According to the French-language newspaper La Liberté, Seif al-Islam has tried appealing to US business leaders and Hollywood stars to intercede on his behalf, but Klaus Schwab, the founder of the WEF, which holds its annual meeting in Davos every January, has remained firm. The paper says Schwab has told the Libyans several times that none of their decision-makers will be invited to Davos until relations between Switzerland and Libya have improved. The two countries have been at odds since the brief detention in Geneva in July 2008 of Hannibal Gaddafi, another son of Moammar Gaddafi, on charges of mistreating two servants. The UK oil group said that it was still in the process of ensuring any safety lessons learnt from its Gulf of Mexico spill had been fully implemented. In July, the company was preparing to drill from the rig, owned by US company Noble, in the Gulf of Sirte. The programme in Libya is one of BP’s biggest-ever exploration commitments. BP told the Financial Times in July that it was ready to start drilling “within a few weeks” in spite of widespread concerns over its safety and environmental record in the wake of the accident at the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20. OPEC, which is scheduled to gather Dec. 11 in Quito, Ecuador, will probably agree to a quota rollover and will focus on discussing compliance during this meeting, Ghanem said today at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. The price of oil will increase to $100 “pretty soon,” and once that happens OPEC may alter its production strategy, he said. “We’ve had output unchanged now since December 2008 and I think if we breach $100 next year we could see some relaxation in the quota,” Ghanem said before boarding the plane that will take him to the Ecuadorian capital. The whistleblowing website has "proved that America is not what it has led allies and friends to believe it to be," he said. Kadhafi said WikiLeaks has revealed that even "US relations with its allies are hypocritical," through the hundreds of thousands of US diplomatic cables it has made available on the Internet. "The true face of US diplomacy has been revealed through the confidential documents," he said, quoted by JANA. The Libyan leader said the website's role was "very important in revealing the plots which are hatched behind the curtains against persons and peoples," but warned it could lose credibility if it started "to damage people's image." Last November, the last of Libya's stockpile of highly enriched uranium -- about 11.5 pounds housed in seven casks -- was being prepared for transport on board a specially outfitted Russian airplane. One day before the material was scheduled to leave the North African state, however, Libyan officials announced that the material -- enough to build a radiological "dirty bomb" -could not leave the country and the containers were left exposed with a small guard detail in a region where al-Qaeda operatives are still active. [Global Security Newswire] (関連記事) Monday, 6 December, 2010: CAIRO (AP) — As it dismantled its nuclear weapons program, Libya sparked a tense diplomatic standoff with the United States last year when it refused to hand over its last batch of highly enriched uranium to protest the slowness of improving ties with Washington, leaked U.S. diplomatic memos reveal. The monthlong standoff, which has not previously been made public, was resolved only after a call from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to Libya's foreign minister, apparently to underline Washington's commitment to warming relations. After the call, Libya allowed Russia to take away the uranium in December 2009. But for that month, U.S. officials issued frantic warnings that the 11.5 pounds (5.2 kilograms) of highly enriched uranium was vulnerable to start leaking or be stolen, since it was sitting at Libya's Tajoura nuclear facility with only a single armed guard.
