2015 12 9 12 70 1 28 28 14 1994 1999 2002 2010 10 6 11 1998 7 100 14 41 43 200 PDN 2012 40 170 70 9 On December 9 of last year, Mutsuko Minegishi sensei, founder of Guam Aikikai, received an awarded from the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan for her distinguished services in promoting friendly relationships and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States. On January 28 of this year, Minegishi sensei received a certificate of commendation at the Consulate of Japan on Guam. This award is a pride for the Japanese community living on Guam, and it serves to encourage our activities. Thus, we announce it to the public and pay our sincere gratitude to her. Twenty-eight individuals and 14 groups and organizations received this award, and among them, Mr. Daigoro Watanabe (former Takamiyama) in Hawaii was also included. Consulate of Japan on Guam Brief history of Minegishi sensei: Mutsuko Minegishi sensei established Saipan Aikikai in November, 1994 and taught Aikido, but in October of 1999, she lost the dojo because of the super typhoon in 2002. In the following year, 2003, she moved her base to Guam and began her activities to promote Aikido. During these years, she received her 6th dan in 1998, and 7th dan in 2010 which is the highest rank among women. At present, she holds 14 classes per week for more than 100 students at her dojo in Barrigada. She also travels to Croatia, Greece, South Africa, Italy, Russia, Monaco, etc., and in 43 years, she visited more than 200 dojos in the world. She teaches not only the techniques and the spirit of Aikido but also Japanese disciplines and manners. On Guam, she holds demonstrations at the annual Japan Festival (Akimatsuri) and Arts & Crafts Fair sponsored by the Japan Club of Guam, as well as giving demonstrations and seminars for the projects on the “Stop Domestic Violence” sponsored by the Guam Government, and at various events at the university, police academy, etc. sponsored by the Guam Tourism Bureau and Guam Newspaper (PDN), etc. In September, 2012, she celebrated her 40th anniversary in Aikido at a hotel, and more than 170 from Guam and 70 from Japan, South Africa, Russia, Croatia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc., participated in the event. Ms. Bodario, Representative to the Federal Government, delivered her congratulatory message, and a certificate of commendation to acknowledge her achievement was presented with presented to her with cosigned by the Calvo Governor of Guam and a senator Wonpat. In the last few years, she has given lectures and demonstrations at local high schools organized by the Japanese Consulate of Guam in order to increase the interest in Japan among the locals, and she cooperates and dedicates for the enhancement of the friendly relationship between Japan and Guam.
