Volume 12 Issue 3 Sewfie’s Corner Sewfie has been with us for over two years now and as we’ve gotten to know her better we thought we’d let you in on a few of her secrets necessary for successfully longarm quilting your quilt. It starts at the beginning with the quilter!....you! When you’re ready to have your quilt top quilted please keep in mind the following: 1. Be sure your quilt backing is 6-8” larger which means there will be 3-4” available on each side and the top and bottom. Why you ask....this is so it can be pinned onto the canvas leaders attached to the rolling bars and so the clamps have room to grip the sides. 2. Make sure your quilt top is as flat as possible. This starts earlier in the process! Be sure to use consistent 1/4” seams throughout. Most importantly, measure your quilt and cut your borders to size. Measure your quilt three times....side, middle, side....and take the average of those three measurements as a guide to cutting your border. You will reduce the “wave” factor on your borders dramatically and Sewfie will love it! 3. Clip the threads on the underside and top! With many of the new “modern” quilts a very light background is used. If your threads are all over the back they may show through after quilting. It’s impossible to get them all but go over the back with small tread nips—you’ll be happier with the end result! 4. Backing - press the seam open after piecing...you will avoid a lump! If you do piece your backing using scraps, please be aware that every effort will go into making sure the quilt top is centered. However, when all three layers are on the rollers and rolled (backing, batting, quilt top) there may be some shifting. It can also be off center if the quilt top is not quite square. Sewfie has enjoyed “hanging out” at The Granary! She has been given an upgraded status and is now visible throughout the store! We are very proud of the fact that the turnaround time for quilting your quilt is no more than 2-3 weeks! At this time we will continue providing only edge-to-edge quilting services so that we may continue to get your quilts back to you as quickly as possible! Thank you for all your support! Sewfie is looking forward to quilting many more of your gorgeous quilts in 2013 and beyond! Page 7 ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED ♥ 1326 S.
