Οι παρουσιάσεις του συνεδρίου μας έχουν ως κύριο θέμα την οπτική, την οπτομετρία, τους
φακούς επαφής, την οφθαλμολογία και την φροντίδα των ματιών.
Μετά την τροποποίηση της νομοθεσία που αφορά την συνεχιζόμενη επαγγελματική επιμόρφωση
το συνέδριο μας αποκτά ιδιαίτερη σημασία γιατί αναγνωρίζεται από το Συμβούλιο Οπτικών
Κύπρου για την ανανέωση της άδειας εξασκήσεως του επαγγέλματος μας.
Το φετινό μας συνέδριο πραγματοποιείται μέσα σε δύσκολες οικονομικές συνθήκες για την

12th educational congress of optometry and optics.
The congress is an opportunity to refresh and improve our knowledge. As professionals I am

HELMER CARL GERORG SCHWEIZER
Born in 1957 in Germany, married with 2 children. He is an Optometrist, Contact lens specialist, MBA, BBA Area Manager and Head Professional Services, CIBA VISION IDM (Int.
Distributor Markets), based in Embrach, Switzerland. Head of Professional & Marketing Services, Lenses, CIBA VISION Int. Head of Marketing & Sales, CIBA VISION Switzerland. Project
Director, Research & Development, CIBA VISION GLOBAL HQ, USA. Contact Lens Specialist
in various positions and companies. Optometry education in Munich, Germany. He presented many workshops, posters and continuous education events in various countries among
others Abu Dhabi, Australia, Canada, China, Cyprus, France, Greece, Singapore, Portugal
and USA.
MICHALIS MAIMARIS
Michalis has a lengthy and broad background in Strategic Planning, Management and
Marketing. His prime interest is in the use of information technology in Marketing (CRM,
Digital Marketing, Marketing Metrics – ROI). He is a holder of a Postgraduate Diploma in
Marketing, and an MBA from Henley Management College. Having fulfilled the requirements
of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (U.K) he became a Full Member and Chartered
Marketer. Recently he became a Certified Management Consultant, having passed the
exams of the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes. He has worked for
fifteen years in managerial positions in the Marketing Departments of companies in different
sectors, including FMCG, Retailing, International Business and Consulting. During the past
ten years he is a business Consultant and Trainer at Knowledge Training & Consulting, the
company he had founded. Michalis’ services are unique, offering his clients innovative
and applicable ideas for their work place. During the last eight years he has participated
in many seminars abroad with Michael Porter, Tom Peters, Stephen Covey, Gary Hamel,
Fred Reichheld, and 50 other worldwide known Professors, Authors and Business Thinkers,
acquiring in-depth knowledge in the fields of Leadership, Strategic Management, Customer
Relationship Management, Social Media Marketing, Sales (KAM), Customer Service and the
Future Company.
ADOLFOS KANNETIS
Adolfos presence in the Optical field started in 1961 when after studying and being trained
in Germany and the UK he joined the family Optical firm established by his Uncle Nicos

S. Nicolaides in 1926. Now as President of “Nicolaides Optical”company with his three
children Nicolas (Optometrist), Elizabeth (Optometrist) and Louise (Optician) manage the
Wholesale and the Optical Outlets of the company.
His involvement in various activities over the years are:
Past President of The Cyprus Optical Association,
Past President of the Cyprus Optical Council,
Founder Member of the British Contact Lens Association(BCLA),
Past Member of the ECOO Professional Services Committee,
Member and Past President (1999/2000) of the Rotary Club of Limassol,
Founder Member of the Cyprus and later the Limassol Aero Club, Founder Member of the
Cyprus Amateur Radio Society (5B4- CP),
Member of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Golf Federation.
He is in full Optometrical Practice and specializes in difficult contact lens cases. He has
lectured and practiced contact lens fitting in the King Hussein Military Hospital in Amman
Jordan during 1975 to 1977. He has presented various Optical subjects in Cyprus and
Greece as well as Lebanon and Jordan, United Kingdom and USA. His relaxation Hobbies
are Golf, Windsurfing, Aero sports, Billiards and Computer Graphics.
SALLY BATES
BSc(Hons) FBDO Cert Ed.
As a Dispensing Optician lecturing in the field of Optics since 1993, Sally is passionate and
enthusiastic about her profession. She endeavours to instil these qualities and professional
skills in her students by relating the optical topics to ‘real life’ experiences in practice and
dealing with patients.
After recognising the need to support trainee Dispensing Opticians and their employers, Sally
formed her own training company offering courses for all sectors of the optical profession.
She has been an ABDO practical examiner since 1987 and has had the pleasure and honour
of lecturing on behalf of the professional body and for an international lens company. Sally
has had numerous articles published in optical journals and a national newspaper.
At the ABDO College, Sally is responsible for teaching all elements of the professional
practical examinations, and theory in communication skills, to dispensing students including
those at Degree level.

SPEAKERS BIOGRAPHY
DR. GEORGE ASIMELLIS
Physicist – Researcher, head of the LaserVision.gr Research Department.
Dr. Asimellis graduated from the Physics Department, Athens University (Magna Cum Laude)
and has served as Assistant Professor at the Physics Department, Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki and as Adjunct Professor at the Electrical Engineering Department, George
Mason University, Virginia, USA.
Dr. Asimellis has specialized in Visual Optics (M.Sc., Ph.D., Tufts University & Post-Doctorate
Fellowship, Harvard University). His Ph.D. thesis dealt with optical signal processing. He
has worked in a number of research centers and companies on research and development
of optoelectronic devices in the US. He is credited with a large number of peer-reviewed
original research publications and has a large number of presentations in international
conferences and meetings. He is reviewer in peer-reviewed journals. He has authored six
books dealing with Optics and Visual Optics, all of which have been proposed in the syllabi
of five major Greek Universities.
His research interests include anterior segment imaging, methods for detection and prevention
of keratoconus, development of devices for ocular aberrations and ophthalmological lasers.
DR NATALIA VLASAK
She graduated as an ophthalmologist at the Government Medical University in Kemerovo,
Russia in 1998. She had worked as an ophthalmic surgeon (glaucoma, refractive surgeries)
in the Clinical eye hospital from 1998 utill 2001. She also had a one year clinical specialization
at Westfalische Wilhelms -University, Munster, Germany. From 2002 utill 2007 she worked
in the Optometry department of the Helmholz Main Scientific and Research Eye Disease
Institute in Moscow. Additionally, she was a professional Service Manager of Hoya Vision
Care Europe in Russia from 2006 up to 2011. The main content of her actual work is to
provide optical, optometric and ophthalmological knowledge through presentations,
trainings, workshops as a lecturer and trainer at Hoya Faculty Experience and Education
centre, Hoya Vision Care Europe in Budapest.
DR CHRISTOS CONSTANTINOU
He was born in 1954 in Milia, Famagusta. He graduated from the II Gymnasium of Famagusta
in 1972. After the Cyprus’ invasion in 1974, he went to Moscow where he began his medical
studies. In 1980, he graduated with an MD and he continued with his specialization in
Ophthalmology until 1984. Since his return to Cyprus, he has been practicing Ophthalmology

in Larnaca as a private Ophthalmologist. He is a member of the Cyprus Ophthalmological
Company, where he served as a secretary and from 2005 up to 2009 as a President.
Currently, he is the secretary of the Company.
DR MIRIAM CONWAY
Lecturer Division of Optometry and Visual Science School of Health Sciences, City University
London, UK. PhD in Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics, Department of Optometry, Aston
University, United Kingdom BSc (Hons) Orthoptics, Department of Orthoptics, Liverpool,
United Kingdom. Member of the Health Professions Council, member of the British and Irish
Orthoptic Society. Research Fellow, Department of Optometry, Aston University.
