Holy Family Catholic School Community
Council hosts golf tournament
For the first time Holy Family Catholic School Community Council will be hosting a
golf tournament at Silver Brooke Golf Club on Saturday, May 24. The tournament begins
at 11:00 a.m. and the cost is $125 per person. Fundraising efforts will be going towards
replacing our current gymnasium wall mats by purchasing and installing protective permanent wall mats on all gymnasium walls and to supporting students who are in need of assistance to participate in field trips and co-curriculars.

Borden Karate Team
Once again, The KARATE Dojo's 2014 "YUSHINKAI KARATE TEAM" represented its
community with an impressive performance bringing home more than 40 awards from the
current "2014 IMGKA Goju Karate Championships" and the "2014 Canadian Naha Te Goju
Karate Championships". The team consisting of children and adult athletes of various age and
levels competed with strong minds, strong bodies and strong spirits, displaying true budo
(warrior way) precision via their hard work and training in preparation for the events.
The athletes have much to be proud of. Many senior black belt officials praised the team
for their precision in their art, their ring etiquette and outstanding sportsmanship. One senior
black belt advisor noted "Karate is ALIVE and WELL and it's in Angus / Borden Ontario, The
Karate Dojo! " Sincerely kind words but words earned by the Team none the less.
The 2014 Yushinak Karate Team consisted of the following...
Anna and Steve Lynch, Ed Rose, Matt Casey, Julian Lynch, Abigail Deuville, Alex
Aristidon, Noah Miller, Emilie LaFond, Gabrielle LaFond, Hanna Hutchison, Michelle
Lynch, Brayden Lynch, Maya Moore, Noah Crockett, Olivia Gaffiero, Owen Blanchette,
Olivia Burleigh, Patti Armes, Zoe Armes, Ryan Armes, Rezso Zoller, Tristan Zoller, Karissa
Kane, Wilson Nippard. A somewhat small team, but a team that proved to be a force to be
reckoned with in regards to the many awards won.
Many thanks to the athletes, parents, coaches and our great community that continues to
support our sport, programs and dojo.
OPEN HOUSE - MAY 31
The KARATE Dojo will be hosting an open house May 31 in celebrating the chief instructor's 30th year of training and teaching the martial arts. The open house will be an opportunity to meet the membership, view our new dojo located at 211 Mill Street Unit 4 in Angus,
be witness to demonstrations of Karate, Kobudo (traditional weaponry of Okinawa), Yoga
and related training programs. The open house will be a great opportunity to inquire about the
programs, our sport and other programs offered as well as meeting the instructor staff.
Celebrations will also include the launch of our newly formed organization, The C.G.K.F.
(Canadian Goju-ryu

Calling all runners and cyclists!
Something new for Health and Fitness Day
Health and Fitness Day, an event run by PSP, returns
Friday, May 30!
To add something new to the day, this year’s event will
include an RCAF hosted run (both competitive and non) and
a 25km bike ride (non-competitive).
The RCAF Run will run from 8-9 a.m. with a choice
between 5km or 10km. Participants are asked to please meet
at the Andy Anderson Arena parking area. Competitive runners will need to register in advance by emailing their first
and last name, gender and race distance to “+ 16 Wing
RCAF Run Registration” on the DWAN. Numbered bibs
can be picked up on race day or prior to (watch for details
to come). Competitive male runners will need to be able to
complete the 5km in 24mins and the 10km in 50 mins, and
females will need to complete the 5km in 30 mins and the
10 km in 60 mins. There will be prizes awarded to the top
male and female in each category. Anyone wishing to run
non-competitively can arrive for an 8 a.m. start and do not
need to register. The route will be well marked, and water
stations will be available.
The 25km Bike Ride does not require registration, however, only the first 200 cyclists will be allowed to ride.
Please arrive at the Buell Gym front entrance for a 9:30 a.m.
start, with the ride ending at 11:30 a.m. Each cyclist will be
required to pass a safety inspection; please make sure your
bike is in good working condition prior to race day. No time
trial bikes or TT bars/extensions will be permitted. Cyclists
are asked to wear appropriate clothing (t-shirt required) and
must wear a helmet and closed toe shoes. Please remember
your water bottle; a water station will be available at about
the 15km mark. The route will go out the back gate, through
Everett and around to the Lisle gate, returning through the
Base via the Range Road.
Please make sure you have water and sun protection for
each event.

The last weekend of April was
busy for the 1st Borden Scout Group
who came out in force for their yearly tree plant at CFB Borden.
The Scouts, Beavers and Cubs
braved the damp weather to plant
seedlings in the empty area across
from the former Fredrick Campbell
School near the Base Residential
Housing Units. (RHU’s) While
planting, the Scouts also did some
garbage cleanup in the same areas.
In previous years, the Scouts have
planted in the ranges, and other locations around the Base. In fact, some
of the big pines near the back gate of
the Base were planted by the Scouts
back in the 40’s!
“It’s part of our environmental
expansion program. This is being
done right now in Barrie as well. We
do this right across Canada. It’s
about getting the earth back to something better than it is now. Hopefully
what they are going to get out of this
is to take care of the earth better than
we did,” commented Dick Riewe,
Group Comissioner for 1st Borden
Scouts.
Prior to the Tree Plant, the Scouts
were visited by Becky Mullin of
Base Natural Resources who gave
them a presentation about the importance of trees, local wildlife and
maintaining our resources.
“I feel pretty good about this. It’s
a good opportunity for families to
come out and plant trees with everyone,” commented Scout, William
Russell, age 11. “It’s important
because trees take in all the CO2 and
turn it into oxygen that we breathe,
and they keep the environment
clean.”

Au cours de la dernière
fin de semaine d’avril, les
membres du 1er Groupe de
scouts de Borden étaient
occupés à planter des arbres
dans le cadre de leur plantation annuelle dans la Base, ce
à quoi ils ont participé en
grand nombre.
Les scouts, les castors et
les louveteaux ont bravé le
temps humide pour planter
des semis sur le terrain vague
situé devant l’ancienne école
Frederick Campbell, près des
logements résidentiels de la
Base. Par la même occasion,
les scouts ont aussi ramassé
des déchets aux alentours.
Ces derniers plantent des
arbres sur les champs de tir
et dans d’autres endroits de
la Base depuis des années.
En fait, certains grands pins
se trouvant près de l’entrée
arrière ont été plantés par
des scouts dans les années
40!

Are you just posted into or live in CFB Borden and enjoy gardening? Why not grow your own vegetables on base? The Base Borden
Community Garden offers the opportunity for CAF personnel and
DND employees who are interested in gardening to get out and
enjoy the outdoors.
The garden is located near building P-144 on Dieppe Rd. There is a
plot fee of $20 to help with costs associated with the garden.

nous », affirme William
Russell, un scout de 11 ans. «

arbres absorbent tout le CO2
pour
ensuite
produire
l’oxygène que nous respirons
et garder l’environnement
propre. »

Jardin communautaire
de la BFC Borden
Vous venez d’être affecté à la BFC Borden ou vous y vivez, et vous aimez
jardiner? Pourquoi ne viendriez-vous pas faire pousser vos propres
légumes sur la base? Le personnel des FAC ainsi que les employés du
MDN intéressés ont en effet la chance de cultiver un jardin et de profiter
du plein air en louant une parcelle du Jardin communautaire de la BCF
Borden, qui se trouve près du bâtiment P-144, situé sur le chemin Dieppe.
La location d’une parcelle coûte 20 $, et l’argent aide à couvrir les frais
associés au jardin.

RCEME School Apprentice of the Month February 2014
The award for Apprentice of the
Month for February is awarded to
Corporal Raymond Jones.
During the month of February, a letter of appreciation from Canadian
Forces Recruiting Group Headquarters
(CFRG HQ) Commanding Officer,
Major Lavoie was received which stated that Corporal Jones was tasked to
CFRG HQ to perform 75 combination
lock changes in two of the CFRG HQ
buildings. He showed a high level of
professionalism during this task. His
knowledge and pleasant demeanour
were evident while interacting with all
rank levels and civilian members. He
confirmed that the all members were
well practiced with the new combination prior to moving on to the next
safe. His knowledge was gained during
his On-the-Job experience position at
Base Maintenance working in the
weapons shop, a task he has held since
October of last year. Corporal Jones
also assisted Apprentice Platoon staff
as an Assistant Range Safety Officer
during the C7 and pistol familiarity
ranges on 19 - 20 February. Corporal
Jones is an absolute asset to the platoon, Regimental Company and the
RCEME School as a whole, we are
proud of his excellent representation.
Well done Corporal Jones!

Au cours du mois de février, le
major Lavoie, commandant du quartier
général du Groupe du recrutement des
Forces canadiennes (QG GRFC), a
envoyé une lettre de remerciement dans
laquelle elle précise que le caporal
Jones avait été chargé d’effectuer 75
changements de combinaison de cadenas dans deux des bâtiments du QG
GRFC. Ce dernier a fait preuve d’un
niveau élevé de professionnalisme au
cours de cette tâche. Ses connaissances
et ses manières agréables étaient évidentes dans ses interactions avec les
militaires de tous les grades et les
employés civils. Il s’est assuré que le
militaire s’était exercé avec la nouvelle
combinaison avant de passer à la
prochaine. Il a acquis ses connaissances
pendant une expérience de travail aux
Services de maintenance de la base,
dans l’atelier des armes, une tâche qu’il
occupe depuis le mois d’octobre de l’an
dernier. Le caporal Jones a également
prêté main-forte au personnel du peloton d’apprentis, en tant qu’officier de
sécurité adjoint du champ de tir au
cours des activités de familiarisation
sur le C7 et le pistolet, qui ont eu lieu
les 19 et 20 février. Le caporal Jones est
un atout certain pour le peloton, la
Compagnie régimentaire et l’école du
GEMRC. Nous sommes fiers de son
excellente prestation.

by trade, might have thought it wasn’t
anything special, however, others disagreed. At a 16 Wing Honours and Awards ceremony LCol Marc Rodgers, the Commander 16
Wing, presented Sgt Durdin with the Life Saving
Award bestowed on him by The Most Venerable
Order of The Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem
Priory of Canada.
The certificate read:
Who on November 27, 2013, in Borden
Ontario, used his first aid skills to save a life.
While attending a luncheon at a local club,
Canadian Forces Sergeant Mark Durdin was chatting with others at his table. The man sitting next
to him suddenly appeared distressed. Sgt Durdin
asked if he was alright. The man shook his head,
indicating no. Sgt Durdin realized that the man
was choking. The casualty was having difficulty

breathing and unable to speak. Immediately, Sgt
Durdin administered several abdominal thrusts to
the casualty. The object was successfully dislodged and the casualty began to breathe again.
Sergeant Mark Durdin is to be commended for his
quick actions and for his knowledge and use of
first aid in saving a life.
Sgt Durdin, an Air Reservist who works at the
Air Command Academy at 16 Wing Borden, feels
somewhat embarrassed about receiving the award.
So much so, that when he heard about it he thought
that they were kidding, insisting that he simply did
what all RCAF members are taught to do. He recognized a problem, and then solved the problem.
He credits his training stating that he simply reacted to what we are all trained to do, “I noticed that
the individual was in distress, I helped him out,
once he was fine I dismissed it and moved on.”
Well done Sgt Durdin. I guess you can’t be too
surprised now if people who you don’t know, now
make it a point to sit at yours or a table close to
you!

simplement mis en pratique ce que l’on
apprend à tous les membres de l’ARC. Il a
cerné un problème et il l’a résolu. Il attribue
son mérite à son entraînement, car selon lui,
il a simplement réagi comme on nous forme
à le faire : « J’ai remarqué que l’homme
était en détresse, je l’ai aidé et une fois qu’il
allait bien, j’ai chassé ce moment de mon
esprit et je suis passé à autre chose. »
Félicitations Sgt Durdin! J’imagine que
vous ne devez pas être surpris maintenant si
des inconnus se font un devoir de prendre
place à votre table ou près de vous!

Focusing on Children and Youth

he Borden Family Resource
Centre (BFRC) offers a number of
services to community members,
among them are the Children and Youth
Program, which runs a variety of programs
for children and youth 0-18 years of age.
Parent-Child Services offers programming for children 0-6 years of age. For
these children, the BFRC runs Stay and
Play, to give parents/caregivers opportunities to come and interact with their child,
and to socialize children with their peers. “It
also helps the parents with socialization,
particularly when they are new to the Base;
it gives them the opportunity to connect
with other families, other children and
encourages further integration within the
community,” commented Nadine Hinkson,
Children and Youth Program Supervisor.
Stay and Play runs Tuesday, Wednesday
and Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are
different rooms to explore, occasional outings, bilingual story time and special activity days. Parents/caregivers must remain
with their child.
Kiddie Care is another service for the
0-6 age group, which offers casual/respite
childcare for parents who need to attend
appointments, run errands or just need a
moment to themselves. This service runs
Monday and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to
4 p.m. with registration up to two weeks in
advance by contacting the Children’s
Activity Facilitator.
Activity Theme Kits are available for
children ages 0-6 on loan for up to two
weeks. The kits use games, books, toys,
puzzles and puppets to stimulate interest on
up to 20 different topics that cover a variety
of science, math, music or literature based
themes. Family Book Bags contain a variety
of books, tips to enhance literacy with children, information about encouraging imagination and pretending and to spark interest in
reading. Bags are themed and available in both
French and English. Contact the Children’s
Activity Facilitator at ext. 2471 or 3994 for
more information.
Kids Club is a program offered to children in grades 1-4 and/or 6-9 years of age.
Kids Club runs on Saturdays from 1 – 4 p.m.
at the Youth Centre with crafts, indoor/outdoor activities and a healthy snack.
The Youth Centre is open on a drop-in
basis for children ages 10 to 18 years on
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings
from 6-9 p.m. The Centre offers a pool
table, video gaming systems, karaoke,
sports equipment, TV, sound system, air
hockey, canteen and computers with
Internet access. There are a variety of
planned activities offered each evening in
addition to special events, dances and outings. The Youth Centre also runs workshops
such as home alone and babysitting courses
to help youth develop new skills.
The Youth Centre’s program planning is
developed in conjunction with the Youth
Advisory Committee (YAC), which is
selected each autumn through an interview
process for interested youth. The Committee
meets monthly, discussing community
events and involvement, fundraising projects and other ways to enhance the youth
program, often bringing innovative ideas to
the table. “It’s about encouraging volunteerism and community engagement,” commented Hinkson. “Their ideas, opinions and
the topics that we discuss encourages YAC
members to take ownership and pride in
their contributions to the Youth Centre operations. It gives them an opportunity to offer
their input and speak to what they would

The Youth Centre offers a shuttle service
to and from home for registered members
and guests of the Youth Centre. Youth participants must call a minimum of one hour
prior to opening to have a staff member pick
them up from Borden ($1 for members, $2
for guests) and Angus ($2 members, $4
guests) as far as the 5th Line. Van passes are
available for frequent users of the service.

Program or “Triple P.” Triple P provides
education on topics chosen through the suggestion box, by request or through conversations with parents that reveal needs or interests. The BFRC is always open to workshop

e Centre de ressources à la famille de Borden (CRFB) offre différents services aux
membres de la communauté, notamment les Services pour enfants et adolescents,
dont les divers programmes s’adressent aux enfants et aux jeunes de 18 ans et
moins.
Les Services aux parents et aux enfants proposent des programmes pour les enfants de 6
ans et moins. Pour ces derniers, le Centre dirige le programme « Restez et jouez » afin de
donner l’occasion aux parents et aux pourvoyeurs de soins d’interagir avec leurs enfants et
de les initier à la socialisation. « Cela permet aussi aux parents de fréquenter d'autres personnes, surtout quand ils viennent d’arriver dans la Base. Ils ont la possibilité de rencontrer de nouvelles familles et d’autres enfants, ce qui favorise davantage l’intégration dans la
communauté », explique Nadine Hinkson, superviseure des Services pour enfants et adolescents.
Les activités du programme Restez et jouez se déroulent le mardi, le mercredi et le vendredi, de 9 h à 13 h. Les enfants ont différentes salles à explorer, font des sorties à l’occasion, écoutent des histoires bilingues et profitent d’activités spéciales. Les parents et les
pourvoyeurs de soins doivent demeurer auprès de leurs enfants pendant les activités.
La halte-garderie constitue un autre programme pour les enfants de 6 ans et moins. Il
offre des services de garde occasionnelle aux parents qui doivent se rendre à un rendezvous, faire des courses ou tout simplement prendre du temps pour eux-mêmes. Les parents
peuvent profiter de ce service le lundi et le jeudi, de 9 h à 16 h, en réservant leur place
jusqu’à deux semaines au préalable auprès de l’animatrice des activités à l’intention des
enfants.
Il est également possible d’emprunter des trousses d’activités thématiques destinées aux
enfants de 6 ans et moins, pendant une période maximale de deux semaines. Ces trousses
comprennent des jeux, des livres, des jouets, des casse-têtes et des marionnettes afin
d’éveiller les enfants à quelque 20 différents sujets dans les domaines de la science, des
mathématiques, de la musique et de la littérature. En plus de contenir des livres, les sacs
destinés aux familles comprennent aussi des trucs visant à améliorer l’alphabétisation chez
les enfants, de l’information sur la façon de stimuler l’imagination et de « faire semblant »,
ainsi que des moyens de susciter l’intérêt envers la lecture. Ces sacs thématiques sont offerts
dans les deux langues officielles. Pour en savoir davantage, il faut communiquer avec l’animatrice des activités à l’intention des enfants, au poste 2471 ou 3994.
Le Club des jeunes s’adresse aux élèves de la 1re à la 4e année (6 à 9 ans). Il tient ses
activités le samedi, de 13 h à 16 h, au Centre d’adolescents, où les jeunes s’adonnent au
bricolage, font des activités intérieures ou extérieures, et prennent une collation santé.
Le Centre d’adolescents accueille les jeunes de 10 à 18 ans en tout temps le mardi, le
jeudi et le vendredi, de 18 h à 21 h. Il est doté d’une cantine et propose les activités suivantes : table de billard, consoles de jeu vidéo, karaoké, équipement de sport, télévision,
chaîne audio, jeu de hockey sur coussin d’air et ordinateurs avec accès Internet. Différentes
activités sont prévues chaque soir, en plus des activités spéciales, des danses et des sorties.
Le Centre organise également des ateliers « Seul à la maison » et donne des cours de gardiennage, afin de permettre aux jeunes de développer de nouvelles aptitudes.
Le Centre d’adolescents planifie ses activités de concert avec le Comité consultatif des
jeunes (CCJ), dont les membres sont choisis chaque automne grâce à un processus d’entrevue à l’intention des jeunes intéressés. Les membres du Comité se réunissent tous les mois
pour parler des activités communautaires, décider de leur participation à ces dernières,
penser à des collectes de fonds, et trouver des moyens d’enrichir le programme. Ils mettent
d’ailleurs souvent des idées novatrices de l’avant. « Il s’agit d’encourager le bénévolat et la
participation à la collectivité », poursuit Mme Hinkson. « Lorsque nous traitons des différents sujets qui concernent le Centre d’adolescents, les membres du Comité ont l’occasion
de présenter leurs idées et leurs opinions, ce qui les encourage à prendre leurs responsabilités et à être fiers de la contribution qu’ils apportent à l’organisme. Ils ont la possibilité de
donner leur point de vue et de dire ce qu’ils aimeraient voir au Centre. Ils sont les porteparole des enfants qui ne sont pas en mesure de faire partie du Comité, mais qui peuvent
tout de même se faire entendre grâce à eux. » Le temps passé au sein du CCJ est pris en
compte dans le calcul des heures de bénévolat. En fait, tous les jeunes peuvent se porter
volontaires au Centre et ainsi accumuler des heures de bénévolat dans le cadre de leur programme scolaire. Pour en savoir davantage, il suffit de communiquer avec le Centre d’adolescents au poste 2569 ou 3994.
Le Centre d’adolescents offre un service de navettes aller-retour à ses membres inscrits
et à leurs invités. Les jeunes qui ont besoin de transport doivent appeler au moins une heure
avant l’ouverture, et un membre du personnel passera les prendre, au coût (aller simple) de
1 $ par membre et de 2 $ par invité dans la Base, ou de 2 $ par membre et de 4 $ par invité
dans Angus, jusqu’à la 5th Line. Des laissez-passer sont offerts aux jeunes qui ont souvent

Le CRFB organise divers ateliers à l’intention des parents, dont ceux du programme de
parentage positif ou « Triple P ». Ce dernier vise à leur donner de l’information sur des
sujets choisis au moyen d’une boîte à suggestions, à la suite d’une demande ou lors de conversions avec des parents qui font part de leurs besoins ou de leurs intérêts. N’hésitez pas à
transmettre vos suggestions, car le Centre est toujours ouvert aux nouvelles idées de sujet à
aborder lors des ateliers.
Le CRFB s’engage à soutenir les familles de la BFC Borden et s’efforce d’encourager
les occasions et les activités de développement personnel, afin d’appuyer la communauté.

d’un nettoyage des déchets le 28 avril. Le groupe n’a pas
ménagé ses efforts pour nettoyer les terrains de baseball et
de soccer, ainsi que l’espace autour du Centre, afin de garder
notre Base belle et propre. Bravo aux membres des PSP!
A Helping hand for Mother Nature

he last weekend of April was good for Mother
Nature as the Borden Rod and Gun Club got out to
give back with their spring initiatives.
Some members of the Club gathered across from the
Juno Beach Mess to plant 400 trees in the field there. Other
Club members were busy around Catawampus Pond, picking up garbage and debris that collected there over the winter months. As they came across older trees that were damaged over the winter, the ever eco-minded members stopped
to help them with a repair job. Club members brought along
their families, teaching the younger generations about environmental stewardship as they worked outside.
“Tree planting not only helps for conservation and reforestation, the kids who are the Sparks, Guides, Brownies,
Cubs and Scouts, this counts towards some of their badges,”
explained Rod and Gun Vice President, Yvonne Mollison.
“Even though it’s raining, its perfect weather to plant trees
as the ground is nice and soft.”
A short presentation about conservation at home was followed by the children being treated to a round of crafts,
games and earth inspired snacks after all the planting and
outdoor activities. Door prizes of flower bulbs and eco light
bulbs were given away to participants.
“My favorite activity was planting all the trees,” commented 6-year old Club member, Rachel Reid. “It makes me
feel comfortable and like I was at home all that time. I think
they are going to grow into big trees and save the earth.”
The Rod and Gun Club is also going to be installing a
couple of bat houses in locations around Catawampus pond.
Each bat house will be able to accommodate up to 250 bats,
which in turn will feast upon the mosquito population
around the pond. Already installed are nesting boxes for the
Eastern Bluebird, a species that went into decline in the 60’s
and is now starting to make a come back.
Club member, Ron Reid has been growing apple trees
from seed he found from wild apple trees and giving these
seedlings to community members who have room for an
apple tree. This year alone he has already started 230
seedlings! “I am trying to give back to nature. I am not sure
what kind of apple you are going to get, because they are
wild and were cross-pollinated, but they are good for
wildlife. Sustainable use, that’s what its all about,” commented Reid. If you are interested in obtaining seedlings,

Donner un coup de main à dame Nature
A
u cours de la dernière fin de semaine d’avril, les
membres du Club de chasse et pêche de la BFC
Borden ont rendu à dame Nature ce qu’elle leur a
donné, en mettant en œuvre leurs initiatives printanières.
Des membres du Club se sont réunis dans le champ en
face du Mess Juno Beach, dans le but d’y planter 400 arbres,
tandis que d’autres s’affairaient autour de l’étang
Catawampus pour ramasser des déchets et des débris s’étant
accumulés au cours de l’hiver. Faisant preuve d’un grand
respect pour l’environnement, ils ont entrepris de réparer les
dommages causés à de vieux arbres sur lesquels ils sont
tombés par hasard. Accompagnés de leur famille, les membres du Club en ont profité pour enseigner aux jeunes la
gérance de l’environnement tout au long de leurs activités à
l’extérieur.
« Planter des arbres ne contribue pas seulement à la conservation et au reboisement. Pour les enfants qui font partie
des Sparks, des Guides, des Brownies, des Louveteaux et
Exploratrices, et des Scouts, cela compte pour l’obtention
de certains de leurs écussons », explique la vice-présidente
du Club de chasse et pêche, Yvonne Mollison. « Il pleut en
ce moment, mais c’est le meilleur temps pour planter des
arbres, parce que le sol est mou et facile à travailler ».
Après avoir planté leurs arbres et participé aux activités
à l’extérieur, les participants ont assisté à une courte présentation au sujet de la conservation à la maison. Les enfants

« Mon activité préférée était de planter des arbres »,
affirme Rachel Reid, membre du Club âgée de 6 ans. « Je
me sentais bien et c’est comme si j’étais à la maison tout ce
temps là. Je pense qu’ils vont pousser très haut et qu’ils vont
sauver la planète! »
Le Club de chasse et pêche installera également quelques
dortoirs à chauve-souris autour de l’étang Catawampus.
Chacun d’entre eux pourra accommoder jusqu’à 250
chauves souris, qui se régaleront des moustiques vivant
autour de l’étang. Des nichoirs ont déjà été installés pour le
merle bleu de l’Est, une espèce qui a commencé à diminuer
dans les années 60, mais qui revient tranquillement en force.

he Borden Family Resource Centre is
pleased to organize a Wine Tour to the
Durham Region on Saturday, June 14.
The trip will include a buffet luncheon at Frankie
Tomatto’s, tours of the Willow Spring Winery and
Ocala Orchards Farm Winery and a visit to the
White Feather Country Store.
It is the perfect occasion to try different wines,
relax and meet people from the Borden community. Spaces are limited! You have until May 16 to

pring? NAOSH Week! After a long winter the
exciting month of May finally arrives, and with it a
multitude of attractions and events. Did you know
that NAOSH (North American Occupational Safety and
Health) Week was one of them? It has been celebrated in
Canada, the USA and Mexico since 1997, in the first full
week of the month (May 4-10 this year).
In Canada, NAOSH Week is led by the Canadian Society
of Safety Engineering (CSSE), in partnership with the
Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety
(CCOHS), Employment and Social Development Canada
(ESDC), as well as other organizations. The goal is to
emphasize the importance of preventing injury and illness in
the workplace, at home, and in the community. The intended target: government, industry, labour, health and safety
organizations, the general public – virtually everybody.
Each year a different theme is chosen, such as mining safety, transportation safety, youth workplace safety, etc.
Participating members have held fleet safety classes and
ergonomic awareness events, distributed worker safety
brochures, presented courses, or even ran a Personal
Protective Equipment fashion show! The goal was to highlight the benefits of investment in occupational health and
safety, the importance of H&S professionals, and new ideas
in the field. However, above all, the ultimate goal is to max-

imally reduce cases of injury and illness.
The official Canadian launch of 2014 NAOSH Week is
being held in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on Monday May 5,
2014. The theme this year is a strident call to action, summoning all of us to “Make Safety a Habit!” Of course, it is
health and safety as a way of life, not just at work. And not
just for the one week in May! Invest some effort, commit to
the cause, be consistent – and before you know it, safety
will become second nature. You will not be alone in this
either, as NAOSH Week is a community-based event.
Activities are coordinated mainly by volunteers organized
in local and regional committees, who share the vision for
safer workplaces and communities. Support and resources
come through partnerships with government, business,
CSSE, and a variety of local groups determined to make a
difference. You may see a NAOSH Week flag or banner in
your neighbourhood. There might be symposiums, open
houses and training sessions. Perhaps school assemblies and
fun activities for the children? Look out for posters and
media announcements advertising NAOSH Week and raising general safety awareness. There may even be T-shirts,
caps and mugs – all for the great cause. Participation and
involvement lead to improved attitudes towards safety and
an increased understanding of its importance, foster a safety-focused culture, and, last but not least, assists in
improved communication between everyone involved in the
process.
Heed the call. Make Safety a Habit! It will be one you
will never want to give up.

’est la Semaine nord-américaine de la sécurité et de la santé au travail! Le long
hiver est terminé, et voici enfin arriver le mois de mai et une multitude de divertissements et d’activités qui sauront nous stimuler. Saviez-vous que le printemps
annonce aussi la Semaine nord américaine de la sécurité et de la santé au travail (SNASST)?
En effet, le Canada, les États-Unis et le Mexique célèbrent la SNASST depuis 1997, la première pleine semaine de mai (du 4 au 10 cette année).
Au Canada, l’organisation de la SNASST revient à la Société canadienne de la santé et
de la sécurité au travail (SCSST) et à ses partenaires, le Centre canadien d’hygiène et de
sécurité au travail (CCHST), Emploi et Développement social Canada (EDSC) et d’autres
organismes. La SNASST a pour but d’attirer l’attention sur l’importance de la prévention
des blessures et des maladies liées au travail, à la maison et au sein de la collectivité.
L’intention est de sensibiliser les gouvernements, l’industrie, la main-d’œuvre, les organismes de santé et de sécurité ainsi que le grand public - bref tout le monde. Le thème change
chaque année; il a déjà évoqué la sécurité dans les mines, la sécurité dans les transports, la
sécurité des jeunes sur les lieux de travail, etc. Par le passé, des participants ont donné des
leçons sur la sécurité des parcs de véhicules, tenu des activités de sensibilisation à l’ergonomie, distribué des dépliants sur la sécurité des travailleurs, donné différents cours et
même présenté un défilé de mode mettant en vedette l’équipement de protection personnel!
Tous les moyens sont bons pour souligner les avantages à investir dans la santé et la sécurité au travail, faire connaître le rôle important que jouent les professionnels de la SST et
lancer de nouvelles idées en la matière. Plus que tout, par contre, le but ultime consiste à
réduire dans toute la mesure du possible les cas de blessure et de maladie.
Au Canada, le lancement officiel de la SNASST 2014 aura lieu à St. John’s, à Terre-
Neuve-et-Labrador, le lundi 5 mai 2014. Le thème de l’année est un retentissant appel à
passer à l’action et nous invite tous à « Faire de la sécurité une habitude ». Bien sûr, il est
question de se soucier de santé et de sécurité dans la vie de tous les jours, pas seulement au
travail. Il s’agit aussi de le faire au-delà d’une simple semaine au mois de mai. Mettez-y du
cœur, adhérez à la cause, persévérez, et en un rien de temps, ça vous viendra tout naturellement. De plus, vous ne serez pas seul à relever le défi, car les racines de la SNASST sont
bien ancrées dans les collectivités. Les activités sont en grande partie coordonnées par des
bénévoles regroupés en comités locaux et régionaux, qui aspirent tous à accroître la sécurité au travail et dans la collectivité. Le soutien et les ressources mis à leur disposition proviennent de partenariats avec le gouvernement, le monde des affaires, la SCSST et différents
groupes locaux déterminés à changer les choses. Peut-être apercevrez-vous un drapeau ou
une banderole de la SNASST dans votre quartier, ou l’annonce de symposiums, de journées
portes ouvertes ou de séances de formation. Peut-être y aura-t-il des rassemblements scolaires et des activités amusantes pour les enfants. Soyez à l’affût d’affiches et d’annonces
dans les médias qui font la promotion de la SNASST et sensibilisent à la sécurité en général.
Vous pourriez même avoir la chance de mettre la main sur un t shirt, une casquette, une
tasse…pour soutenir la cause. La participation et l’engagement contribuent à améliorer les
attitudes à l’égard de la sécurité et la compréhension de son importance, à favoriser l’émergence d’une culture axée sur la sécurité et à faciliter la communication entre tous les participants au processus.
