皆様、
前寄留者の発行から一年以上の月日が経ち、いつもお読みいただいている皆さまに
は長い休刊を申し訳なく思っていました。比較する事は出来ませんが、聖パウロは多く
の書簡を出しております。聖パウロは聖徒、MJM は一兵卒であるという以外に言葉が
見つかりません。
さてこの一年半は、MJM の強さと弱さを再認識する年月でもありました。東北の震
災復興への支援活動は、オークションとコンサートの開催により、成功の中に目的を果
たすことができました。しかし、一方で寄留者発行には手が回らず、このように休刊期
間が長引いてしまいました。ご存知のようにこの支援活動は、2012 年 3 月より開始、本
年 2013 年の春のオークションとコンサートを持って終了しました。これはメンバー各自
の大きな奉仕と努力により支えられた結果でした。MJM のような小さなグループがこの
ような奉仕活動をするにあたって、皆が全ての力を出し切ってやり遂げた感がありまし
た。
五年前に景山恭子姉がミッショナーを退任してより、MJM はロイド司祭の指導のも
と信徒ミニストリーとして奉仕してきました。其の間、Sister Faith Anthony が一年半
ミッショナーとしてお働き下さいましたが、現在は、限られたメンバーで必要とされる
奉仕活動をすべく、リーダーシップをとり MJM を支えていますが、やはり羊の群れを
導く羊飼いが必要とされています。
昨年は、寄留者発行が遅れたばかりでなく、マンハッタンの Good Shepherd 教会で
の礼拝からも参加者が減少し、いつかまた再開を願いつつも休止になっています。現在、
礼拝は、ウエストチェスターの St. James the Less 教会で、月一回行われています。今ま
で長い間 MJM を支えて下さったロイド司祭は、まだまだお元気とはいえ、93 歳のご高
齢になられ、メンバーそれぞれも年を重ね、その数も減ってきています。さらに MJM へ
のファンドも減少し、MJM の活動範囲を縮小せざるを得なくなっています。
このような困難な状態が続くと、通常では解散の方向へ進まざるを得なくなります。
事実、そんな声が何回も聞かれました。しかし、その度に、メンバーの中から力強く、
MJM の持つフェローシップの大切さ、豊かさが繰り返し述べられ,MJM はただの会衆で
はないのだ、と自覚を促されてきました。11 月には、日本語の流暢な韓国人神学生が礼
拝の指導をされ、月一回の聖書会、夏のキャンプも引き続き積極的に行われています。
聖クリュソストモスは祈りの中で「全能の神よ、あなたの御名のうちに我々が集う時、
その人数がわずか二、三人であっても、どうぞ願いを叶えるとお約束ください」と言っ
ています。
MJM は継続していきます。その限界を知りつつも、可能性を信じ、喜びを持って進
んでいきます。神への賛美と感謝

It has been over a year since our last Kiryusha. To our many faithful readers
and friends we regret the lapse in communication. St. Paul was able to fire off more
epistles in the course of a year than MJM has in the past three. Perhaps that is one of
the reasons he is a saint and we are mere foot soldiers. The past year and a half has
demonstrated both the strengths and weaknesses of MJM. Our earthquake relief
efforts were a success but in the process of achieving this success, other matters
were sacrificed, including communicating with our brothers and sisters.
More particularly, the Earthquake fundraising effort, both the initial kickoff
event in March of 2012 and the closing Silent Auction/Concert in March 2013,
proved to be a herculean effort. Our small membership was stretched to complete
this important task.
MJM is presently a lay lead organization with members stepping up to take
charge of various activities when the need arises. Since the retirement of Kyoko
Kageyama five years ago we have been indebted to Father John Lloyd for leading
and guiding us. We also were blessed to have had Sister Faith Anthony join us for a
year and a half as a missioner. Lay leadership has an appealing ring but a good
shepherd is important to keep the flock moving.
During this past year we have not only failed to publish the Kiryusha but had
to close down our service in Manhattan at Church of the Good Shepherd. We hope
this is temporary but we now have only one service a month at St. James the Less.
Father John Lloyd, our model of an enthusiastic Christian, has finally, at the age of
93, entered middle age. Our membership also is not as youthful as it was ten years
ago and our numbers have decreased slightly. Funding has been cut further curtailing
our options.
All of this could lead a normal congregation/group to decide to consider
disbanding. Indeed, the topic has come up several times. However, MJM is not a
collection of normal people. Each time the topic is broached, the importance of the
fellowship and nourishment that MJM provides has been emphatically reiterated. We
recently had a wonderful monthly service lead by a Korean seminary student, fluent
in Japanese. Our bible studies continue to be very popular and Summer Camp has
been a resounding success.
We carry on. As the prayer of St. Chrysostom states, “Almighty God,
who…dost promise when two or three are gathered together in your Name thou wilt
grant their requests.” We carry on with joy, knowing our limitations and our
possibilities. Praise and thanks be to God.

２０１３年３月１０日、MJM は東日本大震災の為の二年間に渡る支援活動を、オー
クションそしてコンサートの幕が下りると共に、盛況のうちに終了しました。震災から
の二年目を記念するこの活動で、会津若松にある「若松聖愛幼稚園」の園舎再建のため
に$7,238.34 の寄付を集める事が出来ました。また、二年間に渡る MJM とニューヨーク
教区共同の募金支援活動で総額四万五千ドルを超える額が集まりました。
幼稚園は震源地から離れていますが、百年以上の木造園舎は亀裂がひどく、福島原
発の放射性物質をさえぎる事が出来なくなり、やむを得ず再建が必要となりました。
二年に渡るこのキャンペーン中に、ＭＪＭの震災救援委員会のメンバー三名、水本正二
さん、遠山京子さん、景山恭子さんが聖愛幼稚園を訪問しました。現場の様子と、くじ
けず再建に励む東北の人々を目の当たりにし、MJM の震災救援委員達に更なる力が与え
られました。委員の他、渡邉明子さんの行動力なしでオークションの開催は可能では
なかった事、そして鈴木賀子（のりこ）さん（ピアノ）、水本正二さん（フルート）と
娘の愛実（まなみ）さん（ヴァイオリン）が演奏をしてくださった事に心から感謝致し
ます。

MJM Earthquake Relief
for Wakamatsu Seiai Kindergarten

On March 10, 2013 MJM successfully concluded its Earthquake Relief
campaign with the holding of a Silent Auction and Musical Benefit at St. James the
Less. The event, marking the second anniversary of the Great Northeastern (Tohoku)
Region Earthquake, raised $7,238.34 for the target of the campaign, the Wakamatsu
Seiai Kindergarten. The two year campaign by MJM in conjunction with the Diocese
of New York raised over $45,000.00.
Seiai yochien was not at the epicenter of the earthquake but the building itself
suffered structural damage to the extent that the cracks in the wall of the 100 year
old wooden building could no longer keep the children safe from radioactive
particles from the damaged nuclear power plant, and had to be torn down and
rebuilt.
Several members of the Earthquake Committee of MJM – Shoji Mizumoto,
Kyoko Toyama, and Kyoko Kageyama – were able to visit the kindergarten during
the course of the two year campaign. The first-hand look at the damage, as well as
witnessing the indomitable spirit of the Diocese of Tohoku in confronting the
challenge of rebuilding, gave the Earthquake Committee of MJM the energy it
needed to sustain the effort. In addition to the Committee members, Akiko Watanabe
must be thanked for putting together the Silent Auction as well as Noriko Suzuki,
Manami Mizumoto, and Shoji Mizumoto for their wonderful musical talent that they
shared.
MJM worked with and through the Diocese of New York on this campaign.
The support of Archdeacon Parnell was very helpful in outlining the nature and
extent of the campaign. Furthermore, the donations of several churches in the New
York Diocese, in particular Trinity Church of New York City, St. James the Less in
Scarsdale,
and
St.
Barnabas in Irvington,
were critical to the
success of the campaign.
The March 10,
2013 event also raised
some funds for the
victims of Hurricane
Sandy.
Whether
the
catastrophe is near or far,
MJM was and is glad to
be in a position to extend
a helping hand to our
brothers and sisters.

MJM サマーキャンプ

今年の MJM サマーキャンプは美しい天候と新しい方々の参加のお陰でとても思い出
深いものとなりました。８月２３日から２５日に自然の美しいコネチカット州の田舎、
アイヴォリトンのインカーネーションセンターで行われたキャンプは、MJM の将来に新
たな道を与えてくれたものともなりました。
毎年、参加されるジョンロイド司祭、エリザベスロイドさん、また渡邉明子さん
は残念ながら今年のキャンプに参加することはできませんでしたが、今回はタカホーの
日本教会のメンバーの方々、ロックランドのインド教会のヤコブフィリップ司祭、そし
て奥様のダーリーさんが参加され、とても恵まれたキャンプとなりました。
Lenny & Joe’s Fish Tale レストランでの金曜日のディナーから楽しいキャンプは始ま
りました。土曜日の朝の自己紹介で皆さんが仲良く打ち解け、その後のチェスターへの
小トリップ、午後には湖でのスイミング、カヤック、そしてテニス、バスケットボール
など盛り沢山でした。エセックスへも遊びに行きました。そして夜の聖書会、その後皆
さんと一緒に遊ぶメキシカントレイン。いつもの楽しい笑い声がベルコッテージに響き
渡りました。
日曜日の礼拝は、湖畔にある美しいチャペルで、コンスタンスコールズ司祭の定年
退職を記念して行われ、ヤコブ司祭によるお説教を聞きました。礼拝後はケーキとシャ
ンペンでコンスタンスコールズ司祭のミニストリーをお祝いし、その後、参加者の皆さ
んは湖で泳いだりカヤックをしたりと、日曜日の美しい日差しを楽しみました。
ストローはつ代さんと景山肇彦さんは、東京で行われた AFS の五十周年記念に出
席する為キャンプに参加することができませんでした。キャンプを企画し、出発直前ま
で色々なことを手配して下さったはつ代さんにとても感謝しています。お陰様でとても
思い出に残るキャンプとなりました。

MJM Camp and Retreat 2013

Beautiful weather and an interesting mix of people made this year’s MJM
Camp and Retreat a resounding success. Held at Incarnation Center in Ivoryton, CT,
on August 23rd through 25th, this year’s venture into the bucolic Connecticut
countryside buoyed the MJM spirit and showed us some interesting possibilities for
the future.
Although camp stalwarts such as Father John Lloyd, Elisabeth Lloyd, and
Akiko Watanabe, were not able to make it, we were blessed to have members of the
Japan Church of Tuckahoe as well as Father Jacob Philip and his wife Darly from
the Indian congregation in Rockland join us.
Dinner Friday night at Lenny & Joe's Fish Tale got things off to a fine start on
Friday night. Saturday morning was a time for introductions and reflection, followed
by a quick tour of Chester; an afternoon of swimming, tennis, basketball and a trip to
Essex; an evening of bible study and then the clatter of tiles as the Mexican train
arrived at Bell Cottage.
Sunday, a wonderful chapel service commemorating the retirement of The
Rev. Canon Constance Coles was held at the lake side with a sermon by Father
Jacob. After the service, cake and champagne to celebrate Constance Coles’s
ministry were had. Then, the happy and weary campers made for the lake where they
swam and kayaked to their heart’s content in the beautiful Sunday sun.
Many thanks to Hatsuyo Stroh who organized the camp but at the last minute
had to attend the fiftieth anniversary of her AFS group in Tokyo with fellow AFS
member Hats Kageyama. They missed a good time.

今年の夏、両親がホワイトプレインズにある Bristal に引越しを決めたため、私は
姉妹達と両親が 25 年以上暮らした家の片付けををしました。その際、父が思い出の品物
の中からある物を見せ、父にどうしたら良いかと相談されました。それは菊か桜の花の
刺繍がほどこされた美しい深紅色の司祭が身につけるストールでした。父が祖父の亡く
なる時、1950 年の初め頃、祖父から譲り受けた物でした。その時期父は日本にいて、一
時休暇でアメリカに帰国し将来の伴侶となるエリサベスに会う頃でした。父はこのス
トールを次の世代である子供達の誰かに譲ろうと思っていたのですが、子供達の中に聖
職者はおりません。
昔、バージニア州の William and Mary 大学の総長でもあり、南北戦争の時、南軍の
将軍でもあった Robert E. Lee は、私の先祖をそばに呼び、彼に将来聖職者になるよう
勧め、彼はその言葉に従いました。Robert E. Lee は聖職者としての適性がある若者達に
このように声をかけていたようです。それ以来ロイド家には代々いつも聖職者がいます。
七人兄弟であった父の場合は、そのうち五人が聖公会の司祭になっています。しかし、
現在、父は自分の子供達、甥姪も含めて誰も聖職者がいないことから、この美しい祖
父の遺品を誰に譲ろうかと決めかねていたのです。父とこの話をしている間に、私の脳
裏に突如ある人が思い浮かびました。Maria Eddy Tjeltveit, 即ち David Eddy の姉上です。
父の家系上では、彼女の母上、Tibby Tucker Eddy と父は、はとこ同士。Tjeltveit 司教は
明らかにロイド家の家系につながっている上、やはり父上の missionary のお仕事ゆえ、
私の父と同じように幼年時代を日本で成長されています。私は Maria がこの美しいス
トールを喜んで受け取って下さるだろうと思いました。思い出の品の中にあったもう一
つの品物、携帯用の小さな聖餐式用の道具は、祖父 Reverend James Hubbard Lloyd の名
前入りで、1910 年か 1920 年代に作られた物です。Maria はこれらの遺品を喜んで受けと
り、それは大変光栄なことであるとも言って下さいました。これにより、私たちの祖父、
父から受け継がれた遺品が Maria に手渡され、レガシーとして父上から受け継いだ Maria
のミニストリーに生かされる事になります。本当に大変嬉しく思っています。

Lloyd Legacy Lives On

This past summer, as my siblings and I were helping my parents pack up the
house they had lived in for about 25 years for their move to The Bristal in White
Plains, my father showed me a box of items he wasn’t sure what to do with. In
particular, he had a beautifully rich ruby red stole, embroidered along its length with
what looks like chrysanthemum or cherry blossoms. My father had received this
stole just after his father’s death in the early 1950s, sent to him in Japan shortly
before the furlough during which he would meet his future bride Elisabeth.
My father had wanted to pass his father’s stole on to someone of the next
Lloyd generation (my generation) but none of us are ordained. You see, in the late
1860s, Robert E. Lee took aside my grandfather’s grandfather’s grandfather’s ….
(I’m not sure how many generations back) to suggest that he become a priest. Lee,
president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Virginia
and former general of the Confederacy, apparently did this with many young men
whom he saw as fit candidates for the priesthood. Since then, in my family at least,
there has been at least one priest, and in the case of my father and his siblings, five
out of seven became Episcopal priests.
Since none of my father’s children, nephews or nieces have entered the
priesthood, this summer he was trying to decide whom to give this beautiful family
relic. In our conversation, I suddenly remembered Maria Eddy Tjeltveit. According
to family mythology, her mother, Tibby Tucker Eddy, was my father’s double-half
cousin, twice removed … I think. Anyway,
clearly Canon Tjeltveit is carrying on the
(extended) family tradition of entering the
priesthood. What’s more, she also grew up in
Japan as the child of a missionary, as did my
father, and will have a similar appreciation for the
symbolism of this lovely stole.
Once the idea of Maria receiving the stole
fell into place, so too did the idea of to whom to
give the other items in the box, items some of
which had also once belonged to my grandfather,
the Reverend Mr. James Hubbard Lloyd. These
other items include a small Eucharist set and other
items used for making clerical visits. We asked
Maria if she would like these, and I am pleased
that she said she would be “honored” to receive
them. I am also thrilled that my grandfather’s and
my father’s legacy (and her own father’s)
continues in her ministry.

１９５４年秋、交換留学生としてミシガン州立大学大学院に送られた私は、他の新
入生と同様に、科目選びの手続きを手伝ってくださる先生を探すことになっていた。困
惑気味の私のところに小柄な痩せ型の老紳士が近づき、強いドイツ語訛りの英語で、ご
自分から指導教授の役を名乗り出てくださった。“ああよかった！”
この先生は少々老け込んでいて背中は丸く、顔は皺だらけだった。彼は教育哲学の
教授。私は彼の講義を受講しなかったが、日に日に溜まる膨大な副読本の宿題の対処方
法、拾い読みの仕方、大切な箇所を集中して読む方法で試験を乗り切る術、提出レポー
トの作成助言など親身になって助けてくださる教授だった。時には私が履修しているク
ラスの担任に電話をかけて、留学生を穏便に扱ってくれるように頼んでくださった。
S.オッペンハイマー教授夫妻は度々私を食事に招いてくださった。おせいじにも「
おいしい！」と言える食事ではなかった。何だかぐちゃぐちゃしていて味がないものば
かりだったが、お二人は日本からの留学生を親しく、心温かく迎えてくださった。
翌年の春、「過ぎ越しの祭り」休暇で学生寮が閉まり、行く先のなかった私は教授
のお宅でお世話になった。ある夜、お二人は仲良く手を握り合い、それぞれ古びたパス
ポートを手に私に語りかけられた。「センポ杉原を知っていますか？」「いいえ存じ
ません。」お二人はページをめくり、そこには Sempo Sugihara、日本人の名前らしい署
名があった。「この方は私どもを地獄から助けあげ自由にしてくださった方です。１９
４０年の夏のことでした。もし、杉原氏がおられなかったら、私共はオーヴンの中に投
げ込まれる運命だったのです。」「オーヴン？、炉の中へ？」と私。「そうです、炉の
中へ。」「良かったですねえ、助けられて。」私の返事はそれだけだった。又ある夜の
こと、オッペンハイマー夫人は私の手をとり、話された。「ここにあるのは私共が故国
を脱出した時、唯一持ち出した宝石です。私の母のものでした。私共がナチに追われて
いる間、何時も私たちと共に旅した品物です。私共の子供達は生き延びることは出来な
かった、母も同じ運命でした。どうぞこの形見を身につけてくれませんか、私たちユダ
ヤ人の感謝の気持ち、日本人皆さんへの感謝の気持ちの印です。」「こんな美しい物を
頂いて良いのですか、有難うございます。」「どうぞ、今夜からこれは貴女の所有物で
す。貴女が身につける時には私共を思い出し、ともに過ごした素晴らしい時間を思い出
してくださいね。」
私はあの夜頂いた指輪と腕輪をつけています。長年、「過ぎ越しの祭り」の時期と
「受難週」に身につけています。昨今シリヤでは同胞同士の殺し合い、殺され合いが「
平和」の名のもとに繰り返されています。私は混乱しています。何故にと、、、このよ
うな時に、頂いた指輪と腕輪を身につけることで、安らぎが得られるような気がするの
です。
杉原千畝（ちうね、せんぽ）氏は１９３９年リトアニア、カウナスの日本領事館に
領事代理に
就任。翌年の１９４０年、６０００人のユダヤ人に日本国、一時通過ビザを発行し、ユ
ダヤ人が上海を経て、日本へ上陸、その後ユダの地、イスラエル、米国へ逃れる道を拓
いた方です。当時の日本政府の命令に従わなかった為、戦後ソ連での抑留生活を経て帰
国した杉原氏は依願退職を余儀なくされ、外交官職を失いました。
１９９５年まで、杉原千畝氏が亡くなって９年後まで、誰も彼の偉業を口にするこ
とはありませんでした。アメリカニューヨーク市在住ユダヤ人グループが幸子未亡人と
、御子息を迎えて千畝氏の生涯を称える会合を持つまで、続いてＮＹ日本クラブで展示

会と講演会が催されるまで、人々は杉原千畝氏のことは知りませんでした。２０００年
になって日本政府は杉原氏の名誉地位回復、「人道主義者、杉原大使」と公表したので
す。この方が１９５５年、私が知っているべき方だったのです。オッペンハイマー教授
御夫妻がパスポートを見せて話してくださった方だったのです。杉原大使の偉業を称え
る碑はユダヤ人の手で、エルサレムの小高い丘に収められています。
最後に二人の軍人の名前、私共の記憶に留めるため、書きとめて置きます。樋口季
一郎少将と部下の安江仙江（のりひろ）大佐です。１９３８年３月、当時の満州国に逃
れてきた二万人のユダヤ人を無事上海まで送り届けた陸軍の将校さんです。三人はたと
え国策に反しても、困難のうちにある人々に思いを寄せた日本人です。ただそれだけの
ことです。

Days with My Academic Adviser, 1954-1955

In 1954 I enrolled at Michigan State University as an exchange student. Like
other new students, I was supposed to have an academic adviser who would help my
registration process. One short skinny gentleman with strong German accent
approached me and offered to be my academic adviser. Great! I thought.
He looked rather old with his hunch back and deep wrinkles on his face. He
was a professor of Philosophy of Education. I did not take his course. He did,
however, teach me how to catch up with the heavy reading assignment; where to
skip; and where I should read carefully for coming exams. He would help me with

my term papers. He would call other instructors to give special privileges to a
foreign student.
Very often Dr. and Mrs. S. Oppenheimer invited me to their home for dinner.
A simple meal most often, and I had a hard time saying, “Oh, it is good!” as
sometimes it was mushy and tasteless. However, they were always friendly and
warmhearted to this foreign student from Japan.
The following year, at Passover vacation time, I stayed with them as
dormitory was closed and I had no place to go. One evening after dinner, they were
holding hands with each other and showed me their old passports.
“Do you know Sempo Sugihara?” “No,” I answered. They showed me the
page with signature. It looked like a Japanese name “Sempo”. “He freed us from hell
in the summer of 1940. If not for Mr. Sugihara, we would have ended up in the
oven.” “In the oven?” “Yes, in the oven.” “I am glad he helped you,” was all I
could say at that time.
One evening, Mrs. Oppenheimer took my hand and said, “These are the only
pieces of jewelry I had when we got out of the country. They belonged to my
mother. They traveled with us, escaping from Nazi. Our children did not survive nor
did my mother. Please wear them as our symbol of appreciation to the Japanese.”
“Thank you. They are beautiful, are you sure I can have them?” “Yes, they belong
to you now. When you wear them, remember us and our wonderful time together.”
Today, I am wearing the ring and the bracelet. Usually I wear them during
Passover and Passion Week to remember them. Recently, in Syria, many people have
killed each other or have been killed with no reason, but in the name of Peace. That
has made me puzzled why. Wearing the ring and the bracelet might save me from
restless feeling, I thought.
CHIUNE (SEMPO) SUGIHARA was a Deputy Consul in Kaunas, Lithuania.
In 1940, he helped 6,000 Jews by issuing transit visas to go through Japan for
Shanghai. From there the Jews dispersed to Israel and the United States of America.
By defying Japanese Government’s order he was sent back to Japan and he lost his
position as a diplomat.
Nobody talked about him until 1995, nine years after his death. At that time
Jewish survivors in New York City wished to celebrate Mr. Sugiharas’s life. His
widow and their son were in NYC in the fall of 1995, and had several lectures and
exhibits at Nippon Club. Japanese Government re-recognized the late Sugihara in
2000 as a great humanitarian ambassador. This is the man I should have known in
1955, when Dr. and Mrs. Oppenheimer showed me their passports. His memorial
plate is on the hill site in Jerusalem.
In closing, I would like to mention two other names, for all of us to remember:
GENERAL KIICHIRO HIGUCHI & COLONEL NORIHIRO YASUE. They helped

Winston Ching
MJM にとっての長い間の良き指導者、また米国聖公会アジアミニストリー(EAM)の代
表でいらした Winston Ching 司祭が 2012 年 7 月 3 日に逝去されました。Winston 司祭は
常に MJM と EAM に勇気と力を与えてくださる存在でした。
1973 年、はじめての EAM 代表としてアジアのミニストリーをまとめるお仕事をなさ
いました。穏やかで、良く通る、はきっきりとした声でお話しされ、静かなる自信を持
たれた方でした。沢山のミニストリーのために力強く働かれた功績は、大きなものとし
て私たちの心に残ります。世界各地で Winston 司祭のためにメモリアルサービスが行わ
れました。景山恭子姉は、Church of Our Savior の会報に「Winston の支え、責任感、愛を
なくしては、今日の MJM は存在しなかったであろう」と記しています。
Winston, あなたの笑顔と平和な存在は、常に私たちの心の中にあります。沢山のお礼
を申し上げます。そして、We miss you Winston!
Winston Ching
Winston Ching, long time mentor and East Asian Ministry (EAM) representative to
MJM passed away on July 3, 2012. Winston was a constant source of
encouragement and strength for all of the EAM ministries and MJM. He was the
first national missioner for EAM, bringing together the disparate Asian ministries in
1973. Soft spoken, yet clearly heard, his quiet confidence in the work of his various
ministries, was re-assuring.
Memorial services were held for Winston around the world. In the bulletin of
the service held at Church of Our Savior in Manhattan on September 18, 2012,
Kyoko Kageyama, wrote, “without Winston’s support, commitment and love, MJM
would not be here today. Thank you so much, Winston. Your warm smile and
peaceful presence will live in our hearts forever.” We miss you, Winston!

Constance Coles Retires

御退職
Constance Coles, long time stalwart of
MJM, retired this summer from her
position as Canon of the Ministry of the
Diocese of New York, a position she has
held since 2001. Prior to this she was
rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in
Harrison, New York from 1985 to 2001.
Harrison has a large and vibrant
Japanese community and MJM currently
conducts its ELS classes at All Saints.
Her interest in expanding her ministry
lead her to contact MJM and she shortly
thereafter became a member of the
board.
Her unflagging support and
enthusiasm over the last twenty or more
years have been very important to MJM.
She and her husband Bill were the prime
movers in getting the MJM bylaws
regularized. Despite her busy schedule,
she always tried to make time not only
for MJM meetings but also the various
functions held by MJM.
It was altogether
proper that Constance
celebrated the Eucharist
with MJM this summer
at Incarnation Center.
She and Bill were there
every
summer
on
Sunday
morning.
Constance has been and
continues to be, even in
retirement, an important
member of the MJM
family. We celebrate her
ministry and wish her
Godspeed
in
her
retirement.

MJM を支えて下ったコンスタンスコール
ズ司祭が、2001 年よりお働きいただいた、
聖公会 NY 教区の聖職者養成委員会長を退
職されました。コールズ司祭は、1985 年よ
り 2001 年まで NY、ハリソンの All Saints
Episcopal Church の主任司祭でおられ、ハ
リソン住在の多くの日本人のためにもお働
き下さり、現在 All Saints Church では
MJM の ESL の教室も開かれています。
コールズ司祭の常に揺るぎ無い、二十年以
上に渡る MJM への支援、特に司祭と御主
人のビルが中心になり、MJM の理事会会
則が整えられ正規のものとなったことなど
を忘れてはなりません。常にお忙しいスケ
ジュールの中でも MJM 理事会、その他の
活動にも時間を割いて下さったことに感謝
いたします。
今夏の Incarnation Center における MJM の
キャンプで、退職のお祝いをさせていただ
きましたが、毎年キャンプの日曜礼拝には
何時も御夫妻でご出席くださったことに感
謝致します。そして、
お二人はこれからも
MJM 家族の大切な一員
である事に変わりはあ
りません。

MJM ESL 昼食会
去る９月２７日、 MJM ESL
では、講師、ブラー久美子さ
んのお宅で一品持ち寄りの昼
食会が初めて開かれました。
ハドソン川の東側のウエスト
チェスター、主にハリソンや
ライにすむ生徒達にとって初
めてのリバータウン訪問とな
りました。現在，初級クラス
では主にリスニングとスピー
キングを中心に学び，中級ク
ラスでは ESL 新聞を用いての
ディスカッション及び，日常
会話に不可欠な熟語動詞を勉
強しています。１１月１７日には、MJM ESL は教室を提供して下さっているハリソンの
All Saints' Church の恒例エンジェルフェアーに今年も参加、手作りの日本食、折り紙、
クラフトなどを販売奉仕しました。
MJM ESL Potluck Luncheon
On Sep 27, the MJM ESL (English as a Second Language) classes held their first
potluck luncheon at the home of Kumiko Buller, who teaches ESL. For many
students who live on the other side of Westchester, in Harrison and Rye, it was the
first visit to the Rivertowns. Presently, the Beginners' class centers around listening
and speaking while the Intermediate class focuses on discussion using an ESL
newspaper and learning common phrasal verbs. On November 17 the MJM ESL
participated in the annual Angel Fair at All Saints' Church in Harrison where the two
classes are held every Tuesday.

7 月の初め、ファーザー・ジョンとエリサ
ベス御夫妻が、ヨンカースの御自宅から
New York, White Plains にある介護施設 The
Bristal に移られました。
何人かの役員が御夫妻を訪問し、MJM か
らのお花をお贈りしました。
The Bristal は介護サービスの行き届いたと
ても美しい所で、ファーザー・ジョンとエ
リサベス、彼らのお子様たちもたいへん喜
んでいます。

moved from their Yonkers home to an
assisted living facility, the Bristal in
White Plains, New York at the beginning
of July.
Several board members paid them a visit
and a basket of flowers was sent to them
by MJM.
The Bristal is a beautiful place with
good care and services.
Fr. John,
Elisabeth, and their children are very
happy with it. We ask God for his
blessings on this new chapter of Fr.
John’s and Elisabeth’s life at the Bristal.

BIKING ACROSS THE UNITED STATES FOR CANCER
Rachel Eddy will be biking across the United States this summer with thirty other
college students to raise money to support cancer victims and their families. The
bike tour is organized by the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults and starts in
Baltimore and ends in San Francisco. Rachel is trying to raise $6,000 for this
cause. Donations can be made by going to her profile under
