JAPAN
Rowald Hepp, as well as their
counterparts from across the
spectrum of Japan’s wine trade
and media.
A total of 13 (0.8%) wines
received the coveted Trophy
award, 63 (5.2%) other wines
received Gold medals, 234
(18.1%) received Silver medals,
and 546 (41.7%) received
Bronze medals. In addition to
recognising absolute quality,
special Trophy Awards were
made for Best Value Wine, Best
Discovery Wine and Best Wine
from organically grown grapes.

The 18th Japan Wine Challenge
2015 was held in the Conrad
Tokyo from 28th to 30th July 2015.
A total of over 1,300 wines from
across the world were entered.
These were judged by a panel of
over 30 top wine professionals
from Japan and internationally.
These included Jim Harre, Lynne
Sherriff MW, David Wrigley MW,
John Salvi MW, Neal Martin, and
Ronald Brown, Founder of the
Japan Wine Challenge, said:
“The Japan Wine Challenge
was established 18 years ago in
recognitition of the importance
of wine and wine education in
Japan. Our goal is to identify
those wines which in the opinion
of our distinguished panel of
Japanese and international
judges constitute best quality and
value for the Japan consumer.
We work closely with the Japan
wine trade, educators and
media to this end, as well as
with Japan’s domestic wineries
to increase understanding of
Japan’s long established Koshu
wine production. Every year sees
a marked increase in the number
of absolutely first class offerings
presented for our competition,
reflecting the vibrancy and
continual search for quality/value
in this the most developed of the
Asia wine markets.”
The Japan Wine Challenge
Awards are detailed in our Japan
Wine Challenge website www.japanwinechallenge.
com. Producers/importers of our
Trophy winning wines will be
asked to feature these at a dinner
to be held on 29th January 2016
in conjunction with our related
charity NPO Wine into Water
which in the last few years has
built 257 wells in China and 100
wells in Cambodia for those
without access to drinking water.
CHALLENGE
Over the 18 years since its
inception, the Japan Wine
Challenge has established itself
as Japan’s largest and Asia’s most
prestigious wine competition.

親愛なる読者の皆様へ
第 18 回ジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジ 2015 は、2015 年 7 月 28 日
から 30 日の 3 日間にわたり、コンラッド東京ホテルにて開催されま
した。
世界中から 1,300 種類を超すワインのエントリーがあり、世界的に著
名なワイン専門家を含む 30 名を超える審査員により審査されました。
審査員には、海外からは、リン・シェリフ MW、デイヴィッド・リグリー
MW、ジョン・サルヴィ MW、、ニール・マーティン、ロワルド・ヘッ
プらが、対して日本からは、幅広く業界やメディアなどで活躍する専
門家達も参加しました。
15 本 ( 全体の 0.8%) がトロフィー賞に輝き、63 本 ( 全体の 5.2%) が金
賞に輝きました。234 本 ( 全体の 18.1%) が銀賞、そして 546 本 ( 全体
の 41.7%) が銅賞を受賞しました。
絶対的な品質を表彰するため特別に設けられたトロフィー賞が、ベス
ト・バリュー・ワイン、ベスト・ディスカバリー・ワイン、および有
機栽培のブドウから作られたベスト・オーガニック・ワインです。
ジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジの創立者ロナルド・ブラウンは、
「ジャ
パン・ワイン・チャレンジは日本国内におけるワイン教育およびワイ
ンの重要性を認識するために 18 年前に設立されました。私たちのゴー
ルは、国内外の著名な審査員達の意見をもとに、日本の消費者のため

るために、日本のワイン貿易やワイン教育者、またメディアへだけで

インが増加していることが見受けられます。

審査結果は、ジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジのウェブサイト www.
japanwinechallenge.com で発表されております。トロフィー賞を受
賞したワインの生産者 / 輸入業者へは、2016 年 1 月 29 日に開かれた
ガラ・ディナーにおいて、受賞ワインを提供して頂きました。
このことはジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジの関連 NPO（特定非営利
活動日本法人）のワイン・イントゥ・ウォーター（W2W）へのご協
力にもなり、W2W は過去数年間で中国四川省に 257 個、カンボジア
国内で飲料水が手に入らない地域に 140 個の井戸を建設しました。
皆様のお力添えを得て、創立から 18 年、ジャパン・ワイン・チャレ
ンジは日本で最大の、そしてアジアでは最も名高いワイン審査会とし
て確立できましたことに心より御礼申し上げます。

T
he Japan Wine Challenge
was held at the Conrad
Tokyo Hotel in July 2015 and
was once again attended by a
superb array of international
judges working together with
a diverse and knowledgeable
group of local Japanese
judges. The judging was as
smooth as clockwork and the
interaction between local and overseas judges was probably the
best I have ever witnessed at this competition. As always, my
fellow international judges and I continue to be tremendously
impressed by the extremely professional judging levels
shown by all the judges from Japan. This reflects the growing
importance and awareness of wine in this one of the leading
world wine markets.
The standard of the wines entered was high and it was good
to see some highly established wineries win through with their
quality. There was also a sizeable category of Koshu entered – a
cause very close to my heart.
One of our tasks during the course of the week was to present a
seminar for students, members of the trade and sommeliers on
the subject of international wine education. I presented on the
format required to pass the Master of Wine (MW) exam and
what is different and diverse about these two examinations.
In the past we had concentrated much more on blind tastings.
But, from 2010, we have showed most of the wines in an
open forum and at the end of the presentations showed a
pair of wines blind. This resulted in a lively participation in
the seminar by the students and solid interaction during the
course day.
We will be very pleased to repeat this in 2016.

を反映しています。
その週に行った予定の一つとして、我々は生徒や業界人、そしてソ
ムリエを対象とした国際的なワイン教育のセミナーを開催しました。
私は MW 試験合格に必要な形式で講義を行い、これら 2 つの試験の差
異についても言及しました。
過去のセミナーではブラインド・テイスティングをより重視してい
ましたが、今年度は殆どのワインで公開討論を行い、セミナーの最後
に 2 本だけブラインド・テイスティングしました。これにより生徒達
はセミナーにより積極的に参加し、その日のコースを通して活発なや
りとりが交わされました。
2016 年にまた再び開催できる事を楽しみにしています。

ャパン ･ ワイン ･ チャレンジが 2015 年７月、コンラッド東京ホ
達と、多様な知識を持ち合わせている日本人審査員を迎えました。
審査はとてもスムーズに進行し、日本と海外の審査員との間でこれ
までの審査会で目にした中でもおそらく最高の対話が行われていまし
た。出品されたワインのレベルは高く、定評あるワイナリーの品質が
評価され、受賞していたのは喜ばしかったです。また多くの甲州ワイ
ンが出品された事は個人的にとても大きな意味を持っています。
私を含める海外の審査員たちは、毎年日本人審査員によって示される
非常に専門的な審査レベルに深く感動しています。これは、主要な世
界ワイン市場の 1 つである日本におけるワインの重要性や注目の増加

me to learn more about wines through
greater discussions with international
judges. Also tasting significantly different
styles of wines makes me realize how
enormous the world of wines is. Especially
quality improvements of various Japanese
wines have been seen in this year. Such
phenomenon is very pleasant in encouraging simultaneousness for Japanese wine
judge.

て、私は深くワインを学ぶ事が出来ます。また、
リーダーがイギリスの方（ディヴィッド・リグ

It was first time to join the Japan Wine
Challenge as a jury. I enjoyed this opportunity and was good experience. The team
leader was a British MW, David Wrigley,
and his ability for the tasting and precise
description was highly impressive. And it
seems that there were certainly different
preferences by each jury members and I
noticed that I was more tolerant for natural
wines, so it was the chance to find myself
objectively and realize my preference.

I had opportunity to be a member of the
associate judge’s panel at the Japan Wine
Challenge 2015. It was a valuable experience
to critically assess wines with internationally
regarded judges and highly sought after
Japanese judges who support the wine
industry in Japan. The quality of wines
awarded was excellent and it was difficult to
say which wines were better. I hope that as
much information about such exciting wines
spreads out not only in Japan but also in the
world.

We have been exporting to Japan now for over
26years and this represents approximately 35%
of our total production.
The Japan Wine Challenge is very important for
our winery as our wines are compared against
many wines from around the world but also due
to our strong exporting relationship with Japan.
We are working hard to increase our range in
Japan so receiving awards for our wines we no
doubt help us in this endeavour to branch our
more.
We were very proud to receive awards for each
of the three wines entered into the Japan Wine
Challenge especially as we received a Gold for
our 2011 Reserve Shiraz and we would really like
to build on this in the future.

ジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジは、沢山の世界中
のワインを相手に比較試飲するだけでなく、日本

3 つのワインをエントリーした内、3 つともメダ
ルを受賞し特にリザーヴ・シラーズ 2011 は金賞

Established in 1867, Katnook has a unique heritage,
engrained in the development of Coonawarra’s wine region,
and Katnook Estate wines are classic Coonawarra. It is an
honour that our Katnook Estate Shiraz 2012 was awarded the
best Australian Wine in the 2015 Japan Wine Challenge , and
that Japan appreciates a style of Australian Shiraz with such
elegance and personality.
Senior winemaker Wayne Stehbens comments that, ‘’
Coonawarra Shiraz wines have a uniqueness that sets them
apart from the great ‘Australian Shiraz phenomenon’ which
put Australia on the world map. Shiraz from cooler sites can
be floral. Savoury. Supple. It’s these nuances which make
Katnook’s Shiraz exciting.”

Each winter frozen grapes are harvested when
they reach 40 Degrees Brix, by hand in the middle
of a winter night at temperatures of below -10°C.
Peller Estates Winemaker Katie Dickieson is
overjoyed with the recent plethora of awards at
the Japan Wine Challenge, commenting: “We are
delighted to have our wines so widely recognized
and although Canadian Icewine is highly
sought after in Japan it is the the intricate way
it is produced remains a mystery to many who

Excellent year for harvest in 2015, an increase of
hectoliters of wine products for a quality that
promises excellent.
The difference compared to the last years
have been a very rainy spring and a dry and
high temperatures, together with the lack of
rain during July, August and September, have
contributed significantly to accelerate the
ripening of the grapes to get healthy grapes. It is
always a pleasure for our company to enter our
wines at the Japan Wine Challenge!

González Byass is a family winery, founded in
1835, dedicated to making fine Sherries and
brandies in Jerez, Spain. Well-known brands
such as Tío Pepe Fino Sherry or Lepanto Brandy
de Jerez, or vinous jewels like Matusalem or
Apostoles have made González Byass one of
Spain’s most recognized wine brands worldwide. Father of Winemaker/Master Blender
Antonio Flores was the Production Director of the
company for over fifty years. Having graduated
from a university, Antonio returned to his native
Jerez to join the González Byass technical team
in 1980. He is a specialist in the oxidative and
non-oxidative ageing of Sherries with a particular
expertise in the development of the flor and it's
chemical reactions with the Sherry.

Coignetiae), native of Japan, since 1988.
It has been said that the quality of itself is lower
than those of grapes grown for fermentation,
however, we have kept believing the potential of
this grape and have learned by trials and errors
with the grape growers.

Gold medal at the Japan Wine Challenge which
is the leading wine concours in the world.

我々は ”Japanese White Wine” のシャルドネ品種において最大
級の生産者で、
『たとえ百年費やしても、世界で最高品質のワ
インと並ぶ』という “Century-Long Dream” と称すコミットメ
ントを掲げています。 今回の受賞は、ブドウ栽培家、ワイン
創りのスタッフ、また “TAKAHATA” の名をエチケットに託し
た山形県高畠町にとって、“Century-Long Dream” へ近づくう
えで、確実に大きな揺らぐことのない自信となるでしょう。
今後は日々進化する市場の中で、“TAKAHATA” の名を一層輝か
せることを願いつつ、高品質日本ワイン市場への貢献を継続で
きる、ジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジの更なる発展を祈念いた
します。
Although we had many rain in 2014, we are very happy
that our Campbell Early 2014 was awarded Gold, Silver for
Chardonnay Unfiltered 2014, and Bronze for Hyakuzi Extra
Sec NV.
In Tsuno-Cho, Miyazaki, grape growing has started right
after the end of WWII. Its warm weather enables us to pick
grapes in August, and thus it is recognized as the production
region for Campbell Early. 20 years ago we have started a
joint company, "Wines for Everyone" to make wine to add
value to the Campbell Early. This grape is Labrasca and
was originally planted to eat, and we are unknown winery
located in Miyazaki, which is far away from Japan's main
wine production region. Nontheless, we flatter ourselves
that it is epoch-making that our wine was awarded Gold and
we share this great news with local people.

は雨が多く、ビンテージ的には厳しい年だったので、喜びもひ
としおです。
都農町では戦後間もなくブドウ栽培が始まりました。宮崎の温
暖な気候を生かして８月にはブドウの出荷が可能であり、キャ
ンベル・アーリーの生産地として現在に至っております。その
キャンベル・アーリーに付加価値をつけてワインにする－そう
して弊社は平成８年に第３セクター「みんなのワイン」として
スタートし、今年で 20 年目を迎えました。
キャンベル・アーリーは生食用ブドウ、ラブラスカ種であり、
我社はワイン産地から遠く離れた宮崎の一地方の無名のワイ
ナリー、そのようなワインが金賞を受賞したことは、日本のワ
インの歴史としてもエポックメイキングな出来事と自負して
おります。地域の皆さんと共に受賞の喜びを分かち合っており
ます。

The Saint Clair Pioneer Block 11 Cell Block Chardonnay 2013
won two trophies at the Japan Wine Challenge: Trophy
for Best New World White Wine and Trophy for Best of
Show. We are incredibly proud to receive these two highly
acclaimed trophies.
This is a single vineyard wine sourced from a vineyard within
the lower Wairau Valley. The soil here has many available
minerals reflected in the ‘salty’ character on the palate. Full
bodied and flavoursome with fresh tropical fruit and a hint
of toast oak, the wine finishes with great intensity. Trophies
such as this combined with consistent show success across
a range of international wine shows has assisted Saint
Clair to becoming a leading New Zealand wine producer.
Award success is the result of dedication and upmost
professionalism of the entire Saint Clair team – a tribute to
the family owned Marlborough winery.

Since graduating with a Master of Science (Hons)
Fiona Turner has immersed herself in the wine
industry. Now, with over 20 years winemaking
experience in Marlborough – along with vintages
in Hawkes Bay, Central Otago and California –
Fiona focuses on fine aromatics, balance and
integration when making our Tinpot Hut wine.
We employ viticulture techniques to achieve
moderate yields and excellent varietal flavour.
Our winemaking philosophy is to make wines
that are a true expression of each and every
varietal, and reflect the unique sites of Tinpot Hut
vineyards.
We consider the Japan Wine Challenge to be
the most well known and respected wine
competition in Japan. We were delighted to
be awarded a Gold for our 2014 Tinpot Hut
Marlborough Pinot Noir.

Sirita Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 is 95% Cabernet
Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. Fermented in French
oak for 22 months. Unfiltered.
This Cabernet Sauvignon was made from ripe
and almost like classic European grapes. Palate
is firm tannin and acidity, and very complex. You
can obviously tell by looking at the fermentation,
acidity, tannin, and balance of the wine that the
grape was grown at an excellent vineyard. This
12-year-old wine can still be drunk to your heart.
It is indeed less flavour and reserved while
youong but it changes to wonderful classic style
which represents Napa Valley when matured.

私のカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンは昔ながらのヨー
ロッパにありそうな完熟したブドウを買い付けて
造りました。その味わいは、しっかりとしたタン
ニンと酸味があり、とても複雑味を帯びています。
この優良畑のブドウは、発酵具合や酸味、タンニン、
味のバランスを見れば明らかです。これらのワイ
ンは 10 年経った今日でも十分堪能していただけま
す。実際、若いうちは香りが弱く控えめな味わい
ですが、熟成してくるとナパヴァレーを代表とす
る素晴らしいクラシックスタイルに変わります。

Gala Dinner & Charity Auction
The Japan Wine Challenge Gala Dinner and Wine Into Water Charity
Auction were held on Friday 30th January 2015 in the ballroom of the
Conrad Tokyo Hotel. Over 100 guests including 18 Ambassadors and
many other VIP’s and wine lovers attended this fabulous evening, generally considered to be “The” wine event in the Tokyo social calendar.
Once again, each table had an individual wine selection prepared by the
Japan Wine Challenge Team, with a mixed collection of award-winning
wines from the 2014 Japan Wine Challenge. Coupled with a fantastic
menu from the Conrad chefs, this was a great degustation from which
the charity events could flow.
The Japan Wine Challenge was delighted and proud to announce that
the proceeds of the evening’s fund-raising activities would go to its associated charity Wine Into Water, a Japan-registered NPO which raise
money from wine lovers to provide daily drinking water to some of
the less fortunate 1 billion persons across the globe who do not have
it. There was a fund-raising opportunity during the evening – a raffle
featuring some outstanding prizes. The results of these activities raised
an impressive 840,000 yen. This was a remarkable achievement, and a
fantastic evening was had by all.

ジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジ ガラディナー＆チャリティオークションが 2015
年 1 月 30 日（金）にコンラッド東京ホテルにて開催されました。18 人の海外大使
やワイン愛好家の VIP を含む 100 名以上の方々にご参加いただき、素晴らしい夜
を楽しんでいただきました。
各テーブルにはジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジの 2014 年度受賞ワインが用意され、
これらのワインが見事なグランド・ハイアット東京にディナーと共に様々なワイ
ンを飲み比べできる素晴らしい機会となり、さらにチャリティを盛り上げました。
このディナーにて行われた募金活動での収益金が、ワインによって集まった資金
を、世界中で飲料水の手に入らない 1 億人もの人々のために水を供給する日本法
人の特定非営利活動法人ワイン・イントゥ・ウォーターに渡りその活動をさらに
拡大することが出来ることを、ここに喜んでお知らせ致します。
ディナーでは豪華な景品付きのラッフルチケットによる募金の機会がありました。
ご出席者の方々の、チャリティーに貢献できる機会となりました。総額 84 万円も
のご寄付が寄せられる結果となり、ご協力をいただいた皆様に深く感謝を申し上
げます。

Our First Mission
Japan Wine Challenge
For 18 years the Japan Wine Challenge has been
the largest and most prestigious wine competition
in Asia. Leading wine companies from across the
globe participate. Our international judges comprise the movers and shakers of the wine world,
many of them household names. Over the years we
have developed an equally impressive core of seasoned Japan-based judges. Our primary goal is the
development of wine education and understanding
in Japan, to the benefit of wine trade and consumer. We work closely with the leading international
wine educational bodies, specifically the Institute
of Masters of Wine, the Wine and Spirit Educational Trust and the San Francisco International Wine
Competition. Our sponsors include Grand Hyatt
Tokyo, Conrad Tokyo, Sheraton Miyako Hotel,
Riedel, Virgin Atlantic, Dometic, VOSS water. At
our January 2015 Gala Dinner and Charity Auction
we have raised Yen 840,000 for deserving Japanbased charitable causes. Our list of supporters is
too long to name individually. Reflecting our roots
in the beverage world, we decided that the time has
come to create our own NPO Wine into Water - the
latter's mission is to channel the funds raised annually at the Japan Wine Challenge Charity Auction
and related events in Asia into specific projects for
providing clean water to communities which did
not have it. In effect, those fortunate enough to
be able to appreciate and love fine wines can "give
back" and restore dignity to individuals, families
and communities who do not have access to the
most basic and important of all beverages - everyday drinking water. Accordingly, on 17th January
2011 we established a Japan-registered NPO, Wine
into Water.
Although it is envisaged that Wine into Water's
main focus will be in the developing countries,
almost immediately after the establishment of our
NPO came the Tohoku earthquake of 11th March
2011 with its appalling aftermath. For those countless persons without shelter and homes, the most
pressing requirement was drinking water, particularly in the area affected by the radiation where
it proved almost impossible to deliver. W2W was
instrumental in delivering approximately 700,000
bottles of water/beverage and several tons of food
and children supplies directly into the affected
Sendai, Ishinomaki and Onogawa areas - a small
but meaningful start to the implementation of our
mission. On the last day of judging the 2011 Japan
Wine Challenge in July 2011, the Japan Wine Challenge and Wine into Water arranged the delivery of
over 100 cases of wines to the victims of the earthquake - the objective this time bieng to bring not
just essential items but hope and joy into shattered
lives. We repeated this exercise on the last day of
judging of the Japan Wine Challenge in July 2015.
Our Vision
Our goal is to generate Yen 10 million every year to
provide water for communities who do not have it.
In 2012-2013, our objective was to provide shallow
wells in Cambodia - each well costs Yen 100,000
and can fulfil the everyday drinking requirements
of 5 families. At our Japan Wine Challenge Gala
Dinner and Charity Auctions, we raised money to
build 100 wells in 2012 and 2013. In this way, we
provided water through 100 wells for 500 families
or approximately 3,000 needy persons.
Our ambition is to allow every year deserving persons to enjoy a life style they can currently only
dimly imagine. Money raised in 2014 and 2015
wento to well-capping projects in the Philippines.
For 2016, we are planning to extend our programmes to provide water elsewhere in Asia. Our
latest fund-raising event was held on Friday 29th
January 2016 at Conrad Tokyo Hotel.

ジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジ
ジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジは 18 年目を迎え、アジアで
最大で、最も高名なワイン審査会です。世界中から一流のワ
イナリー・ワイン会社が参加し、ワイン界でも知る人ぞ知る
国際的な面々によって審査されます。この海外審査員と同じ
ように日本人審査員とも良い関係を築きあげてきました。私
達の第一の目標は、日本においてワインの教育と理解を深
め、ワイン貿易とワイン消費者へ利益をもたらすということ
です。私達は国際的にも一流の、インスティテュート・オブ・
マスターズ・オブ・ワイン、ワイン・アンド・スピリット・
エデュケーション・トラスト、そしてサンフランシスコ・イ
ンターナショナル・ワイン・コンペティションといったワイ
ン教育機構と共に審査会を開催しています。また、グランド・

私達はワインという飲料を扱っているということを踏まえ、
自身のＮＰＯ法人であるワイン・イントゥ・ウォーターを立
ち上げることになりました。この目的は、ジャパン・ワイン・
チャレンジのチャリティーオークションやそれに関連してア
ジアで行われるイベントにおいて毎年集められる資金を、清
潔な飲料水が手に入らない地域の人々に飲料水を届けるとい
うものです。
そして実際に、上質のワインに感謝し愛する人々は、日々の
飲料水という最も基本的で重要な飲料の手に入らない人々や
家族、そして地域にそれを贈り届けることができるのです。
したがって、2011 年 1 月 17 日、私達はワイン・イントゥ・
ウォーターという日本基盤のＮＰＯを設立しました。
ワイン・イントゥ・ウォーターは第一に発展途上国で活動す
ることを思い浮かべられていますが、このＮＰＯ法人を立ち
上げてほぼ直ぐ後に、2011 年 3 月 11 日の恐ろしい東北大
地震が起こりました。
特に放射能で汚染され、立ち入りがほぼ不可能な地域にいた
人々をはじめ、シェルターや家のない数えきれないほどの
人々の達が最も必要としていたのは飲料水でした。
ワイン・イントゥ・ウォーターは約 20 万本の水や数トンの
食糧、子供用品を仙台、石巻、小野川地域に直接届けました。
少しではありましたが、私達の使命を実行するにあたり意義
のあるスタートでした。
見通し
私達の目標は毎年 1,000 万円を集め水の無い地域へ水を供給
することです。2011 年、私達の目的は井戸をカンボジアに
建設することでした。井戸を 1 つ建設する費用は 10 万円で、
これが 5 つの家族のための毎日の飲料水となります。2012
年と 2013 年に開催されたジャパン・ワイン・チャレンジの
チャリティ・オークションでは、100 個もの井戸を建設でき
る資金が集まりました。こうすることで、私達は 100 個の
井戸を 500 家族、約 3,000 人もの人々に供給することが出
来ました。
私達が志していることは、このような貧困地帯に生活する
人々が現時点では全くもって想像できないほどのライフスタ
イルを楽しんでもらえるようになることです。
2014 年と 2015 年に集まった資金はフィリピンでの井戸建
設費用として利用されました。
2016 年には、アジア全域においてこのプログラムを拡大し
ていこうと計画しています。
2016 年 1 月 29 日金曜日にコンラッド東京ホテルにてワイ
ン・イントゥ・ウォーター　チャリティ・ファンドレイザー
が開催されました。

he Japan WINE Challenge awards for Best Wine are
given to the best wine of each country which has
already received a Silver Medal or higher and which in
the opinion of the judges merits such special recognition.
JWC Riedel Awards for Best Winemaker are given to
the winemakers whose wines have achieved the highest number of medals, and JWC Riedel Award for Best
Importer is given to the importer whose wines entered
have achieved the highest overall score.

Wine Medals to Promote Your Wines
T
here is a universal trend for the
customers to want to buy better wines for their dollar/yen/pound,
and they need independent help in
choosing them. What better than
featuring wines that have been evaluated by experts, and in a fashion that
removes favouritism, regional bias
and price point.
In many countries including Japan,
customers have become quite aware
of the different grape varieties and
regions where they come from. However, these consumers still do not
have the confidence to go out and
purchase a new label off the shelf.
A huge amount of high quality wine
is finding its way into Japan, and
increasingly retailers are able to offer
a very broad selection, from many
countries, and across ab array of
price points. This is certainly an improvement from 10 years ago where
the range was significantly narrower.
You find that a wine that gets awarded a gold medal from an important
wine competition will sell out its
stock much quicker than if it did not
win the accolade. In fact some wines
which would normally take 9 months
to sell through, can take as little as 3
weeks to completely sell out.
It's not just gold medals either. Many
c u s to m e r s g e t g re at val u e f ro m
purchasing silver and bronze medal
winning wines as these quite often
reflect better value drinking than the
technically excellent gold medal offerings.
As the Japanese wine market develops, we will all find that an independent arbiter of quality becomes a
very real motivator for the customer
purchase. It will encourage the wine
drinker to have diverse tasting experiences, discover new wine styles and
drink wine more often.

日本を含む各国では、消費者がぶどう
の品種や産地についても非常に詳しく
著しく短い期間で売り切れます。通常
