The story of Where Wolves Fear to Prey is set predominantly in the
UK and Japan, with secondary characters and locations in Europe
(France, Spain). Loaded Films producer Eiko MIZUNO is Japanese
and writer-director Jason GRAY is a longtime resident of Japan with
UK citizenship. We are therefore looking for European and Japanese
partners to collaborate with Loaded Films and France’s La Ferme
Productions (currently attached) to realize this powerful project.

SYNOPSIS シノプシス
A young British girl attending university in Spain is brutally murdered
and cannibalized by Japanese exchange student Teppei SUGAWARA,
devastating her middle-class family. After only two years in
psychiatric care her killer walks free in Japan. Her younger brother
Jeremy grows up mentally anguished by the events, eventually going
to prison after retaliating against people who ridicule him. While
incarcerated, Jeremy comes to the conclusion that the only way
to restart his life is to eliminate SUGAWARA from the face of the
earth. After being released, Jeremy journeys to Japan, enlisting the
aid of a female interpreter to help him find the target of his trauma.
He infiltrates a French film crew shooting a documentary exposé
on highly reclusive SUGAWARA as the mass media in the UK and
elsewhere refocus on the crime on its 20th anniversary. The closer he
gets to SUGAWARA the more he questions whether his mission will
truly bring him and his family the peace he believed it would...

Jason GRAY earned a degree in film at Toronto’s Ryerson University and has
worked in the Japanese film industry since 2001 as a translator, journalist and
consultant. Served as a correspondent for Screen International 2006-2013.
He wrote and directed narrative short film Yukuharu in 2012 and served as an
associate producer on Japanese feature Blindly In Love in 2013. Co-founded
Loaded Films in 2011.

Director’s Statement 監督による製作意図
In 2001 I met a Japanese writer deeply involved in film and
transgressive subculture. He related the case of Issei SAGAWA, a
man who killed and cannibalized a Dutch student in Paris in 1981
and was free. I was aware of SAGAWA but not the grisly details of
his crime, introduced to me by the author through a shocking manga
created by SAGAWA himself. He had also co-authored books with
SAGAWA about crime and considered him a friend. It was difficult
to comprehend. Being familiar with extreme cinema and true crime
myself, it became a definition of what I considered “going too far.”
I wrote an in-depth essay on the episode which gained attention
across the internet. I subsequently received requests to help foreign
productions get in touch with SAGAWA, which made me examine
his glorification. Additionally, living in Japan during the murders of
Lucy BLACKMAN and particularly Lindsay HAWKER, I witnessed
the frustration victims’ families felt at being disconnected by
distance, language and culture. I covered the HAWKER case and
communicated with Lindsay’s family on several occasions until her
killer’s arrest. Where Wolves Fear to Prey combines truth and fiction
to tell a compelling story of family and revenge, spanning three
countries and two decades in the lives of people on three sides of an
unbelievable crime – the victim, the perpetrator and the media.

佐川自身が描いたマンガを通して、
その場で知ることとなった。
佐川
は仕事仲間でもあり友達でもあると聞き、
正直、
理解に苦しんだ。
私自
身、
限界に挑んだ映画や犯罪ノンフィクションに親しんできたが、
これを
機に、
犯罪の真実を知る為ならば、
どこまで犯罪者に踏み込むべきなの
か再考したように思う。
その後に、
海外メディアを通しても、
佐川を称賛
する声があることも知った。

Eiko MIZUNO began her career at the Toronto International Film Festival as a
festival publicist (1998-2008) and the International Film Festival Rotterdam
(2000-2004) promoting Japanese/Asian cinema. In Japan, she worked at
TOKYO FILMeX and the Tokyo International Film Festival in various capacities
as well as Studio Ghibli (int’l dept). As president of Loaded Films she is active
in publicity (Why Don’t You Play In Hell?, Penance, The Cowards Who Looked
to the Sky), translation and now producing.

一方で、
同時期に英国人女性が日本で他殺される痛ましい事件があり、
距離、
言葉や文化の違いから起こる失望や苛立ちを抱える家族の姿を
目の当たりにした。
一人の被害者のご家族とはメールのやり取りもし、
日本の進捗状況を伝えていた。
このような経験を通し、
私が被害者の家
族ならどうするだろうかと考え始め、
今日に至る。
本作品は、
異国にて犯
罪の犠牲となった家族の苦しみと復讐への想いをパワフルに語るとと
もに、3カ国２世代にまでおよび影響を与えた事件を、
異なる立場
（被害
者、
犯罪者、
メディア）
から、
描き出すフィクションである。
