EPISTLE The reading is from St. Paul's Second Letter to Timothy. 2:1-10 TIMOTHY, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to satisfy the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hardworking farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will grant you understanding in everything. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, descended from David, as preached in my gospel, the gospel for which I am suffering and wearing fetters like a criminal. But the word of God is not fettered. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus with its eternal glory. ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΙΟ ΚΑΤΑ ΛΟΥΚΑΝ H´ 26 - 39 26 Επειτα από αυτά έπλευσαν και αγκυροβόλησαν εις την χώραν των Γαδαρηνών, η οποία είναι αντίπερα από την Γαλιλαίαν. 27 Οταν δε ο Ιησούς εβγήκεν εις την ξηράν, τον συνάντησεν ένας άνθρωπος της πόλεως εκείνης, ο οποίος είχε μέσα του δαιμόνια από πολλά χρόνια και δεν εφορούσε ένδυμα και δεν έμενε σε σπίτι, αλλά μέσα εις τα μνήματα. 28 Οταν όμως είδε τον Ιησούν εκραύγασε δυνατά, έπεσεν εις τα πόδια του και με φωνήν μεγάλην 5 είπε· “ποία σχέσις υπάρχει ανάμεσα εις εμέ και σε, Ιησού, Υιέ του Θεού του Υψίστου; Σε παρακαλώ, μη με βασανίσης και μη με κλείσης από τώρα στον φρικτόν Αδην”. 29 Είπε δε αυτά ο δαιμονιζόμενος, διότι ο Χριστός διέταξε το ακάθαρτον πνεύμα να βγη και να φύγη από τον άνθρωπον, επειδή από πολλά χρόνια τον είχεν αρπάξει και κυριεύσει. Οι δε άλλοι άνθρωποι, ένεκα της αγριότητος αυτού, τον έδεναν με αλυσίδες και με ισχυρά δεσμά εις τα πόδια, δια να τον φυλάσσουν, ώστε να μη επιτίθεται και κακοποιή τους άλλους. Αλλά αυτός έσπαζε τα δεσμά και ωδηγείτο βιαίως από τον δαίμονα εις ερημικούς τόπους. 30 Τον ερώτησε δε ο Ιησούς, λέγων· “ποιό είναι το όνομά σου;” Εκείνος δε απήντησε· “λεγεών”. Διότι πολλά δαιμόνια είχαν εισέλθει στον άνθρωπον αυτόν. 31 Και παρακαλούσαν τα δαιμόνια αυτόν, να μη τα διατάξη και πάνε εις τα τρίσβαθα του Αδου. 32 Ητο δε εκεί μία αγέλη με πολλούς χοίρους, που έβοσκαν στο βουνό· και τον παρακαλούσαν τα δαιμόνια να τους δώση την άδειαν να μπουν εις εκείνους τους χοίρους. Και τους το επέτρεψεν ο Κυριος (διότι κατά λόγον δικαιοσύνης έπρεπε να τιμωρηθούν με την απώλειαν των χοίρων οι ιδιοκτήται των, επειδή τους έτρεφαν, μολονότι αυτό απηγορεύετο από τον μωσαϊκόν νόμον). 33 Αφού δε εξήλθον τα δαιμόνια από τον άνθρωπον, εμπήκαν στους χοίρους και ώρμησε ασυγκράτητο όλο το καπάδι επάνω στον κρυμνόν, ερρίφθη από εκεί εις την θάλασσαν και επνίγησαν οι χοίροι. 34 Οταν δε οι βοσκοί είδαν το γεγονός αυτό, έφυγαν και το ανήγγειλαν εις την πόλιν και εις όσους συναντούσαν, από αυτούς που έμεναν στους αγρούς. 35 Εβγήκαν δε από την πόλιν οι άνθρωποι, δια να ίδουν αυτό που έγινε. Ηλθαν στον Ιησούν και είδαν τον άνθρωπον, από τον οποίον είχαν βγη τα δαιμόνια, να κάθεται κοντά εις τα πόδια του Ιησού, ντυμένος, ήρεμος και φρόνιμος, και εφοβήθησαν. 36 Είχαν δε διηγηθή εις αυτούς εκείνοι που είδαν το γεγονός, πως ελευθερώθηκε ο δαιμονιζόμενος. 37 Και όλον το πλήθος της περιοχής των Γαδαρηνών τον παρεκάλεσαν να φύγη από αυτούς, διότι είχαν κυριευθή από μεγάλον φόβον, δια την τιμωρίαν που τους επεβλήθη. Ενοχοι δε και δι' άλλα καθώς ήσαν, εφοβούντο πολύ και άλλας τιμωρίας. Ο δε Ιησούς εμπήκε στο πλοίον και επέστρεψε. 38 Παρακαλούσε δε αυτόν ο άνθρωπος, από τον οποίον είχαν βγη τα δαιμόνια, να μένη μαζή του. Ο Ιησούς όμως τον έστειλε ειρηνικά εις την πόλιν του, λέγων· 39 “γύρισε στο σπίτι σου και να διηγήσαι όσα έκαμε εις σε ο Θεός”. Και εκείνος έφυγε και διαλαλούσε εις όλην την πόλιν, όσα ο Ιησούς έκαμε εις αυτόν. GOSPEL The Gospel of Luke 8:26-39 At that time, as Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, there met him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech you, do not torment me." For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. When the herdsmen saw what happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so he got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but he sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate. Remember me, Holy One, when You come into Your Kingdom! 8 SAINTS AND FEASTS The Holy Great Martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer - October 26 Saint Demetrius was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith of Christ. When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested and kept bound in a bath-house. While the games were under way in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain friend of his, a barbarian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength of his body, boasted in the stadium and challenged the citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him were defeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor, aquaintance of Demetrius', came to the Saint in the bath-house and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the sign of the precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium, and said, "O God of Demetrius, help me!" and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of this defeat, he commanded straightway and Demetrius was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bath-house, As for Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword. Άγιος Δημήτριος ο Μυροβλύτης - 26 Οκτωβρίου Ο Άγιος Δημήτριος γεννήθηκε περί το 280 - 284 μ.Χ. και μαρτύρησε επί των αυτοκρατόρων Διοκλητιανού και Μαξιμιανού το 303 μ.Χ. ή το 305 μ.Χ. ή (το πιο πιθανό) το 306 μ.Χ. Ο Δημήτριος ήταν γόνος αριστοκρατικής οικογένειας στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Σύντομα ανελίχθηκε στις βαθμίδες του Ρωμαϊκού στρατού με αποτέλεσμα σε ηλικία 22 ετών να φέρει το βαθμό του χιλιάρχου. Ως αξιωματικός του ρωμαϊκού στρατού κάτω από τη διοίκηση του Τετράρχη (και έπειτα αυτοκράτορα) Γαλερίου Μαξιμιανού, όταν αυτοκράτορας ήταν ο Διοκλητιανός, έγινε χριστιανός και φυλακίστηκε στην Θεσσαλονίκη το 303 μ.Χ., διότι αγνόησε το διάταγμα του αυτοκράτορα Διοκλητιανού «περί αρνήσεως του χριστιανισμού». Μάλιστα λίγο νωρίτερα είχε ιδρύσει κύκλο νέων προς μελέτη της Αγίας Γραφής. Στη φυλακή ήταν και ένας νεαρός χριστιανός ο Νέστορας (βλέπε 27 Οκτωβρίου), ο οποίος θα αντιμετώπιζε σε μονομαχία τον φοβερό μονομάχο της εποχής Λυαίο. Ο νεαρός χριστιανός πριν τη μονομαχία επισκέφθηκε τον Δημήτριο και ζήτησε τη βοήθειά του. Ο Άγιος Δημήτριος του έδωσε την ευχή του και το αποτέλεσμα ήταν ο Νέστορας να νικήσει το Λυαίο και να προκαλέσει την οργή του αυτοκράτορα. Διατάχθηκε τότε να θανατωθούν και οι δύο, Νέστορας και Δημήτριος. Οι συγγραφείς εγκωμίων του Αγίου Δημητρίου, Ευστάθιος Θεσσαλονίκης, Γρηγόριος ο Παλαμάς και Δημήτριος Χρυσολωράς, αναφέρουν ότι το σώμα του Αγίου ετάφη στον τόπο 9 του μαρτυρίου, ο δε τάφος μετεβλήθη σε βαθύ φρέαρ που ανέβλυζε μύρο, εξ ου και η προσωνυμία του Μυροβλήτου. Στις βυζαντινές εικόνες αλλά και στη σύγχρονη αγιογραφία ο Άγιος Δημήτριος παρουσιάζεται αρκετές φορές ως καβαλάρης με κόκκινο άλογο (σε αντιδιαστολή του λευκού αλόγου του Αγίου Γεωργίου) να πατά τον άπιστο Λυαίο. Σήμερα ο Άγιος Δημήτριος τιμάται ως πολιούχος Άγιος της Θεσσαλονίκης. Ένα από τα πολλά θαύματα του Αγίου είναι και το εξής. Το 1823 μ.Χ. οι Τούρκοι που ήταν αμπαρωμένοι στην Ακρόπολη της Αθήνας ετοίμαζαν τα πυρομαχικά τους για να χτυπήσουν με τα κανόνια τους, τους Έλληνες που βρισκόντουσαν στον ναό του Αγίου Δημητρίου, μα ο Άγιος Δημήτριος έκανε το θαύμα του για να σωθούν οι Χριστιανοί και η πυρίτιδα έσκασε στα χέρια των Τούρκων καταστρέφοντας και τμήμα του μνημείου του Παρθενώνα. Για να θυμούνται αυτό το θαύμα, ο ναός λέγεται από τότε Άγιος Δημήτριος Λουμπαρδιάρης, από την λουμπάρδα δηλαδή το κανόνι των Τούρκων που καταστράφηκε. Cosmas & Damian the Holy Unmercenaries of Asia and their mother Theodota - November 1 These Saints were from Asia (that is, Asia Minor). After the death of their father, their Christ-loving mother Theodota reared them in piety and in all manner of virtue, and had them instructed in every science, especially that of medicine. This became their vocation, and they went about healing every illness and malady, bestowing healing freely on both men and beasts alike; because of this, they are called "Unmercenaries." And thus, having completed the course of their life, they reposed in peace. Αν δεν έχετε έρωτα για τον Χριστό, αν δεν ασχολείσθε με άγια πράγματα, σίγουρα θα γεμίσετε με μελαγχολία και κακό. -------Πίστις δεν σημαίνει, πάντοτε, βεβαιότητα για τη θεραπεία, αλλά σημαίνει πρωτίστως εμπιστοσύνη στην αγάπη του Θεού. 19 THE MEANING OF PAIN IN OUR LIFE By Abbot George Kapsanis of Gregoriou Monastery Apart from the suffering that it causes, physical, mental or spiritual pain– which entered man’s life by divine sufferance – also has positive effects for man’s earthly life and development. It is easy to philosophise or theologise about pain but it is difficult to have a proper attitude towards pain when one experiences great pain oneself. I believe it is very presumptuous to talk about pain when one has not experienced it oneself. I think of all our brothers all over the world who are suffering physical, psychological or spiritual pain. Physical pain is experienced by people as a result of disease, hardship or hunger. Psychological pain is experienced by people who are persecuted or vilified, people who are unloved or neglected by the people they hold dear, and people who suffer from unfulfilled desires or the sickness or death of loved ones, amongst other things. Spiritual pain is experienced by all those who love God and man but see that through their sins they sadden God and offend against God’s image, man. How did pain enter our lives? Of course, pain did not enter our lives because God willed it so but because He permitted it when man, through his selfish disobedience, lost the Source of Life, his Creator. Leaving behind the painless state that existed in God’s Kingdom, man found himself in another state which, since the true Life no longer reigned, was dominated by a life of decay, bound up with death, the passions and sin. The beneficial effects of pain In this new state death and pain seemed to have a positive meaning, like the other leather garments with which God clothed Adam and Eve when they left Paradise to console them in their exile. Death puts an end to evil, which would otherwise exist for ever on earth. Physical pain warns us of illness, so that an appropriate cure can be found. Doctors know how beneficial pain is. Likewise, all kinds of pain help us to become aware of our corruptibility and thus to know where our human limits lie, thus saving us from any form of selfdeification. 20 Pain helps us to review where we are heading in our lives and to bring us back to their proper centre, which is the Triune God. Pain helps us to refine our love for God, so that we might love God not for the gifts that He gives us (such as health and family happiness) but for who He is. Thus the sorely tried Job, through the way that he faced illness and his other unbearable trials, showed that he loved God for who He is and not because of His gifts. When he lay in the dirt, covered with sores after losing his ten children, he loved God just as much as when he had been prosperous. Pain also helps us to have a correct attitude towards our fellow men, whom very often, when we are not in pain ourselves, we scorn, The Suffering of Job, wrong and hurt through our selfish behaviour. Vatopedi Manuscript nr. 590, 12th Century When the pleasure with which we exploit our fellow men turns into suffering, then we understand just how destructive our illicit pleasure is. In many cases people who have experienced a great deal of pain have managed, through their pain, to find their true selves behind the masks and so thanked God for the gift of pain, even if it took the form of an incurable and painful illness. In other cases pain can help spiritually mature individuals to attain higher forms of spiritual perfection, and to support and console many needy souls. One example of this is the blessed Elder Paissios, who accepted the fact that he had the socalled ‘accursed disease’ (cancer) with joy, believing that sick people out in the world would be consoled by the fact that monks suffer as well. Thus for Father Paissios the ‘accursed disease’ became a blessing. A theological understanding of pain People who are in pain often utter the agonising question ‘Why God, why?’. I do not think that there is a human answer to this question. There is only one answer: God shared in our 21 pain in the Cross of Christ. We believe in a crucified God, which means a God who has been humbled, humiliated and tortured. On the Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem there is the following inscription: ‘Let no one speak the blasphemy that God has a son’. Not so far away stands the Hill of Golgotha, where the Son of God suffered for us all. We are not ashamed to say that we believe in a God who became man, was crucified and rose again, in a God who, out of infinite love, shared in our illness and assumed our mortal and suffering flesh in order to make it immortal. An inaccessible, withdrawn and unsociable God would be impossible to believe in, impossible to feel for and impossible to accept. Once a female high school student said to me: ‘I admire Socrates for accepting his death with philosophical resignation, but I love Christ for dying a human death’. Let us not forget Christ’s cry: ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ The sensitivity that God has to the pain felt by any of His creatures is shared by God’s people, who themselves are pained by anything bad or distressful that happens to God’s creatures. Abba Isaac says: ‘A merciful heart is a heart burning for the sake of the whole of creation – for men, for birds, for animals, for demons, and for every created thing, and by the recollection and sight of them the eyes of the merciful man pour forth abundant tears. From the strong and vehement mercy which grips his heart and from his great compassion, his heart is humbled and he cannot bear to hear or to see any injury or slight sorrow in creation. For this reason he offers up tearful prayer continually even for irrational beasts, for the enemies of the truth and for those who harm him, that they may be protected and receive mercy, and also for reptiles, his heart being full of mercy like that which fills the heart of God’ (Homily 81). Indeed, the compassion that the saints feel for God’s creatures is not a passive sympathy such as Buddhists feel but an active sharing in the pain felt by their fellows. Abba Agathon, for example, wanted to find a leper so that he could give him his own healthy body in exchange for the leper’s sick one. Ultimately, pain will always remain a mystery, closely connected with man’s boundless freedom. Now this mystery is being only partly revealed and ‘on our behalf’ by others. When our eyes are finally opened, we will see much more clearly.
