süzgecinden
geçirmeye başladık. İnsanlığın hangi dönemin-
de başkalarının hakkımızda olan düşünceleri,
kendi hissetlerimizin önüne geçmeye başladı?
Hangi evresinde kendi karakterlerimizin mükemmel olduğuna karar verdik de başkalarını
eleştirmeye başladık? Ne zamandan beri herkesin sahip olduğu, herkeste farklı olan zevkler
tartışılacak bir konu haline geldi? Ne zamandan
beri insanların doğal haklarına, özel hayatlarına
karışıp özgürlük sınırlarını aşıyor insanoğlu?
Hayatımızın her anında karşılaştığımız
bu sorunlarla başlar işte özgürlük kısıtlamaları, gelişir, toplumsal baskıya dönüşür ve en
sonunda bir bakmışsınız birileri yatak odanıza
kadar girmiş, çocuk yapmanız için sizi teşvik
edip, kadınların bedeni hakkında karar verip
kürtajı yasaklamış. Bu konunun kesinlikle
siyasetle alakası yoktur, bu, insan psikolojisindeki boşluklardan kaynaklanan toplumsal
bir insan hakları sorunudur. O zaman sormak
isterler “Yahu sana ne?” diye ama yapmazlar,
yapamazlar, çünkü korkarlar baskıdan, eleştiriden. İşte o zaman içinden çıkılmaz bir paradoksun içine sıkışıp kalırsınız. Sonra özgürlük
için her bağırdığınızda sesinizi kısanların sayısı artar, sanki bunu yapmaya, sizi kısıtlamaya hakları varmış gibi, o zaman fark edersiniz
artık özgürlük diye bir kavram kalmamıştır,
sadece tanımlar ve hayalleri kalmıştır geriye.
O da özgürlük duygusuyla doğmuş olan ama
baskılar altında sıkışıp kalmış bir insan için ne
kadar tatmin edici olabilirse…

is overbearing and your government
is a dictator? How happy can you be
when the boundaries of your freedom
is being drawn by external factors?
According to a definition, “freedom”
is the state of thinking or behaving
without any limitation or force, the state
of being able to decide at your own will,
independent of any external influence. In
my opinion, the most straightforward and
descriptive definition is the statement
“it is not your business”. Steve Jobs
advises that “your time is limited, don’t
waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t
be trapped by dogma, which is living
the result of other people’s thinking.
Don’t let the noise of other opinions
drown your own inner voice. And most
important, have the courage to follow
your heart and intuition, they somehow
already know what you truly want to
become. Everything else is secondary.”
Freedom is not running freely within
the boundaris that are drawn, it is the
act of drawing those boundaries.
Then when we look at these definitions,
can we really claim that we are free? It
would not be true to say that we have
complete freedom, when we consider
the moral codes and rules of the country
in which we live, of our family, and
of our religion, which in fact are the
boundaries drawn around our “freedom”.
How can you call someone which has
these boundaries a “free person”? The
most basic example is the male-female
relations, which has also made its way
into the agenda today. I personally was
raised with the belief that a girl and a
boy could not be friends. My elders would
always advise me not to be too close with
boys. I would always hear from them
that I should be careful about how I sit
and act around boys, that I should “avoid
being alone with them”. When I am a little
older, things have taken on a different
proportion, and at the end of a day that
I was sitting with my friends and having
fun, the advice was “not to laugh around
boys”. Can you imagine, just because I
have a male friend I was not supposed
to laugh! Alongside family pressure
and religious pressure, we experience
pressure from the government. ”I live
and act as I want, with people that I
want. Call it illegitimate or immoral, who
gives you the right to act as my moral
police?” This mentality is nothing more
that seeing women as sex objects and
men as walking sex machines. Think for
a moment: you are living in a country, in
a world where one of the most innocent
kind of relationship, a friendship is
under scrutiny. Is it possible to say then
that you are free in your moral choices?
How free can your actions be when your
family is conservative, your religion
In this world, you can be a fascist, a
racist, a sexist, a fundamentalist, a
nationalist, a pedophile, a homophobic,
a sadist, a sociopath, a psychopath, a
terrorist, but you have no right to be free.
Because when you are truly free, then
those around you might want to follow
your example, and then heaven forbid!
You cannot underestimate the number
of people who would be disturbed of
such a social awareness/awakening.
In today’s world, we are afraid even to
comment to avoid being laughed at, to
be mocked, to be snapped at, to be angry
at. We have started to use the filter of
“what would others think?” rather than
“what do I want to do?”. In which period
of humanity others’ thoughs about us
started to override our own feelings?
In what era of history have we decided
that we are too perfect and that we
are entitled to criticize others? Since
when the different and unique tastes
of individuals become an issue for
discussion? Since when human beings
can interfere in the inherent rights
of others, and their private lives?
Limitations on freedom start with these
problems which we experience in every
aspect of our lives. Then they turn into
social pressure, and in the end, you
see that someone dares to enter your
bedroom, starts to encourage you to have
kids, decides about woman body and
bans abortion. This issue does not have
anything to do with politics, it is an issue
of social human rights which feels free to
use the gaps in human psychology. Then
you want to ask “It is not your business!”
but they cannot, because they are afraid
of pressure, of criticism. Then you end up
being stuck in an inextricable paradox.
Then, each time you shout about freedom
the number of those who would like to
drown your voice increases, as if they
have the right to do so. That is when you
realize that there is no freedom left,
just some definitions and dreams of
it remain…however satisfactory they
can be for an individual who was born
with the sense of freedom but ended up
being stuck in the midst of pressures.

gezimiz, Nâzım Hikmet Sergisi ile de
belleklerde ayrı bir keyif bıraktı.
Hem üniversiteleri yerinde görerek
bilgi edinen, hem de kültürel anlamda
birçok kazanım elde eden öğrencilerimiz
güzel anılar ile evlerine döndüler.
On 24-25 October, thirty of TAC’s grade
11 students visited various universities in
Ankara. In the trip, organized by the TAC
Counseling Department, students were
joined by Mr. Mutlu Kader, the assistant
principal of the grade level, counselor Mr.
Sinan Öz, and their mathematics teachers
Mr. Ferdi Ateşin and Ms. Enise Peker. The
trip was intended to benefit particularly
this group of students who are at the
point of finalizing their career goals.
The trip, which started by visiting
the campus of TOBB (The Union of
Chambers and Commodity Exchanges)
University, continued with a visit
to the METU (Middle East Technical
University) campus. TAC students also
visited Anıtkabir, Atatürk mausoleum,
to pay their deep respect to the nation’s
leader before the 90th anniversary
celebrations of the Turkish Republic.
The following morning Hacettepe
University and Bilkent University
were visited. Being a part of the Nazım
Hikmet photo exhibition was another
cultural highlight of the trip.
In conlusion, receiving first hand and
onsite information about the university
programs and faculties proved to be
highly rewarding experience for TAC
students. The visit to Ankara will be
a memorable one both in terms of the
high value of information gained, and
the cultural experiences collected.

Being selected as the Student of the Month is a traditional, eagerly awaited component
of being a student at TAC. The efforts and performance of all students are taken into
consideration for this monthly recognition award. Students who are nominated by
the faculty are then selected based on their efforts “to be better than their best”, to be
open to self improvement and, all in all, to demonstrate the qualities of an exemplary
student and individual.

Günü’nü düzenledi. Bu yıl, yurtdışı
eğitimi tanıtıcı etkinlikler, geçen yıla kıyasla
daha kapsamlı idi. TAC öğrencileri, sabah
üniversite temsilcilerinin katıldığı fuara,
öğleden sonra ise bilgilendirici sunumlara katılarak dopdolu bir gün geçirdiler.

Etkinlik kapsamında ABD, Kanada ve
Avrupa’dan 23 üniversitenin temsilcisi
okula gelerek akademik programlarını
tanıttılar. Hazırlık, 9. ve 10. sınıflardaki
tüm öğrencilerle 11. ve 12. sınıftan davetli
öğrenciler, sabahki fuar süresince üniversite
temsilcileri ile görüşme şansı buldular.
Öğleden sonra ise öğrenciler, 'İngiltere’de
Eğitim’, ‘Kanada’da Eğitim’, ‘ABD’de Eğitim’,
‘ABD’de Finansal Yardım ve Burslar’, ‘ABD
Başvuru Sürecinde Makale Nasıl Yazılır?’
gibi başlıklardaki sunumları dinlediler.
Etkinliğin son derece verimli geçtiği
konusunda hemfikir olan üniversite
temsilcileri, öğrencilerimizle tanışmaktan
büyük mutluluk duyduklarını ifade
ettiler. Öğrencilerin sorularının çok iyi
düşünülmüş olduğunu söyleyen üniversite
temsilcileri, TAC öğrencilerinin yurtdışında
akademik ve sosyal hayat konusunda büyük
merak sergilediklerini de belirttiler.
TAC öğrencileri ve öğretmenleri de, ‘Yurtdışı
Eğitim Günü’nün TAC camiasını yurtdışında
yüksek eğitim konusunda eğitmeye
yönelik değerli bir fırsat olarak görüyorlar.

isteyen öğrencilere, listelerinde belki de
On Friday, October 4, Tarsus American
College hosted the 2013 Overseas
Education Day for its students. This
year’s event was expanded from
last year’s activities to include
an overseas education fair in the
morning and informational breakout
sessions in the afternoon.
Twenty-three universities from all over
the US, Canada, and Europe came to
the school to promote their academic
programs. All students in prep, grades 9
and 10, and invited students from grades
11 and 12 had the opportunity to meet
with the university representatives over
the course of the morning university
fair. In the afternoon, students
heard presentations on topics such
as Study in the UK, Study in Canada,
Study in the US, US Financial Aid
and Scholarships, How to Write a US
Admission’s Essay, and many more.
The university representatives all
said they found the event to be very
productive, and they all expressed
great pleasure in meeting our students.
Many also said they found our students
very thoughtful in their questions
and very curious about the academic
and social life at their universities.
Students and teachers also expressed the
value of such event in helping to educate
the TAC community regarding overseas
university education. The morning
university fair gave the opportunity for
students to learn more about universities
that they may not have first considered
as a choice for their education, and

IELTS ÖĞRETMEN SEMİNERİ TAC’DE
TAC kampüsü, 16 Kasım 2013 Cumartesi günü öğretmenlere yönelik ve tam gün süren
bir IELTS (Uluslararası İngilizce Dil Test Sistemi) eğitim seminerine ev sahipliği yaptı. Seminerin katılımcıları arasında Adana’dan davet edilen öğretmenler, TAC İngilizce
Bölümü'nün yeni üyeleri ve TAC Fen Bilimleri Bölümü öğretmenleri de bulunuyordu.
Uzun yıllardır öğretmenlere IELTS sınavının incelikleri hakkında eğitim veren Diane
Stewart, son derece dinamik ve ilginç bir sunum yürüterek öğretmenlerin ilgisini gün
boyunca canlı tutmayı başardı.
IELTS sınavı son iki yıldır Amerika üniversitelerinde de kullanılıyor. Türkiye’de ise
sınav, öğrencilerin yurtdışındaki üniversitelere başvuruda gerekli dil puanlarını almalarını sağlıyor veya Türkiye’deki üniversitelerde, başarılı olan öğrencilerin hazırlık
sınıfını atlamalarına yardımcı oluyor. TAC’de 11. sınıf düzeyindeki her öğrenci, Mayıs
ayında IELTS sınavına girecek. Diane Stewart, Nisan ayında tekrar TAC’ye gelerek, bu
sefer öğrencilerimizle sınava hazırlık çalışmaları yapacak.
TAC HOSTS IELTS SEMINAR
On Saturday 16th November, a full day IELTS (International English Language Testing
System) training seminar was held on campus. Participants included invited teachers
from Adana, new members of the TAC English department, and most of the TAC Science
faculty.

The seminar was run by Diane Stewart, who kept things lively and interesting with her
years of experience in instructing teachers on the ins and outs of the IELTS exam.
The IELTS exam has been in place within the American colleges for the last two years.
It is used to help students obtain the required language exam scores to enter foreign
universities , or to skip the prep year in Turkish universities. All the 11th grade students in
TAC will now take the IELTS exam in May, and Diane will be back in April to give them a
series of preparation workshops.
We look forward to her visiting us again!

oluşan “Atamızı Anıyoruz” sergisi
ile aydınlandı. Araştırmacı gazeteci
Haldun Okdemir’in derlediği sergide 45 adet fotoğraf yer aldı. Atamızın
yurdun dört bir yanından çekilmiş
fotoğrafları ile bu vatan üzerindeki
emeği, inancı, insanına ve yurduna
bağlılığı, zarafeti tekrar gözler önüne serildi. Ulu Önderimizi saygı ve
sevgiyle anıyoruz.

TAC’s student lounge was home
to a photo exhibition on Friday 8
November, to launch the commerative weekend for Ataturk. In the
exhibition, compiled by the journalist Haldun Okdemir, forty five
photos of Ataturk were displayed.
The photos coming from the many
places in Turkey were visual reminders of Atatürk’s strong belief
in and commitment to Turkey, as
well as the grace and modernity
he modeled. TAC community remembers Atatürk with a renewed
respect and commitment to his
ideas.

TAC History and Archeology Club
aims to equip students with skills and
experience so that they can view the
world with a historical perspective,
enrich their social, artistic and
cultural development, improve their
interpretative and analysis skills, and
gain a historical awareness through
trips to historical places of interest.
The club aims to meet these objectives
by organizing trips to historical
sites in and outside of Turkey, to
museums and archeological sites, to
raise awareness on our archeological
culture and heritage, and to work
on recent social, cultural and local
history through oral history projects.
Another activity of the TAC History and
Archeology Club is to keep a record of
oral history projects by archiving audio
and video footage of people who are
interviewed, screen documentaries and
historical movies, organize presentations,
preparing news bulletins, slideshows
regarding these activities, their outcomes,
and activities planned for the future.

KULÜBÜ
TAC El Sanatları Kulübü, öğrencilerimizin toplumsal sanata katkılarını, yaratıcılığını ve el becerilerini geliştirmek
amacıyla kurulmuştur. Ayrıca, kulüpte
yapılacak olan çalışmaların sergilenmesinden sonra satışından elde edilecek
gelir ile bir sosyal sorumluluk projesine
katkı yapılmaktadır. Kulübümüzde, öğrencilerimizle vitray, ahşap boyama, takı
tasarımı ve ebru sanatı gibi çalışmalar
yapılmaktadır.

CLUB
TAC Handicrafts Club was established to improve student skills in and
their contribution to handicrafts, as
a vital component of local culture.
It also serves an outreach purpose
since the funds raised by the sales of
craftwork is used to support community service projects. The most popular activities which actively involves
students in the club are glass painting, wood painting, jewelry design
and marbling art.

AC Fotoğraf Kulübü çalışmalarında,
web sitemize yüklenen fotolardan
kulüp danışmanlarınca beğenilenler, lisedeki fotoğraf panomuzda öğrencilerin
görebileceği şekilde rumuzlarıyla beraber
asılı bulunuyor. Danışmanlığını Engin
Noyan, Anissa Sharief ve Michael Smith’in
yaptıkları kulüpte, ayrıca yerli yabancı usta
fotoğrafçıların sunumlarına yer verilmekte,
öğrencilerimizin fotoğrafları tematik ve teknik açılardan yorumlanmaktadır. Temalar,
öğrencilerimiz tarafından kulüp saati içeri-
sinde oybirliğiyle belirleniyor. Bu temalardan biri de ‘Doğa’ idi. Diğer temalarımız ise,
“Gölge”, “5 kare 1 öykü”… TAC Fotoğraf kulübümüzün öğrencileri tarafından belirlenen
temalara dair çekilen fotoğraflar arasında,
Naz Çakar, Selen Terzi, Damla Söğütlü, Fem
Yüksel ve Belit Karali’nin çalışmaları, gösterim hakkı kazandı. Fotoğraf Kulübümüz ayrıca şu an, “Öğrenci Gözüyle Doğa ve Çevre” ve
“Sokak Hayvanları” yarışmalarına hazırlanıyor. Önümüzdeki kulüp saatlerimizde ise
civar tarihi yerler gezilip fotoğraflanacak.

As part of the activities of the TAC
Photography Club photos, out of
those which are taken and uploaded
by students on the TAC website, are
shortlisted by the club advisors,
Engin Noyan, Anissa Sharief and
Michael Smith to be displayed to
the wider audience. During the
club periods, students also make
presentations about the prominent
Turkish and international
photo artists. Photos taken by
TAC students are discussed
with a thematic and technical
perspective. The themes, which
are decided by students in the
club, have recently been “Nature”,
“Shadow” and “5 Snapshots, 1
Story”. Among the many photos
taken by TAC Photography Club’s
students, those by Naz Çakar,
Selen Terzi, Damla Söğütlü, Fem
Yüksel and Belit Karaali were
elected for the photo exhibition.
The current project of the
club is to prepare for the local
photo contests titled “Nature
and Environment As Seen by A
Student” and “Stray Animals”. In
the coming club periods, the group
will organize photography trips
to historical places of interest.

TAC ECHO is one of the longest standing
traditions of the Tarsus American College.
Awards in music contests, conscientious
compositions, catchy tunes of ECHO songs
heard on the radio, all helped improve the
popularity of the band among the TAC
community and a much wider public alike.

TAC ECHO Band of Grade 12 took the stage, this time to mark the Teachers’ Day, and to
present the gift of music to teachers. With a repertoire of their own compositions, ECHO
concert provided a refreshing start to this important day, following the breakfast organized
by the TAC Student Council. TAC community thanks all band members for this memorable

AC öğrencilerinin
‘sanat tarihi bilgilerine
sahip olabilmelerini
ve sanat hakkında
konuşabilmelerini’
hedefleyen, sanat tarihi bilgilerinin
ürüne dönüştürüldüğü ve sergilendiği
süreç, öğrencilerin içindeki yeteneği
ortaya çıkarmasına olanak sağlıyor.
Gotik dönemin mimarisinin,
yazınının, müziğinin, giyim tarzını ve
günümüze etkilerinin incelendiği sanat
derslerimizde, Erez Büyükyılmaz’ın
‘konstrüksiyon’ becerisi, serginin
hazırlık aşamasında bile tüm dikkatleri
üzerine çekti. Görsel Sanatlar
dersinde başladığı, atık kâğıtları
rulolar haline getirip iskeletini Gotik
dönemin sembollerinden oluşturduğu
tüyler ürperten yarasalar dikkat
çekti. Ekin Büyükyılmaz’ın, maket
yapımındaki müthiş titizliği ve özeni
bize geleceğin başarılı mimar ya da
mühendislerinden olacağı haberini
şimdiden veriyor. Erez Büyükyılmaz’ı
çalışmalarından dolayı kutluyoruz.
This annual exhibition, which
provides an opportunity to cultivate
knowledge and appreciation of
arts at TAC and to transform
knowledge into an artistic
product, helps bring out artistic
potentials in TAC students.
An example can be taken from the
work by Erez Büyükyılmaz. His
skills in constructing models in
art classes where the architecture,
literature, music, dress of Gothic
period and its impact on the world
today are studied, have already
received interest from peers at
the preparation stage towards
the Gothic Art Exhibition. Using
rolls of waste paper, he formed
the skeletal framework of bats,
one of the symbols of the Gothic
period which, upon completion,
produced the intended sense of
“eerieness” on its viewers. His great
meticulousness in building the
model, with the support of Ekin
Büyükyılmaz, heralds a successful
future career in architecture or
engineering. TAC congratulates
Erez for his successful artwork.

DİLŞAH ÖZBAY (DÖ): Gotik sergisi
açmanızın özel bir nedeni var mı?
TÜLAY OKAN (TO): Resim dersi, sadece resim yapmak değildir. Öğrencilerimizin sanatın
tüm dallarıyla ilgilenmeleri ve bu konuda bilgi
sahibi olmalarını istiyorum. Gotik sergisi; çünkü bu dönem dersimizde işlediğimiz bir konular
içinde yer alıyor. Bunun dışında sadece resim
değil müzik, mimari alanları da dersimizin içinde o dönemi vurgulayarak işlemeye çalışıyoruz.

DÖ: Serginizin ana motifleri nelerdir?
TO: Vurgulamak istediğimiz en önemli nokta
her sanat döneminin günümüze nasıl aktarılmış olduğudur. Sanat dalları hakkında bilgi
veriyoruz. Bu bilgilerle öğrencilerimiz popüler
sanat içindeki geçmiş dönemi tanıyabiliyor.
1970’den sonra birçok müzik grubunun gotik
dönemi vurgulayan kıyafetler, saç renkleri,
sahne düzenleri ile dönemin özellikleri yeniden
ortaya çıkmış oldu. Post-modern bir çağda gotik
dönem izleri rock gruplarında kendini gösteriyor. Biz öğrencilerimizle bu dönemin tüm
özelliklerini çalışıp günümüzü daha iyi anlayabileceğimizi düşünüyoruz. Siyah, tül, çapraz
bağlama, karamsarlık duygusunu verebileceğimiz tüm malzemeler sergimizde kullanılmıştır. ‘
DÖ: Serginizin hedeflediğiniz amaçlara
ulaştığını düşünüyor musunuz?
TO: Kesinlikle düşünüyorum çünkü öğrenciler
hem üretim aşamasında hem de sergileme aşamasında oldukça heyecanlıydılar. Misyonumuzun sanat eğitimiyle beraber sanat terminolojisini de öğrencilerimize kazandırmak olduğunu
ve buradaki tüm öğrencilerin üretene ve üretilmiş olana saygı duymasını öğretmeye çalışıyoruz. Sergiyi gezen tüm öğrencilerden aldığımız
tepkiler bu misyonun gerçekleşmiş olduğunu
bize gösteriyor. Bu da istediğimiz hedeflerin
en başında geliyor. Hedeflere ulaşmak sadece
bizim çabamızla olmuyor. Okul idaresinin de
bize verdiği tüm destek için huzurunuzda teşekkür etmek istiyorum. Bu sergi bir ekip işidir.
DÖ: Öğrencilerinizin çalışmaları hakkında
biraz bize bilgi veriri misiniz?
TO: İşlediğimiz her sınıf seviyesinde yaptığımız
sanat döneminin tüm özellikleri hakkında bilgi
sahibi olmalarını sağlamak. Üretebilme yeteneği olmasa bile var olan güzellikleri anlama ve
paylaşma zevkini oluşturmak. Üçüncüsü yapılan gotik dönem sergimize, hem müzik bölümü
öğrencileri hem de resim bölümü öğrencileri
katkı sağladı. Tüm öğrencilerimiz çok çalıştı.
Özellikle Erez Büyükyılmaz’ın atık kağıtları
değerlendirerek yaptığı gotik döneme ait balta,
yarasa, gemi gibi maketlerin oldukça etkileyici
olduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Hazırlık sınıfı öğrencilerin kıyafet ve makyajlarıyla yaşantı yoluyla
öğrenmeye katkı sağladıklarını görebiliriz.
DÖ: Bu tür sanat etkinlikleri okulumuzda
bulunan öğrencileri nasıl etkilemekte?
EREZ BÜYÜKYILMAZ (EB): Okulumuzda spor ve sanat etkinliklerinin az olduğunu düşünüyorum. Bence öğrencilerin
kendilerini dışa vurmaları için seçeneklerin artması gerek. Gotik sergisiyle kendi
iç dünyamı yansıttığımı düşünüyorum.
GÜNEŞ SEZER (GS): Diğer okullardan farklı
etkinlikler yapmak elbette ki okulumuzda
bulunan öğrencileri olumlu yönde etkiliyor.
Her zaman bir gotik sergisi görme ve içinde yer
alma şansı bulamayız. Okulumuz bu anlamda oldukça
başarılı. Öğrencilerin genel kültür başta olmakla beraber estetik algılarını da etkilediğini düşünüyorum.
DÖ: Gotik dönem sergisi yaratıcılığınızı
nasıl etkiledi?
EB: Öğretmenimiz bize bu dönem hakkında oldukça fazla bilgi verdi. Bizler bu bilgiler ışığında neler
yapabiliriz diye düşündük. Dönemin başlıca ögelerini
oluşturmak gerekiyordu. Ben de atık kağıtlarla o
dönemi yansıtmak istedim. Gotik dönem sergisinde hayal gücümü kullanarak üç adet yarasa biri,
biri kısa iki tane balta ve Viking gemisi yaptım.
GS: Dönem hakkında oldukça kapsamlı bir bilgi
birikimimiz oldu ve bununla beraber yaratıcılığımızı da etkilemiş oldu. Günümüzde halen kullanılan
alanları fark edip biz neler yapabiliriz diye düşününce işte bu güzel sergi ortaya çıktı. Ben ve arkadaşlarım o dönemi yansıtan kıyafet ve makyajla sergiye
görsel bir canlılık getirdiğimizi düşünüyorum.
DÖ: Yaşadığımız dönemde gotik dönemin
izlerini bulabiliyor muyuz?
EB: Fazlasıyla var özellikle rock gruplarının kıyafet ve saç modelleri kullandıkları motifler,
renkler geçmişten gelen sanatın izlerini taşıdığını düşünüyorum. Diğer dönemlerle ilgili sergiler olacağını düşünüyorum arkadaşlarımın bu
sergiden sonra daha ilgili olacaklar sanatta.
GS: Elbette bulabiliyorum benim dinlediğim müzik
genellikle rock tarzında ya da modern poptur. Bu
müzik dallarının da özellikle kullanıldığını daha fazla
fark ettim. Ayrıca vitray çalışmalarının dönemini
öğrendim. Siyah kıyafet ve tül kullanımının, dönemi en çok yansıtan kadın tarzı olduğunu, hem o
dönemde hem de modern çağda görmüş olduk..

our exhibition such as the color of black,
tulle, cross knotting, and other tools
which help create the sense of eeriness.
DÖ: Do you think that this exhibition met
the defined objectives?
At the opening of the Gothic Art
Exhibition on Wednesday 15 January
2014, TAC’s grade 9 student Dilşah
Özbay conducted an interview with TAC
Visual Arts Teacher Tülay Okan, TAC’s
grade 11 student Erez Büyükyılmaz,
and Prep student Güneş Sezer.
DİLŞAH ÖZBAY: Is there a special reason
for opening a “gothic art” exhibition?
TÜLAY OKAN: The art lesson is not
just about drawing and painting. I want
my students to be interested and wellinformed in all branches of the arts.
The gothic exhibition is organized as
a showcase of our art curriculum for
the first semester. In addition to art,
we also cover music, and architecture
influenced by the Gothic period.
DÖ: What are the main motifs of your
exhibition?
TO: The main thing we concentrate on
is how each artistic period or trend
has influenced contemporary arts. We
lecture about the branches of art which
enable students to recognize “the old in
the new” or in contemporary period. The
characteristics of the gothic period have
resurfaced after 1970 with the clothes,
hair colors, and stage sets used by many
music bands. In post-modern age, the
traces of the gothic period can be seen in
rock groups. I think that a study of this
particular period would render a deeper
understanding of today’s world and popular
TO: I really do, and it could be easily seen
from the keenness and excitement of
students at the production and display
stages. Our mission is to cultivate a feeling
of respect among students towards
the producers and the product of the
artistic process as well as to teach the
artistic periods and the terminology.
The feedback received from the student
visitors indicates that this mission
has been accomplished. This certainly
was made possible by collective effort
and I appreciate the support of the
school administration in providing
this opportunity for TAC students.
DÖ: Can you give us brief information
about the projects of your students?
TO: In each grade level we are trying to
cover a curriculum which features all
characteristics of a specific artistic trend.
We try to cultivate an appreciation of the
arts in each student, even when they lack
the skills to produce artwork. Students
who take music, in addition to those who
are art students, contributed greatly to the
third year of the gothic art exhibition. All
students worked very hard, including Erez
Büyükyılmaz who created particiularly
impresive artwork such as a model axe,
a bat, and ships made of recycled paper,
all of which represent the gothic period.
We can see the effects on experiential
learning by seeing the prep students
dressed up in period clothes and make-up.
certainly has a positive impact and is an
advantage. We would not be able to be
involved in a gothic art exhibition every day,
for which our school should be recognized,
both for broadening the general culture
and aesthetic perspectives of students.
DÖ: How did the gothic art exhibition
affect your creativity?
EB: Our art teacher provided us with
significant information about this period.
We thought about what we can produce
in light of this information. We needed to
form the main components of the period.
I wanted to do this by using waste paper.
I produced three bats, two axes and one
Viking ship using my imgination, all of which
were displayed during th gothic exhibition.
GS: We have received comprehensive
lectures about the period, which had
in impact on our creativity. Realizing
the modern-day inspirations from the
gothic period and pondering what we
can do to display such inpirations, we
came up with this beautiful exhibition.
I think that my friends and I, and the
way we were dressed contributed as a
visual enhancement for the exhibit.
DÖ: Can you see the traces of the gothic
period in the modern era?
EB: Definitely, especially the clothes, hairdos
and motifs used by rock bands. I believe
that after this exhibition, more students
will be encouraged to produce artwork.
GS: I too can see them, most simply in
the rock music and modern pop music
that I listen to. I also found out about the
famous glasswork which became one of the
staples of that period, as well as the most
commonly used motifs of black and tulle.
DÖ: How do students benefit from
these kinds of artistic events?
EREZ BÜYÜKYILMAZ: I think that sports
and arts events in our school are not
organized as regularly as it should. There
should be more opportunities for students
to bring out their artistic talents. I believe
that the gothic art exhibition provided
me a chance to reflect my inner world.
GÜNEŞ SEZER: Initiating activities

The 2013 Leadership Conference
hosted by the İzmir American Collegiate
Institute on 28-29-30 November was
an opportunity for students of TAC,
ACI and UAA to be involved in various
experiences around leadership.
In the conference, TAC was represented
by grade 9 students Asya Tokbey, Laçin
Onuk and Yiğit Berkmen, grade 10
students Ali Can Gürsoy, Neslişah Boro,
Ezgi Ergel, Efe İzgialp, and grade 11
students Ayhan Ateşok, Yarkın Yılmaz,
Bade Turgut and Burak Bedük from
grade 12, the President of the TAC
Student Council. The event started on
the Thursday evening with the guest
school students having dinner with Mr.
Whitman Shepard, the Foundation’s
Education Coordinator of , as well as the
directors of Üsküdar American Academy
and İzmir American Colleagiate Institute,
Eric Trujillo and Todd Cuddington. On
Friday morning, following breakfast,
the students attended the leadership
training coordinated by Mr. Jaki Baruh,
an ACI 2000 graduate. The leadership

yapılan kahvaltı ve doğa yürüyüşü ile
program sona erdi. Çoğunluğunu üç
okulun öğrenci birliği üyesi öğrencilerinin
oluşturduğu gruplar, program boyunca
takım çalışmasının esaslarını ve iyi bir
liderde bulunması gereken vasıfları, aktif
olarak katıldıkları örnek olay çalışması
ile pekiştirmiş olup, program boyunca
çok güzel arkadaşlıklar geliştirdiler.

Over these two days, the groups who are
comprised of members of student councils
from three sister schools, have actively
developed teambuilding and leadership skills.
They found out more about principles
of groupwork and characteristics of
effective leaders through working on
case scenerios. Good friendships were
also formed during the conference.

Üniversitesi öğrencisi Can Çelikyılmaz, Manchester Üniversitesi'nde okumakta
olan Çağlayan Can; TAC 2013 mezunlarından halen British Columbia Üniversitesi'nde okuyan Berfuğ Apaydın ve Aylin Senem Pişkin ve İtalya'daki Bocconi Üniversitesi'nde eğitimini sürdüren Gülşen Seçen idi. Amacı öğrencilerimize yurtdışında eğitimin nasıl bir deneyim olduğunu daha yakından tanıtmak olan etkinlikte,
TAC öğrencileri mezunlara yurtdışında yaşam ve yüksek öğrenim hakkında sorular
sorma fırsatı da buldular. 7. ve 8. ders saatlerinde gerçekleşen panele, davetli 11 ve
12. sınıf öğrencileri katıldılar. TAC öğrencilerinden en çok gelen sorular, IB diploma programı dersleri ve üniversite eğitimi üzerindeki etkileri, yurtdışında bir üniversite seçme ve başvuru yapma süreci ile TAC'deki son yılları için tavsiyeler oldu.
OVERSEAS ALUMNI PANEL FROM TAC GRADUATES
On Monday, December 23, Tarsus American College hosted an overseas alumni
event. Velat Kiliç, 2012 TAC graduate and current student at Brown University; Can
Çelikyılmaz, 2012 TAC graduate and current student at University of British Columbia,
Çalayan Can; 2012 TAC graduate and current student the University of Manchester;
Berfuğ Apaydın and Aylin Senem Pişkin, 2013 graduates and current students at the
University of British Columbia; and Gülşen Seçen, 2013 graduate and current student
at the University of Bocconi in Italy, presented on our alumni panel. The goal of this
event was to give broad exposure of what it is like to attend a university overseas and
give students the opportunity to ask questions of our alumni student panel about life
and learning overseas. During 7th and 8th lesson, the panel presented to interested
grade 11 & 12 students. The current students discussed issues regarding IB diploma
classes and its impact on university education, advice on applying and choosing an
overseas university, and asked for words of wisdom in their final years at TAC.

the 90th Anniversary of the Turkish
Republic was the grand-size TACBOOK
page displayed on Unity’s interior
walls. The page featured comments
and thoughts of TAC students about
this important day. Like this one,
by TAC’s art teacher Tülay Okan:
“It is wonderful to share the quotes
by Atatürk on our TACBOOK wall and
be reminded of his greatness once
more with remarks from students.
I am eternally indebted to him, for
we can live in land where call our
homeland, we have right to free
education, the right to vote and be
elected, for we are able to wear the
kinds of clothes as we wish, and for
the many other values he added to
our lives today. I am also grateful that
I am the part of a legacy inherited
by a leader who modeled the world’s
leaders with his rhetorical skills,
foresightedness, intellectualism,
intelligence, and integrity.”

Adana Amerikan Konsolosluğu, 13 Kasım 2013 günü Eğitim Haftası nedeniyle bir kutlamaya ev sahipliği yaptı. Adana Mersin ve Gaziantep illerindeki okullardan öğrenci, öğretmen ve okul müdürlerinin davet edildiği
bu resepsiyon son derece canlı geçti. Farklı okullardan katılan kişiler hem
birbirleriyle hem de Adana Amerikan Konsülü Mr. John Espinoza ile tanışma fırsatı buldular.
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji öğrencilerini temsilen resepsiyona katılan, zarafeti ve hoş sohbeti ile göz dolduran Bade Turgut, Model Birleşmiş Milletler Kulübü’nde Başkan olarak edindiği becerileri, etkinliğe katılan birçok
öğrenci ile iletişiminde sergiledi.

A celebration of Education Week was hosted by the U.S. Consulate in Adana. Students, teachers, and school heads from schools in
Adana, Mersin and Gaziantep were invited to a lively reception and had the opportunity to get to know one another as well as meet Mr.
John L. Espinoza, the U.S. Consul to Adana.
Ms. Bade Turgut, the student representative for TAC, was elegant and well-spoken throughout the evening and used skills she has
developed as MUN President to make connections with many students who participated in the event.
She was joined by Ms. Ciara Johnson, English teacher and Prep Dean, and Mr. Charles Hanna, TAC’s Headmaster.

çok erken yaşlarda, hatta
okul çağında da görülmeye
başlandı. Okullarda takip ettiğimiz yüksek
tansiyon hastası çocuklarımız var. Bundan
sonraki dönemde, bu konu, öncelikli olarak
okul sağlığı problemleri arasına girmeye
aday. Aynı şekilde, ‘Tip 2 Diyabet’ diye
adlandırdığımız ve yine orta yaşlarda
başlamasına alışkın olduğumuz ‘erişkin tipi
şeker hastalığını’ da gençlerde daha sık görür
olduk. Çocuklukta gelişen yüksek tansiyon
veya obezite, erişkin olduklarında da büyük
ölçüde devam ettiği için de çok önem taşıyor.
Tüm bunların temel nedeni ‘yaşam tarzı’.
Artık çocuklarımız için gün boyu koşup
oynamak, terlemek, kaslarını çokça kullanıp
kalori yakmak anlamına gelen, sokaklarda
koşuşturduğumuz günler geride kaldı.
Sokaklar hem daha tehlikeli olduğu için
biz izin vermiyoruz onlara, hem de evdeki
televizyon, bilgisayar, akıllı telefon, oyun
konsolları gibi teknolojinin müthiş ürünleri
çok daha cazip geliyor çocuklarımıza.
Üstelik, bu teknoloji harikaları ile zaman
geçirirken, hiç durmadan atıştırdıkları
bol kalorili ve yağlı besinler de cabası.
Yüksek çalışma temposu nedeniyle,
çocuklara az zaman ayırabilmenin getirdiği
suçluluk duygusuyla, anne ve babaların
verdikleri bol harçlıkla, çok daha kolay
ulaşılabilen yiyecekler de eklenince,
obezite oranlarımız belli gruplarda
dünya ortalamasını yakalayıp aştı bile.

Aşırı tuz alımı da yüksek tansiyon için
çok önemli bir risk faktörü. Dünya Sağlık
Örgütü, Türkiye’de günlük tuz alımının
5 gramın altında olmasını öneriyor.
Ülkemizde tüketilen tuz miktarı bunun 3
katından fazla olup 18 gram seviyesinde.
Ekmek, turşu, salamura ve hazır gıdalar
ile sofrada yemeğe eklenen tuz bu artıştan
sorumlu. Vücudumuz, organlarımız,
gün boyunca bu fazla tuzu vücuttan
atabilmek için uğraşıp duruyor.
Belli bir süre bunu başarabiliyor ama
sonrasında bu fazla tuzun da etkisiyle
damarlarımızda dolaşan kanın basıncı
istenen ve kabul edilen sınırları önce
zorluyor, sonra da aşıyor. Uzun vadede kan
basıncının yüksekliği hemen hemen tüm

and neurological disorders.
The blood pressure values in children
are not expressed in standard numbers
as in adults, but in percentages, based
on the age and height. A range of 90-95
percent among their peers points to
a borderline hypertension, and if this
percentage is higher than 95%, the
child is diagnosed to have hypertension.
Advice for preventing hypertension:

Hypertension used to be known as a
middle-aged disease. Unfortunately,
it is now a prevalent health risk seen
in earlier ages, even at school age.
There are children who suffer from
hypertension in schools. Another
interesting fact is, the prevalence
of adult type diabetes called Type
2 diabetes which is becoming more
prevalent among young people.
Hypertension and obesity which
develop in childhood hold special
importance since both, to a great
extent, continue into adulthood.
The reason for all this is lifestyle.
The days where children played
We tend to deny them this lifestyle,
both because streets are dangerous
and because their technological toys
such as a TV, computer, smartphone,
and game consoles are much more
appealing. A further concern is the
tempting calorie-rich, fatty food items
they consume whilst playing with these
toys. These foods are always accessible
and supplied with the large amount
of pocket money received from the
parents which is the currency version
of the feeling of guilt for “working all
the time and not spending much time
with the children”. The obesity levels in
Turkey have already caught up with the
global average and even exceeded it.
High consumption of salt is another
recipe for disaster, leading to
hypertension. The World Health
Organization recommends a daily
salt consumption of below 5 grams. In
Turkey, the actual amount consumed is
more than three times, about 18 grams.
This increase is caused by food items
such as bread, pickles, brined food,
frozen food and salt added to meals.
Throughout the day, our body tries
to discharge this excess amount of
salt. Although it can complete the
process, this excess salt first forces
the pressure limit on the blood flowing
- When shopping at the supermarket,
look at the product labels and
pick those items which contain
lower amounts of salt.
- Encourage your child to consume
more vegetables and fruit, high fiber
and low fat food items instead of
packaged and processed food.
- Remove the salt shaker
from your meal tables.
- Maintain a balanced and healthy
diet as it is important to prevent
obesity, since extra weight would
increase the blood pressure.
- Limit the amount of time you
spend watching TV and using the
computer, which are called sedentary
activities, to two hours per day.
- Encourage your child to be
involved in physical activities for
at least 30-60 minutes per day.
- Activities such as cycling, hiking in
nature, both of which can be done easily
as a family, affect the family dynamics
positively and improve cardiovascular
health by increasing physical activity.
Each of us have a unique role in
preventing obesity and high blood
pressure which are among the major
health hazards of today. As the
medical unit of TAC, we are pleased
to receive the support of parents in
student-based trainings and medical
initiatives taken by our colleagues.
We should continue such initiatives in
order to support our children in their
lifetime pursuit of a healthy life, and
help them avoid chronic diseases.

20. TIMUN CONFERENCE
TAC, Üsküdar Amerikan Koleji’nde yapılan 20. TIMUN Konferansı’nda Almanya delegasyonunu temsil etmekten gurur
duymuştur. Küresel siyasetin en önemli aktörlerinden biri
olan bir ülkeyi temsil etmemiz dolayısıyla MUN Kulübü öğrencileri oldukça yoğun bir hazırlık ve araştırma süreci geçirdiler. Öğretmenleri Günseli Yüksel ile yaptıkları tüm okul sonrası çalışmaların ödülü ise, konferanstaki başarıları ve ÜAA’da
çok iyi vakit geçirmeleri oldu.
TAC participated in the 20th annual session of the MUN at ÜAA.
TAC was proud to be the delegation of Germany at UAA’s 20th
annual TIMUN conference in December. It meant a great deal of
preparation and research beforehand, as we were respresenting
one of the most important players on the world’s political
stage. All the after schools sessions were worth it, though, and
our students, accompanied by MUN advisor Günseli Yüksel,
performed very well and enjoyed their time at ÜAA immensely.

Karacaoğlan, nicknamed as a “Turkish Bard” who lived in the
17th century Anatolia, was commemorated by TAC teachers and
students on a special event in Tarsus.
17. yüzyılda yaşamış olan, Türk âşık edebiyatının büyük ozanı
Karacaoğlan’ı TAC öğretmenleri ve öğrencileri unutmadı.
Tarsus Belediyesi tarafından düzenlenen ve geleneksel hale
getirilen ‘Uluslararası 12. Karacaoğlan Şelale Şiir Akşamları’nda, TAC öğrencileri ve Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü öğretmenleri de yer aldı. Şair Yağmur Tunalı’nın ödül aldığı bu
güzel şiir akşamında, öğrencilerimiz aynı coğrafyanın seslerini farklı ağızlardan duydular. Orta Asya Türk devletlerinden
katılan şair, ozan ve sanatçılar, sazları, türküleri ve şiirleri
ile katılımcılara doyumsuz bir gece yaşattı. Gecenin sonunda
TAC öğrencileri ve Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü öğretmenleri, Azerbaycan Devlet Televizyonu’na küçük bir röportaj verip
toplu halde fotoğraf çektirdiler .
A group of TAC students and Turkish literature department teachers attended the 12th traditional “International Karacaoğlan
Poetry Evenings” organized by the Tarsus Municipality. This enjoyable evening of Karacaoğlan poems, during which poet/author Yağmur Tunalı was presented an award, the students experienced an opportunity to hear the voices from the same region
as expressed by different contemporary poets and were treated
to a literary appreciation which grew out of their homeland.
The event included guests from the Central Asian Turkish states, who read poems, played their native string instruments, and
shared their folk songs with the audience. At the end of the evening, the TAC group gave a short interview to the national TV
of Azerbaijan and made the night memorable by taking a group
photo.

KUTLAMASI
4 Ekim 2013 tarihinde, yemekhanede Almanya’daydı; Geleneksel 4. TAC Oktoberfest’i kutladı. Yemekhanemiz tamamen Almanya’daki gibi süslendi. Öğrenciler, bu sayede, kültürel açıdan
neler yaşandığını, neler yendiğini (sosis, patates salatası, patatesli mücver ve berliner), neler içildiğini (elma suyu soda - Apfelschörle) tanımış oldular. Alman halk müziği (Deutsche Volksmusik) eşliğinde eğlenirken, geleneksel kıyafetlerinden oluşan
maketlerle de hatıra resimleri çektirdiler.

TAC'DE FRANSIZ RÜZGÂRI!
4 Aralık 2013 Çarşamba günü, öğle saatinde yemekhaneye giren
öğrencileri Zafer Takı’nın (Arc de Triomphe) bir maketi karşıladı. İletişimi yüz yüze sağlayıp Fransızca’yı etkin bir şekilde
kullandırmak, kültürlerarası farklılıkları paylaşmayı öğretmek,
sahip olunan becerileri geliştirmek ve başka bir ülkeyi tanıtmak
amacıyla, okulumuzda Fransız Günü düzenlendi. Etkinlikte,
Fransız mutfağının örnek yemeklerinden soğan çorbası, nisuaz
salatası ve krem karamelin de dahil olduğu bir menü hazırlandı.
Fransız müziği ve Fransa’dan görsellerinin de eşlik ettiği öğlen
yemeği ile öğrencilerimizin sanki Fransa’da bulunmuş gibi bilgi
ve tecrübelerinin artırılması hedeflendi. Öğrencilerimiz aynı zamanda, evde yaptıkları Fransız tatlılarının, Fransızca konuşarak
yemekhanede satışını yaptılar. Bu satışlar sonucu topladıkları
paralarla Tarsus Kaleburcu Köy Okulu’na Bağış Kampanya'sına
destek verdiler.
FRENCH THEMED LUNCH AT THE TAC
CAFETERIA
On Wednesday, 4 December, TAC’s cafeteria greeted students
and teachers with a scale model of Arch de Triomphe into the
4TH YEAR OF OKTOBERFEST AT TAC
Again this year, on Friday, October 4, TAC students were “transported to Germany” in the celebration of “OKTOBERFEST” in the cafeteria. They were treated to a traditional special German lunch
menu and lots of German music thanks to the joint efforts of TAC’s
second foreign languages department and Euroserve, our school’s
food provider. Special menu items included German sausage, special potato salad, and “Apfelschorle” prepared with apple juice and
soda. During the lunch, they were accompanied by German folk
songs (Deutsche volksmusik). Getting snapshots with life-size
models with traditional German dresses added to the atmosphere of good fun, food and the celebration of this traditional German
event.

From soupe à l’oignon and quiche aux légumes, to salade niçoise,
and crème caramel on the menu, the cafeteria was hosting a
French day with the purpose of developing intercultural learning,
and exposing students to French language and culture. With
this themed lunch accompanied by French songs and visuals,
the school wished to bring TAC community a bit of France. In
addition to the menu, students sold the home-baked French
deserts to the members of the school community by practising
their French. The funds raised from the sales will support the
book donations for the Kaleburcu village school in Tarsus.

AC’nin 11. sınıf öğrencileri, 1516 Kasım 2013 günlerini Feke
Anadolu Lisesi öğrencileri ile
birlikte geçirdiler. İki aylık yoğun çalışmanın
ödülü, ev sahibi öğrencilerle oynanan
oyunlar ve geçirilen güzel zamandı. Geçen
yıl, IB öğrencileri, sınıfların tamamını
boyayarak ve okula mütevazı bir kitaplık
sunarak liseyi desteklemişlerdi. Bu yıl, IB
öğrencileri, Okul Müdürü'nün öğrencilere,
YGS’ye hazırlık kitapları temin edilmesi
yönündeki ricasını kırmayarak 200’den
fazla yeni ve kullanılmış test kitabını,
Feke öğrencilerine bağışladılar. TAC IB
öğrencileri, bu sosyal duyarlılık projesinden
yararlanan öğrencileri daha iyi tanımak
ve anlamak isteği ile Feke öğrencileri için
oyunla dolu bir gün planladılar ve yürüttüler.
Bu oyunlar, iki okulun öğrencilerinin
birbirlerini tanımalarını sağladı.

“Öncelikle, bizimkinden farklı bir okulun
öğrencilerine yardım etme şansım
olduğu için çok mutluyum. Bence, Feke’yi
ziyaretimizde çok güzel şeyler yaptık. Okula
hibe edilen test kitaplarının, öğrencilere
çalışmalarında yardımcı olacağını
umuyorum. Birçok yeni insanla tanıştım ve
yeni arkadaşlarım oldu. Okula ilk girdiğimde

of hard work leading up to the games.
Last year, IB students supported the
school by repainting all of the classrooms
and providing a modest fiction library
to the school. This year, IB students
responded to the principal’s request
to provide YGS practice books for
students by donating over 200 new
and gently used testing books.
With a desire to better know and
understand the students who have
benefited from the efforts of the IB, a
day of games were planned and executed
by IB students. These games allowed
students to get to know one another
and bridge some of the differences
between students’ school experiences.

First of all, I am very happy that I had
the opportunity to help students of a
school different from ours. I think we
did a great job in our trip to Feke and

okulun ortamı bizimkinden son derece
farklıydı. Dikkatimi ilk çeken şey öğrenci
üniformaları idi. Çünkü Türkiye’deki
birçok devlet okulu gibi, onların da mavi
üniformaları olacağını düşünmüştüm.
Herkesle tek tek el sıkışırken üniforma
yerine farklı giyeceklerle okula gelen
öğrenciler olduğunu gördüm. Bunun
nedeninin parasal sorunlar olduğunu
düşündüm. Çünkü giydikleri giysiler
eskiydi, bunu görmek beni üzdü. Bazı
öğrencilerle konuştuktan sonra, bahçede
oturdukları yerlerin farklı gruplara göre
ayrılmış olduğunun farkına vardım, son
sınıflar belli bir yerde otururken küçük
sınıflar başka bir yerde oturuyorlardı.
Dokuzuncu sınıflardan bir öğrenci, okul
bahçesine ilk girdiğimizde bizim üniversite
öğrencisi olduğumuzu sandıklarını söyledi.
Bu, onlardaki saflığı gösteriyordu. Ayrıca,
Kozan’a gidip orada bir otelde kalacağımızı
söylediğimizde, bizi tanımadıkları halde,
evlerinde kalabileceğimizi söylediler.
Benim düşündüğümden daha nazik ve
iyilerdi, yardımseverdiler ve ellerinde
olan, ne kadar az da olsa da paylaşmaya
açıktılar. Bence, böyle okullardaki
öğrencilere yardım edilmeli, çünkü
iyi insani değerlere sahipler. Onların
değerlerini takdirle karşılıyor, hepimizin
aynı değerleri edinmeye yönelik çaba
göstermemiz gerektiğini düşünüyorum.”

“Feke projesi benim ilk büyük toplum
hizmeti projemdi ve ihtiyacı olan başka
insanlara yardım etmenin ne kadar
güzel bir şey olduğunu görerek şaşırdım.
Feke’de bizi son derece iyi karşıladılar.
Kasabadaki insanlarla birlikte, öğrenciler
de herkesi içten selamladılar ve hemen
kaynaştık. Bizden farklı bir kültürde
yaşayan öğrencilerle iletişime girmek ve
onların gözünden dünyayı görmek güzeldi.
Etkinlik zamanı geldiğinde, daha yeni
tanışmış olsak bile ne kadar teşvik edici
ve arkadaşça davrandıklarını görmek
gerçekten çok güzeldi. Okulun müdürü de
çok nazikti, bizzat gelerek hepimize teşekkür
etti. Okulun kütüphanesi için toplanan
kitapları vermeye sıra geldiğinde, rafların
topladığımız kitaplarla dolması çok güzel bir
görüntüydü. Feke’deki öğrencilerin ne kadar
konuksever olduklarını görmek ve onların
ihtiyaçlarını gidermek benim için çok güzel
bir fırsattı. Toplumun belirli kesimlerine
bakışımı değiştiren başarılı bir gezi oldu.”.
to the school will be helpful for the
students in their studying. I met a lot of
new people and I also made some new
friends. When I first entered the school,
I felt a bit shy and scared because the
environment in the school was highly
different from ours. The first thing that
grabbed my attention was the students’
uniforms as I had thought they were
wearing blue uniforms as most of the
students in the public schools in Turkey
wear. As we were shaking hands with
the people one by one, I saw that there
were students who wore different
clothes instead of uniforms. I thought
that this is because of the financial
problems that these students had because
the clothes that they were wearing
were old, which made me feel sad.
After I talked with some of the students,
I realized that the places that they were
sitting around the garden of the school
were the places of different groups,
seniors were sitting at one place while
the juniors were sitting at another. A
ninth grade student told me that they
thought we were university students
when we first entered the school garden.
This showed me the purity in them
and also when we said we would go to
Kozan and stay in a hotel, they offered
us to stay in their houses without even
knowing us. This showed me that these
people are more kind and better than
I had thought because they are helpful
and they share what they have even if
the thing that they have is very little. I
think that the students in schools like
this should be helped because they have
good human values. I really appreciate
their values and I think that we should
all try to have the same values.

The Feke Project was my first big
community service project and I
was surprised to see how nice it can
be to help others who are in need.
It was a very welcoming school.
The city's people along with the students
sincerely greeted everyone and we
created a connection immediately. It
was nice to interact with people from
somewhat different cultures and to
see how they perceive the world. When
it came to the time of activities, I was
really pleased to see how encouraging
and friendly they were to do something
together although we had just met.
The head of the school also was really
kind. He personally came and thanked
us all. When it came to the time of giving
the books collected to the library of
the school, it was a nice sight to see the
shelves get full with books that we had
collected. Overall, seeing how hospitable
people were and to help those who
are in need was a great opportunity
that I am happy to have taken. It was a
successful trip that has changed the way
I look at certain parts of the society.

okulu öğrencilerinin ilgisi çok büyüktü.
Köy okulu öğrencileri Cumartesi günleri
okullarının tatil olmasına rağmen okula
gelerek ziyaretlerin gerçekleşmesini
dört gözle beklemişlerdi.
TAC Bookmobile Club visits to the village
of Kaleburcu in Tarsus have taken place
on two Saturdays: 23 November and on
21 December. In both of the visits, first
with 13 students and 4 teachers, and
second with 16 students and 4 teachers,
the host students who were all there to
greet TAC’s group were looking forward
to their guests, despite the fact that
there was no school on Saturday.

İngilizce sayılar ve renkler üzerine
oyunlar oynattılar, şarkılar söylettiler.
The students in the village school
were mostly from grades 3 and 4.

the village students using numbers
and colors in English, and sang songs
in English. This was followed by
the host students’ going to “the red
minibus” and choosing the books they
liked. After they read these books,
they return them to TAC Bookmobile
during its next visit and check out new
books. TAC Bookmobile club members
really enjoy introducing Kaleburcu
students to more books in each visit.

Tarsus Amerikan Koleji, Gezici
Kütüphane uygulamasını 1888’de
okulun kuruluşundan bu yana
gerçekleştiriyor. Geçen yüzyılın
başlarında, TAC öğrencileri
öğretmenleriyle birlikte at ve eşek
sırtında köylere götürdükleri kitapları
bırakırlar, bir dahaki gidişlerinde onları
geri alıp yerine yenilerini bırakırlarmış.

Tarsus American College has been
making its “Bookmobile” available since
1888, the foundation of the school. At
the turn of last century, TAC students
and teachers used to leave the books
carried on horses and donkeys to these
villages, and in their next visit, replace
them with new books, thus introducing
the village children to more books.
These archaic method of community
outreach has long been replaced by
TAC’s “red minibus”. Browsing through
the shelves in the minibus, which are
enriched with book donations from TAC,
is the highlight of the visit for young
students of the Kaleburcu village.

arsus Amerikan Koleji öğrencileri,
öğretmenleriyle birlikte,
7 Aralık 2013 Cumartesi günü
Tarsus Huzurevi’ni ziyaret etti. Ziyareti
huzurevi bahçesinde sohbet ederek
geçiren gençler, huzurevi sakinlerinden
anılarını dinlediler, bu anıların yaşandığı
zamanlarla günümüzü karşılaştırma
imkânı buldular. Huzurevi sakinleri, o
günkü bahçe sohbetlerine güzel bir ruh
kattığımızı belirttiler. Öğrencilerimiz
ayrılırken, huzurevine geldikleri ve orada
kalanlarla etkileşimde bulundukları
için mutlu olduklarını ifade ediyorlardı.
Huzurevi sakinleriyle bir dahaki ziyarette
tekrar görüşebilmek üzere oradan ayrıldık.
Öğrencilerimiz yol boyunca, dinledikleri
anılar üzerine yorumlar yapıyorlardı.

young people from TAC listened to the
memories of the elders, and had a chance
to make a comparison between things
which occurred many years before they
were born, and with more current events.

mü?” adlı toplantıda derneğin Mersin Şubesi’nin Başkanı Prof.
Dr. Aynur Özge, Alzheimer hastalığının belirtileri ve özelliklerinin yanı sıra, sağlıklı bir yaşlılık dönemi için alınması gereken
önlemleri paylaştı.
By the time of departure, the TAC group
had already resolved to organize more
regular trips to the senior citizens
home, and hear more interesting stories
from their newly made friends. The
students spent the commute back home
sharing with each other the memories
they had heard during their visit.
Possible?” facilitated by the President of the Mersin Branch of the
society, Prof. Dr. Aynur Özge, attracted a large turnout of viewers
from the Tarsus and Mersin communities. During the seminar,
important information about the characteristics and signs heralding Alzheimer’s diesase, as well as precautionary measures to
warrant a healthy aging period, were shared.
ALZHEIMER SOCIETY IN MERSIN
MEETS AT TAC
The information seminar organized by the Mersin Branch of
the National Alzheimer’s Society was held on 5 December 2013
in the auditorium of Tarsus American College. The presentation
entitled “Alzheimer’s Disease: Is Early Diagnosis and Prevention
in receiving TAC students, and the
warm, eager spirit they added to their
conversations in the garden. TAC students
too apparently were very pleased to
interact with the senior citizens.

emen yanı başımızda bulunan
Hasan Karamehmetler İlköğretim
Okulu ile yıllardan beri
sürdüğümüz komşuluk ilişkilerimize devam
ediyoruz. Hasan Karamehmetler İlköğretim
Okulu bu yıl sadece 1-4. sınıf seviyelerinde
eğitim veren ilkokula dönüştürüldü. Bu
durumda, bizim hizmet vermek istediğimiz
öğrencilerin yaşlarında ciddi bir küçülme
oldu. Daha önce 6., 7. ve 8. sınıf öğrencileriyle
yönelik yaptığımız çalışmaları, bu yıl 3. ve
4. sınıf öğrencilerle yapmak durumunda
kaldık. Fakat, hiç beklemediğimiz müthiş
bir ilgiyle karşılaştık. İlk gün yapacağımız
futbol ve basketbol kursumuza 3. ve 4.
sınıf öğrencilerinden oluşan 75 kişilik bir
grup geldi. Yeni başlattığımız matematik
ve İngilizce kurslarımız için de 80 kişilik
bir grupla karşılaştık. Diğer kurslarımız
da yakında başlayacak, ancak bunlardaki
öğrenci sayısını sınırlı olarak talep ettik.
Gördüğümüz ilgi bizi gerçekten çok iyi
hissettiriyor. Hem komşu okulun küçük
öğrencilerinden, hem de onların velilerinden
gelen teşekkürler, onca kalabalıkla
uğraşmanın verdiği bütün yorgunluğu silip
götürüyor. Kursları verenler çoğunlukla
IB öğrencilerimiz, fakat ulusal program
öğrencilerimizin de katkısı çok büyük.
TAC öğrencilerinin kurs bitimlerinde
paylaştıkları hisleri de gerçekten muhteşem.
Bu küçük öğrencilerle yoğun duygusal
iletişim yaşadıklarını, sonuna kadar
her türlü şekilde onlara destek olmak
istediklerini, kursların sadece haftada bir
değil de, daha sık olmasını dile getiren TAC
öğrencileriyle gururlanmamak elde değil.
TAC continues to serve the Tarsus
community by starting right next door.
The Hasan Karamehmetler Elementary
School was reorganized into a school only
for grades 1-4 this year, which resulted in
having a significantly younger audience
than expected, namely grades 3 and 4,
for TAC’s community service group, as
compared to last year’s activities for
grades 6, 7 and 8. However, this did not
alter the interest of the guest school in
the program created for them by TAC
students. On the contrary, there was a
very large turnout. On the first day, the
football and basketball courses were
attended by 75 students from grades 3
and 4. In the mathematics and English
courses, TAC students worked with
a group of 80 students. Planning is
underway for other courses, however,
TAC had to limit the number of students
to these inital two. This large interest
to the program makes each volunteer
feel really good, and receiving thanks
from both these young children and
their parents makes the tiredness
of managing such a large group well
worth it. The student “teachers” of
these courses are mostly IB students,
however, there is strong contribution
from the non-IB students as well.
TAC takes pride in having students
who also feel rewarded by the intense
emotional connect they have with
their young students, and who express
their wish to continue to support
them on a more frequent basis.

Birliği, her yıl yatılı öğrencilere
belirli zamanlarda ev yemeklerinden
oluşan bir ziyafet veriyor. Düzenlenen
bu yemek etkinliği, öğrencileri okul
süresince uzak kaldıkları ev yemekleriyle
buluşturmanın yanı sıra, Okul Aile Birliği
Üyeleri’nin yatılı öğrencileri yakından
tanıma, onlarla sohbet edip sorunlarını
dinleme noktasında da büyük fayda sağlıyor.

Büyükyılmaz ve değerli üyeler, yapılacak
yemeklere karar vermeden önce, biz yatılı
ekibiyle bir araya geldiler. Öğrencilerin
özledikleri ve sevdikleri yemekleri
öğrenerek, özellikle o yemeklerin
yapılmasına itina gösterdiler. Bu yıl, ilki 12
Kasım 2013 Salı günü yapılan bu etkinliğin
hemen ardından, öğrenciler sabırsızlıkla
ikincisini beklediklerini belirttiler. Okul
Aile Birliği’nden gelen haberle, ikinci yemek
19 Aralık 2013 Perşembe günü yapıldı.
Her defasında, bir önce düzenlenen yemeği
aratmayacak kadar leziz ve çeşitli yemekler
sunan ailelerimiz, bir de servisi kendi
elleriyle yapınca, öğrencilerin keyfine ve
mutluluğuna diyecek olmuyor. TAC Okul
Aile Birliği’nin göstermiş olduğu sıcaklık,
yemeği her anlamıyla daha keyifli hale
getiriyor. Yapılan yemekler, öğrencilerimizin
evde yemeğe alışmış oldukları zahmetli ve
yöresel yemekler olup, Türk mutfağının
çeşitliliğini ve lezzetini ortaya koyacak
türden. Fındık lahmacun, içli köfte, yaprak
sarması, tavuk kebabı, peynirli börek ve
tadına doyum olmayan kekler, pastalar
bunlardan sadece birkaçı. Tabii ki yemeği
sadece anlamlı ve unutulmaz kılan,
yemeklerin lezzeti değil. Bir velimizin, elinde
baklava tepsisiyle tek tek masaları gezip
öğrencilere yaptığı ikram, yemekler kadar
öğrencilerden alkış topladı. Bununla da
yetinmeyen Okul Aile Birliği üyeleri, yemek
sonrasında da öğrencilerin acıkabileceğini
düşünerek paketler hazırlayıp verdiler.
Değerli TAC Okul Aile Birliği üyelerine,
düşünüp, zahmet edip birbirinden leziz
yemeler hazırladıkları ve öğrencilerimize
gösterdikleri ilgi için yatılı öğrenciler ve
yatılı ekibi adına teşekkür ediyoruz.
TAC's boarding students have the
privilege to enjoy special dinners offering
them a selection of Turkish home-made
favorites, thanks to the efforts of the
TAC Parent Teacher Association. This
culinary feast brings to students the food
from home which they miss. It also is an
opportunity for the TAC's PTA members
to get to know more about the boarding
students, hear about their boarding
experience and share their problems.
TAC PTA President Şebnem Büyükyılmaz
and the other parents make sure that
they communicate with the dormitory
staff beforehand to find out about the
most favorite and long-awaited dishes,
so that the selection of food reflects
students' own preferences. Right after
the first parent cookout night of the
year on Tuesday, 12 November 2013,
the boarding students expressed their
hope to have a second one soon. Fulfilling
their wishes, the PTA scheduled the
next dinner on Thursday 19 December.
The wide variety of food tastes
better when they are served with the
familial approach of the TAC parent
representatives, some traveling from one
table to the next to serve each student.
The selection reflects the rich diversity
of Turkish local food, as well as dishes
which are unique to Çukurova region.
Bite-size lahmacun, içli köfte, vine leaf
wraps, chicken kebab, cheese boreks
and cakes are just a few examples.
Considerate of the fact that students
may get hungry later, the parents even
organized to-go bags of left over food
for each student to take with them.
The boarding division of the Tarsus
American College expresses its
appreciation to PTA members for
their work in preparing the cookout
as well as the special care they show
to the resident TAC students, which
make them feel more at home.

zun süredir toplu halde yatakhane
dışına çıkmıyorduk. Gerek birçok
hafta sonunun tatile denk gelmesi
ve sınavlar, gerek okul içi etkinlikler
derken, bu yıl planlamış olduğumuz
bazı etkinlikleri gerçekleştiremedik.

Basketbol Takımı eski antrenörü olan
Yatılı Süpervizörümüz Ahmet İlhan, yatılı
öğrencilerimizi maça götürmeyi teklif
ettiler ve bizler de, öğrencilere sorduktan
sonra, bu fikrin çok iyi olduğuna karar
verdik. 14 Kasım 2013 Perşembe akşamı saat
17:00'de yaklaşık yatılı 40 öğrenci ile birlikte
okuldan çıktık ve salonda yerimizi aldık.
Kimilerinin mezun, kimilerinin öğrenci,
kimilerinin çalışan olmaktan gurur duyduğu,
okulumuzun logosunun da olduğu pankartı
tribünlere astık. Sonra da tezahüratlara
başladık ve Tarsus Belediyespor Bayan
Basketbol Takımı’nı rakibi Dynamo
Novosibirsk karşısında destekledik. Spor
salonu Atatürk posterleri ve Türk bayrakları
ile donatılmıştı. Belediye yetkilileri,
öğrencilerimize de bayrak verdiler. Maçın
ilk anlarından itibaren skoru önde götüren
Tarsus Belediyespor maç sonunda Rus
Tarsus Belediyespor’u kutluyor,
başarılarının devamını diliyoruz. Maçın
ardından yorulan ve acıkan öğrencilerimizle
birlikte spor salonunun yakınında bulunan
bir kafeye gittik. Yemeklerini yiyen
öğrencilerimizle birlikte okula doğru yola
çıktık. Güzel bir gündü, hiç olmazsa farklı
bir şeyler yapmıştık. Bize bu etkinlikte eşlik
eden okul doktorumuz ve TAC Mezunlar
Derneği Başkanı Dr. Ali Cerrahoğlu’na,
okulumuz mezunu ve şu an okulumuzda
kurucu temsilcisi olarak görev yapmakta
olan Necati Güler’e teşekkür ediyoruz.
On Thursday, November 14, 2013 at
17:00 the boarding team departed with
40 students and soon took their places
in the sports hall. After placing the
placard on the bleachers which bears the
logo of the school, of which the group
is proud member, TAC group started
cheering for the Tarsus Municipality’s
Women Basketball Team against
Dynamo Novosibirsk. The sports hall was
decorated with posters of Ataturk and
Turkish flags. The municipality handed
out team’s flags to the TAC students.
Tarsus team, which led the game from its
first moments, beated Russian team by a
score of 91-62 and did not fail the strong
cheer and support by the viewers. The
evening ended with a nice meal in a cafe.
To ultimately have a well deserved break
from the confines of the dormitory
building, which has been delayed by
various holidays falling on weekends
and school activities, a good reason
was to watch a basketball game. The
physical education department and
Ahmet İlhan, the boarding supervisor,
TAC congratulates Tarsus Municipality
team and wishes them continued success.
The school is also grateful to have the
support of Dr. Ali Cerrahoglu, the school
doctor and President of the TAC Alumni
Association and Mr. Necati Güler, the
founder’s representative in involving
boarding students in athletic events.

yıllık yatılılık geleneğinde farklı
alanlarda liderler yetiştiriyor,
yüz yılı aşkın süredir Türkiye’nin ve
dünyanın başarılı liderler yuvası olarak
biliniyor. Tarsus Amerikan Koleji’nde
yatılılık geleneği, bir öğrencinin kampüse
adımını atmasıyla başlıyor ve bir ömür
boyu devam ediyor. Bu geleneğin doğru
aktarılması ve istikrarın sağlanabilmesi
için, yeni kaydolan yatılı öğrenciler ve
velilere okulumuz açılmadan önceki hafta
sonu oryantasyon programı uygulanıyor.
In its 125 year history, Tarsus American
College has been renowned for raising
leaders, for Turkey and the world. TAC
students steps into the boarding tradition
on the first day of school, and it continues
for the rest of their lives. In order for this
tradition to be correctly transferred to
the next cohort of boarding students, and
to bring the community closer together,
an orientation program is organized every
year for the newly registered boarding
students and their parents, on the last
weekend before the start of the school.

Eylül 2013 tarihlerinde gerçekleştirildi.
Oryantasyon programının başladığı
7 Eylül 2013 Cumartesi günü, yeni yatılı
öğrencilerimiz ve velileri kampüsümüze saat
10.00 itibariyle giriş yaptılar. Tunceli’den,
Antep’ten, İzmir’den, İstanbul’dan,
Niğde’den ve Osmaniye’den gelen 11’i yeni
yatılı öğrencimiz olmak üzere yaklaşık
40 misafiri yatılı bölüm öğretmenleri
karşıladılar. Tanışmaların ardından
velilerimiz yatılı bölüm için gerekli olan
This year’s orientation days were 7 and
8 September 2013. On the Saturday, the
first day, new boarding students and their
parents started arriving on campus at
10:00. The boarding team greeted each
and every new member of the boarding
family, eleven students, and in total,
forty guests. After the introductions,
the parents filled in the required
documents and were accompanied in a
tour of campus by TAC’s peer counselors.
Following the tour, they were taken to

amacıyla akran rehberleri eşliğinde kısa bir
okul turu attılar. Kısa okul turunun ardından
yeni öğrencilerimiz ve velileri okulumuz
oditoryumunda yatılı hayatı, yatılı kuralları
ve aktivitelerinin anlatıldığı, ayrıca sağlık
konuları hakkında ve okulumuz rehberlik
bölümünün hazırladığı yatılılığa uyum
konularında hazırlanan sunuma katıldılar.
Sunumun sonlarına doğru yeni
öğrencilerimizin bu yıl kalacakları odalar
ve yatakların belirlendiği kura çekimi
yapıldı. Öğrenciler, velileriyle birlikte,
yatılı öğretmenlerinin eşliğinde, kurada
kendilerine çıkan odalarına geçtiler ve
dolaplarını yerleştirdiler. Okulumuzun
simgesi Stickler Binası’nın önünde akşam
18:30'da yapılan barbekü partisinin ardından
yeni yatılı velilerimiz okulumuzdan
ertesi gün geri gelmek üzere ayrıldılar.
Velilerin okuldan ayrılmasından sonra
rehber öğretmenlerimiz, tüm yeni
öğrencilerimizle uyum ve kaynaşma
toplantıları yaptılar, her saat yeni bir
öğrencilerimizin yüzünün biraz daha
gülmesi ve alıştığını görmemiz, biz yatılı
öğretmenlerine mutluluk veriyordu.
Toplantıların ardından, öğrencilerimiz
spor salonumuzda yatılı sorumlularımızla
birlikte basket ve voleybol oynadılar.

8 Eylül 2013 Pazar günü velilerimiz
öğrencileriyle birlikte kahvaltı yapmak
üzere okulumuza geldiler. Kahvaltı
sonrasında öğrencilerimiz akran
rehberleriyle birlikte olurken, yeni yatılı
velilerimiz de rehber öğretmenlerimizle
birlikte toplantılar yaptılar. Öğleden
sonra tüm yatılı öğrencilerimizin de
okulumuza giriş yapmasıyla büyük
yatılı ailemiz bir araya geldi ve yenieski öğrencilerimizin kaynaşmasını
sağlayacak faaliyetlere devam edildi.

students and boarding supervisors.

Towards the end of the presentation,
there was a lottery to determine the
rooms and beds to which each boarding
student would be assigned. This was
On Sunday, the second day of the
program, the parents came back to
campus to have breakfast with their
children. Following breakfast, the new
boarding students were introduced to
TAC’s peer counselors, while their parents
met with the boarding supervisors.
Later in the afternoon with the arrival
of the returning boarding students, the
family was complete. The rest of the
day saw various activities which aimed
to bring old and new members of the
boarding community closer together.

atılı öğrencilerimiz, 14 Eylül
2013 Cumartesi günü, yatılı
hafta sonu etkinliğinin ilki olan,
deniz ve güneşin buluştuğu Yapraklı
Koyu’nun keyfini çıkardılar. Cumartesi
yatakhanemizin yemekhanesinde
güzel, keyifli ve sıkı bir kahvaltının
ardından saat 11.00 itibariyle keyifli ve
heyecanlı yolculuğumuz başladı. Prep
öğrencilerimizle, yatılı diğer öğrencilerin
kaynaşmasını sağlayacağını düşündüğümüz
deniz serüvenimiz, 25 yatılı öğrencimiz
ve Yatılı Süpervizörleri Cem Gökayaz,
Mehmet Özyaşamış, Demet Kara ve Yatılı
Yöneticisi Nail Baran eşliğinde başladı.
Öğrencileri, daha da mutlu edecek bir
süpriz bekliyordu. O da okulumuzun Beden
Eğitimi öğretmenleri olan İsmail Usun ve
Müge Usun’un aramıza katılmalarıydı.
1,5 saat süren yolculuğun sonunda eşsiz
güzelliğiyle Yapraklı Koy bize kapılarını açtı.
Sıcaktan iyice bunalmış olan öğrencilerimiz
hocalarıyla birlikte keyifli deniz ziyafetinin
içinde buldular kendilerini. Yapraklı
Koy'un kendine has özelliği olan kayaların
altından gelen bir soğuk bir sıcak su akıntısı
öğrencilerin daha fazla eğlenmelerini
sağladı. Deniz keyfimizi daha da eğlenceli
hale dönüştürebilmek için etkinliğin içinde
bir etkinlik daha yaratarak, öğrencileri
muza bindirip hafızalarında daha da kalıcı
hale getirdik. Acıkan gözlerle bizlere
bakan öğrencilerimizi damak tatlarına
uygun, doyurucu bir yemekle karşıladık.
Artık okulumuza dönüş vakti gelmişti.
Öğrencilerimizin yorulan bedenlerini
canlandırmak ve ruhlarına biraz daha
mutluluk eklemek için Narlıkuyu’nun
meşhur lokma tatlısıyla onları buluşturduk.
Mutlu, keyifli ve gülümseyen yüz ifadeleriyle
dolu servisimiz bizi okula getirirken,
etkinlikten çok memnun kaldığını
söyleyen öğrenciler, en kısa zamanda
bir daha böyle bir etkinlik kapsamında
olmak istediklerini dile getirdiler.
TAC’s boarding students went on
the first weekend excursion of the
year on Saturday 14 September, and
the destination was Yapraklı Koy, a
beach where the sun and beatiful sea
meets. After an enjoyable breakfast
on Saturday at the cafeteria, the group
set out for west of Mersin at 11:00. The
Yapraklı Koy beach greeted twenty five
boarding students and the boarding
supervisors Cem Gökayaz, Mehmet
Özyaşamış, Demet Kara and Nail Baran.
The surprise was that they would be
joined by physical education teachers
İsmail Usun and Müge Usun. At the end
of a one-and-a-half-hour bus ride, they
were finally in Yapraklı Koy. Before they
know it, they were diving into the water
in this special beach, which is known for
its refreshing cold water current. The
trip was made even more memorable
by the banana boat ride. Spending that
much time on the sea had eventually
made everyone hungry and it was time to
eat the food served at the beach. Before
getting on the buses to Tarsus, the group
made sure to stop by for the famous
lokma dessert in Narlıkuyu. Students
on the return trip talked about the fun
they had, and were already looking
forward to the next trip to beach.

kulumuza geldiği günden bu yana
kampüsümüzün lojmanlarında
kalan TAC Biyoloji öğretmenimiz
Lauren De Vries, yatılı öğrencilerin birçok
anında, yanlarında bulunan, dersine
girsin girmesin, tüm yatılı öğrencilerle
yakından ilgilenen bir öğretmenimizdir.
Ms. De Vries, yatılı öğrencilerle tatile
girmeden yılbaşı eğlencesi yapmak
üzere evinde bir parti düzenledi. Yılbaşı
partisine, tüm yatılı öğrenciler davetliydi.
Yatılı öğrencilerin çok büyük kısmı, bu
partiye katılarak eğlenceli vakit geçirdi.
24 Aralık 2013 Salı akşamı, etüt
sonrasında, 20.30’da başlayan partiye,
hazırlık sınıfı ve dokuzuncu sınıfların
ilgisi büyüktü. Ms. De Vries’in hazırladığı
ikramlara ek olarak öğrencilerin de
yanlarında götürdükleri yiyecekler menü
çeşitliliğini artırmıştı. Yeni yıl ışıklarıyla
süslenen evde, müziğin çalmaya
başlamasıyla hareketli ve eğlenceli anlar
yaşandı. Partiye katılan yaklaşık 40 yatılı
öğrenci dileklerini bir kâğıda yazdıktan
sonra Ms. De Vries’e bugüne kadar birçok
etkinlikte yanlarından bulunduğundan
ve böyle bir parti düzenlediğinden
dolayı teşekkürlerini sundular.
Biz yatılı ekibinin de bulunduğu bu
eğlenceli ve düşünceli davet için
Ms. De Vries’e teşekkür edip, yeni
yılın ona mutluluk getirmesini
dileyerek evinden ayrıldık.
Ms. Lauren DeVries, TAC's biology
teacher who lives at the TAC's campus
apartments,is one the teachers who
share the experiences of all boarding
students at TAC, including those
students who she does not teach.
On Tuesday, 24 December, the
Christmas eve, she organized a new
year party at her apartment for
boarding students before they left
for the break. About forty students,
the majority of whom were from prep
and grade 9, were there. Everyone
had a very enjoyable time at this
unique occasion, which started at
20:30 with the dinner prepared by
Ms. DeVries, and enriched with the
food which the students brought.
The decoration of the apartment, the
lights and the music all contributed
to creating a great ambiance for
this celebration. By the end of
the party, each of these forty
students had written their new
year's wishes on a piece of paper.
The students thanked Ms. DeVries
for such a considerate enrichment
of their boarding experiences. TAC's
boarding staff, who shared the fun
at Ms. DeVries' house that night,
is also very appreciative of this
thoughtful invitation and wishes
Ms. DeVries a happy new year!

harlie Chaplin’in de dediği gibi,
tiyatronun bizzat yaşamın kendisi
olduğunu düşünen okulumuz
Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Bölümü, 19 Aralık
2013 günü öğretmenlerden ve yatılı
öğrencilerimizden oluşan 35 kişilik
bir grupla Adana Devlet Tiyatrosu’nun
sahnelediği “Kırkından Sonra” adlı oyunu
izledi. İdeallerini çok çalışmak üzerine
kuran genç kuşak ile solmuş çiçeklerin
kendine özgü kokuları olduğunu geç
de olsa fark etmiş olan ruhların (yaşlı
anne-baba) hikâyesinin anlatıldığı iki
perdelik komediyi bütün grup baştan
sona eğlenerek, zevk alarak izledi.
Oyun bitiminde oyuncuların bütün
salon tarafından ayakta alkışlanması da
oyunun başarısının bir kanıtıydı. Tiyatro
etkinliğine katılan bütün öğrencilerin
yüzlerinde mutluluk hâkimdi. Herkesin
ortak yorumu, oyunun çok başarılı
olduğu ve bütün oyuncuların sahnede
devleştikleri yönündeydi. Öğrenciler,
bu tarz etkinliklerden zevk aldıklarını
söyleyerek, bundan sonraki tiyatro
etkinliklerine daha sık katılacaklarını
belirttiler. Öğrenciler, Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı
Bölüm Başkanı Muhsin Bulut başta
olmak üzere tüm bölüm öğretmenlerine
teşekkür ettiler.Okulumuzun yatılı
öğrencilerinden sorumlu öğretmenlerine,
bu etkinliğe katılan herkese teşekkür
ederiz. Unutmayalım ki, ‘Tiyatrosu olan bir
ülkede kötülükler, çirkinlikler, yanlışlıklar
sürüp gitmez. Hepiniz tiyatroyla kalın.’
Echoing these words by Charlie Chaplin,
and thinking that drama symbolizes
life itself,went to see the play called
“Kırkından Sonra” (In Your Forties)
with a group of 35 individuals made
up of TAC’s boarding students and
teachers on Thursday, 19 December.
The two-act comedy which depicted
the story of two souls (aged motherfather) who discover that even faded
flowers have their own unique smell,
and of your generation who base their
ideals on working hard, was thoroughly
enjoyed by the TAC group. The play
receiving a standing ovation at the
end indicated that the entire audience
was of the same opinion. All agreed
that the play was a success, and the
actors became gigantic on stage.
TAC students expressed their
enjoyment of such activities anda re
looking forward to the next drama
performance in the region. They were
appreciative of this organization made
possible by the Turkish Language
Department, and by Muhsin Bulut.

Let us not forget “in a country which
has theatres, bad things do not

undan önceki senelerde,
sadece iş hayatındaki
çalışmaları ve ilerlemeleri
anlatan kariyer kavramı,
artık öğrenim hayatındaki
tercihleri de kapsar hale gelmiştir. Bir
öğrencinin seçtiği lise ile başlayan kariyer
süreci, çok erken yaşlardan itibaren
uzman kişilerin denetim ve gözetimi
ile yönetilmesi gereken bir süreçtir.
Bu süreç, liseye atılan ilk adımdan
itibaren, kişinin ilgi, yetenek ve değerlerini
keşfetmesiyle ve meslekler hakkında
sorular sormasıyla başlamaktadır. Bu
anlamda, yapılan en önemli seçimlerden
bir tanesi de 9. sınıf sonunda öğrencinin
ilgisini, yeteneklerini, değerlerini ve kişilik
özelliklerini en iyi şekilde tanıyarak güçlü
olduğu bir alana yönlendirilmesidir.
Ergenlik dönemi gibi zorlu ve karmaşık
bir dönemde olan öğrencilerin gelişim
hedeflerinin en büyüğü, güçlü ve kişiliği ile
uyumlu bir ‘kimlik kavramı’ oluşturmasıdır.
Bu süreç, birçok farklı etmenin dahil
olduğu bir karar verme mücadelesidir.
Aynı zamanda, kendine en uygun alanlarda
akademik olarak donanımlı hale gelmek,
hem kimlik oluşumunu etkileyen, hem de
bir o kadar ondan etkilenen bir süreçtir.
10. sınıf ve ilerleyen dönemde öğrenci,
yöneldiği alanda artık akademik olarak
daha güçlü ve bilgili hale gelmeye
başlamaktadır. Yönelmek istediği alana
ve kişilik özelliklerine uyumlu bir meslek
seçimi karmaşasına girmesi beklenen
bir durumdur. 11. sınıfa geçtiğinde, artık
birçok konuda daha kararlı hale gelmesi
beklenen öğrenciler, genel anlamda da
olsa yurtiçinde mi, yoksa yurtdışında mı
okumak istediğine ya da matematik fen
bilimleri alanına mı, mühendislik mi yoksa
sağlık bilimleri alanına mı ilgi duyduğuna
karar vermesi gerekmektedir. 11. sınıf
artık bir sene sonra girilecek sınavların
mantalitesini kavramak açısından
önemlidir. Bu süreçte hazırlık sürecinin
ayrıntısıyla planlanması gerekmektedir.
Bunun yanında, meslek ve üniversite
hedefleri bir liste halinde, değişen bir ranj
içerisinde 15-30 faklı bölüm ve üniversite
tercihi şeklinde oluşan bir portföye
dönüşmelidir. Bu hedefler, başlayacak olan
uzun vadeli çalışmalar için önemlidir.
Kişilik ve kimlik özelliklerine en uygun
seçilen ve planlanan üniversite ve bölüm
tercihi, öğrencinin uzun süreli yüksek
öğrenimini belirleyecek ve bu eğitimin
ardından atılacağı çalışma hayatı ve
kariyer sürecini etkileyecektir.
What is career and what does it entail?
The concept of career, which was once
limited to professional field of work
and improvements, has now broadened
to include learning and educational
choices. A student’s career, which starts
with the high school of choice, should
be guided by counselors and experts
starting from the first years. This period
starts with the transition to high school,
when students start to discover areas
of interest, talents and values and ask
questions about careers. The end of the
grade 9 year marks an important stage
in this respect, when students are drawn
towards a particular area of strength
after becoming more familiar with their
interests, values and personal traits.
The most defined purpose in the
adolescent period is to form a strong
“sense of identity”, which should be
born out of one’s personal traits. This
decision making process, where many
different factors come into play, is one
which reinforces the self-awareness.
Being equipped with academic
knowledge in areas of interest is a
process which is intertwined with
the development of one’s identity.
In Grade 10 and onwards, students
are gradually becoming stronger and
academically more knowledgeable
in these areas. They are expected to
be already thinking about a potential
career which would reflect these areas
and their personal traits. A student
in grade 11 is expected to have made
decisions on, at least, whether they
want to study in Turkey or abroad,
to concentrate on mathematics or
science track, on the department of
engineering or health sciences.
This is a year when the student needs
to gather information about the
technicalities of the exam to take place
next year, and plan the preparation
process. The somewhat abstract
career and university goals transform
into a portfolio of 15-30 different
departments/universities in a varying
range. These goals are very important
decisions which will affect student’s
motivation towards the long-term
period of post-secondary studies.
The choice of universities and
departments, which best reflect the
personal character and identity, will
determine long-term post-secondary
paths and have an impact on the career
decision which will follow this education.

öncelik taşıyan bir öğesidir. Sağlık
genellikle kendiliğinden var olan
bir durum olarak algılanır. Oysa sağlıklı
olmak için çaba gösterilmesi gerekir.
TAC Beden Eğitimi Bölümü ve Kurumsal
İletişim Departmanı olarak, 14 Kasım
2013 tarihinde, 1990 TAC Mezunu, Detoks
(Arınma) ve Sağlıklı Yaşam Uzmanı
Gül Kaynak’ı okulumuzda ağırladık.
Öğrencilerimize ve velilerimize
verdiği seminerde, doğal beslenme, su
içmenin faydaları, pozitif düşünmek
ve spor yapmak gibi temel yaşam
prensipleri doğrultusunda hayatın
sırlarını anlatarak büyük ilgi topladı.
Görsel olarak yaptığı sunumla da dikkat
çekerek, hazırladığı doğal karışımları
öğrencilerimize tattırma fırsatını sundu.
Öğrencilerimizden ve velilerimizden gelen
soruları itinayla yanıtlayarak, aklımıza
takılanlara cevap bulmamızı sağladı.
Health is an important prerequisite of
happiness. Good health is something
which is usually taken for granted,
although it requires conscious efforts to
maintain. On 14 November 2013, TAC’s
Physical Education Department hosted
Ms. Gül Kaynak, TAC graduate of 1990, a
specialist in detox and healthy life habits,
who provided valuable insights into
what these specific efforts should be.
Kaynak’s presentation was viewed by a
large audience of students and parents
who were eager to find out about the
benefits of nutrition with natural products,
drinking water, positive thinking and
physical exercise. Her applied presentation,
including having TAC students taste the
natural mixtures she prepared on stage,
was another highlight. Lastly, she answered
questions from the floor and clarified some
points about how to maintain good health.
TAC expresses sincere thanks to Ms.
Kaynak, who provided guidance to the
school community in taking firm steps
towards a healthy and quality life.

VELİ ETKİLEŞİM
TOPLANTILARI
Veli etkileşim toplantısının amacı, belirlenmiş bir konu hakkında velilerimize
yeni bilgiler sunmak, bu bilgiler çerçevesinde kendi iç dünyalarına ışık tutmalarına olanak sağlamak ve okul ortamı
dışında da bir araya gelerek özel paylaşım-iletişim olanağı yaratmaktır. Ayrıca
bu toplantılar, Rehberlik ve Psikolojik
Danışma Servisi ile kurulu bağları güçlendirilmesine neden olmaktadır.
Ayrıca, velilerin farklı bir bakış açısıyla, duygusal ve kişisel paylaşımın
yoğun olduğu bir ortamda birbirlerini tanımalarını ve kaynaşmalarını da
sağlamaktadır. Belli konular ile ilgili doğrudan bilgi vermekten çok, psikodramatik etkinlikler ile yaşantı ve paylaşım temelli bir işleyiş yürütülmektedir. 2013- 2014 öğretim yılı birinci dönem için Adana ve Mersin
Hilton otellerinde planlanan TAC veli etkileşim toplantısının konusu,
‘Ailede İletişim ve Roller’di. Bu çalışmanın hedefi, velilerimize köken aileleri ve çekirdek aile ortamlarına ilişkin bir içgörü kazandırmak ve aile
içerisindeki rolleri hakkındaki farkındalık yaratmaktı. Yapılan toplantılar iletişimin temelleri konusunda var olan stratejilerimizi fark etmek,
kullandığımız iletişim tarzlarını anlamak ve öğrencinin gelişmesine
yönelik hem bilgi verici bir çalışma oldu. Bu toplantılarda kendimiz, ailemiz ve çevremiz ile ilgili geliştirdiğimiz düşünce ve duygu şekillerini
anlamamızın yanı sıra, eksik gördüğümüz taraflarımızı nasıl geliştirebileceğimize yönelik uygulamalı çalışmalar yapılmaktadır. Bu sayede,
belirli konularda derinlemesine farkındalıklar, günlük hayatımızı daha
keyifli ve verimli hale getirecektir.
TAC’S SCHOOL-PARENT INTERACTION
MEETINGS
The goal of the school-parent interaction meetings is to provide new
information to our parents on various topics in relation with their
children, to help them shed light on their personal world, and to create
a more personal forum for communication between home and school.
These meetings also help improve the bonds between parents and TAC’s
Counseling Department and enable socialization of parents in a setting
characterized by intense emotional and personal sharing.
In addition, these meetings provide an outlet for participants to share their
real life experiences through psychodrama, rather than one-way transfer
of information. The topic of the school-parent interaction meetings in
the first semester was “Communication and Roles Within a Family”. The
goal of this meeting was to provide insights about family of origin, and the
nuclear family, and to create awareness about roles in the family. These
meetings focused on experiential learning which resulted in parents
discovering the most common strategies in communication, and included
tips on how to improve each participant’s own communicative style.
As a useful forum for understanding thinking patterns about self, family
and community, these meetings also informed parents about effective
models to improve personal weaknesses. Such deep insights about certain
subjects, it is hoped, will make daily lives more enjoyable and effective for
both parents and TAC students.

VELİ KONFERANSLARI
Rehberlik ve Psikolojik Danışma Departmanı’nın
velilerimize yönelik yaptığı etkinlikten biri de konferanslardır. Genellikle tüm okula ya da belli bir grubun
yaş ve gelişim özelliklerine yönelik olarak, kişisel,
sosyal, mesleki veya akademik konularda ailelerin
de bilgi sahibi olması amacıyla gerçekleştirilen bir
etkinliktir.
2 Ekim 2013 tarihinde, ‘ÖSYS Sistemi’ konulu konferansta YGS ve LYS sınavlarının teknik özellikleri,
sınav hazırlık yılında öğrenci ve velilerin karşılaşacağı zorluklar ve birçok farklı konu hakkında bilgi, tüm
velilerimize yönelik olarak Koordinatör ve Uzman
Psikolojik Danışman Sinan Öz tarafından verildi. 9.
sınıf, öğrencilerin akademik olarak liseye ilk başladıkları dönemdir. Bu yılın önemli konularından birisi de akademik hayat ve getirileridir. Buna yönelik
olarak Psikolojik Danışman Eyüp Karaman, 9 Ekim
2013 tarihinde, “9. Sınıf ve Akademik Başarının Önemi” konulu veli konferansını verdi.
Ayrıca, okula yeni başlayan öğrencilerin en önemli
sorunlarından biri, okula ve hazırlık sınıfına, ayrıca
ergenlik dönemine uyumdur. Bu konu hakkında, Uzman Psikolojik Danışman Özlem Algan, 6 Kasım 2013
tarihinde, “Bir Ergen Velisi Olmak” adlı konferansını
hazırlık sınıfı velilerimize yönelik olarak verdi.
PARENT INFORMATION
MEETINGS AT TAC
One of the activities of the TAC Counseling Department for parents are the parent information sessions.
Its purpose is to inform families about various topics
of personal, social, professional or academic interest on
the characteristics of the age and developmental period
of their children. During the first session of the year titled “ÖSYS University Entrance System” on 2 October
2013, parents found out about the technicalities of the
YGS and LYS exams, the challenges to be expected during the preparation year in many aspects. The session
was facilitated by TAC’s counselor and department coordinator, Sinan Öz. Grade 9 is the threshold of the high
school career. One of the most important values of this
year is academic life and its benefits. For grade 9 students and parents specifically, another TAC counselor,
Eyüp Karaman led the session on “The Importance of
Grade 9” on 9 October 2013.
Another cornerstone, adolescence and being a prep
student in a new school. During the session “Parenting
an Adolescent”, Prep parents were enlightened Ms.
Özlem Algan, about how they can help their students’
adaptation to prep year and the adolescence.

1 Ekim 2013 Perşembe sabahı,
TAC’nin kırk yedi hazırlık sınıfı
öğrencisi, on iki öğretmen ile birlikte
Karaduvar Mahallesi’nin 300 metrelik sahil
bandını temizlemek için kolları sıvadılar.
Öğrenciler, bundan önceki haftalarda,
çöplerin toplumlar ve çevre üzerindeki
zararlı etkilerini inceleyerek bu projeye
hazırlık yapmışlardı. Sabah, üç otobüs
dolusu TAC öğrencisi, Karaduvar Muhtarı
Habip Hazar tarafından oldukça sıcak
karşılandı. Kendisinin işbirliği ve desteği
ile öğrenciler sahilden yaklaşık 100 torba
çöpü toplayarak bölgenin temizliğini, büyük
ölçüde katkıda bulundular. Araba tekerleği
ve balık ağları gibi büyük parçaları birlikte
çalışarak toplayan öğrenciler, bunları
çöp toplama noktalarına aktardılar. Daha
sonra bölge sakinleri toplanan çöpleri
atılmak üzere bu noktalardan aldılar.

geçirdikleri günün sonunda, Muhtar
Habip Bey’in evinde, mahalle kadınlarının
yaptıkları sıkma, ayran ve ekler pastaları
ile ödüllendirildi. Muhtar Bey’in evinin
güzel bahçesi, sabahın tüm yorgunluğunu
alan çok güzel bir dinlenme durağı oldu,
konukseverliği ve cömert ikramları sahili
temizleyen bütün TAC katılımcıları
tarafından sevinç ve minnetle karşılandı.
Hazırlık sınıfı öğrencileri bir sonraki gün ise
sahil temizliği etkinliği üzerinde düşünmeye
ve bu gönüllü hizmeti gerçekleştirme
ihtiyacını içselleştirmelerine yönelik
birtakım etkinliklerde bulundular. Günün
sonunda ise, öğrenciler gün içerisinde
yaptıkları değerlendirmeleri sundular.
Kimi öğrenciler çöp atılmasını önlemeyi
amaçlayan posterler hazırladılar, kimi
öğrenciler gün içerisinde yazdıkları
denemeleri sundular. Bazı öğrenciler ise,
bir önceki gün çektikleri fotoğraflar ve kısa
kliplerle oluşturdukları video sunumlarını
arkadaşları ve öğretmenleri ile paylaştılar.
İki günlük etkinlik süresince üstün
performans ve olumlu davranışlar sergileyen
öğrencilere verilen ödüllerle proje sona erdi.
Sonuç olarak, proje son derece başarılı
geçti. Hazırlık öğrencileri bir sonraki
yıl da bu faaliyetlerini tekrarlamaya
kararlı görünüyorlardı. TAC öğrencileri
için yaşadıkları toplumla ortak
çalışmaları büyük önem taşıyor.
On October 31, 2013, 47 TAC Prep
Students and 12 TAC teacher and staff
members worked to clean-up 300
meters of local beach in Karaduvar.
The students spent the weeks leading
up to the event looking at how litter
and garbage has negative effects on
communities and the environment.
The three busses of students were
greeted warmly by the Muhtar of
Karaduvar, Habip Hazar. With his
cooperation and support the students
were able to make a large impact on the
local community by gathering nearly 100
bags of trash from the beach. Students
worked together to gather larger items
like car tires and shipping nets and
remove them to the garbage collection
points. Local community members then
collected the garbage for removal.
After a morning spent working hard
in the sun, the Prep students and TAC
staff were treated to sikma, made
by local community women, ayran
and éclairs at Mr. Hazar’s home. His
beautiful garden made a wonderful
resting spot after so many hours of hard
work and his generous refreshments
were appreciated by all of the hungry
beach clean-up participants.
The following day, Prep students
participated in activities designed to
help each person reflect on the event
and internalize the reasons needing to
volunteer to clean the Karaduvar beach
front. The day was capped off with an
assembly where students presented
the artifacts they prepared during the
day. Some students shared posters
encouraging others not to litter. Some
students presented the reflective
essay written during the day. Some
students presented video productions
they had created with photos and short
video clips from the previous day.

MÜZIK VE KÜLTÜR: DIŞARIDA DERS
GÜNÜ'NDE MÜZIK VE DANS COŞKUSU
11 Aralık 2013 tarihindeki “Dışarıda Ders”te, TAC Hazırlık sınıfı öğrencileri müzik ve kültürel deneyimlerle dolu bir gün yaşadılar. Yılın
üçüncü ünitesi olan “Kültür ve Gelenek” çerçevesinde sabah Adana
Senfoni Orkestrası'nı dinleyen öğrenciler, çeşitli orkestra enstrümanlarını öğrendiler. Öğleden sonra ise enerjik salsa dans dersleri
öğrencileri bekliyordu. Dersi, bölgenin tanınmış Latin dansları öğretmenlerinden ve aynı zamanda Hazırlık sınıfında öğrenci velimiz
olan Yelda Altun verdi. Ders o kadar eğlenceli ve başarılı geçti ki, daha
önce dansın kendilerine göre olmadığını düşünen öğrenciler bile bu
konudaki ileride dans derslerine devam edilmesini istediler. Altun’un
yoğun çabaları olmadan böyle bir sonuç alınamayacaktı. İkinci “Dışarıda Ders Günü'nün yapılacağı hafta içerisinde öğrenciler derslerde
şarkı söyleme, Beat Box vokal ve Rock’n Roll gibi popüler müzik formlarını keşfettikleri çeşitli çalışmalar yapmışlardı. Etkinliği takip eden
günlerde ise öğrencilerin müzikle dünyadaki farklı kültürlerin ilişkisi
üzerine düşünmeleri, Konuşma ve Dinleme dersi için bu konuda bir
sunum hazırlamaları istenmiştir. Bu ders projesi, öğrencilerin derste
öğrendikleri ile gerçek hayattaki deneyimleri arasında ilişki kurmalarına odaklanmaktadır.

looks forward to repeating next
year. The continued partnership
between TAC students and local
community members is an important
one that will grow in the future.
On December 11th, 2013, the TAC Prep class enjoyed a day filled with
music and cultural experiences. Tied to the third unit of the year,
Culture and Tradition, the class spent the morning learning about
the different orchestra instruments while listening to the Adana
Symphony Orchestra. The afternoon kicked up the activity level with
an energetic Salsa Dance Lesson provided generously by Ms. Yelda
Altun, who is a local Salsa instructor and mother of one of the Prep
students. The lesson was so fun and successful that students who had
previously believed dancing was not for them were asking for more
chances to dance in the future. This would not have been possible
without the hard work and effort of Ms. Altun. During the week leading
up to the second Field Day, students participated in class activities
which exposed everyone to many varieties of music including singing
and beat boxing, as well as other popular music forms like rock and
roll. After the event, students have been encouraged to consider how
music relates to different cultures around the world by preparing a
presentation for Speaking and Listening class. This course project
is focused on helping students to become reflective learners who tie
course work to real life experiences.

arsus Amerikan Koleji’nin
öğrencilerinin doğru meslek
seçmesine destek olmak amacıyla
düzenlediği Kariyer Günü, 26 Kasım 2013
tarihinde okul kampüsünde yapıldı.
Etkinliğe katılan çeşitli meslek gruplarından
14 TAC mezunu, öğrencilerle mesleklerinin
gerektirdiği kişilik özellikleri, bu
mesleği yapmak için gereken eğitimler,
mesleklerinin zorlukları, avantajları,
iş olanakları, geliri gibi konularda
deneyimlerini paylaştılar. Milli basketbolcu,
adli tıp uzmanı, mühendis, mimar, tıp
doktoru, üst düzey yönetici, avukat,
yapımcı-yönetmen ve iktisat uzmanı gibi
birçok değişik alanda çalışan mezunlar,
kendilerini yetiştiren okulun yeni nesil
öğrencileriyle bir araya gelmekten mutluluk
duyduklarını ifade ettiler. 1952 yılı
mezunundan 2002 yılı mezununa kadar
çok geniş bir konuşmacı yelpazesi oluştu.

önemli noktalara gelmiş bu kişiler, bir
zamanlar sizler gibi bu sıralarda okuyan
ve üniversite tercihlerini nasıl yapmaları
gerektiği konusunda yönlendirmeye
ihtiyaç duyan öğrencilerdi. Sizin de
zamanı geldiğinde, okulunuza gelerek
TAC’s “Career Day”, organized for Tarsus
American College students to guide
them in their career choices, was held
on 26 November 2013 at TAC campus.
Fourteen TAC graduates from various
professional fields shared with an
audience of TAC students the personal
qualities and the training required by
their jobs, as well as the challenges,
advantages and opportunities each field
entails. These graduates representing
a wide array of professions including
professional basketball, forensic science,
engineering, architecture, medicine,
senior management, law, productiondirection and economics expressed
their delight in meeting with the
new generation of TAC students. The
graduation years of the guest speakers
from TAC varied between 1952 to 2002.
In his opening remarks, Headmaster Mr.
Hanna reminded students that “these
graduates who now hold senior positions
in their chosen fields of expertise were
once students who needed guidance
and direction about their university
choices and post-secondary career
options”. He expressed his firm belief
that the current students of TAC would
too take this stage one day to address
the future students of TAC and support

Bu mesleği seçerken de ihtiyaç duyacağınız
donanımları bilerek, gerekli eğitimleri
almanız. Biz Tarsus Amerikan Koleji olarak
öğrencilerimize yollarını seçmede her
türlü desteği vermek için varız,” dedi.
TAC Mezunlar Derneği Başkanı Dr. Ali
Cerrahoğlu ise, konuk mezunlara değerli
vakitlerini ayırıp geldikleri için teşekkür
ederken, gelenekselleşen bu günün tüm
mezunlar için çok özel olduğunu belirtti.

öğrencilere, TAC mezunu olmanın ne denli
ayrıcalıklı bir şey olduğunu anlattı ve bunun

they decide on one, as indicated by the
personal experiences some graduates

make you happy, to be aware of the
required qualifications, to develop
these skills, and acquire the proper
education”. He reminded the audience
that the school is ready to provide
every kind of support to its students
towards choosing the right career path.
Dr. Ali Cerrahoğlu, the Chair of the
TAC Alumni Association, expressed
gratitude to all speakers for
taking the time to meet with TAC
students on this special day which
has now become traditional.
In his keynote address during the
opening ceremony Mr. Adem Erol,
a TAC 81 graduate and General
Manager of Forum Mersin Mall,
advised the students to be mindful
of the importance and privilege
of being a TAC graduate.

PROF. DR. MUSTAFA AYSAN: Öğrencilere deneyimli abilerini dinleme fırsatı sunması
ve geleceklerini düşündürmeye özendirmesi
açısından çok güzel bir etkinlikti. Bu konularda hem konuşmacı hem de birbirleriyle
tartışma fırsatı bulmaları önemliydi.
ORAL CANBOLAT: Okulumuza ait en
önemli değerlerden bir tanesi olan birlik beraberlik kavramını kardeşlerimize mezunlar
günü haricinde hissettirebilmek, kariyer
günleri vasıtası ile hatırlatılması bence en temel ve güçlü yanı. İkincil olarak iş yaşamında
birbirinden farklı tecrübe ve bilgiler edinmiş
abi ve ablaların bir araya gelerek kardeşlerine
tecrübelerini aktarması da ayrıca çok güzel
düşünülmüş. Etkinliğin son derece organize
ve sağlıklı bir şekilde yürütülmesini daha
somut güçlü yanları arasında belirtebilirim.
ADEM EROL: TAC’den mezun olmuş
kariyer sahibi “abi ve ablaların” iyi bir örnek
oluşturduğu inancındayım. Bizlerden gelen
yönlendirmelere daha fazla önem verdiklerini
düşünüyorum. Son derece önemli, birden
fazla amaca hizmet eden bir program.
SADUN EMREALP: Öncelikle, kariyer
gününe katılmaktan büyük bir mutluluk ve
onur duyduğumu ifade etmek istiyorum.
Yuvama yeniden kavuşmanın heyecanını, öğrencilerle birlikte sınıfta olmanın
ve deneyimlerimi paylaşmanın keyfi ile
süsleyince, tadına doyulmaz bir gün oldu...
Öğrencilerin katılımı ve ilgisi, beklentilerimin çok üzerinde gerçekleşti. Bir sunumdan
diğerine koşuşturmalarına rağmen, ilginin
son dakikaya kadar kesintisiz devam etmiş
olmasından büyük bir memnuniyet duydum.
NECATİ GÜLER: Çok başarılı buldum.
Çok düzenli ve programlı bir gündü. Sıcak
bir ortam olması da, ayrıca bir artıydı.

Özellikle tecrübe sahibi eski mezunların
mesleklerini anlatması ve öğrencilerin daha
fazla ilgisini çekerek onları motive etmesi
çok güzel. Mükemmel bir organizasyondu.
Ayrıca eski bir mezun ve bir ağabey olarak
genç arkadaşlar ile kaynaşmaktan büyük zevk
aldım. Genel anlamda mezunlar ile öğrenci
ve öğretmenlerin kaynaşması çok iyiydi.
KEREM MURADİ: Farklı dönemlerden
farklı meslek sahiplerini bir araya getirmek
ve meslek seçiminde kardeşlerimize fikir
vermek son derece olumlu. Bir mezun ve
veli olarak homecoming ve veli toplantıları
dışında okulda bulunmak çok zevkli, öğrenci
kardeşlerimizle buluşmaktan mutluyum.
İDİL ÖZTÜRK: Çok güzel bir etkinlik.
Ellerinize sağlık. Benim zamanımdan çok
daha fazla bilinçlilerdi öğrenciler. Soru soran
%20 dışındakileri de daha fazla soruya teşvik
edebilmek mümkün olsaydı keşke. Gerçi
e-maillerimiz var, daha sonra da istedikleri
zaman ulaşabileceklerini ifade ettik ama
sanki biraz çekingenlik vardı bir kısımda.
ONGUN TAN: Organizasyon süreci başarılı idi. Bilgilendirmeler hızlı ve detaylı
idi. Havaalanı transferden, ilk karşılamaya
ve planlamaya tam uyum gayet başarılı idi.
Muhteşem bir event. Hem mezunlarla, hem
öğrencilerle yeniden TAC ortamında olmak
oldukça heyecan verici. Her sene gelebilirim.
ÇAĞLAR YILGÖR: Tüm katılımcıların
TAC mezunu olması, konuşmacıların TAC
1952-2002 mezunları gibi geniş yelpazedeki mezunlardan seçilmiş olması etkinliğin
en güçlü yanlarındandı. Okul Direktörü
ve Müdürü’nün programı benimseyip her
aşamasına katılım göstermeleri de ayrıca
çok güzeldi. Hem okula geri gelebilmek
için bir fırsat, hem de mezunların okula
bağlılığını henüz daha okurken öğrencilere
gösteren bir etkinlik Kariyer Günü bence.
Hazırlanmasında emeği geçen herkese
teşekkürler. Kesinlikle her yıl devam etmeli.

and strong aspect of the Career Day,
such as homecoming event, is to feel and
be reminded of the unity and solidarity
among TAC graduates, one of the most
important values of this school, in the
current student body. Secondly, it is a
very nice thought to plan a day during
which senior graduates share their
experiences to current generation of TAC
students. The very effective organization
was another strength of the activity.

İDİL ÖZTÜRK: Congratulations to TAC on
this successful activity. The students had
a much higher awareness about future
career options than those students in my
time. I only wished that students beyond
the 20% of class could be encouraged to
ask questions. Although we exchanged
e-mail addresses, and I invited them to
contact me when they want, there seemed
to be some shyness about it.
ONGUN TAN: The process of organizing
the event was successful. There was a
quick turnaround time for information
and questions. The organization was
also strong, from the airport pick up to
detailed planning. It was an amazing
event, and an enthralling experience
to be with students at TAC. I can be
easily convinced to come every year.
ÇAĞLAR YILGÖR: The strongest points
of the activity was the participants’
being TAC graduates with graduation
years varying from 1952 to 2002. It
was also very nice to see the interest
and participation from School Director
and the Principal in every stage of the
event. Career Day is an event which is
an opportunity to come back to TAC
and to show current students the
loyalty of the graduates to this school.
I commend everyone who worked
hard to make it a success. It definitely
should continue in the coming years.

toplum hizmeti projesi kapsamında,
Silifke Belediyespor Bedensel Engelliler
Basketbol Takımı’nı okulumuzda
ağırladık. Öğle yemeğinin ardından spor
salonumuzda TAC Genç Erkek Basketbol
Takımı öğrencilerinin de yer aldığı bir
gösteri maçı yapıldı.
Tarsus Kaymakamı Sayın Hasan
Göç’ün de katıldığı organizasyonda,
maç sonunda, yaklaşık bir aydır 5
TL’ye satılan biletlerden elde edilen
gelirle alınan 4 adet klasik tekerlekli
sandalye, gelen takıma hediye edildi.
On Wednesday, 11 December 2013,
Tarsus American College hosted
Silifke Municipality’s Wheelchair
Basketball Team as part of the
school’s “Basketball Without Limits”
community service project. Following
lunch, a demonstration match
brought the wheelchair team and
TAC’s Boys basketball team together
along with an enthusiastic audience
in the school’s sports hall. At the end
of the event which was attended
by Tarsus Governor Mr. Hasan Göç,
four wheelchairs purchased with the
funds raised by selling the tickets to
the event for 5 TL, were presented
to the guest team as TAC’s gift.

RACKETS CLASH IN MERSIN BADMINTON
10-13 Aralık 2013 tarihlerinde, Mersin Tenis Kompleksi’nde
Okullararası Genç Kız-Erkek Badminton müsabakaları yapıldı.
Raketlerin kıyasıya mücadele ettiği müsabakalar sonucunda, TAC
Genç Kızlar Badminton Takımımız, katılan 28 takım arasından Mersin
dokuzuncusu olma başarısını gösterirken, TAC Genç Erkek Badminton
Takımımız, grubunda üçüncü olarak maçlarını tamamladı.
On 10-13 December 2013, the newly built Mersin Tennis Complex
hosted the badminton intermurals at the varsity level. At the end
of the matches, which were a scene to firm competition, TAC

7-18 Kasım 2013 tarihlerinde yapılan, 12 takımın katıldığı,
Okullararası Genç Kızlar Voleybol Müsabakaları’nda birbirinden
çekişmeli maçlar yaşandı. Çoğunluğunu hazırlık sınıflarının
oluşturduğu TAC Voleybol Takımımız grubunda dördüncü olarak,
gelecek sene için umut verdi.
TAC’s girls volleyball team is off to a strong start this year.
The majority of the team is made of prep students. TAC’s
performance during the volleyball intermurals, which took place
in Tarsus between 7-18 November with participation of 12 teams,
was a herald of good results for future games. The team completed
this first round by receiving the fourth place in its group.

Koleji Satranç Sporcuları üstün performans
göstererek yine başarılarını ispatladılar.

Birbirinden çekişmeli maçların yaşandığı müsabakalar
sonucunda TAC Genç Erkek Basketbol Takımımız,
grubundaki tüm maçlarını kazanarak, Mersin’de
yapılacak olan bir üst tur maçlarına katılmaya hak
kazandı.
The basketball intramurals held between 6-18 December
2013, was a scene to strong competition. TAC’s varsity team
won all the games in its group, qualifying to compete in the
upper league games in Mersin.
A CHESS BREAKTHROUGH
FROM TAC
The high school Chess Tournament took
place in Mersin on 10-12 January 2014 with
a wide participation from many private and
government schools. In this clash of smart
moves, chess players from Tarsus American
College proved their chess skills through
their strategies and with their results. In the
boys' category, Yusuf Karakaya and Cahit
Can Uzman placed third and seventh in
Mersin, respectively. Ege Su Durak received
the third place in Mersin in girls' category.

ATLETİZMDE TARSUS DÖRDÜNCÜLÜĞÜ
23 Ekim 2013 tarihinde, Tarsus Şehir Stadyumu’nda yapılan
Okullararası Atletizm Elemeleri sonucunda dereceye giren 9. sınıf
öğrencimiz Asya Tokbey, 29 Ekim Cumhuriyet Bayramı töreninde
yapılan final müsabakasına katılmaya hak kazandı. Büyük çekişmeye
sahne olan final müsabakalarında, Tarsus dördüncüsü oldu.
TAC RANKS FOURTH IN TRACK AND FIELD
TAC’s grade 9 student Asya Tokbey, who was shortlisted in the
elimination rounds which took place at the Tarsus stadium on 23
October 2013, qualified to compete in the finals on the Republic Day
29 October. TAC’s congratulations go to Asya, who received the fourth
place in the final rounds, during which she faced very stiff competition.

19-25 Kasım 2013 tarihleri arasında yapılan Okullararası Genç Erkek Futsal müsabakalarına toplamda
10 takım katıldı. Birbirinden çekişmeli maçların yaşandığı turnuvada, ilk iki sırayı alan takımlar, Mersin’de bir üst gruba katılmaya hak kazandı. Son maçına 2. lik-3. lük mücadelesi için çıkan TAC Futsal
Takımımızın Mersin Grubu’na kalabilmesi için galip
gelmesi gerekiyordu. Beraberlik durumunda, averajlara bakılacak ve rakip takım Mersin Grupları’na katılacaktı. Kısacası, tam bir final maçı söz konusuydu.
İki defa yenik duruma düşmesine rağmen beraberliği
yakalayan TAC Futsal Takımımız, galibiyet için baskısını iyice artırdığı son dakikada yenilen gole engel
olamadı ve üçüncü olarak maçlarını tamamladı.

1-2-3 Kasım 2013 tarihlerinde, Tarsus Alışveriş Merkezi’nde
yapılan, altı farklı kategoride 65 takımın kıyasıya mücadele ettiği
Streetball turnuvaları nefesleri kesti. Büyükler kategorisinde
mücadele eden TAC Streetball Takımımız, zorlu maçlar sonrasında
ikinci oldu.
TAC STANDS OUT IN STREETBALL
The streetball tournaments, held at Tarsu Mall on 1-2-3 November,
included a total of 65 teams divided into 6 different categories. TAC’s
team came through with a very strong showing by taking second place
in the tournament.
A total of ten teams competed in the indoor football
competition of the junior league between 19-25
November. In the tournament, which was a scene to
fierce competition, the top two winning teams would
qualify for the Mersin group matches. TAC’s football
team, which competed for second and third place
in its last game, needed to win the game in order to
advance to the Mersin group finals. Even in the case
of a tie, the competitor would qualify for the finals
based on the average score. Although TAC’s team
caught up and tied the score, it was not able to prevent
the goal at the last minute scored by the opposing
team. In the end, TAC’s team received the third place.

bu yıl altıncısı düzenlenen “Ertan Dumanlı
Genç Erkekler Basketbol Turnuvası” gerçekleştirildi. Turnuvaya, ev sahipliği yapan
Tarsus Amerikan Koleji Spor Kulübü'nün
yanı sıra Özel Niğde İlköğretim Okulu Spor
Kulübü, Mersin Büyükşehir Belediyesi Spor
Kulübü, Kayseri Atlas Koleji Spor Kulübü,
Adana Çukurova Üniversitesi Spor Kulübü
ve Adana Bilfen Koleji Spor Kulübü genç
takımları katıldı. Yaz antrenmanlarını
yoğun bir tempoda geçiren takımların sezon
öncesinde yapmış oldukları maçlar sahada
dostluk içinde gerçekleşti. 13 Ekim 2013
Pazar günü yapılan turnuva sonunda düzenlenen ödül töreninde, takımlara kupaları
verildi. Yerel lig öncesi hazırlık turnuvası
olması açısından bölge basketboluna katkıda
bulunduğuna inandığımız 6. Ertan Dumanlı
Basketbol Turnuvası’nda, Adana Çukurova
Üniversitesi Spor Kulübü birinci oldu.

The annual Ertan Dumanlı Basketball
Tournament is organized to honor Dr.
Ertan Dumanlı, late Assistant Chair of
the Board of Directors of the Health
and Education Foundation. Alongside
TAC’s Sports Club team, the other
participating teams of the sixth year of
the tournament, held on 12-13 October,
were Niğde Elementary School Sports
Club, Mersin Metropolitan Municipality
Sports Club, Kayseri Atlas College
Sports Club, Adana Çukurova University
Sports Club and Adana Bilfen College
Sports Club. The matches between the
teams, all of which spent an intensive
summer in a training program, were
scene to a fair competition. The top
ranking teams were presented their
trophies on Sunday, 13 November
during the award ceremony. This
year’s champion in the Ertan Dumanlı
Basketball Tournament, which is
regarded as an important preparation
for the regional basketball league prior
to the start of the season, was Adana
Çukurova University’s Sports Club.

their outstanding performances
