Dear IS Modena families,
PTA - Welcome Back lunch
While observing the diversity of cultures our community represents and watching our
families, staff and students come together and enjoying a wonderful and relaxed meal
together and challenging their language skills I was pleased in finding myself thinking how
our community is made of lifelong learners and internationally minded people.
A special thank you to Mrs. Salters and Mrs. Christensson for having once more exceeded all
expectations and organised another fantastic Welcome Lunch.
PYP Workshop for parents
Ms. Jacky Payne, our Primary Years Coordinator, will be holding a parents workshop to
introduce the IB Primary Years Programme together with Ms. Chiara Forti for Italian
translation. The workshop is aimed for helping parents new to our programmes grasp a
better understanding of how they work. All Primary parents are invited to attend on
Tuesday, September 23 from 8:45 to 10:00 in the Auditorium. Please confirm your
attendance by 2 pm today.
Wesley College Orchestra from Melbourne Australia visiting IS Modena
Exciting event coming up as we prepare to host the Wesley Orchestra from Melbourne,
Australia on September 24th. A musical band, Wesley College Orchestra, consisting of 13
students and 3 teachers travelling all the way from Australia will be visiting our school, to
perform a wide and varied repertoire ranging from rock and roll and film music to folk song
style. The ensemble is a mix of violins, trumpets, drums, guitar, bass guitar and keyboard.
The concert for our students will be held in the Auditorium from 9:45 am.
Thank you to all the Middle Years families who have eagerly joined in this unique experience
by hosting the Australian students.
Meet-up for hosting families on Tuesday 23rd at 6 pm at school.
After school activities start today
We are still waiting on a few confirmations for some of the after school activities. Here
following you will find the preview of the clubs we are confident will be confirmed. Please
make sure you mail the office confirmation regarding your child(ren)’s club by today.
Starting a new experience - workshop on relocation: experiencing change and new
challenges“ with dr.ssa Fungi from 13:30 to 14:45 in the Auditorium, please confirm
participation by Friday 26.
After receiving fantastic feedback from our sisters schools in Monza and Milan – this year
Modena will be offering this important workshop for all our new parents.

Women’s Volleyball World Championship Italy 2014
Modena will be hosting some of the volleyball matches and together with one of our
parents, Mr. Bertoli – former star of Italian national team, we will be organising to see one
or two matches on Wednesday, October 1st.
The volleyball matches will take place at PalaPanini in Modena at 5 and 8 pm. Tickets are
20 Euro for parterre or 14 Euro for bleachers. Children under 6 have a reduced entrance
ticket. The tickets are for the day and they allow entrance to both matches. Dinner,
between the matches, can be booked in the food court just outside the PalaPanini in the
Volleyball Village and the price is around 20 Euro p.p.
We will mail our parents a dedicated letter including the sign-up form so that we can start
having an idea of how many students and parents are interested in participating. Mr. Bertoli
has kindly offered to take care of the ticket purchase and booking the restaurant once we
have the final numbers of students and parents attending.
October 1st isn’t that far away so we will need to ask families to give a prompt reply upon
receiving the information.

Italian beginners class with Ms. Zini – Mondays from 13:45 to 14:45
We are planning on holding our Italian beginners class for parents. If you are interested and
want to find out more, please join our trial lesson on October 6 from 13:45 to 14:45.
Participation needs to be confirmed by Wednesday, October 1 st. (minimum 4 participants)
We are also planning on offering English classes for parents (beginners and intermediate)
with Mr. Kay. Please contact the office if you are interested in learning English (minimum 4
participants).
Winter Spettacolo 2014 - Auditions this week: Tuesday lunch time – Friday lunch time
This year our Winter Spettacolo will take place in the Palasportiva Formiginese on Friday,

Today we also welcome two new students in our Primary classes: Darjus in Grade 2 and
Titas in Grade 4. A warm welcome to our new family who has just recently relocated to
Italy.

INFORMATION
Bus Service
Bus routes are determined by the bus company who try to provide the most efficient route
possible. Please be aware that your child can be on the bus for up to 1 hour each trip.
As part of improving overall safety and efficiency a number of rules for the bus have been
developed:
 Students should be ready for the bus a couple of minutes before their assigned pick-up time.
 Ensure shoes are clean.
 Parents are responsible for ensuring their child is on the bus in the morning.
 Parents must advise the bus company if their child is not taking the bus.
 The school is responsible for ensuring students get on the bus at the end of the school day.
Please note that buses may leave from school any time from 15:10 to 15:20 in the afternoon.
 The school requires a note or email from parents before 14:00 if they are intending to
collect their child from school and transport is not required. Without notification students
will be put on the bus.
 Students are not allowed to change bus routes for any reason.
 If there is an emergency, then the School Manager should be contacted and alternative
arrangements will be made.
 Changes in the bus schedules may take place to accommodate new students. We hope you
appreciate the bus company try their best to keep these to a minimum.
 Students must remain seated with their seatbelts fastened at all times while on the bus.
Respectful behaviour on the buses is expected from all students.
 Should a child repeatedly misbehave on the bus, then the bus company and the school might
agree to have the bus service suspended for that child for a couple of days.
Celebrating student birthdays in school
We welcome the celebration of birthdays in our school however, there are a few guidelines that
need to be observed:
a) We will admit into school grounds only “nut free” birthday cakes or pastries and they will have
to be purchased goods and not homemade.
b) You will have to inform the school office at least 3 days prior to the date you wish to bring
the cake to school. Written communication via mail is preferable.
c) To avoid disruption in class, students will be allowed to bring cakes and pastries onto school
grounds ONLY on birthday occasions.
Please refrain from giving your child/children any cakes/tarts/pies and pastries to be shared with
classmates.
The well being of our students is our upmost priority and due to the presence of various
allergies in our community, students are not allowed to share food.

HEALTH & SAFETY
Security
The safety and security of your children is extremely important to us.
All parents and visitors must sign in at the office when entering the school
building and sign out when leaving.
We ask all parents to use the outer parking lot and enter through the small gate.
Please help us in ensuring that the small gate is closed at all times. The school has
an evacuation procedure which will be used in the case of either fire or other
security alert. Regular fire and earthquake drills take place throughout the school
year.
OUR SCHOOL IMPLEMENTS A STRICT NUT-FREE POLICY
No food containing any type of nuts or nut traces is allowed in the school building at
any time.
Please note: Nutella does contain nuts.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping everyone in our school healthy and safe.
Snacks/Drinks: Please note that students may bring healthy snacks or fruit to enjoy
during their breaks.
Sweets, crisps and high sugar drinks (Coke, Sprite, Ice-Tea) are not allowed.
No gum is permitted anywhere in the building or on the school grounds.
Early Years students bring only fruit.
Sun Cream/Sunscreen
The school does not provide sun cream/sunscreen for students. Please send it in
with your child if you want him/her to wear it during break times. Please ensure
that he/she knows how to apply it and that he/she understands that it is not to be
shared with other students.

Gentili Famiglie IS Modena,
Pranzo di Benvenuto 2014
Osservando la varietà di culture presenti nella nostra comunità, guardando le nostre
famiglie, lo staff e gli studenti riuniti per godersi insieme un ottimo e rilassato pranzo, e
desiderosi di provare a comunicare in una lingua diversa, con piacere che mi sono ritrovata a
pensare che siamo realmente una comunità di studenti per la vita e di persone con
mentalità internazionale. Uno speciale ringraziamento a Mrs. Salters e Mrs. Christensson per
avere, ancora una volta, superato ogni aspettativa organizzando un altro fantastico Pranzo
di benvenuto!
PYP Workshop per i genitori

Orchestra del Wesley College, Melbourne, Australia in visita a IS Modena
Un evento emozionante per i ns. studenti, in arrivo il 24 settembre, l’orchestra del Wesley
College di Melbourne. Una banda, l’Orchestra del Wesley College, composta da 13 studenti e
3 insegnanti che sta viaggiando dall’Australia, visiterà la nostra scuola, si esibirà in un
repertorio ampio e variato che spazia dal rock and roll alle colonne sonore fino alla musica
folk. L’ensemble è un mix di violini, percussioni, chitarra, basso e tastiere.
Il concerto per i ns. studenti sarà tenuto nell’Auditorium dalle 9:45.
Ringraziamo tutte le famiglie delle Middle Years che hanno accolto con entusiasmo questa
iniziativa e che ospiteranno gli studenti australiani.

Attività dopo scuola
Attendiamo ancora alcune conferme per le attività dopo scuola. Di seguito troverete
l’anteprima delle attività che prevediamo verranno confermate. Vi chiediamo di assicurarvi
di mandare la conferma per la partecipazione di vs. figlio/i alle attività entro oggi.
“Iniziare una nuova esperienza – workshop sulla relocation: attraversare il cambiamento
e le sfide che questo comporta” con la dr.ssa Fungi dalle 13:30 alle 14:45 nell’Auditorium.
Il workshop si terrà in lingua inglese . Vi preghiamo di confermare la vs. presenza entro

A seguito del fantastico feedback ricevuto dalle ns. Scuole “sorelle” di Milano e Monza,
quest’anno anche Modena offrirà questo importante workshop per tutte le ns. nuove
famiglie.

Campionato Mondiale di Volley Femminile – Italia 2014
Modena ospiterà alcune delle partite del campionato mondiale di volley ed insieme ad uno
dei ns. genitori, sig. Bertoli, asso della nazionale maschile italiana, stiamo organizzando
per andare ad assistere ad una o due partite mercoledì 1 ottobre.
Le partite si svolgeranno al PalaPanini a Modena alle 17 e alle 20. I biglietti di ingresso sono
da 20 Euro per il parterre e 14 Euro per le gradinate. I bambini sotto i 6 anni hanno un
ingresso ridotto. I biglietti sono validi per la giornata e permettono l’ingresso ad entrambe
le partite. Per cenare, fra una partite e l’altra, è possibile prenotare al Volley Village,
all’esterno del PalaPanini, costo cena all’incirca 20 euro.
Invieremo una mail dedicata ai ns. genitori completa di modulo di adesione in modo da
iniziare ad avere un idea del numero di studenti e genitori interessati a partecipare.
Il sig. Bertoli si è gentilmente offerto di organizzare l’acquisto dei biglietti e prenotare lo
spazio per la cena quando avremo definito il numero dei partecipanti.
Visto che il 1 ottobre non è poi così lontano vi chiederemo di dare un riscontro celere
appena riceverete informazioni dettagliate.

Lezioni di Italiano per principianti con Ms. Zini – lunedì dalle 13:45 alle 14:45
Offiremo le lezioni di Italiano per principianti per i ns. genitori. Se siete interessati e
volete scoprire di più vi invitiamo a partecipare alla lezione prova lunedì 6 ottobre dalle
13:45 alle 14:45. La partecipazione adnrà confemrata entro mercoledì 1 ottobre (minimo
4 partecipanti).
Siamo anche disponibili ad organizzare lezioni di Inglese (principianti e intermedi) con Mr.
Kay. Qualora siate interessati vogliate informare la ns. Segreteria. (minimo 4 partecipanti,
orario e giorno da concordare).

IMPORTANTI
Servizio bus
I giri delle navette sono definiti dalla ditta del trasporto bus che cerca di fornire il percorso più
efficiente possibile. Siate consapevoli che Vostro figlio può dover restare sul bus fino ad un’ora per
ogni viaggio.
Nel tentativo di migliorare la sicurezza e l’efficienza, sono state sviluppate alcune regole per l’uso
del bus:
 Gli studenti devono essere pronti per il bus un paio di minuti prima dell’orario di raccolta a loro
assegnato.
 Assicurarsi che le scarpe siano pulite.
 I genitori hanno la responsabilità di garantire che i figli prendano il pulmino al mattino.
 I Genitori devono informare la ditta del bus se il loro figlio non prenderà il bus.
 La scuola ha la responsabilità di assicurarsi che gli studenti salgano sul pulmino alla fine della
giornata scolastica. I pulmini possono partire dalla scuola in qualsiasi momento tra le 15:10 e le
15:20.
 La scuola richiede un messaggio o una mail da parte dei genitori entro le 14:00 se intendono
venire a prendere i bambini a scuola e se non richiedono il servizio. Salvo diversa
comunicazione, i bambini saranno messi sul pulmino.
 Agli studenti non è permesso cambiare pulmino per alcun motivo. In caso di emergenza, allora
deve essere contattata la School Manager e saranno apportate modifiche.
 Cambiamenti nell’orario del bus possono essere fatti per accogliere nuovi studenti. Speriamo
apprezziate lo sforzo della ditta del bus nel contenere i cambiamenti.
 Gli studenti devono restare seduti con le cinture allacciate per tutto il tempo che sono sul bus.
Gli studenti devono avere un comportamento educato sul bus.
 Se uno studente dovesse ripetutamente comportarsi male sul bus, la ditta del trasporto e la
scuola potrebbero concordare di sospendere il servizio bus per quel bambino per un paio di
giorni.
Celebrare il compleanno degli studenti a scuola
I festeggiamenti dei compleanni sono benaccetti nella nostra scuola, tuttavia ci sono alcune linee
guida da seguire:
a) Possiamo accettare a scuola solo torte o dolci “senza frutta a guscio” e devono essere
acquistati e non fatti in casa.
b) Dovrete informare la segreteria almeno 3 giorni prima della data in cui intendete portare la
torta a scuola. Una comunicazione scritta è preferibile.
c) Per evitare interruzioni nelle lezioni, agli studenti è permesso portare a scuola torte e dolci
SOLO in occasione di compleanni.
Vi invitiamo ad evitare di dare a vostro figlio torte/crostate/dolci da condividere con i compagni di
classe.
Il benessere dei nostri studenti è la nostra priorità assoluta e vista la presenza di varie allergie
nella nostra comunità, agli studenti non è permesso condividere cibo.

Salute & Sicurezza
Sicurezza
La sicurezza e l’incolumità dei nostri bambini è estremamente importante.
Tutti i genitori e i visitatori devono registrarsi in segreteria quando entrano a scuola e
devono segnare l’uscita quando escono. Chiediamo a tutti i genitori di usare il parcheggio
esterno e di entrare dal cancellino. Vi chiediamo di assicurarvi che il cancellino sia sempre
chiuso. La scuola ha una propria procedura di evacuazione in caso di incendio o di altro
allarme di sicurezza. Prove di evacuazione anti-incendio o anti-sismiche vengono condotte
regolarmente nel corso dell’anno scolastico.
NELLA NOSTRA SCUOLA E’ IN VIGORE UN RIGOROSO DIVIETO DI CONSUMO
DI FRUTTA A GUSCIO
Nessun alimento contenente frutta a guscio o tracce di frutta a guscio è ammesso
nell’edificio scolastico in qualsiasi momento.
NB: la Nutella contiene frutta a guscio.
Ringraziamo per la cooperazione nel mantenere un ambiente sano e sicuro per tutti.
Merende/bevande: si prega di notare che gli studenti possono portare merende sane o
frutta da gustare durante le ricreazioni.
Caramelle, patatine e bevande gassate (Cola, Sprite e The Freddo) non sono consentiti.
Non è permesso consumare gomme da masticare all’interno e all’esterno della scuola.
Gli studenti delle Materne portano solo frutta.
Protezione Solare/Schermo Solare
La scuola non fornisce crema solare/schermo solare agli studenti. Vi preghiamo di fornire la
crema solare a Vostro figlio se desiderate che la metta durante la ricreazione. Assicuratevi
che sappia come applicarla e che capisca che non può essere condivisa con gli altri
studenti.

School activity starts at 8:30!
We kindly remind you that school days start at 8:30 sharp. Which means the school activity will
begin exactly at 8:30 and any late comers will be disrupting class. Please try to make an effort and
come in before 8:30 am, children can be dropped off from 8:10 onwards.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
Students are expected to wear the school uniform which consists of a blue polo shirt and a blue
sweatshirt. Students can wear the short sleeved polo shirt and winter jacket on top for outdoor
activities. Please make sure your children refrain from wearing personal sweatshirts, cardigans or
jumpers. Please refer to the Student-Parent Handbook for further information.
DIVISA DELLA SCUOLA
Gli studenti devono indossare la divisa della scuola composta da una polo a manica lunga e/o corta
e felpa blue. Gli studenti possono indossare la polo a maniche corte sotto al giaccone per le
attività esterne. Vi preghiamo di assicurarvi che i vs. figli non vengano a scuola con felpe, cardigan

PARKING AREA
All parents must use the public parking area outside the school gate at all times.
Please remember to lock your cars and please make sure you don’t leave any personal belongings in
the car.
Internal parking area is reserved for staff only and the bus service.
PARCHEGGIO ESTERNO
Tutti i genitori devono utilizzare sempre il parcheggio all’esterno del cancello. Ricordatevi di
