Soy sauce, salt, miso, sauce? In the late 1980s, women categorising men’s faces became
a popular phenomenon. Descriptors were created by naming a condiment (!) followed by
gao (face) and danshi (guy). The most famous of these are the shoyu gao danshi (soy
sauce faced guys) and soosu gao danshi (sauce faced guys). A “soy sauce face”
comprises what are considered as typically Japanese features - long narrow eyes and a
low nose bridge; while a “sauced faced man” will have what are considered more
western style features – bigger eyes and a high nose bridge. Sauce refers to the
condiment Worcestershire sauce, used in Japan for dipping foods of western origin cutlets and fried foods. Besides soy sauce and sauce, there are other categories, such as
miso face, ketchup face, and mayonnaise face.
Recently a new category, the shio gao danshi (salt-faced guy) has appeared and the term
is gaining popularity. A salt-faced guy will have eyes on the small side, pale skin, be well

suited to glasses or casual clothing and have burly hands and muscles. In other words,
they have a Japanese-like face, are thin and kind looking, but possess a masculine body.

しょうゆ、しお、みそ、ソース…。1980 年代後半、女性が男性の顔をカテゴリーに分けることが流行し
ました。調味料の名前と「顔」と「男子」（guy）を組み合わせて、言葉を作りました。「しょうゆ顔男
子」と「ソース顔男子」が有名です。目がほそくて、鼻がひくい日本的な顔を「しょうゆ顔」、目が大き
くて鼻が高い西洋的な顔を「ソース顔」と言いました。ソースはカツやフライなどの西洋料理をたべる時
に使う調味料です。ほかに、「みそ顔」「ケチャップ顔」「マヨネーズ顔」などがあります。
最近「塩顔男子」というカテゴリーもできて、人気が高くなっています。目はあまり大きくない、肌の色
が白い、メガネやカジュアルな服がにあう、手や筋肉がたくましい男性を「塩顔男子」というそうです。
つまり、日本的な顔で、細くてやさしい印象だけど、男らしい体の男性です。
