2 Notes Polyn Long Division team January 31, 2017 Do you remember?? Reminder: (3rd grade long division) Polynomial LONG Division If divided by a binomial or trinomial 2 Notes Polyn Long Division team January 31, 2017 Division of polynomials can be written a couple of different ways #1 (3x3 - 9x2 + 2x - 15) ÷ (x - 2) d en divi sor or id div #2 divid end r iso div To set up a problem for long division you do the following r iso div div i de nd Step 1: Set up the division symbol and make sure both the divisor (outside) and dividend (inside) are written in descending order. If any terms are missing, use a zero to fill in the missing term (this will help with the spacing). Step 2: Divide the term with the highest power inside the division symbol (dividend) by the term with the highest power outside the division symbol (divisor). Write this on top of the division symbol. Step 3: Multiply (or distribute) the answer obtained in the previous step by the polynomial in front of the division symbol (the divisor), and write it below its like term in the dividend (inside the symbol). Step 4: Subtract (remember to change ALL the signs) like terms and bring down the next term. Step 5: Repeat Steps 2, 3, and 4 until there are no more terms to bring down. Step 6: Write the final answer. The term remaining after the last subtract step is the remainder and must be written as a fraction in the final answer. 2 Notes Polyn Long Division team 1) January 31, 2017 (3x3 - 9x2 + 2x - 15) ÷ (x - 2) Step 1 Step 2 Distribute Step 3 Write answer below like terms Step 4 Subtract (change all signs) ) ( Step 5 Repeat Steps 2,3,4 until all terms are gone ) ( Subtract (change all signs) ( ) 2 Notes Polyn Long Division team January 31, 2017 Repeat Steps 2,3,4 ) ) ( ( Remainder Answer: 2) (x4 - 3x2 + 8x - 22) ÷ (x + 5) ) 2 Notes Polyn Long Division team January 31, 2017 3) 4) (2x4 + 3x3 + 5x - 1) ÷ (x2 + 2) 2 Notes Polyn Long Division team January 31, 2017
