COLLECT, POST COMMUNION PRAYER, READINGS AND MUSIC
COLLECT
Eternal Father, who at the baptism of
Jesus revealed him to be your Son,
anointing him with the Holy Spirit:
grant to us, who are born again by
water and the Spirit, that we may be
faithful to our calling as your adopted
children; through Jesus Christ your Son
our Lord, who is alive and reigns with
you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and for ever.
Amen.
FIRST READING
Acts 19.1-7
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul
passed through the inland regions and
came to Ephesus, where he found some
disciples. He said to them, Did you
receive the Holy Spirit when you
became believers?’ They replied, No,
we have not even heard that there is a
Holy Spirit.’ Then he said, Into what
then were you baptized?’ They
answered, Into John’s baptism.’ Paul
said, John baptized with the baptism of
repentance, telling the people to believe
in the one who was to come after him,
that is, in Jesus.’ On hearing this, they
were baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on
them, the Holy Spirit came upon them,
and they spoke in tongues and
prophesied – altogether there were
about twelve of them.
All
and he ate locusts and wild honey. He
proclaimed, The one who is more
powerful than I is coming after me; I
am not worthy to stoop down and untie
the thong of his sandals. I have
baptized you with water; but he will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’
In those days Jesus came from
Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized
by John in the Jordan. And just as he
was coming up out of the water, he saw
the heavens torn apart and the Spirit
descending like a dove on him. And a
voice came from heaven, You are my
Son, the Beloved; with you I am well
pleased.’
All
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
POST COMMUNION PRAYER
Lord of all time and eternity, you
opened the heavens and revealed yourself as Father in the baptism of Jesus
your beloved Son: by the power of your
Spirit complete the heavenly work of
our rebirth through the waters of the
new creation; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
Fresh Expressions’ Service
this evening at 6.00pm
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL READING
Mark 1.4-11
John the baptizer appeared in the
wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of
repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
And people from the whole Judean
countryside and all the people of
Jerusalem were going out to him, and
were baptized by him in the river
Jordan, confessing their sins. Now
John was clothed with camel’s hair,
with a leather belt around his waist,

SJC OUTREACH REVIEW
St John’s Cathedral is now conducting
a review on our cathedral outreach
effort which aims to strengthen our
current ministries and to set direction
for future programs. On Sunday, 25th
January, the Dean will hold an
Outreach Ministry Consultation
Meeting from 11.00am to 12.30pm at
the Li Hall. We invite all those who are
interested in the outreach effort of the
Cathedral to attend. Some of the
questions we will ponder in this
meeting are,
1. What do you find encouraging about
St John’s Cathedral outreach
ministries?
2. What concerns do you have?
3. How can we be proactive in addressing the current needs in Hong Kong
meanwhile honouring the good work
we have been doing all along?
4. How would you like to be involved
in the cathedral outreach?
Please join us for this time of
dialogue. We hope to see many of you
there! Please RSVP by e-mail to:
[email protected].

A SERVICE FOR THE OPENING
OF THE LEGAL YEAR 2015 AT
ST JOHN’S CATHEDRAL
Hong Kong's legal year is marked
as Ceremonial Opening of the
Legal Year with an address by the
Chief Justice of Hong Kong and
begins, this year, on Monday 12th
January. In his address at the
2014 event, the HKSAR Secretary
for Justice, Rimsky Yuen said:
“Ceremonial though it may appear, the
Opening of the Legal Year is part of a
long-established tradition adopted in
many common law jurisdictions. In
the context of Hong Kong, which is the
only common law jurisdiction in the
Greater China region, the Opening of
the Legal Year has unique significance
as it signifies the lively continuation of
the common law tradition in Hong
Kong under the One country, two
systems’ principle.”
From the early years of the 20th
Century, the event commenced with
a formal civic service at St John’s
Cathedral attended by the Governor
and the other senior personages of the,
then, Colonial Administration. The
official Service was discontinued after
1997 but, in 2006, Mr Justice Patrick
Chan, initiated and co-ordinated
discussion between the three elements
of the legal profession (Judiciary, Bar
Association and Law Society), the
Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong and
the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui
(Anglican Church of Hong Kong).
The privately sponsored and arranged
service has been held annually from
that time — alternately celebrated in
Garden Road, Central, at St John’s
Cathedral and St Joseph’s Church,
with His Eminence the Cardinal
and His grace, the Archbishop,
co-officiating at one and
co-celebrating at the other.
The Revd John Chynchen

RADIO MINISTRY
Some of the cathedral chaplains take
part in broadcasting talks and
reflections on RTHK as part of our
outreach and service to the wider
community. You can hear Revd Will

Matter’ at 9.50am every Tuesday
morning in January, on RTHK 4

thoughts on the Wise Men, reflections
from a recent trip to Myanmar
(Burma), and a brief exploration of
where we can find God.
In addition to our radio ministry,
RTHK broadcasts our Sunday services
and Christmas Midnight Mass, along
with services from the daughter
churches regularly during the year.

EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY
(EfM) ENGLISH-SPEAKING
GROUP ENROLMENT FOR 2015
What is EfM?
EFM is for those who want to discover
more about Christianity and their
ministry as baptised Christians. It is a
comprehensive educational programme
involving an intensive study of
Christianity.
Participants learn from their own
experience, from other Christians and
from the traditions of Christianity
found in Scripture and in the history of
the Church. Each week there are
assigned readings and the group meets
at the Cathedral to discuss what they
have read. Groups are led by accredited
Mentors. No specific qualifications are
needed to join a group, beyond an
ability to read English discerningly and
make the necessary time commitment
for the meetings and the weekly
readings.
The English-speaking Education for
Ministry (EfM) group, meets at
7.00pm on Monday evenings, and is
now recruiting new members for the
2015 year which starts on 9th February.
An enrolment form can be obtained at

HK$2,500 payable to "St John's
Cathedral" by hand or mail addressed
