Bobby Joseph Wine Sommelier Wine Chronicles Chardonnay Wines made from Chardonnay are finely textured, beautifully aromatic, long on the finish, and they age particularly well. Their bouquet is dominated by hazelnut, honey and hawthorn or acacia, usually underlined by notes of butter, brioche and toast. Chardonnay often displays lively scents of ripe lemons, tropical fruit, especially pineapple, and melon in Australia. Sauvignon Blanc Sauvignon Blanc has a very characteristic aroma, best described as lemon, grapefruit, Muscat, peach, blackcurrant bud, linden, passion fruit, fresh cut grass, gooseberries blackcurrant bud or boxwood. Sauvignon is the king of the dry white wines of Bordeaux, where it contributes its acidity and freshness to blends with Semillon and Muscadelle. Riesling Riesling wines may be dry or sweet but they are always full-bodied, wellstructured and aromatic. Their delicate, distinguished aromas are composed of subtle notes of lemon, Muscat and spices. One of the most features of older Riesling is the smell of petrol. Riesling demi-sec and sweet wines are teeming with grapefruit and orange notes after a while in bottle. Pinot Gris Pinot Gris wine aroma is often spicy and honeyed, with floral and fruity notes, such as pear and apple, and often a hint of mushroom. The Pinot grigio style of Italy is a light-bodied, often lean wine that is light in color with sometimes spritzy flavors that can be crisp and acidic. Viognier Viognier wines are golden, dry, soft and full, with an extremely rich nose of Muscat, apricot, acacia, honey, violet. The white grape alone gives rise to Condrieu wines and blended with Syrah, the red grape, to make Côte Rôtie. Gewürztraminer Gewürztraminer is an extremely aromatic wine; the most frequent notes are lychee, rose and clove. Late harvested can present scents of apricot, peach, tropical and candied fruit. This well-known Haut Medoc grape is remarkably well structured and elegant displaying intense aromatic complexity. Young wines smell of red fruit: blackcurrant, raspberry and sometime bilberry in particularly sunny years. As the wine matures in new oak barrels, it becomes more supple can develop superb bouquet such as coffee, caramel and dark chocolate. Merlot Merlot grape are plums, leathery, fruitcake, gamey and meaty. The tannins may be softer and lesser bodied than the cabernet. Other characters may be blackcurrant plum spice and coffee. Often blended with other Bordeaux grape a variety this grape is softer and with not so stringent tannins. Syrah/Shiraz The wine from shiraz are powerful and full bodied, with concentrated aromas like raspberry, blackberry, licorice, black pepper, plum, spice and prunes. With maturation earthy notes appear adding complexity and further interest of wet leather, game flavors and aromas are often present. Pinot Noir Pinot noir wines are light in tannins, have aromas and flavors of strawberry, cheery, plum Raspberry, mushrooms, earthiness and beetroot. Red berry characteristics increase in increasing ripeness of the fruit. Other notable flavours on further maturation include earthiness, barnyard, straw, spicy and nutty with maturation. Zinfandel The wine tends to exhibit a dark purple hue with hints of strawberry, plumb, raisin, spice, leather, and tar. Zinfandel has a mouth-filling characteristic that is sometimes described as being jammy or chewy. The colour of a wine is deep red, bordering on black. Zinfandel is a spicy, peppery wine, with a hint of fruity flavor berries or dark cherries are often the taste range, whilst the intensity of these characteristics may vary.
