My instructor sent me up to practice aerobatics solo,” recalled Rawson. “I was afraid to practice below the clouds, there wasn’t much space. So I climbed through the clouds and stayed on top. I was having a ball up there playing around, then realized I should get back. So I went down through the clouds, looked around and I had no idea where I was. My instructor said if that ever happened, to turn the compass on east, fly east until you come to a big lake, fly up and down until you see the big white cottage, when you get there, turn onto another heading and fly back to Borden. Sure enough there is Borden.” In September 1940, Rawson graduated the course and got his Wings at a ceremony held on the Borden tarmac; despite the dangers of flying in the early craft. 3 members of the course had perished during the training, and later that year, his Instructor, Peter Campbell crashed into Lake Muskoka and died. Flying was not for everyone, as some course members washed out and were sent to other trades. The next course Rawson took at Borden was an Advanced Flying Training, done in a Northrup A17 aircraft. This included learning to dive bomb, and hitting targets with smoke bombs that blew up on impact. “The Northrup A17 had that big perforated flap so you could get up to 20,000 ft and stick it on its nose. They had targets set out - a small building,” Rawson recalls. “So I looked out over the side, and oh, there’s my building. I dived down, and had a good score, blew the building up. A couple of days later I was called into the Commanding Officer’s office. They had cameras in the plane, to take a picture and prove that you had hit the building. It was a farmer’s chicken house, I blew it all to hell and killed all his chickens,” explained Rawson with a laugh. “They just compensated him, anybody could make a mistake like that, particularly if it was hazy up at 20,000 ft.” Rawson went on to become an Instructor, and later worked with SAR in the North. With his 22 years of service, and his continuous service to the Air Cadets, Rawson has seen it all. He was awarded the Air Force Cross for Meritorious Flying during the Second World War, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, a Korean War decoration and was inducted into the 16 Wing Fellowship consisting of only 13 people for their contributions to Camp Borden. “The people are the same family people, but the jobs are, in some cases, more demanding,” Rawson reflects. “The aircraft have changed, and the maintenance has changed. The people doing the repairs and servicing the airplanes are more technical, they know more then in the old days; it was a gasoline engine and that was it. Now with the jet engines it’s a different ballgame altogether.” When asked what impacted him the most in his career, Rawson responded, “I think the type of people stand out the most. The type of guys, particularly the flying ones, you do something stupid and they would call you every dirty name in the book, but then they would put their life on the line the next day for you. It’s kind of a family situation; you stick up for each other. It’s a very difficult thing to explain.” « On l’a dédommagé. » Citoyen Borden Citizen | April 25 avril 2014 | 5 0% 48 PURCHASE FINANCING FOR UP TO MONTHS ON SELECT MODELS◊ + $1 500 AND GET UP TO UP TO , IN LOYALTY REBATES FOR QUALIFIED RETAIL CUSTOMERS♦ $5,000 IN NO-CHARGE EXTRA FEATURES ON SELECT MODELS° RVR LANCER $5,000 IN NO-CHARGE EXTRA FEATURES°: $2,500 IN NO-CHARGE EXTRA FEATURES°: / / / / / LEATHER-WRAPPED STEERING WHEEL / 5-SPOKE ALLOY WHEELS / EXHAUST FINISHER 18” ALLOY WHEELS LARGE REAR SPOILER & ROOF RAILS CHROME GRILLE SURROUND FRONT UNDERCOVER / REAR UNDERCOVER / CHROME EXHAUST FINISHER / AND MORE! 27,736 + HST ONLY $ ▲ / POWER SUNROOF / REAR SPOILER / FOG LAMPS 21,836 + HST ONLY $ Available on RVR SE AWC, Limited Edition and GT models§ ▲ Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: Excludes Lancer Evolution and Lancer Ralliart BI-WEEKLY PAYMENTS AVAILABLE OUTLANDER MIRAGE ES FWD LOADED WITH FEATURES: GET A LOT FOR A LITTLE! / BLUETOOTH® WITH VOICE COMMAND AND STREAMING AUDIO / HEATED FRONT SEATS ◊ / AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL / TRACTION CONTROL 175 0% 84 AT / 64 MPG, 4.4 L/100 KM HIGHWAY DRIVING† / 7-AIRBAG SAFETY SYSTEM / OPTIONAL ADVANCED CVT Mirage SE model shown‡ Outlander GT S-AWC model shown‡ $ ES FOR Available on Outlander GT§ MONTHS WITH ABSOLUTELY $0 DOWN PAYMENT 24,436 + HST ONLY $ ▲ Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ➧ ADDITIONAL DISCOUNT FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL AT BARRIE MITSUBISHI ➧ § AWC standard on RVR SE AWC, Limited Edition and GT/Lancer SE AWC and GT. Citoyen Borden Citizen | April 25 avril 2014 | 7 S BY | PAR: EMILY BROWN Managing Editor | Rédactrice en chef aturday, April 19 - Worthington Park at CFB Borden was a flurry of eager, excited kids with baskets-in-hand all searching for the elusive hidden eggs. An estimated 150 participants came out to take part in the first annual CFB Borden Easter Egg Hunt organized and hosted by both the Base Borden Community Council (BBCC), as well as the CFB Borden Rod and Gun Club. The President of the Rod and Gun Club, Maj Glen Miller, outgoing BBCC Mayor, MWO Donald Farr and the incoming BBCC Mayor, Capt Steven Willet unanimously agreed that joining forces and blending the event was a great way to service the Borden community and was a wonderful way to contribute to the Base. “I liked finding the eggs with my sister,” Colin Smyth, a young participant commented. “She was too young to do it alone so I helped her, then we got lots of chocolate for our eggs.” At the conclusion of the egg hunt kids lined up to exchange their found eggs for a prize consisting of chocolate eggs and a gift bag full of goodies to take home. Guests then enjoyed a free BBQ with hotdogs and hamburgers and lots of chocolate on the side. L The BBCC and the CFB Borden Rod and Gun Club would like to thank all those who were involved in making this such a special event – in particular volunteers, Cpl Tammy Fagan, Mr. Ron Reid and MCpl Sheldon Pancham, all of whom went above and beyond to make this event a success. “The Base Borden Community Council was honoured to partner with the Rod & Gun Club this year in order to grow the tradition of an Easter Egg Hunt for the members of the Club and the residents of the community,” commented MWO Farr on behalf of the BBCC. “We look forward to making this an annual event for years to come.” Samuel and Olivia show off their baskets with the eggs they found on the hunt. » Silver Screen Dreams 8 | April 25 avril 2014 | Citoyen Borden Citizen O BY | PAR LEIGHSAH MILLWARD Staff Writer | Rédactrice Attitrée Terra Theatre to host its Grand Opening event ver the last couple of months, the Terra Theatre’s doors have been closed as improvements have been going on. Tremblay, Commander Canadian Defence Academy presented Mr. Jason Barr, a member of CDA Detachment Borden, with a Military Personnel Command Commendation for Mr. Barr’s work with the Business Process Renewal Working Group. Photo: Cpl Michael Terry, CFSTG/GISFC Imagery/Imagerie The commendation, signed by Major-General D.B. Millar, states that, “as a member of a small team, Jason Barr developed cooperatively a cogent, coherent and workable campaign plan for the implementation of a Command-wide business process renewal initiative designed to guide major change within MILPERSCOM. This plan became the basis for the MILPERSCOM response to the Defence Renewal Team request for transformation initiatives to be undertaken in 2013, garnering high praise. Equipped with the campaign plan, MILPERSCOM has been able to influence directly and significantly the discussions concerning CAF initiatives pertaining to the Military HR function, ensuring coherence and continuity in present day activities with themes recurring over the past twenty years. By his in-depth knowledge of the Command, application of expertise and dedication to this task, Jason Barr has demonstrated the highest professional standards expected within MILPERSCOM.” MGen Tremblay in his remarks stated that he appreciates the significant contribution that Jason Barr has made to the CAF on behalf of CDA. The presentation was made in front of the staff of CDA, Jason’s wife, Jennifer Goodfellow and CWO Thibault, Comd CWO. Congratulations Mr. Barr! Competition events included drills both with and without arms, first aid, seamanship and semaphore signaling. Your fence should define the boundary of your property to avoid ownership disputes with neighbours. Finding the lot lines may not be that easy. Problems you could face are corners that were never marked, a missing marker or working from the wrong marker. You should consult an Ontario Land Surveyor to ensure that your fence follows your lot line. You should agree with your neighbours on who will be responsible for the cost of building and maintaining the fence. If you can not reach an agreement, call your lawyer. The matter can be arbitrated under the Line Fences Act. The Township of Essa, like most municipalities, has by-laws governing fences. Failure to comply with the by-law Uncover More Legal Grounds at: could result in work orders or fines. Call your local municipal office about this. Many subdivisions contain easements and restrictions prohibiting construction of a fence without the developers or municipal consent.
