The students of the Doctoral programs in chemistry will be trained both theoretically and
experimentally in all major fields of chemistry, including Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry,
Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry and related disciplines. The lecture course includes a variety of
lectures and seminars, which will provide students a deep insight into the most fundamental
concepts, mechanisms and theories in modern chemistry. The experimental research activity of
Doctoral programs involves the solving of many chemical problems, including study of the
molecular structures and properties of various chemical compounds as well as mechanisms of their
formation.
Through this research, the students will be introduced to the modern advanced research
techniques, using the innovatively sophisticated instrumentations. Such broad theoretical and
experimental training will educate students to be highly professional and creative researchers
needed at the present-day time.

The developing of science and technology has brought immeasurable benefit to our lives, and it is
well known that applied physics has played a leading role in it. The Doctoral Program of Applied
Physics covers research fields related to physics as a fundamental science and engineering dealing
with an application of the results of physics; consisting of optics, instrumentation physics, quantum
beam and plasma physics, optical and electronic device technology, and nanotechnology.
The curriculum is organized along the above-mentioned main lines. Students in this course study

There is an ever increasing demand on the development of new innovative materials, not only as
part of the industrial infrastructure, but also to drive forth the advancement of the scientific and
technological front.
Here in the Masters and Doctoral Program in Materials Science, we use experimental and
theoretical methods at microscopic to atomic levels to propel research into the structures, the
methods of synthesis, the physical and chemical properties and potential applications of various
novel and innovative materials.
The curriculum is organized along the following main lines of innovative materials research, i.e.,
Quantum Property, Quantum Theory, Materials Property, Chemistry & Biomaterials, and Materials

The Doctoral Program in Policy and Planning Sciences covers the three areas of (1) socio- economic
systems, (2) management science, and (3) urban planning. Accordingly, the Program aims to
nurture skills in the theoretical and empirical analysis of a broad range of social and economic
issues, high-level research skills that can contribute to the formulation and execution of enterprise
management strategies and public policy, and capabilities in proposing policy for global issues
related to national land planning and the global environment. The most notable aspect of the

The Department of Computer Science provides a place for the extensive study of computer science
and application technology, which are the foundations of modern society. It also has the largest
professor group and curricula in Japan. The course has 78 professors (25 professors, 24 associate
professors, 8 lecturers, 21 assistant professors, and 2 professors affiliated with industry (as of May,
2013)) and 6 affiliate professors in partnership (4 professors and 2 associate professors) from the
National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST).
The Department of Computer Science covers broad research fields of computer science, from the
fundamental technology highly advanced technology. Professors of the course have been conducting
varied world-leading research projects. The research fields include Information Mathematics and
Modeling, Intelligent Software, Software System, Computer Architecture, Media Engineering and
Intelligent Systems.
When our university was founded, it was important to carry out high-level research and to provide
students with advanced education foundation. Today, our activities also include the re-education of
society's members, the promotion of research in academic-industrial cooperation, support of venture
industries, and regional contributions carried out at request. Beyond that, to cope with such social
requests, we are making an effort to achieve a higher level of research and education in the
Computer Science Course.

The division of Biosphere Resource Science and Technology consists of a total of 19 professional
disciplines including cooperative graduate school programs.
The first unit of disciplines, biological resource science, focuses on plant genetics and breeding,
crop science, olericulture and floriculture, pomology and postharvest physiology of fruits, animal
science, bio-production system and applied science of food resources. The objectives of this unit are
education and research on molecular biology, genetics, physiology and ecology in plants, animals
and insects from the viewpoints of practical use, sustainable agriculture production, environmental
conservation in natural ecosystems and agro-ecosystems.
The second unit of disciplines, biosphere environmental science, focuses on plant parasitic
mycology, applied entomology and zoology, environmental soil chemistry, environmental plant
biochemistry, forest ecotopology and conservation of regional resources. The objectives of this unit
are education and research on comprehensive analysis of biosphere factors and development of their
sustainable control and management systems.
Also, six professional disciplines of the cooperative graduate school program provide specified
topics on plant cell engineering, international development of biological resources, plant stress
biology, science of functional food resources, functional physiology of insects and genetic diversity
and conservation genetics of forest tree species.

Doctoral Program of Bioindustrial Sciences features education aimed at cultivating doctorate holders capable of working as

This program accepts students who have obtained a master’s degree or the equivalent with various
academic or working experiences. Students do research under guidance of advisory committees, as
well as take compulsorily exercises provided in two forums out of three, or internship subjects
instead. Students finally complete their doctoral theses through draft of research plan,
announcement of progressive report, and research presentation. After passing the review and oral
examination by the preliminary examination committee of the program and the thesis examination
committee of the graduate school, students who have acquired the prescribed credits (more than 7
credits) are awarded Doctoral Degree in Environmental Studies. It is indispensable for doctoral
thesis to add a new knowledge to the field of sustainable environmental studies and at the same
time to attain independent capacity as practical scholar. The standard time to complete the
program is three years, however, excellent students could exceptionally complete the degree in less
time.

The Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences of University of Tsukuba will offer excellent
research environment and cultivate in our scholars a spirit of creativity and cooperation so that
they can become innovative and leading biomedical researchers and educators. Research fields in

The Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies, University of Tsukuba,
undertakes various types of research in the fields of library and information science and
information-media studies, with a focus on the whole soft infrastructure for circulating knowledge
and information, which is the indispensable base for human intellectual and creative activities.
In today's society, the information network plays a vital role in the circulation and use of knowledge
and information, to which traditional paper books, materials, and academic literature have made
significant contributions. The importance and the emphasis of information in multi-media forms is
increasing. While the information network has become a place similar to a huge library, from which
we can obtain knowledge and information, we must also develop other new library functions to
allow us to find precisely information we require from a large pool of unprocessed data in the
information network. In these circumstances, we conduct a wide range of interdisciplinary research
on information and media as the fundamental technologies for all academic fields. These researches
include such features as an approach dealing with the contents of information and an approach
from the users' viewpoints, place strong emphasis on kansei (feelings).
