Summer Time ends this month in Finland, changing into a severe winter season soon. The economic environment surrounding Finland seems to be getting severer as well, according to Ratings agency Standard & Poor’s who now downgraded Finland’s sovereign debt rating to AA+ from AAA on 10/10 Friday. Responding to such an issuance, Finland’s prime minister, Alexander Stubb, told CNBC on 10/13 Monday, “A little bit paradoxically I guess one could say that the iPhone killed Nokia and the iPad killed the Finnish paper industry, but we’ll make a comeback.” (ref. http://www.cnbc.com/id/102081405) I could personally understand that Mr. Stubb could not help commenting on Apple, however, we see another side of the reality. Nokia Networks in Japan is actually receiving accumulating benefits from the current mobile telecommunications market i.e. its data traffic growth is rapidly generated by the smart phone penetration and its applications. Apple and Google are surely strong drivers who have been accelerating such traffic since 2007 or 2008 day and night. This phenomenon should be commonly shared globally and this seems a real paradox when you think back what happened to Nokia in 2014 April i.e. selling out phone business to Microsoft. Nokia phones were divested to Microsoft as of April 25th 2014. The remaining part of Nokia – or what can be called the “new” Nokia-invests in technologies important in a world where billions of devices are connected. Since the divestment of the devices business, we are focused on three businesses: • network infrastructure software, hardware and services, which we offer through Nokia Networks • location intelligence, which we provide through HERE • and advanced technology development and licensing, which we pursue through Nokia Technologies. Each of these businesses is a leader in its respective field. We are talking about Nokia Networks in Japan in this article. (Prime Minister Stubb did refer to it in his comment to CNBC, “And actually a new Nokia is emerged in terms of (Nokia) Networks,” however, this quote had not been translated to the Japanese and not mentioned by the Japanese media… never mind these things happen and that is why you need a team in the field!) Back to mobile telecommunications market in Japan, smart phone penetration is 54% and each smart phone user consumes 2.4GB/month according to MIC report for 2013. Data usage per head has been yearly increasing for 20-25% over the last few years. Again such a traffic usage increase has been rapidly driven by smart phone applications and services such as video, music and photos. Smartphone also played a critical role when Japan did suffer 2011.3.11 East Japan Earthquake. It was a clear occasion that smart phone had proven its position as a new lifeline. Smartphone was the device which did keep connecting the people even under such a disaster. This trend would be further accelerated by another new smart device, “wearable computer or wearable device”. This may newly create a community driven market, which may accelerate SNS or generate a new kind of communications and data traffic. “Mobility” is the keyword for the innovation for the years to come, especially in smart device area, as you may all agree with. Nokia Networks presents “Technology Vision 2020” since 2013 where we are targeting to support the individual data use of 1GB/day. This vision would be definitely required to achieve due to the traffic use growth we face every day. Such growth concurrently reminds us the importance of quality we provide to the market. As one of the mobile broadband infrastructure vendors, it is our responsibility to support the mobile network with appropriate and sufficient “Efficiency x Spectrum x Density” to provide the quality. This can be more efficiently and economically supported by Software-defined networking (SDN*) in the near future. We are also developing personalized network to manage “Customer Experience” to meet your expectation. What had you checked before you left home for work today? You turned off all the switches for the electricity, maybe did the same for gas and the water? Got your house key and a car key? Then checked a smart phone or device in your hands, right? If we have left a smart phone or device behind ourselves, we feel lost all day along. After all, there is a Chinese saying; “Good can come out of a misfortune – 人間万事塞翁が馬”. You never know what can be your next chance! Let us keep looking around ourselves in a most positive way. *Software-defined networking (SDN) is an approach to computer networking that allows network administrators to manage network services through abstraction of lower level functionality.
