English Communication Academic Integrity Policy and Promise One of the main goals of this course is to learn to express your opinions, thoughts, and feelings in clear English. This will often be done through in-class discussion, but sometimes you will be asked to write. Exchanging advice with a friend about your writing or consulting reference materials are both excellent ways to improve your work. However, there is a fine line between “helping” and “cheating”. Read the examples below and be sure you understand the difference. Please do these things Comments 1. Checking expressions or combinations of words. Example: You want to express “楽しい人生を送る”, but “send a fun life” sounds strange. After checking the Internet, you learn that the natural expression in English is “lead a fun life”, so you use that expression in your writing. 2. Asking a friend to check your paper for mistakes or to see if all points are clear after you’ve finished writing. Examples: “I think giving real examples here would make it more interesting.” “I didn’t understand which is the cause and which is the effect here.” “You seem to have gone off the topic here...” Examples of cheating & plagiarism 1. Using a machine translation. These kinds of natural combinations of words are called collocations, and they’re different ! in each language. Learning collocations is one key to speaking natural English. The desire to improve your communication is extremely important. Giving advice as in this ! example is an excellent way to make each other’s writing more complete. （What you may NOT do!） (! Write using your own English, no matter how difficult it may seem.) 2. For homework sheets, copying another friend’s answers and using them as your own. In this case, BOTH people will be considered to have cheated. Remember, copying and then changing a few words is still cheating. 3. Copying from the Internet, books, or other people, without using quotations or citing your sources. (Using another person’s words or ideas as your own, even just one sentence or one paragraph. ! Ex. 1: I found sentences on Wikipedia and used them as my own. ! Ex. 2: I found sentences on the Japanese Wikipedia, translated them to English, and used them as my own. ! Ex. 3: When writing a plot summary of a novel, I found a well-written summary by chance on the Internet. Since it said the same things I wanted to say, I changed a few points and used it as my own. 4. On an exam: Using a crib sheet or looking at another student’s answer sheet. 5. Other. If you are caught cheating... st 1 Time: You will fail the course and receive no credit. The general education office and your department office will be notified of the situation. Name: ____________________________________ Date: _________________ Student Number: ____________ English Communication 不正行為についてのポリシーと誓約本授業の目的の一つは英語で自分の意見・考え・気持ちなどをはっきりと伝えることです。授業中に直接話して伝えることが多いのですが、書いて伝えることもしばしばです。それを書く際には、友人とアドバイスをし合うことや参考文献を積極的に利用することはとても良いことです。ただ、「助け合い」と「不正行為」の差は紙一重です。下記の「助け合い」・「上手な学習」と「不正行為」の違いにくれぐれも注意してくださいね。是非やって欲しい「助け合い」や「上手な学習」コメント 1. 表現や単語と単語の組み合わせを確認すること。例：単語と単語の自然な組み合わせはコ自分の作文で「楽しい人生を送る」と表現したいけど、send a fun life はどうも変だという気がする。それで、インターネットで調べた結果、自然な ! 英語では「lead a fun life」と表現されることわかったので、そのまま応 2. 自分で書き終わってから、友人に見せ、話の筋が通っているか、文法のミスがないか「うまく伝えよう」という気持ちはなどを確認してもらうこと。「ここは実例をあげた方がおもしろいと思うよ。」 ! 「この部分とこの部分はどういう因果関係か、よくわからなかった。」「ここはちょっと脱線しているのでは・・・」などなど「不正行為」と見なされる例 1. 機械翻訳の使用。て違う。一個一個を学ぶことが英語学習の重要点の一つ。用させてもらった。例：ロケーションと呼ばれ、言語によっ非常に大切。この例のようにアドバイスをし合うことで、より完成度の高いものが書けるだろう。（やってはいけないこと！）（いかに難しくても機械翻訳を使わず自分の英語で書いて下さい。） 2. 宿題のプリントなどの場合、他人のを借りて写し、自分のものとして提出すること。その際に写した方も写させた方も不正行為扱いとされます。なお、写した後、所々書き換えることも不正行為です。 3. 引用せず、インターネット、本、友人の作文などから書き写すこと。（つまり、他人が書いたものを自分が書いたものとして見せ掛けること。）例１：Wikipedia の英語版で調べたことを自分の文章として写した。例２：Wikipedia の日本語版で調べたことを英訳して写した。例３：ある小説の筋を書こうと思った時、きれいにまとまった例をたまたまインターネットで見かけた。自分が伝えたい内容とほぼ同じだったので、少々手を加えて自分の文書に取り入れた。 4. 試験の際に：カンニング・ペーパーを持ち込むことや他人の解答用紙を見て書き写すこと。 5. その他。不正行為が発覚した場合１回目：成績が「不可」となり、単位をもらえないことになります。所属学部の事務室と教養教育の第三係に報告します。以上の説明を読み理解した上で不正行為をしないことを誓います。氏名____________________________________________ 学生番号________________ 日付___________________
