Tyler Rose Parade
Block of the Month / Paula Ivers &
Julie Cefalu
Paula and Julie will begin
their fourth block of the
month quilt together in
January. This year’s stunning quilt, Tyler Rose Parade, comes from designer,
Deb Luttrell, of Stitchin’
Heaven, and features 30
beautiful, pieced blocks—
15 unique blocks and 15 of the same alternating
block. Each block is named for and celebrates a rose
from Tyler, Texas, the rose capital of America. The
finished quilt measures 88” x 102”. This program is
designed for the advanced beginner to intermediate
quilter and will focus on precision cutting, piecing
and pressing so that this quilt and all your future
quilts will go together in a snap. You will learn foolproof accurate rotary cutting skills, how to obtain
the perfect ¼” seam allowance, and pinning and
pressing techniques. In addition, Paula and Julie
will also share with you other quick, easy and accurate methods for making elements of various other
quilt blocks (e.g., half-square triangles, triangles
within squares and divided rectangles) which you
may not even know exist! This is the perfect opportunity to hone your quilting skills, learn new techniques for faster and easier piecing and make this
beautiful quilt under the guidance of Paula and
Julie! Classes meet on the first Friday afternoon and
Saturday morning of each month—you can choose
which session works best for you. One-time fee of

A word about copyrighted material
Many of the classes we offer require you
to purchase a book or pattern. Since the
information contained in those books and
patterns is considered “copyrighted”
material, it is illegal to photocopy all or
any portion of the information, even just
to share with a friend to use during a
class. The Granary gladly offers all paid
students a 10% discount on all class
supplies, including books and patterns.
We all want to support the creative
efforts of the hard-working designers
who develop our favorite quilt patterns
and encourage them to continue to
publish and create. In order to do that,
we must properly compensate them for
sharing their ideas with us by purchasing
their books and patterns. Thank you for
your cooperation and consideration!

Sewfie’s Corner
Sewfie has been with us for over two years now and as we’ve gotten
to know her better we thought we’d let you in on a few of her secrets
necessary for successfully longarm quilting your quilt. It starts at the
beginning with the quilter!....you!
When you’re ready to have your quilt top quilted please keep in mind
the following:
1. Be sure your quilt backing is 6-8” larger which means there will
be 3-4” available on each side and the top and bottom. Why you
ask....this is so it can be pinned onto the canvas leaders attached to
the rolling bars and so the clamps have room to grip the sides.
2. Make sure your quilt top is as flat as possible. This starts earlier in
the process! Be sure to use consistent 1/4” seams throughout.
Most importantly, measure your quilt and cut your borders to
size. Measure your quilt three times....side, middle, side....and
take the average of those three measurements as a guide to cutting your border. You will reduce the “wave” factor on your borders dramatically and Sewfie will love it!
3. Clip the threads on the underside and top! With many of the new
“modern” quilts a very light background is used. If your threads
are all over the back they may show through after quilting. It’s
impossible to get them all but go over the back with small tread
nips—you’ll be happier with the end result!
4. Backing - press the seam open after piecing...you will avoid a
lump! If you do piece your backing using scraps, please be aware
that every effort will go into making sure the quilt top is centered.
However, when all three layers are on the rollers and rolled
(backing, batting, quilt top) there may be some shifting. It can also
be off center if the quilt top is not quite square.
Sewfie has enjoyed “hanging out” at The Granary! She has been given
an upgraded status and is now visible throughout the store! We are
very proud of the fact that the turnaround time for quilting your quilt
is no more than 2-3 weeks! At this time we will continue providing
only edge-to-edge quilting services so that we may continue to get
your quilts back to you as quickly as possible!
Thank you for all your support! Sewfie is looking forward to quilting
many more of your gorgeous quilts in 2013 and beyond!
