Drawing on the magical and mythical, JaneтАЩs beautifully stitched, sketched and collaged creations often feature half human-half, half-animal creatures, wild women and figures of the imagination. Transformation is a recurring theme and fairy tales, myths and legends are a source of inspiration. The Bird Wife (detail) Jane has a particular interest in feminist rewriting of fairy tales. Originally many of these tales were not bedtime stories for children, but were told for women, by women, and contained advice on suitable marriage partners and warnings about life. JaneтАЩs work, Cloth of Honour, explores a myth common in a number of cultures; a story of a man who steals a womanтАЩs feather cloak so she cannot fly away, her search for it and her freedom. Jane resides near Hamilton and is guest selector for Creative FibreтАЩs National Exhibition this year. See an exhibition of her work at the fair where she will demonstrate on selected days. 10 www.craftfair.co.nz Above: Cloth of Honour (detail) Below: Hunting тАУ Hiding (detail) September 8 тАУ 11, 2011 11 Quilts Aotearoa is a stunning display of around 100 quilts presented by The Aotearoa Quilters National Association of New Zealand.
