get back into the water, but waits for the sea to come to him. If it
does, well and good; if it does not, he simply dies.

The way people act is conditioned by the social custom and their

全訳：人々の振る舞い方は，社会的慣習と生きている時代によって条件
付けられている。感じ方や感じ方でさえも，いってみれば外皮の
ようなものに覆われているのである。簡単かつ明瞭な例をあげて
みよう。エリザベス 1 世時代の男たち(確かに彼らはまことにもっ
て屈強であった！)は，すぐに恥ずかしげもなく人前で泣いたのだ。
今日のエリザベス 2 世の時代に社会に出ようとしている若者世代
は，似たような感覚に回帰しつつある。つまり，感情は隠す物で
はないという感覚だ。しかし，我が世代，父と祖父の世代は幼少
のみぎりより男は人前でそんな真似はしないものだという考えに
条件付けされているので，15,6 歳になるまでには，人前ではない
時でさえ，そんなことはできなくなってしまった。妻や子供の死
ということであれば別だが。
