●大きな森の小さな家　ローラ･インガウルス・ワイルダー作● 今度は日本語と英語で「大きな森の小さな家」を読んでみよう。まずは日本語を読んで内容を理解。次に英語を音読。今度は、英語のなかから、わからない単語をペンで書き出してみる。そして日本文の中から探してみよう。大事なことは、必ず音読してみること。声にださないと、言語は上達しないよ。５回は繰り返しやってみよう。とうさん、感動しちゃうよ。このお話。家族の絆を描いたお話。カリサリにベットで読んでやろうって努力しているんだけど、横になったとたん、眠たくなっちまってしまうんです。まあ、だから悪いけど、繰り返し、こちらの動画を流しています。よくない親なのはわかっていますが、仕方ありません。すんません。安月給でも、仕事はあって、それなりに疲れますから、読み聞かせは重労働なんです。ちなみにローラのお話は、これからもどんどん続いて、ローラやメアリーが大人になるまで描かれているよ。シリーズ全部おもしろいから、いつかカリサリにも読んでもらいたいと思います。みなさんも、ぜひ、自分で読んでください。図書館で借りてきたり、お小遣いをためて、本を買ってください。とうさんや、かあさんには頼らないでください。ローラもメアリーも、（メアリーなんて、途中で失明してしまうんです！）大変な時代に、両親を手伝って生きてきたのです。もう、サバイバル生活です。君たちもがんばって、生きてください。クマサンからのお願いでした。 Little House in the Big Woods by　Laura Ingalls Wilder １００年ほど昔、アメリカのウィスコンシン州というところに、ローラという５歳の少女が住んでいました。大きな森の小さな丸太小屋には、ローラのほかにもお父さん、お母さん、お姉さんのメアリー、そして赤ちゃんのキャリー、犬のジャックが住んでいました。小屋のまわりの大きな森には、大木が茂っていて、野生の動物がたくさん住んでいました。 Once upon a time, about 100 years ago from now, a little girl aged five lived in the Big Woods of Wisconsin, in a little house made of logs. Her name was Laura. She lived there with Pa, Ma, her older sister Mary, baby sister Carrie and their dog, Jack. Big trees and wild animals abounded the Big Woods. 冬が近づいてくると、お父さんとお母さんは大忙し。長い冬に向けて、準備をはじめなくてはいけません。厳しい自然の中では、何もかもが手作りです。森でお父さんが射とめたシカの肉は、お母さんがくん製肉に。湖で釣った白身魚は、たるで塩づけに。そして、ジャガイモやニンジン、カボチャなど、畑で育てた野菜は、地下室や屋根裏部屋に蓄えました。春から秋にかけて太らせたブタは、ソーセージやラードになり、小さな家は食料貯蔵庫に早変わり。 With the approach of winter, Pa and Ma got very busy. They had to make everything by themselves, preparing for the long winter in the wilderness. Pa hunted deer for the family and Ma smoke-dried them. He brought home some white-fleshed fish to be salted down to preserve. The vegetables they grew in the garden, such as potatoes, carrots and pumpkins, were stored in the basement or attic. They also butchered the pig they fattened up from spring to fall, to make sausages and lard. Their small house soon became a food storage. 寒い冬、吹き付ける雪の中でも、小さな丸太の家はとっても居心地よく、そして安全でした。暖炉には火がプチプチと燃えて、おそろしいオオカミやクマも、冬の間は家の中に入ってきません。この丸太小屋には、いつも楽しい話をしてくれたり、上手にバイオリンもひいてくれる、たくましいお父さんと、かわいい犬のジャックがいます。 When the winter came and snowstorm hit the house, the family was snug and safe. The fire in the fireplace kept wolves and bears away from home and Pa told his children fascinating stories and played fiddles, while Jack, the cute dog, made them laugh. 冬も深まり、クリスマスが近づくと、今度はその準備で大忙し。お母さんは、ありきたりの材料を工夫して、クッキーやケーキなど、素敵なごちそうを作ってくれました。そして、クリスマスにはソリでやって来るおじさん一家を迎えます。 By the time Christmas rolled around, the family again got busy. Ma prepared wonderful cookies, cakes and treats with what she had at home. On Christmas Eve, they welcomed their uncle and his family who visited on a sled. 雪の中で思いっきり遊んだ翌朝、ローラたちは暖炉のそばに置いたくつ下の中に、サンタクロースの贈り物を見つけて目を輝かせました。ローラがもらったのは、手作りのお人形。うれしくてうれしくて、彼女は声も出ませんでした。 Laura, her sisters and their cousins played together in the snow. On the next morning, the Christmas Day, they found presents in the socks they put near the fireplace. When Laura saw what she got -- a handmade doll --- she was so happy that she couldn’t say a word. 長い冬も終わりに近づく頃、大きな森は春を迎えます。春のビックイベントは、カエデの一種であるメープルの木からシロップを取る仕事。木に傷をつけるとシロップがとろとろとろ・・・。取れたシロップはパンケーキにかけたり、キャンディーにしたり。この日は親戚も集まり、夜になると、おじいちゃんの家でダンスをしました。よそいきの美しい服で踊っているお母さんは、それはそれはキレイでした。 The big event of the early spring was maple sugaring. They cut into the trunks of maple trees and collected the dripping sap. The syrup was great on pancakes and as maple candies. When the syrup was ready, they went to the Granpa’s at night. Laura was delighted to see her Ma all beautiful and dressed up for the dance. その春、メアリーとローラは初めて、お父さんに町へ買い物に連れていってもらいます。にぎやかな町。たくさんのお店。すばらしい一日でした。でも、夕暮れ時、馬車で森の中を家に向かっていたら、お父さんは低い声で歌います。「わが家にまさる幸せはなし」と。 When spring came along, Pa took Mary and Laura to the town for the first time. It was a wonderful day, shopping and looking at all kinds of shops in the bustling town. On the way home in the Big Woods, Pa sang softly on the buggy, “There’s no place like home…” (Home, Sweet Home) 夏になると、森では、金色のおいしいハチミツが見つかります。お父さんは、一日中畑で働き、刈り入れ時がくると、おじさんたちと協力して麦刈りをします。お母さんは、麦のわらで、家族みんなにとてもかわいい帽子を編んでくれました。 Come summer, they went into the woods to find sweet golden honey. Pa worked on the fields all day and when harvest time came, uncles helped Pa mow barley. Ma collected straws and made lovely straw hats for everyone in the family. やがて冷たい雨がふり出すと、また冬がくるサインです。そしてその頃、冬仕度が始まります。長く厳しい冬が訪れても、ローラの住む小さな丸太小屋では、暖炉の火が燃え、響き渡るお父さんのバイオリンの楽しい音色。家族そろって家の中で過ごす、幸せな冬が、森の丸太小屋に再び巡ってくるのでした。 Then came rainy season began, time to prepare for long, cold winter. Winter time came along again, and in the small log cabin Laura lived, the family spent happy days together by the fireplace, listening to Pa playing pleasant tunes with his fiddle.
