Searching Zasshi Kiji Sakuin 雑誌記事索引 (Japanese Periodicals Index) Through the NDL-OPAC at the National Diet Library http://opac.ndl.go.jp You do not need to login unless you intend to use the online ordering system. Also, please note the times that the system is down. It is not possible to bookmark a specific database, you must book mark at this top level (http://opac.ndl.go.jp). Coverage in Zasshi Kiji Sakuin begins in 1948. New records are added weekly. There are almost seven million citations from over sixteen thousand journals, although not all are still in print and not all have been indexed as far back as 1948. If you want to check on the exact coverage, click on the listing of journals indexed (the blue link under the button). There is an English language interface and English help screens, but if you are searching for Japanese language materials you must use Japanese (not romaji). Also, you should note that there is no online ordering capability in the English language interface. To start, click on the index you want to search. In this case, Zasshi Kiji Sakuin is the third one down on the right hand side. The time default is set to articles published since 2005, so click on the other boxes if you want to expand the range of your search. There is no keyword search field, but you can keyword search by typing one or more terms in the 論 題名 rondaimei field. If you want to specify certain date ranges, use Western numbers (use 1 byte/ASCII numbers). This is true with names as well as terms in the title field. If you are searching for articles by Setouchi Jakucho, you would put her name in the 著者 chosha (author) field. If you are looking for articles about her, put her name in the rondaimei field. If you are not happy with your results, modify your search by clicking on the 絞り込み／再検索 shiborikomi/saikensaku button. Using the shiborikomi button keeps your initial search terms so you don’t have to retype them. You can refine by increasing or decreasing the range or dates by clicking on the date buttons. Advanced Search Techniques Browsing articles in a particular journal: The easiest way to browse a particular journal is to search by the ISSN number and a particular date range or volume number.
