The Water’s Edge
February 2015
The Battle of the Sacred and the Secular
8
Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is
pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if
there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
The front cover of this month’s Water’s Edge is a wonderfully busy display of
artwork. “The Fight between Carnival and Lent” by Pieter Brueghel the Elder
depicts a common festival held in the Southern Netherlands. On the left side of the
painting there is an inn, and in the right side of the painting there is a church. The
juxtaposition is meant to illustrate the two sides of human nature: pleasure and religious
chastity, and the contrast between the two. Near the church sit well-behaved children.
Near the inn are rambunctious drunkards. The fat man in the middle of the painting, with
the pie on his head, is a representation of “carnival.” The painting represents a common
theme in 16th century Europe, the battle between Carnival and Lent, and with its humor
and witticism, is a satirical critique on the conflicts of the Reformation.
Shrove Tuesday invites one last blast of indulgent, even hedonistic behavior before putting on the 40-day long and sullen
serious faces with legalistic robes of sacrifice and restraint for Lent beginning with Ash Wednesday. Of course this was
and may still be for some the practice of the “churched”, but for the “unchurched” the “anti-Churched”… for the majority
of our culture one day is as good as any other of 365 for “living however they {we} please.” The “bad” and the “good”,
the ultra-libertarian unclean and the super-pious righteous too goody goodies and everyone in between… regardless of the
“outside appearance,” all would benefit from a Kingdom-shaping-life word of God to transform us. So let us consider
Philippians 4:8 as quoted above…
Perhaps you recognize this Word from last month’s Pastor’s Article? Yes, it is back for a repeat performance. Last month
— January — had me inviting all to join in a New Year’s one-day-at-a-time resolution to allow this Word to shape our
days… in the hope’s that it would assist with more successful transforming of life with any resolution. This month —
February —as we prepare for Lent, I anticipate that some, even many, will be “giving something up” for Lent. A worthy
endeavor and effort, but perhaps we might consider adding a discipline instead. Add this verse to your 3 squares meal
prayers for the day and let’s see what God can do with and for us.
It’s just that… well… I’m thinking God isn’t asking us to “give up” joy, fun, excitement, simple pleasures {healthy}, or any
other nonlife-threatening blessings. I’m thinking {I’d like to think, “inspired thinking”} that our Lord would more delight in
a lavish, extravagant, indulging feasting on the Word… any Word… but perhaps this delectably enticing Word from
Philippians.
The well behaved child in the shadow of the Church may well be secretively scheming how to get some of that pie without
getting caught… and the jousters may both be secretly recognizing what fools they may be making of themselves and
would gladly slip away to Confession… For me, I must confess my New Year’s Resolution has had a wonderfully positive
impact on my behavior. So, I’m going to one-day-at-a-time it for 40 more days of Lent. I figure this “addition” of
discipline will benefit those around me more than giving up chocolate.

M.M.M. Good!
Mission Partnership Team
Introducing…Member Care Meal Ministry…it’s M.M.M. Good!
Are you interested in supporting fellow MLC members through
meal ministry?
If you have read the annual report, you will have noticed this
congregation's gifts to those in need in our community.
Besides financial gifts, food, coats, socks and Christmas gifts
in abundance were donated as well as numerous service
projects.
The Member Care team is seeking caring souls who are willing
to provide an occasional meal as needed for members who are
recovering from surgery, illness, have experienced loss,
financial hardship or are going through other unexpected life
situations.
We are working towards developing a regular rotation of meal
provision to those who would be uplifted by this support. We
would love to have you join us as we minister to our church
family. Meals need not be gourmet!
Please contact Heidi Peterson to be added to our list of
providers or for more information.
A Note of Thanks...

The "Food of the Month" for February isn't food at all.
Food stamps don't cover some personal care items so our
focus this month will be tooth brushes and paste, shampoo,
bar soap, toilet tissue and paper towels. Also, please
remember paper grocery bags and empty water bottles with
their lids.
Thank you for helping us be the hands and feet of Christ!

Empty Bowls
Member Care Team to Send Valentines
MLC has a number of members
who are unable to come to worship.
Surely these folks miss seeing their
church friends.
As we did last year, we will be
sending a congregational Valentine
card to these friends.
The cards will be available for you to sign on Sunday, February
2 and Sunday, February 8.
You are invited to the 17th Annual Fundraiser for ICA Food
Shelf & Resource West on Tuesday, March 24 from 11:00 am
to 7:00 pm at the Hopkins Center for the Arts, 1111
Mainstreet, Hopkins.
Choose your favorite handmade bowl from over 1,000 FREE
bowls created by artists and students. Keep it as a reminder
of all the “empty bowls” in our community.
Enjoy local entertainment and a simple meal of soup and
bread donated by local restaurants.
And much more. See HopkinsSchools.org/Empty Bowls for

Seeking Seasoned Seniors
Your ideas and enthusiasm are NEEDED!
The Member Care Team is planning to host a series of
quarterly presentations that especially appeal to (but are not
necessarily limited to) senior citizens in our community. We
are collaborating with Brookdale Community, a major senior
care organization, who will be presenting for us. Our goal is to
provide meaningful and informative sessions that meet the
needs of our neighbors.
On a cold and snowy night in
1910, Ursula Todd is born, the
third child of a wealthy English
banker and his wife. Sadly, she
dies before she can draw her first
breath. On that same cold and
snowy night, Ursula Todd is born,
lets out a lusty wail, and embarks
upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as
she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in any number of
ways. Clearly history (and Kate Atkinson) have plans for
her: In Ursula rests nothing less than the fate of
civilization.
Karen Antonovich and Jean Schlemmer are hosting. We will
meet at Karen’s home on February 16 at 7:00 pm. All are
welcome… even men!
We need YOUR help brainstorming to decide what topics to
choose and how to reach out to our community. We would
like to form a team of members to bring this program to life.
Contact Heidi Peterson if you are interested in this outreach
ministry.
Your energy is appreciated!

Children, Youth and Family Ministries
Rachel Coen-Tuff—Intern Director CYF
February is here and we as a children, youth, and family team have been very busy! The Sunday
School children have chosen this month to be our memory month. Jenn Vorland was kind enough
to come in and teach the children the Lord’s Prayer using their colors and stones. The children
have also been hard at work preparing two new songs to sing in church this month. After several
months of Christmas tunes we were ready to learn something new! The Sunday school children
were also blessed last month to receive a large sum of money from the congregation to go towards
our Good Gifts. Each class was asked what they would like to purchase and what they think people
would need. Then our older students took the lead on making final purchase decisions and
determining what would be our final selections. We are so thankful to all those who gave toward
this excellent organization so that the children were able to experience the opportunity to give to
those who are in need.
The high school students were able to experience a winter retreat focused around service. We got
to spend time learning about service and how we can be a servant to others. A service type project that we were able to
participate in was in the making of blessing bags. These bags are going to be donated to a homeless shelter which can then
be used for personal care. We also had some fun with the amazing weather. We all went snow tubing at a local park. These
retreats are meant as a time to refresh and to dig deep in our connection with one another and with God.
We also participated in the Feed My Starving Children food packing event. The youth were able to learn about how many
people are fed around the world from this great organization located right here in the Twin Cities!
Blessings,
Rachel Coen-Tuff

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, 4who consoles us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to
console those who are in any affliction with the consolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God. —2 Corinthians 1:2-4
Healing Prayer takes place monthly at MLC, capturing the power of God to console, refresh, and make new. Come and claim
the blessings and power of prayer and the advantages of caring prayer warriors willing to walk together sharing burdens and
celebrating joys.
Experiencing a time of affliction… searching for hope in time of struggle… needing encouragement in time of feeling alone?
Illness or anxiety leading to dis-ease? Look no further… God is still, as always, healing. Find here a source of compassion and
promise of healing? For you or someone you care for… prayer in the power of the Spirit and the presence of a sensitive and
faithful prayer team could be the blessing needed.
Let your need, curiosity, inkling and the urging of the Holy Spirit or whatever it takes… inspire you to come and capture the
hope and blessings of gathering and praying in the power of Jesus’ Name…

Wednesday Night Family Dinners
2015 VBS Planning Meeting
Our Wednesday Night supper
program is in full swing.
Tuesday, February 3rd
February 2015
Camp Vertical VBS is on the calendar for June 15-19! Our first
planning meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 3
at 6:30 pm in the conference room. We invite you to come &
share your ideas for this year’s programming!
Delicious, affordable meals will be
ready for your dining pleasure at
6:00pm on Wednesday evenings,
with a suggested donation of $3 per
person, or $10 per family.
Sunday School Singing on February 8
Confirmation students along with
their families are asked to serve the
meals, and clean up. NEW this year,
a ministry team will also serve and
clean up one meal per month.
On Sunday, February 8, the students will sing under the
direction of Rachel Coen-Tuff and accompanied by Diane
Tuseth. We invite Sunday School families to worship together
at the 9:00 am or the 10:45 am service. Your children can sit
with you and then join the others at the times listed below.
This year’s offerings will be a rotation of 4 menus, to include:
Lasagna, Grown Up Mac & Cheese, Tacos and Chicken Wild Rice
Soup.
The students should gather downstairs no later than 9:25 am,
so they can process in together near the end of the first
service.
Regular Sunday School classes will be held, and the students
will gather at the end of classes to sing at the beginning of the
10:45 service. They should be finished around 11:00 am and
can either join you for worship or leave with you.
The supper program will run concurrently with the confirmation
program.
Who should come to Wednesday Night Family Dinner?
YOU! All are welcome and invited to come. Give it a try—you
might decide to make it a weekly tradition!
Thank you for your support of our Sunday School children!
We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, February 8!

Sunday School Students Choose Good Gifts
MLC Sunday School students had lots of fun on January 18, thinking of ways to help others and spending their allotment of our
Good Gifts mission giving program.
We had $1,977 to spend, including $1,800 from congregational offerings and $177 given without designation at the lunch
following our Christmas program.
We found lots of great gifts in the new Good Gifts catalog, and had interesting discussions about how these gifts can help our
brothers and sisters around the world.
Highlights of the Sunday School choices –
Family farm that includes 1 cow, 2
goats, 12 chicks, 2 pigs, farming tools,
agricultural training and marketing
support.
Grain bank that will supply extra
wheat, rice, corn and other staples as a
way to prevent hunger following a
drought or natural disaster.
Village health team organizing to
help pastors, lay church leaders,
doctors and community health care
volunteers provide immediate medical
care for malaria treatment, diagnosis
and prevention.
Bicycle ambulance – this can be the
fastest form of transportation to and
from the hospital in remote villages. In
some places bicycle taxis specially
designed to carry passengers, can
shave hours (or even days!) off a long
journey and be the difference between
life and death for someone who is
seriously sick or injured.
Share of a Community Garden land, special drought-resistant seeds,
tools and training for all, to provide
plenty of carrots, cabbage, beans,
cassava, melons and other fruits and
vegetables to go around! Extra produce
and seeds are shared with neighbors in
need.
School Fees and Uniform for a Girl
- More than half of the world’s out-ofschool children are girls. This will
provide fees and a uniform one of
these girls.
Irrigation canal – 150 feet, to the
largest fields of a village, along with
training and maintenance, to help
ensure that there is always enough to
food to cultivate.
And More – water purification tablets, mosquito netting for malaria control, honey bees, a sheep, a goat and chicks!
This was fun! Watch for your turn to choose more Good Gifts, when your ministry team is called!

January Council Meeting Highlights
Devotion: Rae Vanek shared a devotion focusing on a passage from the book Jesus Calling. Jesus is always at our side, and
remembering this allows us to laugh at concerns for the future. The account at Matthew 14 of Peter walking on the water until
doubt sets in, reminds of the importance of faith. This is true in quiet and in chaotic times – when we open ourselves to the
Lord, He provides.
2015 Budget: Financial Secretary John Winberg presented his final proposed budget for 2015. Amounts pledged are in line
with prior years. We will present this budget to the congregation for approval on January 25, 2015.
Reports: Highlights from Pastor Bob’s report — Visioning - Hospitality Space team is taking a breather but we will plan to
discuss possible ideas at the annual meeting. Church, Youth & Family - Pastor Bob and Rachel will accompany our youth on
their planned trip to Detroit in July. Servanthood - we may see partnerships among congregations within our conference for
specific aspects of refugee resettlement. Fellowship – Thank you Beth Flynn for your service, as we look for a new team leader.
Stewardship – It’s heartening to see pledges growing despite declines in our budget. Properties – Thank you Gregg Happe for
your leadership, as we look for a new Team leader.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Jo Koenig reported that as of December 31 our total income for the year to date was
$382,041.80, above budget of $370,000.00 for the same period. Expenses for the year to date were $375,397.36, in excess of
budget of $370,000.00 for the same period.
Liaison Reports: Jean Schlemmer reported Mission Partnership team is contemplating another blood drive next summer. ZOOM
House gala is scheduled for March 28. Sue Hlavac reported that Properties is working on another proposal for a new monument
sign.
The challenge of office administration while Sue Lungstrom undergoes chemotherapy and surgery is being met so far with
generous help from Susan Bronken, Anne Deuring and several other volunteers. Sue is also working as much as possible. We
will try to continue on this basis for the time being.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, February 19, 2015.
