Opening our doors to the seniors and
families of San Mateo County is a key
mission for Kimochi in 2014. Raising
$2.5 million to cover the costs of
construction and equipment is a
huge challenge. But new friends and
long-time supporters of Kimochi, as
well as the community of San Mateo
County, have been rolling up their
sleeves to pitch in and help. Every
contribution, large and small, counts
toward that goal and we are getting
there, donation by donation.

Grant. For every dollar raised for the Kimochi San Mateo
Capital Campaign between November 1, 2013 and May 17,
2014, Mary Ishisaki generously offered
to match the gift, dollar-for-dollar, up to
$100,000. And people are responding

A Message from the Executive Director
As we enter the Spring season, I am pleased to inform you that our agency is growing and working
hard to open our Kimochi San Mateo facility! This special Capital Campaign newsletter highlights
the many accomplishments made since we purchased 453 North San Mateo Drive in October
2012. We are busy establishing and cultivating relationships with many Peninsula organizations,
churches, political officials, families, and seniors who are working with us to build support for
our programs. If you have already provided support for the campaign, my heartfelt thank you!
If you have yet to give, I hope this special edition encourages you to consider making a gift to
ensure our community can continue extending and expanding care to families throughout the

Kimochi Newsletter and wanted to help. I would like to make my gift in
memory of my father, mother and grandmother who lived and worked
in San Mateo. My father, Dr. George Shiyogo Takahashi, was a dentist
who practiced in San Mateo, my mother, Tsuny Kinoshita Takahashi, was
a volunteer driver for Japanese American senior citizens in the ‘60s and
‘70s. And my grandmother, Nui Utsunomiya Takahashi, was a pioneer
Nihongakko teacher, first in the Sacramento Valley and then in San Mateo in
the 1920s. Please let me know when the building is finished. I’d like to see
it when I come to the Bay Area to visit family and friends.”

For every dollar raised for the Kimochi San Mateo Capital
Campaign between now and May 17, 2014, Kimochi Board
Member, Mary Ishisaki has generously offered to match the
gift, dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000. “The Mary Ishisaki
$100,000 Challenge Grant is a wonderful opportunity to give,
and in essence doubles your donation,” say Campaign CoChairs, Sandy Mori and John Noguchi. “We are endeavoring to
make the Kimochi San Mateo project a success for the families
and seniors of San Mateo County and every dollar counts.” Kimochi San Mateo will be a tremendous asset for families
concerned about senior care and support for the elderly.
We have an opportunity to build something grand for our

By now, you may have heard that San Francisco Japantownbased Kimochi, Inc. has purchased a building for a 14-bed
senior care facility at 453 North San Mateo Drive in San Mateo.
Kimochi has embarked on a Capital Campaign to raise $2.5
million to cover the costs of renovation and equipment. It is
a major undertaking and they are working diligently to raise
those funds to meet a late 2014 open date.
What makes Kimochi San Mateo special is their operating
philosophy that provides programs and services in the Japanese
tradition of respect and care for the elderly. Since 1971,
Kimochi has evolved into a nationally-recognized community
service organization that delivers culturally-sensitive programs
and services to 3,000 Bay Area seniors and their families. Now,
Kimochi is bringing that same philosophy of care to San Mateo
County – and they need our help!

Kimochi San Mateo Programs

and translation services. We provide additional help through
caregiver support groups and training, caregiver assessment,
counseling, and case management.
It is fitting that 2014 is the Year of the Horse because Kimochi’s
activities in San Mateo County are taking off at a gallop. Our
programs officially started in 2009 through a contract with San
Mateo County Aging and Adult Services which provides family
caregiver support services to residents of cities in the central
and northern parts of the county. Over the last few years,
the number of families we have been able to assist with their
caregiving duties has grown
exponentially.
Kimochi, Inc. staff has also conducted caregiver outreach at our
popular annual Show N’ Shine Car Show. Staff attends health fairs
and events presented by our community partners to strengthen
our service networks. Monthly educational
meetings presented by Kimochi staff or
expert guests provide useful information
and assistance to family caregivers. Some of
the topics and past presenters have included

And, within the rapidly growing group of elderly Asians
65+ years in San Mateo County, Japanese have the highest
percentage of elderly (15.1%) compared to Chinese (10.6%)
and Filipino (10.9%), the two other major Asian ethnic groups
in the county.* As these seniors continue aging, their physical,
psychological, and emotional needs will increase as will the
demand for the quality and culturally sensitive care that
Kimochi, Inc. consistently provides.
For family and friends that are looking for specific services to
assist their loved ones at home, an assessment appointment can
be scheduled with Kimochi staff to understand what services
are needed and to develop a plan of care. When available, we
can introduce families to Kimochi services to support them
and their loved one, and if necessary we can refer to trusted
agencies in the Peninsula. For additional information, please

Through its mission, Kimochi works hard to promote the
quality of life and independence of seniors, reduce their
health risks through education, and encourage access to basic
health care and mental health services that are available in

A Gourmet Meal For a Great Cause
Served Up by San Mateo JACL!
A spirited, live auction proved a great success for the Kimochi San Mateo
“Building On Our Tradition” benefit held at the College of San Mateo in
August 2013. The auction was organized by Diana Okamoto and one of the
auction prizes was a ‘Gourmet Dinner for 10 – Value: Priceless’ hosted by the
San Mateo JACL Board of Directors. It was collectively bid on by a group of good friends who ‘cashed in’ on a
recent evening and enjoyed a great time, a great meal, for a great cause. Sous
chefs were San Mateo JACL board members who prepared a wonderful meal
with wine pairings orchestrated by executive chef, Diana Okamoto. サンマテオJACLによる素晴らしい目的のためのグルメディナー！
昨年8月にサンマテオカレッジで開催された、気持会サンマテオの

“Four Seas” Fundraiser Dinner
On March 1st, Paul Chin, Kimochi Board President sponsored an exclusive
7-course Chinese dinner at the Four Seas restaurant in San Francisco’s
Chinatown. Paul is a gourmet cook himself and his guests, a total of ten
tables including Kimochi’s Board of Directors and their families & friends,
experienced a delicious evening for a great cause – proceeds from the dinner
go directly to the Mary Ishisaki $100,000 Challenge Grant. ポール・チンさん

Continuing Generations of Caring
Since 1971, Kimochi, Inc. has developed and promoted an intergenerational philosophy of care for seniors and families from
San Francisco’s Japantown. Our current continuum of care includes the following programs and services:

Administration
The Administrative building is owned and operated by the agency and houses the administrative staff. We have approximately
200 volunteers assisting us each year in our programs.
Social Services Program
Our staff is bilingual in English, Japanese, and Korean and provides language
translation, information and referral, counseling, family caregiver support, case
management, homecare registry assistance, and transitional care support for patients
being discharged from the hospital.
The program annually assists 600 seniors and families providing 5,000 hours of
services.
Club Nikkei
This membership based program is designed to outreach and provide healthy,
independent seniors with a range of social activities and excursions to enjoy. Staff
provides members with an activity calendar and transportation is included.
Home Safety Service
Staff schedules and conducts home safety assessments for San Francisco homeowners
to help them identify potential and existing safety issues that could compromise their
ability to live safely and comfortably at home.

The Kimochi Lounge, located within Japan Center, is the agency’s original site.
Seniors come to “the lounge” to catch up on community news and socialize. The site
also houses a book and video library where seniors can check out materials for free.
In 2007, a new senior information and resource section was added to have important
health, safety, nutrition, and caregiving resources available for seniors and families. In
July 2009, we opened the lounge for seniors and families on Saturdays.
This site is annually visited by 5,000 seniors, families, and visitors from throughout
California and other countries.

(Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California – JCCCNC)
Nutrition
A nutritious well-balanced Japanese style hot lunch is provided 5 days a week. Any
senior 60 years of age or older is welcome. A five week menu is produced by staff,
and our nutritionist ensures each meal is healthy, nutritionally well-balanced and
adequately proportioned for seniors. An average of 300 meals is served daily.
The program annually serves 65,000 congregate and 30,000 home-delivered meals.
Home Delivery Program
Seniors who are physically unable to travel to the senior center due to a disability or
illness, can receive our Japanese style hot lunches at home. Each recipient is required
to complete an eligibility assessment on a quarterly basis.
The program annually serves 130 homebound and frail seniors 29,000 lunches.
Senior Center
In addition to enjoying lunch at the nutrition program, seniors are encouraged to
participate in activities at the center. Staff and volunteers plan and offer a variety of
activities on a monthly basis. We have morning exercise classes, a ceramics class,
group singing classes, odori, bingo, arts and crafts, day trips, and overnight trips.
The program annually serves 300 seniors and offers 700 hours of exciting activities.
Transportation
Safe and reliable door-to-door transportation services are provided to help seniors
maintain a connection with their community and friends. Transportation can also be
requested for medical trips and grocery shopping.
The program annually assists 150 seniors receive 10,000 rides.

Adult Social Day Care Program (License # 380504138)
This program is licensed by the State of California to provide seniors in need of
supervision and support with a schedule of social and recreational activities in a safe
and secure setting.
The program annually assists 40 seniors receive 21,000 hours of services and
activities.
Residential/Respite Care (License # 380504099)
This program is licensed by the State of California to provide 24 hour non-medical
care to ambulatory seniors. We have the capacity to house 20 seniors in either single
or shared rooms.
