NEWS & NOTES November 2014 WELCOME BISHOP TOBY It was a real privilege to be in York Minster on 17th October for the consecration of Toby and Jonathan as the two new Bishops in the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. I do look forward to working with Bishop Toby in the Episcopal Area of Bradford. He brings significant wisdom and a real heart for Bradford. He will begin his ministry in earnest on 1st January 2015 and the Cathedral will not only support him in that but also look to play a significant and enthusiastic part in growing the church in this part of Yorkshire. The Dean The two bishops who complete the college of five bishops leading the new Diocese were ordained and consecrated on Friday 17th October at York Minster. At a service conducted by the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, Toby Howarth was consecrated as the Area Bishop of Bradford, and Jonathan Gibbs was consecrated as the Area Bishop of Huddersfield – the first ever Bishop of Huddersfield. They join the West Yorkshire and the Dales episcopal team led by Bishop Nick, Bishop of Leeds and diocesan bishop, and his episcopal colleagues, the Rt Revd James Bell, the Bishop for the Ripon Area and the Rt Revd Tony Robinson, Bishop for the Wakefield Area. The Address was given by Archbishop Justin based on the New Testament reading from Philippians Chapter 3 “… I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ my Lord…” “A bishop” he told the large congregation “is not a senior manager in a convenient administrative unit for putting together an administration, payroll, and deployment of staff to suitable outlets. A bishop is above all a shepherd, carrying their cross and, like middle-eastern shepherds, leading the sheep.” Bishop Toby will be officially welcomed at a special service in the Cathedral at 11am on Saturday 8th November. All welcome. Bishop Toby’s first service as our new Area Bishop will be at 10.15am on Sunday 23rd November - the Feast of Christ the King - when he will be presiding and preaching at a Confirmation Service. All welcome. CATHEDRAL VISION AND STRATEGY NEWS This month the Cathedral Chapter and the Council will be completing their approval of the following parts of our Vision: A new purpose statement Three new key values Some essential foundations Our ambitions for 2025 The meetings with both congregation and other interested parties continue until early November and they have proved not only encouraging but also most helpful in sharpening up our thinking. Before Christmas we shall be producing a small document that sums up all the above. The hard work of building up the detailed plan is the next stage. This will involve taking each of our ambitions and small teams will be charged with the delivery of this with Chapter overseeing the final document. I estimate that most of this will be complete by Easter. In the meantime the three values – namely Hospitality, Faithfulness and Wholeness seem to be proving memorable and I intend to produce a leaflet of the three sermons that I have preached on the purpose of Cathedral and the three Values. Please remember to pray. We have produced a prayer card that is available and we need the guidance and discernment of the Spirit in all that we do. CANON FOR MISSION AND PASTORAL DEVELOPMENT I am very pleased to announce that the Revd Mandy Coutts will be the newest recruit to the Cathedral team. We look forward to welcoming Mandy and her husband Richard and their daughters Jenni and Katharine to the Close. She will be formally placed in her stall at Evensong on Sunday 18th January at 4pm. Her post will be Canon for Mission and Pastoral Development recognising our need to grow as a Cathedral family but also to put in place the appropriate pastoral support and care for the congregation and parish. Mandy’s work will therefore be focused primarily on the congregation. It is an exciting time for the Cathedral as we shall be equipped with a full level of staffing. The Dean I have been happily married to Richard for 25 years. He is the Rector in Stanningley and Swinnow on the edge of Leeds. We have two grown up daughters, Jenni and Katharine, who are now both at University. Richard & I met at Bath University in 1987 while studying our Post Graduate Certificates in Education after gaining a BSc Honours in Applied Earth Sciences. I worked in two schools in South Bristol for several years and lived in Bath before working in industry overseeing software projects and managing product software development. After six years I went back into teaching working in a behaviour unit and then a special needs unit as Head of Music. Before ordination I was heavily involved in my local church. I then trained in Durham and moved to Leeds in 2006 to serve my curacy at St Matthew’s in Chapel Allerton. I moved to Bramley in October 2010. The churches in Bramley are all fairly traditional middle of the road Anglican but with a flair for drama, cafe services and trying new things; most recently a new monthly service called �Art and Theology’. It is also a parish with a heart for the community. I am also an associate tutor for York St John and teach Old Testament. Next year I will be teaching the liturgy module with Bishop Colin Buchanan. Other interests include Fairtrade, creative worship and writing, working with teenagers and families and exploring effective ways for clergy & laity to develop a healthy Work / Life Balance. I am a keen swimmer, love walking our two black Labradors, painting, singing and I have recently started learning the piano. We are really looking forward to moving into the Close and I am so excited about joining the Cathedral Staff and getting to know the congregation over the years ahead. Sunday 30th November An Artspace Event THE MADONNA AND CHILD BY ARAN ILLINGWORTH Aran’s work, exhibited in the Lady Chapel, focuses on the predicament of material poverty faced by women in different circumstances around the globe. The appliqué textile panels invite the viewer to enter the personal journey of each of the women while the resonance with the Virgin Mary and the Christ-Child during the Advent season adds a particularly poignancy. MUSIC THIS MONTH The most exciting piece of musical news this month is, for certain, the upgrading work to the organ console, fulfilling the first phase of the restoration work we planned when we first launched the Organ Appeal in February 2013. The result will be a reliable, up-to-date console to match any other Cathedral instrument in terms of flexibility and ease of use, making far easier choral accompanying and performance of the solo repertory, for resident and visitor player alike. Andrew Carter, our builder, is to be commended on his industry and real sense of engagement with the project at Bradford. The results will be plain to see, and it is so affirmative for our many donors and benefactors to see their donations translating into real, positive and concrete work! By the time we reach November, the Girls and Adults of the Choir will have returned from their tour to St Albans and London from what we are sure will be another successful trip, and a horizon-widening experience for all concerned. The Choir returns from its half term break on Sunday 2nd November and we plunge straight into an exceedingly busy run-up towards Christmas. The boys of the Choir have made such terrific progress in terms of confidence, blend and unanimity in recent months, and it will be a joy to see them singing with the adults at the Welcome Service for Bishop Toby Howarth on Saturday 8th November, with music by Vivaldi and Haydn. The previous evening sees the Cathedral Consort in concert with saxophonist David Wilson, presenting a programme based around themes of Remembrance: conflict, peace and reconciliation. The Consort presents a wide-ranging programme of suitably poignant anthems, accompanied by David's haunting improvisations. The month ends with the Advent Procession on 30th November, a magical candlelit service featuring the entire Choral Foundation in its constituent parts. This service takes place at 4.00pm and is one of the musical and liturgical highlights of the year. However, it is the day to day service singing on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays through which the Choir continues to build on its foundations and continue to make real progress. Outreach into schools continues through the Vocalise programme, but Musical Outreach of a different nature is celebrated on Saturday 22nd November with the annual Come and Sing Concert. This is the third year of such an initiative and this year sees a performance of Vivaldi's Gloria, supported by the Cathedral Consort, and likely to draw around 100 adult singers from across the region, as in previous years. Join us at 1.30pm if you would like to sing, or at 4.00pm to form a supportive concert audience. As in previous years, this event supports the ongoing Organ Appeal, as well as being an upliftingly affirmative afternoon of community music making in its own right. Jonathan Eyre's final Silent Movie in the triptych of Autumn 2014 takes place on Friday 28th November, this time showing 'The Wizard of Oz', and organ recitals continue in the ever-popular format of the Wednesday @ 1 series until the final Music Department 'Challenge Recital', which closes the series on Wednesday 3rd December. Meanwhile, in mid-November, nearly 800 children are visiting the Cathedral to learn about the Cathedral and witness a performance transcribed for organ of Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf', played by Jonathan and narrated by bass lay clerk - and former professional opera singer at international level - Donald Stephenson. This sort of wide-reaching outreach work is so very significant, and fosters not only a love of music among the district's young children, but also a real awareness of Bradford Cathedral itself and all that it has to offer culturally. It has been a joy to see a number of new probationers start to attend practices this term. Here's hoping that they find their feet and aspire to become full-time, permanent members of the Cathedral Choir. Meanwhile interesting initiatives and plans are developing with regard to strengthening our brilliant and loyal volunteer 'back row' and enhancing our provision of adult voices at choral services. So much seems to be going on at once within the Music Department, and my thanks are due to my many staff colleagues, our departmental supporters, as well as to all choir members and their families for all that they contribute to our Cathedral and its music. CLERGY HOUSE I am happy to be able to report that Chapter has completed its negotiations and is working in partnership with Bradford Council with regards to the future of Clergy House. A lease for 125 years has been signed which allows the building to be converted for the provision of services for temporarily homeless people along with office accommodation to administer the scheme. Work is scheduled to begin on site in December 2014 and is programmed to take twelve months. Disruption to the Cathedral will be minimal. It is an exciting project which affords us the opportunity to work in close partnership with the Council whilst ensuring the future of Clergy House which is currently a Health and Safety risk and a financial liability. POPPY INSTALLATION The poppy has become a particularly prominent and powerful symbol of remembrance during 2014 as we commemorate the centenary of the Great War. To show our respects and remembrance to all the fallen men and women of our Commonwealth, Bradford College are planning to create a textile poppy installation to be displayed in the college and we invite all our friends to join us. Little Germany Action has commissioned a piece of art work that can now be seen on Church Bank opposite the Cathedral steps out onto the road. That arch is about to go! HEARING AIDS In the workshop at Frankland Prison in Durham, the men are trained to refurbish old unwanted hearing aids to �as new’ condition. These are then given free of charge by a number of charities to needy children in the developing world. In 2013 such donations were made to 29 countries. If you have any suitable donations please pass them to the office and they will be sent via the Lions Club to Durham. All aids welcome broken / working / digital / analogue but please ensure they are boxed or in a suitable bag. Thank you. ABIGAIL PROJECT Many thanks to everyone who came to the mission lunch in early October to hear Emily Fullarton talk about the Abigail Project and how it houses destitute asylum seekers in Bradford. It was also good to meet some of the residents and chat to them. In her presentation Emily talked about the things we might do as a cathedral to support Abigail and its work. These included volunteering (tasks are many and varied and can be tailored to the volunteer!), funding and fund raising, donations of food and household items, loan of properties and becoming a board or subgroup member. In October's News from The Diocese of West Yorkshire & the Dales, Bishop Nick writes 'Pray. Act. Give.' In his article about areas of conflict such as Syria, Iraq and Nigeria he says "Please pray for those for whom change in their circumstances is shockingly painful and laden with loss. Please act by keeping their stories alive and doing what we can - especially if it comes to offering home and hospitality to traumatised asylum seekers. Please give to those organisations that are at the front line, bringing hope where we cannot reach." Abigail Housing is starting to receive referrals from asylum seekers from Iraq and Syria and is able to offer homes both to asylum seekers who have received leave to remain in houses in Leeds, and to those who have had their claims rejected in houses in Bradford. If you are able to make a donation to this work, please give it to Sue McWhinney or Maggie Peel. INTERFAITH WEEK 16th to 23rd November Interfaith Week takes place across the UK every year. The Cathedral will be supporting a number of events including an event to reflect on how we pass on faith to our children and an art event for children and families. IRAQ AND SYRIA Please continue to pray for the situation in the Middle East. In particular, please remember all those (of any nationality) currently held hostage by IS and other similar organisations, and everyone who has been displaced from their homes due to the IS advance. Please pray that Britain will be a welcoming place for refugees from all affected nations. Please also pray for guidance for all world leaders currently engaged in discussions about how the situation in Iraq and Syria can best be addressed. In a recent interview with ITV (available to view here http://www.itv.com/news/2014-10-16/archbishop-of-canterbury-isis-is-a-once-in-amillennium-threat/) the Archbishop of Canterbury said that "The way it's confronted in the end is by those Muslim and Christian and other faiths who confront it offering a better narrative of the purpose and future of life, a more valuable life, a more beautiful life than is offered by Isis, and which is not difficult." Pray for wisdom for people of all faiths as to how this narrative should be presented. Revd Cat Thatcher PILGRIM COURSE - THE FUTURE After a successful start, we are looking to continue running the Pilgrim course next year, using new material which has been designed to help people grow in faith. The style of the course is one of reflecting on scripture together, in an atmosphere where insights, questions, and experience can be shared. If you are interested in finding out more or joining a group next year, please talk to any of the clergy, or Sue McWhinney. NEW CAFÉ A �junk food’ cafe that only serves food which is past its sell by date or has been rejected by supermarkets and restaurants is to open next month in Saltaire. Those using the cafe will be asked to 'pay as you feel' - even if that means nothing at all. The Saltaire Canteen will open on 29th November in the former premises of Vicars Café and is a faith-based initiative that will work with other local organisations such as the Bradford North Foodbank to help those facing food poverty.
