Dear IS Modena families,
We hope you had a wonderful half-term break and are ready for this exciting and busy second
half term. It was lovely to see the students this morning walk in the door with smiles on their
faces eager to be back in school!
Today we also welcome one new student in our Transition class, Olivia from Brazil.
Don’t miss out on the updates regarding the IB Diploma and building extension plus this week’s
PYP Newsletter highlighting the trips and DENMARK DAY taking place tomorrow, with special
visitors from the Langkaer IB World school in Denmark.
MYP students
The MYP students are currently learning about our school’s Academic Honesty Policy. Academic
honesty is a fundamental value for the IB. Grade 7 will have a workshop on Wednesday 5th
November. To enable the students to develop the referencing skills they will need for the
Diploma the MYP students will be using an age appropriate version of MLA, an internationally
recognised referencing system. Also as part of the Academic Honesty Policy they will learn the
importance of ensuring that work they hand in for assessment is their own work. Any original
ideas, words or images which are not their own work should be clearly acknowledged. We hope
that parents will support their children in developing their understanding of what it means to be
academically honest, for example by ensuring students do not 'copy and paste' from the
internet.
IS Modena vs IS Monza vs IS Bologna – Sports fixture (Handball) – November 6/7
IS Modena sports teams from Grade 5 to Grade 9 will be involved in Handball matches against IS
Monza and IS Bologna this Thursday & Friday.
A huge thank you to all the IS Modena families who once again have opened their homes and
eagerly joined in this fantastic student exchange by hosting the IS Monza students.
Halloween Parties
Thank you Student Council, PTA, volunteer moms and staff for actively contributing in making
our Halloween Party 2014 a fun afternoon and evening for all our students, PYP and MYP.

We would also like to remind you that the PTA meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday,
November 4 at 13:00 will focus on the organization of the Winter Fair which will take place on
Saturday, November 29.

IB DIPLOMA
UPDATES & NEWS
IB DIPLOMA UPDATE
Over the half-term break, we formally submitted our IB Diploma 'application for authorisation' to the
IB's regional office. Teachers have been busy since September developing 'course outlines' for the
subjects to be offered by IS Modena and several have already attended official IB Diploma Workshops
for the courses that they will be teaching come September 2015.
Furthermore, we have also updated our policies on academic honesty, inclusion, assessment,
language and admissions in order to integrate the requirements of the IB Diploma Programme.
Teachers will be implementing the changes during the course of the remainder of this academic year
(students have also had workshops in their humanities lessons on the new academic honesty policy)
and they are also available for download from the school website for you to read.
Major areas for investment with a view to DP implementation will be in the library and science labs,
in addition to our building extension which we expect to begin later this month. Our next major
deadline is 'verification visit' to take place in March 2015.

INFORMATION
Bus Service
Bus routes are determined by the bus company who try to provide the most efficient route
possible. Please be aware that your child can be on the bus for up to 1 hour each trip.
As part of improving overall safety and efficiency a number of rules for the bus have been
developed:
 Students should be ready for the bus a couple of minutes before their assigned pick-up time.
 Ensure shoes are clean.
 Parents are responsible for ensuring their child is on the bus in the morning.
 Parents must advise the bus company if their child is not taking the bus.
 The school is responsible for ensuring students get on the bus at the end of the school day.
Please note that buses may leave from school any time from 15:10 to 15:20 in the afternoon.
 The school requires a note or email from parents before 14:00 if they are intending to
collect their child from school and transport is not required. Without notification students
will be put on the bus.
 Students are not allowed to change bus routes for any reason.
 If there is an emergency, then the School Manager should be contacted and alternative
arrangements will be made.
 Changes in the bus schedules may take place to accommodate new students. We hope you
appreciate the bus company try their best to keep these to a minimum.
 Students must remain seated with their seatbelts fastened at all times while on the bus.
Respectful behaviour on the buses is expected from all students.
 Should a child repeatedly misbehave on the bus, then the bus company and the school might
agree to have the bus service suspended for that child for a couple of days.
Celebrating student birthdays in school
We welcome the celebration of birthdays in our school however, there are a few guidelines that
need to be observed:
a) We will admit into school grounds only “nut free” birthday cakes or pastries and they will have
to be purchased goods and not homemade.
b) You will have to inform the school office at least 3 days prior to the date you wish to bring
the cake to school. Written communication via mail is preferable.
c) To avoid disruption in class, students will be allowed to bring cakes and pastries onto school
grounds ONLY on birthday occasions.
Please refrain from giving your child/children any cakes/tarts/pies and pastries to be shared with
classmates.
The well being of our students is our upmost priority and due to the presence of various
allergies in our community, students are not allowed to share food.

HEALTH & SAFETY
Security
The safety and security of your children is extremely important to us.
All parents and visitors must sign in at the office when entering the school
building and sign out when leaving.
We ask all parents to use the outer parking lot and enter through the small
gate. Please help us in ensuring that the small gate is closed at all times. The
school has an evacuation procedure which will be used in the case of either
fire or other security alert. Regular fire and earthquake drills take place
throughout the school year.
OUR SCHOOL IMPLEMENTS A STRICT NUT-FREE POLICY
No food containing any type of nuts or nut traces is allowed in the school
building at any time.
Please note: Nutella does contain nuts.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping everyone in our school healthy and
safe.
Snacks/Drinks: Please note that students may bring healthy snacks or fruit to
enjoy during their breaks.
Sweets, crisps and high sugar drinks (Coke, Sprite, Ice-Tea) are not
allowed.
No gum is permitted anywhere in the building or on the school grounds.
Early Years students bring only fruit.

Gentili Famiglie IS Modena,
Ci auguriamo abbiate trascorso una bellissima vacanza di metà trimestre e siate pronti ad affrontare
queste prossime intense settimane! Riempie di orgoglio ed è sempre con grande soddisfazione che
accogliamo i ns. studenti dopo una settimana di vacanza che rientrano con il sorriso sulle labbra e
felici di essere di nuovo a scuola!
Oggi diamo il benvenuto ad una nuova giovane studentessa nella classe di Transition, Olivia dal
Brasile.
Non perdetevi l’aggiornamento in merito al Dilpoma IB e la costruzione dell’ala dedicata oltre alla
Newsletter PYP in cui vengono illustrate le gite e la GIORNATA DELLA DANIMARCA che si terrà
domani con visitatori speciali direttamente dalla scuola danese IB Langkaer.
Studenti MYP
Gli studenti delle Middle Years hanno iniziato a conoscere la policy scolastica sull’onestà
accademica. L’onestà accademica è uno dei valori fondamentali nei programmi IB. Grades 7
parteciperà ad un workshop su questo tema mercoledì 5 novembre. Per accompagnare gli studenti
nello sviluppo delle competenze che dovranno avere per referenziare correttamente per il Diploma,
gli studenti delle Middle Years utilizzeranno una versione per le Medie del MLA, un sistema per
referenziare riconosciuto a livello internazionale.
Sempre come parte dell’onestà accademica apprenderanno l’importanza di consegnare valutazioni e
lavori svolti esclusivamente da loro. Ogni idea originale, parola ed immagine che non siano frutto del
proprio ingenio, dovrà essere referenziata. Auspichiamo un supporto fattivo dei genitori nel far
comprendere l’importanza di essere accademicamente onesti, come ad esempio evitare di copiare
ed incollare da internet.
IS Modena vs IS Monza vs IS Bologna – Incontri sportivi (Pallamano) – 6/7 novembre
Le squadre sportive di IS Modena formate da studenti di Grade 5 a Grade 9 sfideranno le squadre di
IS Monza e IS Bologna questo giovedì e venerdì.
Un grandissimo ringraziamento a tutte le famiglie IS Modena che ancora una volta hanno abbracciato
con entusiasmo questa fantastica iniziativa di scambio ospitando gli studenti di IS Monza.
Feste di Halloween
Ringraziamo il Consiglio Studentesco, il PTA, le mamme volontarie e lo staff per aver contribuito
attivamente alla realizzazione del Party di Halloween 2014, un pomeriggio e serata all’insegna del
divertimento per tutti i nostri studenti, PYP e MYP.

Vorremmo inoltre ricordarvi che l’incontro del PTA previsto per domani, 4 novembre alle 13:00, sarà
dedicato all’organizzazione della Festa d’Inverno che si terrà sabato 29 novembre.

IB DIPLOMA
UPDATES & NEWS
AGGIORNAMENTI IB DIPLOMA
Nel corso della pausa di metà trimestre, abbiamo formalmente inviato la ‘domanda di
autorizzazione’ all’ufficio regionale IB. Gli insegnanti sono stati impegnati da Settembre nello
sviluppo delle ‘bozze dei programmi’ per le materie che verranno offerte da IS Modena e molti di
loro hanno già partecipato ai workshop ufficiali IB Diploma per le materie che insegneranno a partire
da Settembre 2015.
Inoltre, abbiamo aggiornate le nostre policy sull’onestà accademica, sull’inclusione, sulla
valutazione, sulla lingua e sulle ammissioni per integrare le richieste dell’IB Diploma Programme. Gli
insegnanti implementeranno i cambiamenti nel corso del resto dell’anno scolastico (gli studenti
hanno partecipato ai workshop sulla nuova policy sull’onestà accedemica nel corso delle loro lezioni
di Discipline Umanistiche) e le policy saranno disponibili per il download dal sito web della scuola.
Le aree di maggiore investimento in termini di implementazione del DP saranno la biblioteca e il
laboratorio di scienze, in aggiunta alla nuova ala i cui lavori dovrebbero iniziare entro questo mese.
La nostra prossima scadenza è la ‘visita di verifica’ che si terrà a Marzo 2015.

Servizio bus
I giri delle navette sono definiti dalla ditta del trasporto bus che cerca di fornire il percorso più
efficiente possibile. Siate consapevoli che Vostro figlio può dover restare sul bus fino ad un’ora per
ogni viaggio.
Nel tentativo di migliorare la sicurezza e l’efficienza, sono state sviluppate alcune regole per l’uso
del bus:
 Gli studenti devono essere pronti per il bus un paio di minuti prima dell’orario di raccolta a loro
assegnato.
 Assicurarsi che le scarpe siano pulite.
 I genitori hanno la responsabilità di garantire che i figli prendano il pulmino al mattino.
 I Genitori devono informare la ditta del bus se il loro figlio non prenderà il bus.
 La scuola ha la responsabilità di assicurarsi che gli studenti salgano sul pulmino alla fine della
giornata scolastica. I pulmini possono partire dalla scuola in qualsiasi momento tra le 15:10 e le
15:20.
 La scuola richiede un messaggio o una mail da parte dei genitori entro le 14:00 se intendono
venire a prendere i bambini a scuola e se non richiedono il servizio. Salvo diversa
comunicazione, i bambini saranno messi sul pulmino.
 Agli studenti non è permesso cambiare pulmino per alcun motivo. In caso di emergenza, allora
deve essere contattata la School Manager e saranno apportate modifiche.
 Cambiamenti nell’orario del bus possono essere fatti per accogliere nuovi studenti. Speriamo
apprezziate lo sforzo della ditta del bus nel contenere i cambiamenti.
 Gli studenti devono restare seduti con le cinture allacciate per tutto il tempo che sono sul bus.
Gli studenti devono avere un comportamento educato sul bus.
 Se uno studente dovesse ripetutamente comportarsi male sul bus, la ditta del trasporto e la
scuola potrebbero concordare di sospendere il servizio bus per quel bambino per un paio di
giorni.
Celebrare il compleanno degli studenti a scuola
I festeggiamenti dei compleanni sono benaccetti nella nostra scuola, tuttavia ci sono alcune linee
guida da seguire:
a) Possiamo accettare a scuola solo torte o dolci “senza frutta a guscio” e devono essere
acquistati e non fatti in casa.
b) Dovrete informare la segreteria almeno 3 giorni prima della data in cui intendete portare la
torta a scuola. Una comunicazione scritta è preferibile.
c) Per evitare interruzioni nelle lezioni, agli studenti è permesso portare a scuola torte e dolci
SOLO in occasione di compleanni.
Vi invitiamo ad evitare di dare a vostro figlio torte/crostate/dolci da condividere con i compagni di
classe.
Il benessere dei nostri studenti è la nostra priorità assoluta e vista la presenza di varie allergie
nella nostra comunità, agli studenti non è permesso condividere cibo.

Salute & Sicurezza
Sicurezza
La sicurezza e l’incolumità dei nostri bambini è estremamente importante.
Tutti i genitori e i visitatori devono registrarsi in segreteria quando entrano
a scuola e devono segnare l’uscita quando escono. Chiediamo a tutti i
genitori di usare il parcheggio esterno e di entrare dal cancellino. Vi
chiediamo di assicurarvi che il cancellino sia sempre chiuso. La scuola ha una
propria procedura di evacuazione in caso di incendio o di altro allarme di
sicurezza. Prove di evacuazione anti-incendio o anti-sismiche vengono
condotte regolarmente nel corso dell’anno scolastico.
NELLA NOSTRA SCUOLA E’ IN VIGORE UN RIGOROSO DIVIETO DI CONSUMO
DI FRUTTA A GUSCIO
Nessun alimento contenente frutta a guscio o tracce di frutta a guscio è
ammesso nell’edificio scolastico in qualsiasi momento.
NB: la Nutella contiene frutta a guscio.
Ringraziamo per la cooperazione nel mantenere un ambiente sano e sicuro
per tutti.
Merende/bevande: si prega di notare che gli studenti possono portare
merende sane o frutta da gustare durante le ricreazioni.
Caramelle, patatine e bevande gassate (Cola, Sprite e The Freddo) non
sono consentiti.
Non è permesso consumare gomme da masticare all’interno e all’esterno
della scuola.
Gli studenti delle Materne portano solo frutta.

REMINDERS
School activity starts at 8:30!
We kindly remind you that school days start at 8:30 sharp. Which means the school activity will
begin exactly at 8:30 and any late comers will be disrupting class. Please try to make an effort and
come in before 8:30 am, children can be dropped off from 8:10 onwards.
L’attività accademica inizia alle 8:30!
Vi ricordiamo che le lezioni iniziano alle 8.30 in punto. Ciò significa che le attività didattiche della
giornata iniziano proprio alle 8:30 e qualsiasi ritardatario si ritroverà ad interrompere
inevitabilmente il lavoro della classe. Vi invitiamo a cercare di arrivare prima delle 8.30, vi
ricordiamo che gli studenti possono arrivare dalle 8:10 in avanti.
SCHOOL UNIFORM
Students are expected to wear the school uniform which consists of a blue polo shirt and a blue
sweatshirt. Students can wear the short sleeved polo shirt and winter jacket on top for outdoor
activities. Please make sure your children refrain from wearing personal sweatshirts, cardigans or
jumpers. Please refer to the Student-Parent Handbook for further information.
DIVISA DELLA SCUOLA
Gli studenti devono indossare la divisa della scuola composta da una polo a manica lunga e/o corta
e felpa blue. Gli studenti possono indossare la polo a maniche corte sotto al giaccone per le
attività esterne. Vi preghiamo di assicurarvi che i vs. figli non vengano a scuola con felpe, cardigan
e/o maglioni personali. Vi invitiamo a consultare lo Student-Parent Handbook per ulteriori
informazioni.
PARKING AREA
All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times.
Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don’t leave any personal belongings in
the car.
Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service.
PARCHEGGIO ESTERNO
Tutti i genitori devono utilizzare sempre il parcheggio all’esterno del cancello. Ricordatevi di
chiudere le portiere dell’auto e non lasciate borse e borsette in macchina. Il parcheggio interno è
riservato allo staff e ai bus scolastici.
